I've got a fever, and the only cure is more 18th century book trade ephemera. #newacq

350 books read this year now! :D
Grats!
My reading's taken a sharp downward turn the last month or so. Lots of last-minute design work for the bicentenary of the Birth of Bahá'u'lláh that got crammed into my already kinda full schedule.
user15026
@BESW ah, that doesn't leave a lot of time for reading

Q: Best Questions & Answers from 3rd Quarter of 2017

Rand al'ThorThis post is a continuation of the grand old tradition of gathering collections of particularly good Literature Q&A, so that we have some easily available links to show off to people. Now that Literature has a community-run Twitter account, one obvious use for this post will be to gather links f...

We've got to come up with a better one, at least because its counter is stuck at 15 days
@Mithrandir Font illegible
@Gallifreyan it's handwritten

I think we should make it clear that we accept questions about Japanese literature in general. And probably shouldn't mention manga itself.
hum
link straight to ?
"Interested in Japanese literature other than manga? Head to Literature!"
Etc
I wouldn't specfically exclude manga
user15026
Yeah, not sure why we'd specifically exclude manga
meh, someone write an author tag wiki? literature.stackexchange.com/edit-tag-wiki/1275
...heh, I just bumped 5 of my questions up to the front page for tags :p

We wouldn't exclude manga, we just wouldn't mention it in the ad that's to be placed on Anime & Manga SE.

Q: What's the significance of Draco's reading material?

BESWIn chapter 2 of Lust Over Pendle, we see a pile of books and magazines that Draco's been using to study for pretending to be a Muggle: Draco gestured at the window seat of the breakfast room. It was piled high with Muggle magazines; she spotted Living etc, Elle Dec, Tatler, Country Life, FHM ...

How should we tag this? (@BESW)

Q: Are there any text analytics programs that are particularly useful/user friendly when used for literary analysis?

S.BaileyAs a student I find being able to do stylistic analysis and macroanalysis to be useful, but it is arduous to have to individually count words in a large text. Looking for recommendations on programs others have found useful, even just for listing the occurrences of particular words in a passage.

@Bookworm @Mithrandir Why so quick to close?
This isn't a 'recommendation' question in the sense of our custom close reason: it's not asking for reading recommendations, rather it's a resource request, which there's no consensus to universally close.
OK, it might be primarily opinion-based anyway, but you could've given the community some time to decide that.
21:13
@Randal'Thor right - that's why I originally closed it with that reason, then reconsidered it and went for POB instead.
...and even if it's not POB it's Too Broad, looks like.
I considered it fairly clear cut, and there aren't a ton of active users who are VTCing now
So... if it needs to be closed, why not hammer it if I see it?
If people disagree with the closure I'm always willing to reconsider ;). I don't hammer it in cases where I don't think it's clear.
If there's any way that asking for something to count words isn't 1.) too broad 2.) primarily opinion based 3.) seems off topic to me as well I'd like to hear it.
@Mithrandir I think there are more than enough users active enough and with enough rep to VTC. But it's hard to tell when you hammer every closeworthy question before us non-mods have the chance to look at it :-)
@Randal'Thor I left that too broad Story-ID and it was still open after a couple days last I saw ;)
@Mithrandir Because if you hammer everything, the community will never have the chance to learn how to use close votes responsibly, which will come back to bite you if/when the site gets much bigger and mods can't keep track of everything.
It's a cause-and-effect thing.
@Mithrandir The "little people in a tree" one? I VTC'ed it (although a quick Google search after that showed me that The Minpins is not just one but apparently by far the best-known book satisfying the description, so I then posted an answer).
Yeah, that one.
@Randal'Thor that's a good point, although I think that almost all of our active users now are active enough on the rest of SE that I don't think it's a problem now. I'll keep that in mind, though.
This one was successfully closed diamondlessly.

Let's see what SR makes of that question.
...doesn't provide a budget or anything...

Q: What is required for a question to contain "enough information"?

FlykThis is the question edition of What is required for an answer to be high quality? One of the key problems that I see Software Recommendations having, is people asking extremely vague and simple questions that ultimately boil down to one of the two close reasons we see on the rest of the network...

I don't know SR's policies, but a quick glance at the help centre suggests that specifying a budget isn't always required.
And that meta post is TL;DR :-)
21:40
Budget is specified in the meta post I linked which is linked from that help center page ;)
@Bookworm I'm now curious if that's a genuine VTRO or just a knee jerk response to me hammering it.
@Mithrandir I VTROed because I think it's an unclear enough situation that it shouldn't have been modhammered. What I think should ideally happen to it (though I realise it's unlikely) is to be reopened and then decided on by the community. I might even VTRC it myself at that point.

Was looking at "Stay Awake"'s Last.fm tags - learned there's a genre called "sophisti-pop". #TIL
