Original content generation
@MadaraUchiha ok, go
Can we? Should we? What do we?
@MadaraUchiha What exactly is that?
The suggestion I got, was to create some sort of useful/interesting content, in order to attract people.
@MadaraUchiha I suggested we make a mascot character. I'm still in favor of that.
Mar 2, 2013 19:26
Extreme example, let's collaborate into writing a manga.
@LoganM I agree with that too
@LoganM A bit different from what I'm suggesting.
@MadaraUchiha I agree. :)
I'm suggesting something that'll be continuous, people would be able to "subscribe" or follow or whatever it, tell their friends and that'll eventually attract folks to our site.
@MadaraUchiha do you think we can do that?
Mar 2, 2013 19:27
@MadaraUchiha I'm not sure we can keep it up...
That's a huge effort.
@JNat No, but like I said, that was an extreme example.
It could be xkcd style too.
@MadaraUchiha So a manga about our mascot character (for example)
@MadaraUchiha ok ok
I certainly won't be able to contribute much to it.
Mar 2, 2013 19:28
Some simpler examples would be reviews on anime/manga
wont take much effort to draw.
@LoganM like some six panel simple thing each week?
Stuff you post weekly/whatever on YouTube
@MadaraUchiha I agree to reviews/suggestions
@MadaraUchiha We can creat a mascot and use it in a short 4 koma like series like with digichara

Q: Should questions that are unanswerable until later (unaired) episodes/chapters be allowed?

MysticialShould we allow questions of the type: Currently airing show or manga. The question is unanswerable as of all the released episodes/chapters. The question is likely to be revealed later on. Because these questions are temporarily unanswerable, they may be considered "not constructive" as they...

@HellButterfly Yeah, thanks.
@MadaraUchiha lol
Is it just me, or is the one-box screwing up my AV?
That reminds me of something, let me see if I find it quick.
nvm, I rf'ed and it fixed it
Mar 2, 2013 19:30
But that's just one example
What do you think we can do?
Hopefully, it's something collaborative, where users can actually join from the outside and help
@Krazer I think something like that could work, and something more elaborate probably won't
We could do something like the one I shared above.
It's just like a graphical review, if you will, wont require much effort.
@Deidara-senpai That's a LOT of frames, though.
Mar 2, 2013 19:32
Yeah, just an example.
Well, I think for now we should stick to some review/recommendation sessions
weekly or every two weeks
IDK
@JNat Alright, how do we do that?
Videos? Blog entries?
Say how about some of us do a youtube video once in a while, and somewhere in there, mention something like, "Hey by the way, I saw this great question ... check it out."
@MadaraUchiha not sure. SF&F has something scheduled on their chat called "comic book recommendation"
I don't know the frequency or how the final format of the recommendation comes out
@JNat Yes, but the point is to do something outside of chat.
People from the outside don't know of our chat..
Mar 2, 2013 19:36
@MadaraUchiha yes, indeed
@MadaraUchiha SE has blogs, but all of the sites with them are graduated or close. I don't know if they'd let us have one.
I'm not convinced that we'll be able to support it.
Even if one of us can do it single-handedly, if the person burns out...
Again, I think it's something that we can do collaboratively, as a community.
@MadaraUchiha we could promote our chat in FB/G+ to gather more users here maybe
Mar 2, 2013 19:38
I agree with @Mysticial. One person doing it is not sustainable.
Ideally, it should be posted elsewhere YouTube, or an indexed blog.
@MadaraUchiha so it comes back to the chat, and your only issue is about what comes out to the public afterwards, right?
Ideally, when people look for "X vs Y" they'll reach us.
@JNat How do you collaboratively write a review?
@MadaraUchiha not the writing part, but what we choose to review maybe
@MadaraUchiha a review discussion on each part
Mar 2, 2013 19:41
BTW question was edited. I think it might be okay now:

Q: what is the color of a manga paper?

shnisakathe background color of a manga paper when scanned online is changed by the scanlators to white (#FFFFFF). However, this is not the background color in an actual manga book. the color in the manga book looks little grayer in the paper. What I am trying to do, is to publish a manga online with the...

