Having a project or a dream for a book is not bad, but I find it fruitful to be able to complete small things and get a feeling of achievement. It's also good for the learning process to fully complete something, let go of it, and go do something else better.

You should be able to say "you were" without mentally listing eram, eras, erat, eramus, eratis.
Jul 11, 2018 14:16
@luchonacho Yeah, the LaTeX discussion is getting off-topic in the family tree question. :)

Hi everyone, some shameless promotion: for those interested in the (ancient and modern) Semitic languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, etc.), the Area 51 proposal for Semitic Languages may be of interest.

@Cerberus The Latin versions of the texts underline the need for continuing Latin educational activities...

I caught a favorable breeze on the vast seas of sleep and sleeplessness, but then that breeze dissipated rather quickly, and now I am once again adrift.

Have you guys heard of the Open Greek and Latin Project‌?

I think we should finally implement a reason to close for insufficient effort (including blatant homework questions). There is a meta discussion for this thing and a recent example of a question that would benefit from a more appropriate reason to close. What do you folks think?

Came naturally, I do apologize.

@JoonasIlmavirta Reminds me of the old saying "Latinists never decline sex."

@ktm5124 If only anyone sung that in Latin with a similar orchestra...
Jul 4, 2017 20:27
Rule of thumb: If no one has given an answer explaining what you want to explain, answering is a good idea, even if it doesn't constitute a full answer.

@Rafael Understandable!
May 11, 2017 02:36
Should have stayed Latin!

There seems to be some amount of confrontation in the question about the gender of homo. I hope we can maintain a mature and positive tone here. Unnecessary negativity and especially ad hominem (whether masculine or feminine) argumentation are worth flagging, especially if anyone feels offended.

Concerns like this can be asked at meta. SE staff can give answers there for everyone to see, and they know their rules.

I actually find it somewhat ironic that they seem to require high quality language from new users but that is not what I would say about some of their comments. Oh well.
Oct 23, 2016 21:59
There are two new answers to the Greek meta question.

On this blog, a classicist at Oxford refers to Latin as the "maths of the humanities".

Hey, guys (and gals? do we have any gals?)—I uploaded that dictionary I was talking about to my website. It's at joelderfner.com/Humanist_Dictionary.html .

How about if we all behaved like the gentlemen we are, if deep inside?
Mar 16, 2016 01:46
@QPaysTaxes It's pretty terrible when you're trying to text in Latin.
Mar 16, 2016 01:12

My favorite is "Let's eat Grandma"
Mar 15, 2016 20:23
My favorite little aside has always been "velim nolim", i.e. "willy nilly"

Thank, you Google Books.

(I spent a summer in Berlin some years ago studying German, and because of all the Bach and Schubert I'd sung I was able to fake my way through the placement test and get put in an intermediate level. But then for the first two weeks I could only say things in this very, very archaic language: "Kind sir, hast thou a pencil?"

Google Archimedes Lewis Short. That version loads faster than the one at Perseus, although the latter has the better layout/formatting.
