Q: In memoriam: Bram Moolenaar

Martin TournoijIt looks like Bram passed away a few days ago. Bram had been spending over 30 years on Vim; and not just "the occasional patch/bugfix", but significant amounts, and almost every single day for some years. The number of people who spent that much time working on Open Source is very small, and the ...

There seems to be nothing to talk about.. what about some shameless self-promotion: I won July! Woohoo! While y'all were on vacation, relaxing and having a great time I feverishly typed Vim answers, a slave to game mechanics. Woohoo anyway

If you look at @statox and @MartinTournoij's early postings you'll see it's a pretty common phenomenon!

That mirrors my own experience when I got started back in the day :)

@VivianDeSmedt I agreed with an existing close vote, though for a different reason. The question is far too broad (and barely formulated as a question): "I want X features; is there a guide and examples to setup vimrc?" If you think you can edit it into shape, by all means, do so (close-edit-reopen should be considered a normal, healthy lifecyle for questions).

 I'd like to organize a vi.se celebration of Bram (probably on Meta). Suggestions welcome.

@VivianDeSmedt This site probably isn't big enough to be a target; and there isn't that much to gain. Stack Overflow points are much more "valuable": it looks nice on your CV, it allows people to ask their crappy questions (some people's livelihood depend on being able to ask questions on SO), social value among your peers, etc.

Quick reminder that we have an election for moderator going on... It's not too burdensome, but Ben and I could definitely use some help, especially from those of you who are very active here... Consider nominating yourself! And let us know if you have questions about being a moderator. vi.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1547/18609

Since there's an accepted answer, I'll look at setting this up tomorrow; if there are any changes or concerns I'll push back by another 24h each time to let things settle. vi.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1577/10604

Pretty sure I must've mentioned this here before, but a few years back I dated a girl called "Vi" for a bit; I thought it was a bit funny, and I ended up showing her Vim, spawned from a terminal in dwm of course. She just looked confused and asked "why don't you use your computer like a normal person?!"

I've tried to describe my need and part of my workflow in github.com/LucHermitte/lh-vim-lib/blob/master/doc/Project.md, but I'm quite sure very few see where I'm going to, and that the rationale could be explained in better terms.

@Navaro no need to apologize. We’re quite a bit smaller than SO, so responses can take longer depending on who’s in what timezones :) I like to think we have a friendly active community though, so please stick around!

Nice. I started using it because I watched a friend of mine editing text ridiculously fast (and in the terminal too!) and it kinda blew my mind. He was kind of my Linux Mentor