@LoganM If it receives enough reopen votes, I'll reopen it.
Waiting for at least 2-3.
I think it could still be better, but I can tolerate having it reopened.
3 upvotes and 2 reopen votes (including mine)
go for it
4 reopen votes, actually.
@Mysticial Can you fix the title capitalization? I only ask you since you just edited it.
@Eric I did already. Unless I missed one?
Mar 2, 2013 19:46
The title: "what is the color of a manga paper?"
I did it
oh... lol the title.
I always overlook that.
lol..
now nuke the OP's comment. :)
@Mysticial About the moderators? :P Nah, leave it as is.
Mar 2, 2013 19:47
We should get back to discussing reviews. Sorry for the distraction.
Alright
I think anime/manga reviews are a good idea.
We need to find a place to publish those though
We would need a good variety of things to not be all Naruto. lol :)
@Mysticial true
What kinda of site already has a high google rank, that we can hijack?
Mar 2, 2013 19:50
For instance, I used to own a mIRC forum. So what I did was open a wikia about it, and point articles to my forum.
Worked like a charm. (both for Google ranks, and for people).
We can't really hijack Wikia here, though. Which is too bad. MAL isn't necessarily a bad idea, though.
It depends on the context.
That site used to provide programming support and discussion.
So wikia kinda fit the bill.
@Mysticial MAL is pretty risky. We should form a MAL group just to get awareness, but publishing reviews there is tricky. You need a lot of upvotes for it to become visible, so it's not good for people who want to follow us as a site.
It's a tricky business. It took at least a year before I was able to get my website to the top of the Google result for "multithreaded Pi".
Yeah. But Wikia doesn't fit review content.
Mar 2, 2013 19:52
We're doing reviews now. Do we have an established site that's also editable?
Will SE let us have a blog? If not, lots of people do anime reviews on Wordpress. We could have an unofficial community blog there.
@MadaraUchiha why not make a tumblr blog?
or a blogger from google?
I think Tumblr or Wordpress is not a bad idea. Something we can get hosted by someone else.
That's what I was thinking too..
Mar 2, 2013 19:54
ok, so which is it?
Tumblr
or Wordpress?
lets start with a simple tumblr and move to WP once we get more followers
Which one is the most customizable?
@LoganM no idea
Wordpress is FAR more customizable, but Tumblr is easier to set up.
@LoganM WP
Mar 2, 2013 19:56
What are you guys trying to do?
@shnisaka creating some blog for manga/anime reviews
something we could do collaboratively to attract more audience
we'd do it weekly or every two weeks
reviews.. why do not you use the tags on this site.
reviews and/or recommendations
@shnisaka what do you mean?
do the reviews here?
yes!
@shnisaka this is a Question & Answer site
Mar 2, 2013 19:58
@shnisaka We're discussing the topic of providing interesting and original content in order to attract people.
Not reviewing questions/answers :)
@Eric If we start with Tumblr now, it'll be more difficult later if we want to switch to WP. But if Tumblr is sufficient for everything then we don't need to switch. I don't know because I've only ever used WP for math blogging since it supports TeX
I do not think reviews will attract more people. However, if somebody want to write a review (ouside of this site) you have mangafox for manga. and there is a bunch of anime sites that allows you to right reviews
write*
@LoganM We should figure out which one has more people experienced in it. I've never used either, though.
@shnisaka Pressing the Up button allows you to edit recent messages.
@MadaraUchiha I didn't know the Up shortcut
nice
Mar 2, 2013 20:00
@MadaraUchiha thanks for the info
@JNat Same here
@shnisaka Anyway, what do you think that would attract new users?
The idea is to collaboratively create interesting content that'll attract folks from the outside.
It shouldn't be something that one person does, but rather something we all do as a community.
tips on amateur anime and/or manga production?
you want more visitors right?
look at the tag describtion. two lines just to explain Bleach!! that is not enough.
Mar 2, 2013 20:03
the community as a whole can edit every tag.. and add more information.. like the genre .. summary and all
@JNat still short
@shnisaka so do you mean we should have a complete wiki on every tag?
unless you mean for our tag wiki to be a reference (as opposed to bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Bleach_Wiki), I'm not sure how that could attract more visitors
not a complete wiki. but we can diffentaly add the main characters in the wiki and give some short summary about them.
this will bring more people
what are other people's thoughts on this?
do you think this is relevant?
@MadaraUchiha @Mysticial @Krazer @LoganM
I don't think it will help attract search engine goers. The tag should not be the first thing that comes up. I doubt StackOverflow is when you search "C++".
Tag wikis are meant to give a user a idea of what a tag covers not specific content pretaining to it
Mar 2, 2013 20:07
@JNat I don't think it's necessary. We're better off compiling links to other sites which have more information IMO.
@LoganM I think the same
What's the risk of something backfiring and giving us a bad impression?
@Mysticial I don't think there's any risk associated to it, but it's not a good way to spend our efforts. At least not right now at the size we're at.
We can link to more descriptive sources but I don't think a summary of characters is in scope
I don't think we're gonna be able to put together the best tag wikis for every tag.
Mar 2, 2013 20:09
unless there is a tag about a specific one
@Krazer indeed, which is what we've been doing
