The problem is that some people don't see that they behave in such a ghastly way. Not even if you'd punch them in the face with it.

@Asaf: Clearly you're the set theory pimp... :P
Oct 29, 2011 19:30
No, you should learn set theory.

Well, the more experienced you get, the more you answer your own questions...
Oct 29, 2011 18:09
Okay, it's the purpose of this site to answer questions, but I think trying to get people to think and figure it out by themselves is much more valuable than having an answer.
Oct 29, 2011 16:23
No, "vector" and "arbitrary vector" :-P

Sorry to be annoying, but does anyone here play minecraft and is free at 7 UTC today?
Oct 29, 2011 12:15
@RajeshD he may be a good mathematician, but from his comments, he doesn't sound very good to have as an advisor.
Oct 29, 2011 12:00
@RajeshD My usual way to treat such situations is to start with hypothesis that he is half-right and half-wrong
Oct 29, 2011 11:53
@JM whatever ) I was always wishing that the wolf wins
Oct 28, 2011 20:17
Never name stuff after yourself. Also he invented them.

"Why do mathematicians absolutely hate ravioli?"
Oct 27, 2011 20:34
@SrivatsanNarayanan I don't know. You need not be, if you ask a well-thought out and well-crafted question the worst that can happen is that people tell you, okay maybe this is a bit elementary, although elementary depends on the field. Ask something simple in topology or analysis and people will respond. Ask something simple in commutative algebra and people will tear you to pieces...

@AsafKaragila I hear proofs are terrible substitutes for sleep. Is it true after all?
Oct 27, 2011 15:42
Colorful guy, that tb. And he blames his IP address for that.
Oct 27, 2011 14:44
@JM though if you leave I will lose much more from the lack of you in this chat, than from the rep you gave me with upvotes
Oct 27, 2011 00:29
@tb : Hah, I didn't remember my own question there.
Oct 26, 2011 23:15
So probably you're right after all, *grumble*
Oct 26, 2011 21:48
I have plenty of stars left.
Oct 26, 2011 21:47
Remove the stars, so it won't be on that list.
Oct 26, 2011 21:10
@Asaf: Well, you have to be somewhat morbid to like the AoC that much, don't you :P
Oct 26, 2011 20:26
Arturo is perhaps the most important reason I believe in a rep cap.
Oct 26, 2011 16:39
I wish I can star KCd's blurbs.
Oct 26, 2011 13:00
but then again, you could say there's no such thing as 'overuse of algebra', and you'd be right, too!
Oct 25, 2011 21:18
It can be slightly frustrating that easier questions get much more votes. But, there are people that spend a lot more time than me on long (and complicated) posts and still don't get many votes.

When others named @anon get pinged it goes in my inbox too.

back in my homological algebra days I used "xymatrix" in the xypic (or xy) package. I haven't tried using tikz for commutative diagrams, but I use it all the time for pictures

@robjohn Murky? I fear not the command line. (Asaf 2011)
Oct 24, 2011 13:10
@JonasTeuwen: we tried to figure out what was the reason for you to skip the lunch and decided that there are no such reasons, so shame on you
Oct 24, 2011 06:42
that grass was greener, the light was brighter. with friends surrounded, nights of wonder
Oct 23, 2011 22:37
@robjohn: I tend not to upvote such answers, there are enough people who do.
Oct 23, 2011 22:37
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.
Oct 23, 2011 17:05
Wow, that's the first time I've been accused of being funny.
Oct 23, 2011 14:22
Above all, our theory explains why simplicity is so highly desirable. To understand this there is no need for us to assume a ‘principle of economy of thought’ or anything of the kind. Simple statements, if knowledge is our object, are to be prized more highly than less simple ones because they tell us more; because their empirical content is greater; and because they are better testable. Karl Popper, The Logic of Scientific Discovery (1959), 43. Simplicity and degree of falsifiability. P. 142

If you've taken out most of the usual periodic functions out of commission, then what in this green earth are you going to build your appproximants from?
Oct 23, 2011 13:22
@robjohn: that's probably because it is ornamented with an Orn- and and Uhlenbeck too much
Oct 23, 2011 13:10
@tb: Now I'm adding bibliography to other people's posts too... shame on you :-)
