Q: Why can't I equip the "Hunter's Vest"?

Q: What are "slots" in items?

Every equippable item in the game seems to have "slots". There are 3 symbols, and the ones I have seen so far are a circle or a dash. It looks like a circle is an open "slot" and a dash is the non-existence of a slot, but I can't be sure. What are these "slots" for?

@StrixVaria: Don't worry, we've all crafted the wrong armor type before. It doesn't help that the game doesn't explain the fact there are different types until it's already too late.

Can you not farm carpenter bugs?

@StrixVaria No. You normally can't farm items that are only used in crafting weapons and armor.

@StrixVaria You need a honey box. It will become a villagers request after you've completed a specific quest (can't recall which one).

I have 1/2 required earth crystals and 1/2 required carpenter bugs to upgrade my axe.

After 2 trips to the sandy plains specifically to look for those things.

I got about 15 whetstones, though.

So there's that.

And finding them is a pain in the ass.

I think everywhere, except that one area in the Sandy Plains, has about a ~12% chance of finding one.

I beat Gigginox last night. Damn, that thing is horrifying.

Can you cut off the Great Jaggi's tail?

I've never managed to do that.

The only difficulty I still have with the fight is predicting when it'll do its stupid tail sweep.

Ok I'll just stick to pummeling the main body then, since that's more reliable to hit.

The first tail you can cut off is...Royal Ludroth's, I think.

You can break the frill around his head, though. And that gives you a decent chance of getting a King's Frill.

Which is needed for some of the Jaggi equipment.

The tail swipe can usually be predicted by him crouching and setting himself a little.

He always does it clockwise, too. If you attack his right side, just turn with him.

I can't decide whether I hate those cats who steal things or the worms who eat your face more.

I always try to avoid them both.

@StrixVaria Tricks you learn as you play.

Done right, you can even roll under the tail swipe.

That takes split second timing, though.

@StrixVaria Another little trick: if you're running from a monster, you'll notice that your stamina drains faster.

Dodging while running results in you jumping into the air for a bit. You're invulnerable during this "dodge".

Useful for anyone just starting out. Might still be helpful to you @StrixVaria, not sure.

@badp Fighting a giant monster yesterday, I realized that the spaces aren't that small; they're really large. You just run across them pretty quickly.

Easily seen when we were fighting Lagi. I was maybe a quarter of the map away (still within easy charge distance), and it was hard to see @Wipqozn.

The leviathan still looked pretty big, though. Easy to see him.

I should go hunt myself a few Barioths. Get an Ice weapon, then fight Diablos.

He's fairly weak to Thunder and WAter too, actually.

@badp They certainly look it. When you scale against monster size, though, they look a lot larger.

Most of the time, you're not paying much attention to map size, though; the monster is taking all of your attention.

I was fighting Volvidon, at the Volcano, and I landed a hit on him that sent him flying into the lava.

He bashed against a wall and everything. It was awesome,.

Got myself some Volvidon armor. Although now I need to do some farming for lagombi parts and killer beetles. I'm planning to slot it with Evasion gems to give it Evasion +2. I plan to do the same with the Blademaster Barioth armor when I get it.

@Wipqozn I haven't really slotted my armor all that much.

So far, there's not enough slots to enhance current skills, not with +1 gems.

I do gem to lower penalties below the threshold, though.

New DLC quests are up

The Dark Demon's Sword (No HR Requirement) - Hunt three different large monsters (Great Baggi, Gigginox, Barioth) in the Tundra in order to craft a new Longsword. These monsters are counted as low rank, and drop materials as such, however being a multiple (3) monster quest, upon death these monsters only carve into Mega Potions. Upon quest completion you are given the usual materials given by the monsters in the quest, as well as a reward unique to this quest - The Shadow Blade. This extra material is used along with 5 Isisium mined from Low/High Rank Tundra, as well as 5 Amber Tusks obtain…