@shnisaka How will it bring more people?
search engines I guess.
sometimes I search for ichigo.. not for bleach. for example.
We expect most search engine traffic to point to the questions, and not the tag wikis.
It's very unlikely that a tag wiki would be on a high place in google.
Even if it has a lot of good data
@MadaraUchiha do they ever point to tags?
Mar 2, 2013 20:10
@JNat I doubt it.
@JNat Tags are indexed, but that's not something we should count on.
There's no way we're gonna be able to beat wikipedia and wikia on searches for title names.
I do not know, what are you guys planning to do? a blog or wordpress or tumblr is pretty much the same. why do not you stay on one site and improve it.
If you aren't literally the 1st or 2nd hit, forget it.
I searched for "naruto anime stack exchange", and it pointed to new Naruto questions. I doubt we can do better than that. And I also doubt it'll ever point to the tag description in itself
Mar 2, 2013 20:11
@shnisaka Because the focus now is to get more people.
Tag wikis have shit visibility even on SO... so I don't think it's gonna work at all.
@shnisaka we need to advertise ourselves
The best we can do is ask searchable questions.
It's a critical issue, we will be at risk of being closed if we don't get enough traffic.
@MadaraUchiha Is our traffic going up or down?
Mar 2, 2013 20:12
@MadaraUchiha It's worth noting that our traffic is still increasing. We hit 300 v/d today.
Based on what I've seen, they won't close sites that have steadily increasing traffic.
if you want an effective advertisment.. then you need to contact anime/manga website owners and make a deal with them.
They won't, but I'm still a bit worried about our user count
@Mysticial sometimes up, sometimes down. the average visits per day is going up
Or you can just ping Shog into here and ask him directly. "Are we in trouble or not?"
If he avoids the question, we know we're in trouble.
Mar 2, 2013 20:14
@Mysticial We probably aren't in trouble yet.
@MadaraUchiha Our total user count is terrible. When it comes to active users we're doing fine, but we're having trouble attracting people to come and register and then leave without doing anything
We're still fairly new, and as you said, traffic is rising steadily.
@LoganM That's where I'm worried. Our avid user count is in the crapper. We need 150 and we have 61.
@Eric 69, not that it makes much difference
That's a projection of 90 days, though. Currently it's 63 (I was close).
Either way, I think we're not at the point yet of being desperate.
But we still need to be working toward a larger user base.
Mar 2, 2013 20:17
I do not think you guys will get more visitors. Most of anime/manga fans go to a website that have anime/manga they can watch. I remember mangahelpers.com, they were really famous but whenever they disabled watching manga on their site.. their visitors average went downhill.
We haven't starting redditing any of the type B questions on r/anime yet.
And we still haven't played the 4chan card either...
So...
more visibility will definitely help
@shnisaka That I can agree with.
@Mysticial that's a dangerous card to play
Problem is, we can't really provide online anime watching services.
Mar 2, 2013 20:18
@Krazer I know. Saved only for final ditch desperation.
@Mysticial I think we should do that.
@MadaraUchiha and this is why tumblr or wordpress will not work.
@Eric SmugMug is still around with only 19 after 400 days. Not that I think we should follow them, but I don't think we're in imminent danger based on that.
Start steadily redditing type B questions.
@MadaraUchiha It's a card I've been holding back to see how the site stabilizes. But if we want to resume. Then we can do so.
But we need to coordinate so we don't have two submissions at the same time.
Mar 2, 2013 20:20
@LoganM Imminent, no. But it's something to keep a close eye on. We're at "Okay" or "Steadily Increasing" in every other department.
@Mysticial The previous attempts did give us some visibility, I got a gold announcer badge on the Pokemon question.
Which means at least 1000 people followed the link.
Facebook!! there is many groups on facebook that you guys can contact and ask to share your link. I do not think they will mind!
@MadaraUchiha It was the wrong audience though.
So we may do better on r/anime.
@shnisaka yes, we have a facebook account
@Mysticial I say go for it. Post another question on reddit.
Mar 2, 2013 20:21
@MadaraUchiha which one?
@shnisaka Have any specific group/page in mind?
@JNat I'm trying to decide...
@MadaraUchiha yes.. wait a sec.
I'm not gonna do it this moment. Maybe next week when things settle down for me.
@Mysticial an unanswered one could be a good idea
Mar 2, 2013 20:22
@Mysticial We had one that we wanted to, didn't we?
@JNat I don't think so... We want something well answered to be a good example.
We could put a few unanswered ones on the homepage.
@Mysticial ok, point taken
In any case, before we do any r/anime submissions, we need to flood the homepage with both answered and unanswered Type B questions that appeal the to the r/anime audience.
I think we'd have the best exposure on twitter
@Mysticial This brings me to a question I have, which is related: What types of questions do we want more of on the site?
Mar 2, 2013 20:23
It's suited for that kind of thing
Not genres or specific shows, but types of questions. I mean, we don't want all lists, for example.
@Eric right now, we have a better balance, but still heavily biased toward shounen.
oh
I don't think it matters. Most of them are plot questions?
By the way, speaking of bringing people in, our community ads on RPG still aren't active.
@LoganM I've created an account there just to vote it up

