Why do equations need big names? I find it a bit cringe that the quantum evolution equations all have different names when in the end they're all just "the Hamiltonian generates time translation" with a different hat on :P

I mean I'm not gonna complain about probably useless trends, I'm on the quantum computing division :p

@TobiasFünke good time, then

I invest considerable time and patience in trying to get us all on the same page and explain to you where the problem lies and what I get in response is you trying to score points by invoking a bullshit generator? I'm not wasting my time on something like this again.

@imbAF Non-sensical question: The uniqueness of the solutions to the equations of motion does not depend on the number of initial conditions. What is the word "accurately" doing there? There are horrible equations even in one variable where in practice you can't compute anything "accurately".

I'm not debating an LLM. You can dig yourself out of being misunderstood the next time you fail to express yourself in a comprehensible manner.

i want to know the properties of a metal, not the individual behavior of every little constituent making up the metal

@RyderRude no, it's ridiculous and you don't get to dictate how other people speak around here

Q: About the raised negative sign in some basic textbooks

cormullionIn a math document recently (a UK A level test paper from the EdExcel board), I noticed that the negative/minus sign was raised and aligned to the top of the number. I'm interested to know whether this is a local or regional habit, how common or widespread it is, and whether it's considered a goo...

@SillyGoose so I'm co-silly goose and you're CoCuriousMind?
Feb 1 15:47
That doesn't sound suspicious at all
4
Feb 13 13:27
@RyderRude might be true, but on the other hand why would you take these claims serious? I don't think it is worth to discuss every random opinion from random people ^^

@SignorFeynman von Neumann just gets suspended every year like clockwork for posting unhinged screeds about bombing the Soviets after the previous suspension runs out :P
2
Feb 5 17:37
Why? Why would you have any personal preference for whether electrons are atomic or not at all?
2
Feb 11 15:58
@naturallyInconsistent are you being purposefully cryptic today? :P in what sense are the spherical harmonics the result of "dividing by a vector"?
Feb 5 13:31
This chat is so unhinged, I love that :P

Feb 4 09:50
@naturallyInconsistent while there is a certain overlap in personnel, it's not really New Atheism that turned into rationalism/EA (arguably the phenomenon is more that both funnel(ed) significantly into neoreaction or alt-right) . If you want to spend probably more time than necessary on the history, see e. g. aiascendant.substack.com/p/extropias-children - the transhumanist/longtermist agenda is older and more obscure than NA

It seems they do not want to privilege one basis. So, what they say is that a coordinate system is specified by ``a choice of basis for the linear functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$''.

I can't speak for the other chat members but I find amateur philosophy tiresome and I don't consider it appropriate for this room.

What book should I read to understand group theory, representation and whatever else went down in this conversation. I would very gladly read that book
Feb 9 11:34
i think it is misunderstanding that comes from text communication
Feb 8 22:48
So, also in real life, I "lag" during conversations and say later what had to be said before. Now it is the time. Today we finally got the ultimate version of Tobias. A swearing Tobias

@RyderRude You can believe that but that doesn't mean you need to type all of that thinking into the text box of the chat, and you especially don't need to present your thoughts as if they are facts. It is exhausting for other people in the chat to either let your musings stand uncorrected or to engage in these circular discussions. I'm asking you one last time to consider that this chat isn't your personal journal, it's a space to engage with other people.
