Q: Where is the setting of "A Hawk in Silver" based on?

Rand al'ThorThe sci-fi/fantasy author Mary Gentle's first novel, A Hawk in Silver, is set in the small town of 'Surcombe' on the south coast of England. Although Surcombe is fictional, the description of it is so precise, so detailed, so consistent in tiny minor details that don't matter to the story itself,...

Q: Does Hotel California imply that people aren't capable of changing?

EJoshuaSI've heard a variety of interpretations of Hotel California by The Eagles: the "high life" in Los Angeles, a journey from innocence to experience, greed in the music industry, drug addiction. (Confusingly enough, the band seems to have confirmed several of these interpretations). Regardless of wh...

Ordered Persepolis. Finally have time to participate in a topic challenge, I think. Summer internship's been hectic, but I'm particularly excited for this one. It's been near the top of my list for a while.

@Randal'Thor don't they get a link to a list of reasons why it was deleted?
For instance, on my answer to the Puzzling topic challenge suggestions, I get a link to puzzling.meta.stackexchange.com/help/deleted-answers

Q: Identify Chesterton's story

SashaAn Internet-article (in Russian) refers to “the Chesterton's short story, in which its character, who demanded from the people to be constantly cheerful, could not stand his own requirements, ruined himself by drink and committed suicide” (translated quote). What work of Chesterton's (I suppose ...

@Mithrandir Oh, true, I'd forgotten that. Still, a link to a generic help centre page is less helpful than a "hey, welcome to literature; I'm afraid I've had to delete this answer because it doesn't actually answer the question; please read our [tour] to learn more about how this site works"-type comment from an actual human.
A wild Emrakul has appeared!
@Emrakul Yay! :-D
@Randal'Thor the Titan of Corruption ;)
Congrats
@Randal'Thor 1st!
I'm at 51, guess I should ask some questions :P

7 upvotes in a row on answers and questions. Nice.
That may get reversed due to the script
Um, yeah, nine votes all within a minute... looks like it'll be reversed.
...right
It said nine minutes ago, so I mixed myself up

@Gallifreyan 4 for me. Looks like somebody was going through the tag upvoting all the HtBaG questions.
Can't believe I'm the first person to downvote this totally unsourced answer. — Rand al'Thor 2 mins ago
@BESW says the biggest HP fan on the site. (if we're going by involvement in the HP community).
@Randal'Thor :)
@Hamlet Fair cop.
@Hamlet Well, it just got one more vote each way :-/
The top answer isn't that great either, even disregarding the lack of source for the quote (which will probably soon be fixed).
"It's generally held [link to Cliffsnotes]"
Still, all these issues are with old answers.
Hi EJoshuaS, I've noticed that you've asked some excellent questions that have been deleted because they got one or two downvotes. I wish you would undelete them so I could upvote them. And like I mentioned, I do find it disappointing that your questions have been downvoted without even an explanatory comment. In my opinion they're good; you can tell that they are good because the ones you haven't deleted have sparked some interesting conversations :) — Hamlet ♦ 8 mins ago
It's actually quite impressive how fast Lit has improved its answer quality (thanks in no small part to @Hamlet's efforts).
23:56
Not really sure if I understand the downvotes on those questions.
It took SFF years to stop upvoting unexplained answers and start expecting sources and backup.
@Randal'Thor scifi stopped upvoting unexplained answers?
@Hamlet At a guess, because someone dislikes questions on principle.
@Randal'Thor but it's more than one person.
someone(s) then
@Hamlet Sometimes it even goes too far the other way: thinking answers can only be good if they're based directly on canon (quotes from books/scripts or interviews with authors/directors/etc.), rather than on some good solid reasoning.
23:59
@Randal'Thor that has nothing to do with back it up; that's about how SciFi approaches SciFi.