Mar 2, 2013 20:24
can't do more than that
Right now, the only high-quality candidates we have for r/anime are:
- The Black Lagoon question
- The Clannad question
keep attacking those mange pages.. wait I will give you some anime pages that I know of.
@Mysticial I'm not sure what the majority is, actually.
@Krazer you think we should create an unofficial twitter account then?
@JNat I think Krazer is on the right track. But do any of our community members use Twitter?
Mar 2, 2013 20:26

@Eric I had a twitter account, then I disabled it
I can enable it again
@JNat Alright. I had one but I was never into it much more than following a few feeds.
@Eric same
We can try link backs to the SE from twitter for specific questions
@LoganM Is it at all possible break up that wall of text on your Clannad answer?
Mar 2, 2013 20:27
retweets will help more with visibility than reddit
People are just gonna go tl;dr and leave.
@Mysticial we can add pictures
@Mysticial Yes. I can do it. But I'm still really busy with school.
Honestly I don't think we need to worry too much about this. We're gaining avid users at a rate of ~1 per day, so we'll hit 150 in a few months if that keeps up. No need to rush it.
Mar 2, 2013 20:29
I hesitate to recommend this one as a reddit candidate. But here it goes:
14
Q: Why are tentacles prevalent in anime?

user277What is the reason/motivation for the prevalence of tentacles (possibly NSFW link) in anime (esp. hentai)? Did the anime subculture lead to it or does it stem from various aspects (possibly obscure) of Japanese art/culture?

@Mysticial needs more pictures
@LoganM I agree
That's would actually help it. And I'm serious.
Obviously stay away from pure hentai, but I think it can be done.
@Mysticial TLR isn't hentai. Just sayin'
Mar 2, 2013 20:31
@Mysticial what if we added mosaics?
We'll see. Post your ideas here. And edit them in when we agree on something.
By ideas, I mean the actual pictures themselves.
I actually like that question a lot (as a candidate, not as what you're thinking, pervs)
@Mysticial I feel like this is sort of off-topic at the moment. IMO we're better off discussing this later.
I need to get lunch anyways...
lol this came up when I searched for "anime tentacles"
Mar 2, 2013 20:34
Yeah, this meeting ran quite overtime. But we got some things done, at least.
um... no.
LOL
@LoganM Perfect! :D
Btw, who currently owns the FB and G+ pages?
Mar 2, 2013 20:35
There's one non-erotic tentacle scene in SOA that can probably be used.
I do, both of them.
@Eric Madara-sama
Still looking for a way to transfer/add adminship.
You have to invite me to become "a manager". From there, you can transfer ownership, or not. (I don't think it really matters, either way I can add posts.)
As for FB, I used to know, but I don't anymore.
@Eric same here
Mar 2, 2013 20:38
Lemme see...
From Sword Art Online.
At the very center of the genre that appeals to r/anime.
@Mysticial no, this:
@Krazer That's a good one too.
@Krazer That is perfect.
I agree, it's perfect.
Now get a high-quality screenshot from it.
Or embed the video directly.
I'd say embed the video directly.
Mar 2, 2013 20:41
Ah, there we go.
Yeah, I don't think it can be easily shown in one shot.
@Eric I'll need your email
Don't post it here though
Hrmmm hrmmm
@Mysticial We can't embed videos, and that video is terrible quality. Someone should go get the BDs and screencap that.
@MadaraUchiha You have access to it.
You're mod.
@MadaraUchiha I'll follow you on G+.
Mar 2, 2013 20:42
@Eric Is it the same email you used with your SE account?
Yeah, it is.
I need lunch for the 3rd time.
laters
@Mysticial See ya.
I'm gonna have dinner
bbl
@Eric Isn't that from StarCraft?
Invitation sent
Mar 2, 2013 20:43
@Mysticial here's a HQ ver: youtube.com/watch?v=-iXUKBWZeC0
@MadaraUchiha Yup. And from 2004, lol.
@JNat and @Mysticial are leaving. Are we ending the meeting here then?
@Deidara-senpai is your facebook email same as your Stack Exchange email?
@LoganM Yup, I think so.
@LoganM Yes, we are.
