I am getting fairly competent at killing Great Jaggis.

@StrixVaria Before you know it, they'll be a walk in the park.

I've dumped ~30 hours into it already. In less than a week. That's sort of scary.

I made some much better armor and haven't fought a Great Jaggi since then, so I'm kind of looking forward to that.

My current self-given mission is to find the materials to upgrade my bone axe.

@StrixVaria One small point: Don't try to fight Qurupeco with Jaggi armor; you will lose. Hard.

Is there a reliable way to get armor spheres?

@StrixVaria You can mine them from nodes in the Tundra and up.

I don't think I have access to that yet.

@StrixVaria No, that's a 4-star area.

@fbueckert I think you can mine them before that.

Until then, you're at the mercy of the reward table.

@Wipqozn Eh? Oh, I think the Flooded Forest allows you to mine them, too.

I finished all the 1-star quests (unless more become available later), so after I upgrade my axe I'll start on the 2-star ones.

@StrixVaria What do you need to upgrade your axe?

@fbueckert Carpenter bugs and earth crystals.

I have enough Malachite ore already.

@StrixVaria Earth crystals are easy.

@StrixVaria Sandy plains is the best place to get both of those.

You'll have fun with Carpenterbugs, though.

@Wipqozn I figured this since I've spent almost no time in that area yet.

@Wipqozn Fun fact: Area 1 of the Sandy Plains has a 38% chance of carpenterbugs from one of the nodes.

@fbueckert Yup, but it doesn't always appear. Which is annoying.

Every other area (Tundra or Deserted Island), has roughly the same chance.

I'm not a huge fan of constantly losing health in the desert.

Those stupid bugs are super rare.

I needed 3 carpenterbugs for my ludroth armor. I managed to get them all in one trip to the plains. I got two on the first node, and then cha cha had one waiting for me when I returned to the village.

At least you get a few cool drinks for free in the box.

That's why you get them.

It only applies to certain areas in the desert. If you're just mining for resources you shouldn't need to use it. Just stick to the non-hot areas.

@Wipqozn Areas 8, 9, and 10 only, I think.

@Wipqozn Yeah, there were a few zones in the whatever Woods that I tended to avoid because they had face-sucking leeches.

I'll avoid areas in the sandy plains similarly.

I didn't know what to do with it so I rolled and it broke.

@StrixVaria Unless you're in a mission where you have to deliver them, they're useless.

It goes faster when either everyone's delivering one to make it faster, or escorting the transports.

Because getting hit makes you drop them.

@StrixVaria There is a 5-star quests which requires you to do so in volcano. Without the proper armor carrying them makes you lose health.

To say the least I have no intention of ever doing that mission. I did it once in Tri. never again.

They added in some more monsters, and the online port is new.

And it's in HD.

They also added in a lot more weapons of each type, and additional armours as well. They also added back in G-Rank.

@Wipqozn I barely made it into High-Rank in Tri; fought Jhen Moran so many times, but since it wasn't my quest, I got no credit for it.

@fbueckert Yeah, exactly. I had someone before, but he got bored of the game before high rank and stopped.

@Wipqozn I didn't even have that. Except @TrentHawkins. Who tended to rage at the game, so didn't play it that far.

@StrixVaria FYI: There are three "tiers" to your escapades, each with their own level of monsters. Low rank, High rank, and G rank.

The monsters get harder, you get special ones (like Jade Barroth, or the Sand Barioth), and the items you carve are specific to your new rank, so you can continue upgrading your weapons.

And they get a whole new set of armor.

Even the items you harvest differ. It's like a New Game+ mode, kinda deal.

It sounds like it's going to be hard to "finish" this game.

@StrixVaria The village quests will only take you so far. You can complete the "online" quests solo, but that's what you'll have to do if you want to advance in the ranks.

The online port is accessible without a network connection.

It's there for playing with the 3DS version, but you can use it to play the online quests solo, if you feel like it.

That is new to the game; if you wanted to do the high rank quests in Tri, you HAD to be online, period.

@fbueckert The stuff you're doing now, all the farming etc., is that "online"?

In the Moga Village.

Which is sort of the "story" mode.

I guess I'll see what you're talking about as I play the game more.

They made it seem like there was another village to go to, but I haven't tried that out.

You need to advance the story there to upgrade your farm and fishing fleet.

@fbueckert I don't have class tomorrow, so I could play until 12 my time. Although I usually try to head off a bit earlier than that.

Although, I drove off Lagi with minimal damage.

Absolutely murdered him without much of a problem.

Today's probably the only day I have time to team up; tomorrow I have tango practice, Wednesday is salsa class, and Thursday I'm probably headed home to the family.

@fbueckert The urgent quest against him isn't that bad. He's a real pain in the flooded forest one, though.

@Wipqozn There's too much water in the forest; less chance of him being on the ground.

Which is where the fight is nice and simple.

I have to capture something or other for one of the 2-star quests.

It sounds like a huge pain in the ass so I've been putting it off.

Should be possible, especially as the urgent mission, as he's still damaged from the fight where you drove him off.

@StrixVaria Capturing is usually easier than killing. You just weaken the monster, trap them, then throw some tranq bombs at them.

@Wipqozn "Just" "trap them" is where I miss the "easy" part.

@StrixVaria You'll be given a shock trap at the start of the quest. once he's limping. just place it on the ground and lure the monster into it. They won't be able to move for a bit, during which time you just toss two tranq bombs at him (Which you also get at the start of the quest).

If it's attacking you, it looks normal.

You can make a shock trap with thunderbug + trap tool. You can find the bugs, but you need to buy the trap tool

All I need is one more RAthian webbing and I can make a new bowgun. A couple spikes from Barioth and I can make the barioth bowgun.

I need to get the Djinn SNS. The Rathalos one. It looks so awesome.

I need 3 more rathalos shells and a flame sac to make it. Perhaps I'll go do a couple runs of him now.

@fbueckert It's a fun battle.

Man, I beat the heck out of Rathalos. Broke all his parts, and I never let him finish eating. In the end I didn't even give him the mercy of an honourable death in battle. I just trapped him. poor guy.

@Wipqozn Ah, well. Shrug, move on, next Rathalos.

I still need one more shell from him though, and a flame sac.

I'll probably aim to get the sac from Rathian. Slightly higher drop chance.

Either way it looks likeI actually needed to carve him. oh well. Doesn't matter. Got money.

It'll be worth it, too. That Djinn SNS looks so sexy.

A long term goal is to have one of every element of my chosen weapons.

On the bright side, if I have too much trouble getting a flame sac I can just carve it from scratch without. Just more expensive, and requires more scales.

@fbueckert I'm doing the same for everything except hunting horn.

For hunting horn I'm more concerned with the songs.
