Q: Literature is closing

Shog9As mentioned in the recent blog post, I must reluctantly announce that we'll be shutting this site down on Friday, May 4th, 2012. While a fine topic, progress here has been slow for some time now, and it simply does not appear that literature (in the general sense) has a strong enough following o...

@DForck42: I'm in favor of migrating all of the questions you flagged, myself.

I guess we ought to just go to the relevant chat and link all of these questions?

anyone know how to get our data?
the blog post links to an article that, aside from being almost a year old, says it contains only "all public non-beta Stack Exchange Sites"
Since we're still beta, that's obviously the wrong link

Q: Literature is closing — what questions should we migrate here?

GillesOur sister site Literature Stack Exchange is shutting down on May 4th due to a lack of activity. There is some overlap between the two sites: written SF is on-topic on both. So there are questions on Literature that could be migrated here and remain on the Internet. What questions should we req...

@TML: I'm downloading the linked data right now to see if it contains our stuff. I'll let you know if I can find it in there.
@TML: the date on it is sort of wrong, as they haven't been listing each backup as it comes out. They put a new one up "quarterly", but the most recent is from December. Hopefully they'll have another from this month up there soon.
btw, I've cleared all the flags on the potential migrations to sci-fi since they've now been posted over on their meta. (Though if you spot any others you should definitely flag it.)

Q: How do I grab the data from Literature.SE before it shuts down?

TMLThe blog post linked me to some data dump from September 2011 that says it contains "all public data in ... all public non-beta Stack Exchange Sites", but as Literature.SE never exited beta, it's not clear to me how we are supposed to get this data for ourselves; where the low amount of traffic w...

@TML Yeah, sorry for the confusion (cc @ladenedge). The data will go up on Area 51 after the site shuts down (in the same format as the normal data dumps).
I'll edit the blog post to make this more clear.

Ah, great, thanks.

Thanks @Shog9
Man, I hate to see all of those get migrated to SF&F...
sigh

Well, it's better than having them disappear at least. (Though if you're thinking of hosting this stuff later on, that's awesome too.)

It'll depend on how much work it takes to get data out of their dump format, I've got it downloading at home to take a look at later tonight.
It's just that I haven't ever really found SF&F to be a very nice place to be - probably because everything I ever wanted to talk about was not part of their charter, but it's still left me pretty turned off to the entire site.

Oh, dang, that's too bad. (I haven't really spent any time there so I can't comment.)

TML
You can see it already starting in the first comment on that Meta question: "We don't have much analysis on this site, and it usually devolves into a bunch of 'me too!' answers."
Just want different things, which is cool - that's why I wanted Literature :)

9:46 PM
Yeah, that makes sense. I'm not sure what the problem is with analysis either - I guess they like the definitive yes/no stuff.

10:07 PM
Okay, I've posted all of our potential migrations to the appropriate chat channels. Hopefully some of them get picked up. :(

Q: Can we migrate all of the Fantasy and Sci-Fi questions to scifi?

KalamaneSince we're closing down for good, can we migrate all of the questions tagged fantasy and science-fiction to scifi.stackexchange.com? There aren't many, just 41 questions in total. We'll let them close the duplicates, I say, because they're the reason we're closing. ;)

Q: Why did Literature fail?

GillesIn the interest of not repeating the same mistakes if another book- or literature-related site is proposed: why did Literature Stack Exchange fail? What should we learn from this? How can we avoid repeating the same mistakes? I'm asking on Literature Meta where the people best placed to answer h...
