@ssb わあ~私はまだ42日

1:06 AM
my brain is a dry sponge
I need to study more!

Yes! Must study!
And by study, I mean play video games
This game just used the word 頼もしい
If that comes from 頼む・・・ are there other adjectives made from verbs like that?

Ha, watch more TV
if only doctor who was in japanese on netflix...

2:07 AM
one 入学式 down

1 hour later…
3:28 AM
Ah! Now i have 52910 L points. That is slightly more than 30

9 hours later…
12:48 PM
Can すごく work as a intensifier?
I want to know > I really want to know
知りたい > すごく知りたい ?

Yup

2 hours later…
2:27 PM
I was thinking about what part of speech a 連用形 is
It seems like it can be a noun: 狙い、近く
Or an adverb: 近く
Or as ... something: 狙い + ます
Or as ... something else, as in て形 before a verb or 中止形
1. is verb or adjective, 2. is adjective only, 3 is verb only, 4 is adjective or verb
You can say 近くあり but not 近くます
Hmm, confusing

I found a paper with more constructions with two をs in coordination. I'm a little confused about how it's written
"Mary-ga [[ John-ni ringo-o 2-tu]-to [Bob-ni banana-o] age-ta."
"Mary-NOM John-DAT apple-ACC 2-CL and Bob-DAT banana-ACC give-PAST"
"Mary gave two apples to John and the bananas to Bob."
I'm not sure what exactly that 2-tu thing is.
NOM DAT ACC PAST all make sense (nominal, dative, accusative, past)
CL is clause I guess?
But what's tu
Oh god. It's 二つ isn't it
Damn you, romaji!
So CL must be like counter or such.

that's not romaji... that's just weird

Well, 2つ vs 2-tu
I agree about the just weird part.
A lot of these ling papers write out stuff like this.

Yeah... I don't actually mind it. It keeps them from getting distracted by kanji for relatively simple sentences

Well, I think it's useful, but I'm not used to it exactly
So sometimes I fail to see what would be obvious to me if it were written more usually T_T Like 2つ = 2-tu
Feeling dumb right about now :-)
マリーが [[ジョンに林檎を二つ] と [ボブにバナナを] あげた。
And now I realize the brackets don't add up to 0.
I guess the last ] goes before あげた

That's irritating... considering that the grouping is probably the whole point of the example

4:18 PM
Second example: [[マリーがジョンに林檎を二つ] と [スーがボブにバナナを]] あげた。
I agree. My guess about where the missing ] goes is based on the second example

bah... it's raining cats, dogs and probably a few moose out there today :/

The paper says "This is puzzling for two reasons. First, it is not clear what syntactic category should be assigned to a constituent like [Subj I-Obj D-Obj]. Second, although such a structure is closer to a clause rather than to a NP, it is the to conjunction particle that is used, not te."
Hello Chocolate!

The sky is clear here. (But I like rain!)
Wow
That wind map is neat.

The other interesting weather site I go to: weatherspark.com
It's particularly good when people are moaning about "It never gets this hot/cold this early".... "well... no... actually we're right around the 30th percentile"

4:26 PM
Wow, this is more fun than Weather Underground

@snailplane 嘆かわしい、恨めしい、忌まわしい、悩ましい?
動詞からの派生語(勇ましい、いらだたしい、嘆かわしい、悩ましい、ねたましい、のろわしい、腹立たしい、喜ばしい)>> I found them here but this page is so hard to read
And here hi.baidu.com/irontrap/item/91f4dd70779d6f13d1dcb346 >>動詞から形容詞への派生 共通部 形容詞 動詞 アタタ 暖かい 暖める アタタ 温かい 温める イ 忌まわしい 忌む ウラ 恨めしい 恨む オソ 恐ろしい 恐れる ケガ 汚らわしい 汚す スズ 涼しい 涼む タダ 正しい 正す タノ 頼もしい 頼む ナゲ 嘆かわしい 嘆く ハ 恥ずかしい 恥じる マギ 紛らわしい 紛らわす
Both pages are hard to read
読みにくい

