@Seninha Kind of, but there's no black-and-white distinction between content and functional words, only a large continuum. All words depend somewhat on context for their meaning, though some are more dependent than others. Every functional word originates from a lexical word historically; its meaning is slowly bleached over time through the process of grammaticalisation (see Hopper and Traugott's book for a standard treatment of the topic).

@WiccanKarnak Please stop with your tag wiki edits - they are not appropriate. Tag wikis are not for defining topics, but to indicate how the tags are to be used. Most of the edits you have suggested are for tags which don't really need that, and many of them are rather biased explanations of only some theories of linguistics.

@TriG Now I'm tempted to join Hinduism SE just so I could downvote that post.

@Greg Lee I think it's not false to claim that the majority of regular answerers here won't give full-fleged answers to bare "Please draw these trees for me" requests. There are of course some people who do this, but usually such questions get closed by the community faster than there is a first answer in the sense of a detailed solution in the style that the OP hoped for.
Hints like the one you gave/regularly give (e.g. applying constituency tests to confirm one's attempts) are different. They are largely independent on the underlying theory and they are helpful irrespective of how well th

Q: Organizing our Linguistics Blog

AlenannoSE sites do not have a blog by default but we can request one. I ask you to read this blog entry, which is related to this topic. Keeping in mind that we should post there at least once a week (not necessarily the same person), we could catch the interest of some important linguist and this woul...

By the way, the Linguistics room is really the nicest room on Stackexchange. Everybody here is always super civil. Even I get the niceness virus when I am here.

It's true that Linguistics dedicates itself more to spoken language, but I don't see why exclude something interesting as the writing systems.

@HizHa Please take your concerns to Meta. It is not appropriate to continue on chat like this for over a week, bringing up vague accusations, using code names for people in the community, and maligning these people.
Oct 15, 2016 03:46
@HizHa Sorry, but it's rather hard to follow your concerns here in chat, especially without links to the posts and comments. I'd encourage you to post in Meta instead, that way the whole community will be able to see and help you address your concerns.

I once suggested compiling a list of Very Common Questions, by hand, which would be displayed next to the box where you type a new question. That should weed out most of the dupes.

Of course, there are other reasons than grammaticality why we may find an utterance jarring.

Q: Linguistics needs some new leadership. Is it you?

Ana HevesiFor the past several weeks I've been on the lookout for a new pro-tem moderator for Linguistics. Unfortunately, I've had a bit of trouble finding an enthusiastic, dedicated individual to take part in some community building. So, I am turning to the community. A bit about the job, and what we're...
