ayyyyyyyyyyy golfposting is now in urban dictionary urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Golfposting
3
I didn't know this term.
@Adám I coined it
Why isn't code golf there?
@Adám good question. Let's fix it
definitions for code golf please
> Code-golf is a competition to solve a particular programming problem in the fewest bytes of source code.
Dec 21, 2021 14:45
sounds good to me
The Wikipedia definition is actually incorrect:
> Code golf is a type of recreational computer programming competition in which participants strive to achieve the shortest possible source code that implements a certain algorithm.
that sounds an awful lot like an unobservable requirement
vtc for clarity
I was going to add it, when it told me I had to sign in...
@UnrelatedString Agreed. Let's close down Wikipedia.

Ok, I've submitted.
Dec 21, 2021 14:47
@Adám good idea
@grandBagel cmon i was doing it
ah well
@Adám how much of this is wrong in your professional opinion?
The last word.
ah good, thats what i thought too but i wasnt sure if i was missing anything else
@Adám Yeah, I agree. I don't think it has to be an algorithm.
i didnt know how to phrase it without being incredibly verbose
my question, i mean
idk
Dec 21, 2021 14:54
@AaroneousMiller okay I've added the eval as apol instruction.
This site is probably the easiest site to get the Matryoshka secret hat (trigger has been revealed) :P
@cairdcoinheringaahing Three down, two more to go.
I've updated Wikipedia.

@Adám nice
cde glf
@PyGamer0 no, it's Pode Polf
Dec 21, 2021 14:58
cmc etiquitte is "just post one whenever" right
Yeah, you can post CMCs whenever you want
well, i want.
cmc: given two positive integers A and B, output all integers whose positive factors all lie between [A-B and A+B] inclusive. (if needed: a factor F of some integer K is an integer such that F times another factor = K)
@cairdcoinheringaahing Huh, it seems one gets it on their parent site.
sorry for defining factors, i just watched the bertrands paradox vid on numberphile and now im not sure if anything can be assumed anymore

@Adám Which one, Thought Bubble?
Yes.
> Several new languages have been created specifically with code golfing in mind. Examples include GolfScript, Flogscript and Vyxal, which are Turing-complete languages which provide constructs for concisely expressing ideas in code.
from wiki
Vyxal
@PyGamer0 that is stupidly incomplete
@lyxaaaallalllalalallala
@Adám Yeah, that's often how chat hats work
Dec 21, 2021 15:01
@PyGamer0 We should flood Wikipedia with another 100 examples.
4
@PyGamer0 ah yes, everyone's favorite golflang: Vyxaaaallalllalalallala
5
@Adám imma do tat now justwait
@PyGamer0 include APOL
no
ok done
> Examples include GolfScript, Jelly, Husk, 05AB1E, Pyth, CJam and Vyxal,
Dec 21, 2021 15:04
finally some peace
@GingerIndustries its a WIP right?
Did you notice the bit that said
> Other popular languages include 05AB1E and Jelly.
see i didnt include flax :)
@PyGamer0 aren't all languages?
@cairdcoinheringaahing wdym
You don't need to include every golfing language under the sun, and both Jelly and 05AB1E were already mentioned
Plus, if you were going to add in more examples, the better place would be in the "Other popular languages include ...." sentence
Dec 21, 2021 15:07
hm
"Linus & Lucy" plays on a loop in my head yall don't know what it's like in here
@thejonymyster Could you give an example?
@cairdcoinheringaahing done
> The challenging nature of aggressively optimizing for program size has itself long been recognized, for example a 1962 coding manual for Regnecentralen's GIER computer notes that "it is a time-consuming sport to code with the least possible number of instructions" and recommends against it for practical programming.
My father was there!
Dec 21, 2021 15:11
huh
that's cool
@Adám well now you can claim "golfing since 1962"
No, my father, not me.
He never mentioned golfing on the GIER though.
@Adám i didn't specify did I
Brudzewsky Golf Inc. – golfing since 1962
5
He did mention golfing at IBM, where he worked 1968–1972.
Dec 21, 2021 15:13
@cairdcoinheringaahing 2520's factors include numbers like 60, which are more than 7. i probably phrased the question poorly
No, that's an N-dash – not a minus −
@thejonymyster The year 2520: A time when freedom and self-expression have been outlawed
4
@Adám P-dash or NP-dash
He did mention golfing at IBM, and indeed, they wanted a specific algorithm, but he said he could only get it under the goal byte bit limit if he used a different algorithm.
Dec 21, 2021 15:15
imagine bit limit
2
Bytes hadn't really caught on yet.
Back in my day, we used BITS to code!
@Adám Somewhere in the future... Code this in under 1 bleet. (Remember, 1 bleet is 8 bytes.)
none of this new-fangled "Jello" and "Vittles" stuff
He had a manual hole puncher at home. He'd punch out his source code bit-by-bit.

Dec 21, 2021 15:17
@Adám that's an awful pun i applaud you for it
No pun intended.
too late now
i feel like thats just what the word means
Can you explain?
@Adám "bit by bit"
little by little/literal bit by literal bit
Dec 21, 2021 15:19
@GingerIndustries Oh now I see the pun.
How else would you express that it was done one bit at a time (that'd be as punny, no?)
@Adám precisely
@grandBagel you're welcome
I guess they are called bits because they're the smallest… bits of machine storage.
2
Vyxal was added to the Code Golf wikipedia page by Math
@Adám still doing it
Dec 21, 2021 15:20
"binary digits"
@AaroneousMiller diff
so they could also be called nagis
@cairdcoinheringaahing Yeah, but the pun must have been obvious.

also according to the reply number this room has 59,946,218 messages (as of this writing)
That's the total number of chat messages across all rooms
well that's still a shit ton
Only 1994211 here.
@Adám still a lot
So this room has every 60th chat message on SE.
Dec 21, 2021 15:22
This room is over 10 years old

@cairdcoinheringaahing Jesus
inb4 the 2000000th message in this room contains a rickroll
@AaroneousMiller wouldn't be TNB if it didn't

Dec 21, 2021 15:24
This is the 3980th day since TNB started, which means we average ~500 messages a day

sounds abt right
Goes up and down over time. Currently the official rate is 639 per day.
lets bring that up to 690
I was about to post that.
Dec 21, 2021 15:25
that sounds doable
how many are we at rn

651 today
okay, that's uh
39 more
Reminder to not post noise for the sake of having more messages
we may overshoot a bit
@cairdcoinheringaahing that won't be a problem