Oh, thank you! A lot of those seem like 未然形・・・

勇む → 勇ま + しい
悩む → 悩ま + しい
腹立つ → 腹立た + しい
喜ぶ → 喜ば + しい
妬む → 妬ま + しい
呪う → 呪わ + しい
嘆かふ → 嘆かわ + しい
忌まふ → 忌まわ + しい
But 恨めしい and 頼もしい seem different, they have -e and -o
I suppose 恨める is an 一段動詞? So if 恨めしい is from 恨める, then 恨め+しい can still be 未然形
恨める → 恨め + しい
Is there a 頼もう? 頼もう → 頼も + しい

5:26 PM
Didn't しい used to be an emphatic modifier?

Um, maybe! I don't know anything about that

I thought I'd read it was... no idea where I read that though.

I checked all my dictionaries! (That means my two 国語辞典 and also 大辞林/大辞泉 online)
They all said pretty much the same thing (except 集英社 which didn't include it...)
None of them described it similar to "thorough and certain"
It seems to fit though, doesn't it?
I need to memorize the English names for the six forms
imperfective
I know attributive, conclusive/terminal <-- those are obvious
Continuative I can remember because I learned that one in English first
Imperfective..
There's a 古語「たのもう」
I wonder if たのもしい is related to that
たのまむ → たのもう (音便)
Ooh
There's a 好ましい and a 好もしい
That seems like more evidence that it's just a sound change, and that it's underlyingly 頼ま + しい
Oh, and 頼も is a 未然形 form

6:24 PM
A-ha
The わ comes from は from 助動詞「ふ」の未然形
勇む → 勇ま + しい
悩む → 悩ま + しい
腹立つ → 腹立た + しい
喜ぶ → 喜ば + しい
妬む → 妬ま + しい
呪う → 呪わ + しい
頼む → 頼も + しい
好む → 好も + しい
好む → 好ま + しい
嘆かふ → 嘆かわ + しい
忌まふ → 忌まわ + しい
So it's totally regular, except the sound changes aren't completely consistent
I was going to ask that as a question, but I figured it out myself

7:25 PM
@snailplane Ask it anyways

1 hour later…
8:53 PM
ほんまや!
なんで「うら『め』しい」「たの『も』しい」なんやろ??
「好(この)もしい」もあるん?
(irregular 多すぎやわ・・・)

9:43 PM
I think うらめしい is from うらめる... which is the -まる/-める suffix plus the same root as うれい, うれしい, うらやましい
Or is it...
No, it's just 恨む → 恨める, isn't it
No, now I'm confused :-)
Maybe I should ask about め in うらめしい

10:25 PM
@jkerian I'm at a point where I think I know the answer, but writing my own answer is challenging because I want to include details I'm not sure of
It seems weird to ask a question I know the answer to and then not answer it--is that socially acceptable?

Sure... just be sure to give hints :)

11:02 PM
@jkerian I decided to answer it myself this time! :-)
@Chocolate I know there are two 未然形 stems for 五段動詞... -a and -o
Which I think comes from a sound change... 書こう = 書かう = 書か + う
I learned that -a changes to -o before う, like in that example
My guess is that it's the same thing, but I don't understand 100%.
So I might ask a question about that.

未然形って「はしら-ない」「はしっ-た」とかかな
(忘れたww)
「しな-ない」「しん-だ」とか
また明日考えよう・・眠いww

11:18 PM
未然形 =
はしら-ない
はしろ-う
走った = はしり + た contracted to はしっ + た

行こう、は「ゆかう」>>「ゆこう」って変わったそうだし

はしり is the 連用形

おおお
そうだった!
おやすみ~

おやすみ!
Someday I need to learn when to use し at the end of sentences like that.

11:54 PM
I wonder if that し is related to なし
I think I meant it the other way round

The other way around: you wonder if なし is related to that し?
Like... this, maybe? dic.yahoo.co.jp/…

ssb
strangely i can't find particle し in the dictionary
at least on my first search

I wish I understood that particle better.
I've heard it described twice now as a listing particle, with the last し optionally deleted

ssb
i should start going to the yahoo dictionary first
