To type Gödel (with an attractive umlaut), try typing it somewhere using HTML, then copy and paste it into the editor here. Or, you could copy and paste it from this comment. Trying to hack it in LaTeX produces an unpleasant result. — Todd Trimble ♦ 4 mins ago
To add to @ToddTrimble's comment, both Godel and Gödel should return the same set of results, so from this view point they are equivalent. But using G$\ddot o$del G$\ddot o$del in your question would mean that it is not found when searching for this keyword. — Martin Sleziak 2 mins ago
Interestingly enough, I get 820 results for Godel and 821 results for Gödel.
Based on the following answer by arjafi I believe they should return the same results (maybe with different ordering, but the same posts):

A: Searching for accented characters is too strict

arjafiDue to internationalisation efforts, this issue is largely — but not completely — resolved. From the list in the other answer, it appears that most that were accented/unaccented pairs return the same results. For example, "Erdős", "Erdös", and "Erdos" each give the same results. There are some ...

@ToddTrimble: Thanks. I will try that. I'm surprised that LaTex has no umlaut-producing command. Why? — Thomas Benjamin 4 mins ago

Q: How to type special characters in this forum?

ZhanxiongThe general rule used in LaTeX doesn't work: for example, typing M\"{o}bius and Cram\'{e}r doesn't give the desired outputs.

@ThomasBenjamin My impression is that discussing differences between MathJax and LaTeX and also ways to typeset umlauts is not exactly related to the question, so to avoid adding too many unrelated comments, perhaps this line of discussion could continue in chat or you could post a question on meta about this. — Martin Sleziak 21 secs ago
I tried to search a bit whether this was discussed on MO before. I only found this question so far:

Q: LaTeX style accents in regular text

François G. DoraisLaTeX has some handy macros that allow the insertion of diacritics and other special characters in text mode. Relevant tables from the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List: These are handy since they don't require special input methods nor remembering unicode character numbers but, more important...

@FrançoisG.Dorais In connection with your question linked above, it seems that there is a Greasemonkey script mentioned in this answer: How to type special characters in this forum? (I do not use Greasemonkey myself, so I cannot test whether the userscript still works.)
BTW some of the advice given in the posts linked here might be perhaps useful, too:
And since I am posting lost of links perhaps two more from superuser will not do any harm. (I am sure many more entries like that can be found on various SE sites.) Insert Unicode characters via the keyboard? and How do I type accented characters in windows?Martin Sleziak Dec 29 '16 at 14:35
I will mention that on Mathematics Meta we have tag . Perhaps not the most suitable name, but this is the tag which is used for questions like this. (For example, questions related to accented characters.) Would creation of some similar tag make sense also here?
@ThomasBenjamin To answer your question: "I'm surprised that LaTex has no umlaut-producing command. Why?"
I think that short answer is that MathJax (used on this site) and LaTeX are not the same thing. MathJax is intended to be used for mathematics, so it is not surprising that mostly the commands intended for math mode in LaTeX are implemented.
You can find list of all supported commands on MathJax website.
And probably some of the posts I linked above can also partially answer your question.
