9:09 PM
Here is a video from the Latin-related event that was organized here in August:

Hello!
Cool!

Hi!
I don't think there are many publicly available recordings of me speaking Latin.
(Not that that would be a particularly cool part of the video. For some reason they did not edit my voice out.)

Yay!
There was a bit too much noise to easily understand you.
But it was cool.
Where was Sibelius?
Surely not at the beginning? That sounded like modern Americanised pop music?

@Cerberus Do you know the hymn "Finlandia"?

I...think I must have listened to it in the past, but I don't remember it clearly.
Where in the video is it played?
I'll look Finlandia up on Youtube.

9:18 PM
Starting at about 0:25.

Ah, so it's mixed with some weird synthetic rhythm.

The hymn is only a part of Finlandia, but it's the most famous part. Starts here around 6:08:
@Cerberus For some reason, yes.

I'm listening to the version from the new Helsinki music hall.
It's nice.
It's cool to have seen you on video!

Did it match your expectation?

It surpassed it!
I liked your pochet.
Or what do you call that?

9:34 PM
You mean the giraffe?

Probably!
I couldn't tell its exact species.

I'm not sure what you call that accessory.

A pochet in Dutch.

I had to google "pochet" to see what it is, but it's close enough.

Wikipaedia has no links to English, nor to Finnish.

9:36 PM
Perhaps "pocket adornment" would be understandable, but there must be a better word.
At least a finer one.

Heh.
Van Dale says dress / breast-pocket handkerchief.

Well, that's not exactly a handkerchief.

It originally was.

But we'd probably call it a pocket handkerchief (taskunenäliina) in Finnish.

Ah OK.

9:38 PM
I know, but I wouldn't use my giraffe as one.

You could.

Actually the giraffe was on the same duty today. I only just got my dark suit off.
I was at a formal dinner celebrating a friend's thesis defense.

You're in pyjamas?
I'm sure the giraffe was honoured.
Was it an interesting thesis?
Or completely unintelligible?

Yes, at least understandable.
It was actually computational and I'm not a computational person, but it was more understandable than many pure math dissertations.

Good.

9:40 PM
@Cerberus Of course, but it must be used to it. It was far from being the first time.

Even so, who knows? It might be replaced with some other animal at any given time...

@Cerberus I've sometimes had a monkey instead, but only at very informal events.

The giraffe is formal?

@Cerberus In fact, it seems that giraffe is not a species.

No penguin?

9:43 PM
@Cerberus To me it is.

I read that there are several species.
But I'm sure yours is of a specific species.
Noted.

@Cerberus So am I, but I never figured out which one.
@Cerberus Wouldn't it be an overkill to have your handkerchief wear a tux?

@JoonasIlmavirta You could paint the pattern of a species of your liking onto it.
@JoonasIlmavirta Well, you said formal!

@Cerberus What kind of a handkerchief would that tux have, then?

Hmm a complicated, if not infinite, dilemma.

9:48 PM
Recursive clothing must have been studied...
Regarding recursion and giraffes:
Disturbing.

10:07 PM
Hah!
Quite disturbing indeed.

10:21 PM
The thing in the video is the last sentence of my opening speech:
> Spero acroases varias vos de connexionibus inter linguas, nationes et phaenomena alia monere, vobis delectare, atque demonstrare nos omnes hoc fine septimanae versari posse Athenis Finlandiae.

10:41 PM
Any experts at reading Latin court hand who can help read this over on Genealogy & Family History SE?

Q: Reading entry from Quarter Sessions Order Book of Dorset, England 1682-1693?

@HarryVervet Some might argue that that's not far from my handwriting, but I can't read that at all. If you have a good reason to believe the text is in Latin, you can ask for a transcription and translation at our site.

@JoonasIlmavirta It's definitely Latin, I've just been struggling with it and wondered if anyone here could help

@HarryVervet Better ask it at the site than in the chat, I think. I hope someone can help.

@JoonasIlmavirta It's a bit early to be duplicating the question on another site, but if it remains unanswered in a couple weeks I'll suggest it be posted here

@HarryVervet Ok. Can you leave a comment there suggesting the possibility of migration, with green light from a Latin mod? It's good if people know their options early.

11:09 PM
@HarryVervet I'll look at it...

@JoonasIlmavirta It's definitely on topic for Genealogy so I don't think it's appropriate to migrate it
@Cerberus Cheers

@HarryVervet You are right. Cross-posting is what I wanted to say. The question is valid and interesting on both sites. You might want to check this meta question about it, but the rules are not very strict.

@HarryVervet Hmm Ancestry.com will not allow me to view more, for some reason. You don't happen to have more of that page?
To get used to the hand.
I think you're right that that line starts with Arthurus Bewcy.
The insular r is like that.

@Cerberus Just added a larger excerpt from the page

I'm not used to reading insular script, but perhaps I can figure it out.
Ah, cool.

11:24 PM
As it happens Ancestry.co.uk is on a free access promotion this weekend so you should be able to view the whole plea book at this link (will require registering a free account)

11:35 PM
@HarryVervet Ah, that works!
