12:31 AM
@PeterGrace Nice place.

psssh.... 111 8th is for suckers!! @PeterGrace

Yeah, Google is there.

I know... And a load of my old trading systems...

Sucker!
All my shit is in Phoenix NAP, One Wilshire, and EC2. I have the feeling I need to spread out a bit more.

@MichaelHampton I'm wondering what'll happen to One Wilshire when the big one hits

12:40 AM
@JoelESalas It'll fall into the ocean, and I'll restore my offsite backups somewhere else.
Any good data centers in... Montana?

@JoelESalas is going to colocate with me in Chicago
@MichaelHampton you too, if you want

1:35 AM
@MichaelHampton find a data center in detroit!

@MattBear Buy a house for $1, get FIOS run to it, install some racks and a split-system aircon
Tada! Detroits premiere datacenter!

actually, if I was going to build a datacenter, I would look at detroit...
cheap buildings, low cost of living,
city would probably give you a building because your bringing money and jobs in
buy some surrounding houses, renovate, sell them to the employees cheap...
if I could get some investors....

It would have to be a big DC to be worth that much investment

100 houses, $100

Like I said, for a DC to have 100 employees it would need to be a big one
Reckon there's enough demand for a DC in Detroit?

1:40 AM
cloud provider, its not local demand
remove a lot of the overhead, beat godaddy and amazon on prices...

I think im on to something!

So you'll need a buttload of Supermicro servers :p

yuuuuup
biggest expense would be the private army to protect the compound

Hah
Anyone know of any alternatives for a chassis like this: travla.com/product_d.php?id=0000000082
Dual ITX + a bunch of hotswap drive bays

1:42 AM
thats pretty cool...

I have some very very limited space and want one of the ITX for PFSense and the other side for some sort of storage (maybe Nexenta)
Low powered Atom or Via for the PFSense and an i3 or i5 for the storage

@MarkHenderson dell C series
3-4 nodes per 2u. Shares power and cooling

@MDMarra Very expensive, and overkill on both processing power and electrical power

1:53 AM
@MDMarra Starting at $6389.00 (USD mind you), it's also about 4-6x the cost of what I'm looking at

Less crying, more cloud

And PFSense doesn't need to be dual socket :P
not when it only has a 100Mb uplink

2:17 AM
I just got a call from the eBay seller of my LSI server.

Go on.

"Dude, by the time we come in to buy equipment, the IT guy is long gone... Fired, laid-off, whatever. This office was closed and we were commissioned to come in and clean out the space: computers, furniture, etc."
"We acquired all of this the week before you bought it... So you got lucky"

@ewwhite Do they have anything else they're liquidating at a bargain?

I'm in the market for a ficus.

computers don't come by often... mostly DNA sequencers... and monkey cages.

2:21 AM
Are the cages empty?

possibly...

I remember the old days of eBay was to bid at the last possible moment. Is that still a thing worth doing?

i do

Does anyone have a good Nagios method for checking that a Windows host has a particular value for a specific registry key?

2:39 AM
@Zoredache I don't know Nagios, but can it execute shell scripts and compare their stdout?

Yeah, I can run any arbitrary command.

reg query /?

The tricky part is that my nagios host is a Linux box, and I can't put any plugins on the boxes i want to examine the registry of.

@ScottPack Bidnapper!

Here be dragons if you're comparing the same key on x86 and x64 though, as chances are the keys will be in different locations

2:41 AM
@WesleyDavid Weslooper!

@Zoredache Does nagios have an agent that installs on the monitored boxes?
Or is that what you can't install?

That is what I cannot install. There are a few different agents, that could be installed.

There's this wicked good website called Server Fault - they can probably help

Q: How to view and edit windows registry from a remote linux machine?

JoeOn the windows-linux interoperability front we have Samba for file/print sharing (SMB/CIFS), rdesktop for terminal services (RDP). Is there any linux tool available that will allow you to view and edit the registry of a remote windows machine (ie. not a dual-boot situation where your trying to h...

Mostly I monitor the box with wmi, but as far as I can tell you can't retrieve a particular registry value via wmi

The short answer is to install a whole suite of API calls so you can copy a few kb binary from a Windows machine :P

2:44 AM
@MarkHenderson Nah, those guys on ServerFault are assholes. Have you tried DaniWeb?

@WesleyDavid Yeah I like it cos its got a girls name in the URL which makes me think that a hot strawberry blonde is writing tutorials for me

@WesleyDavid What about Quora?
Didn't someone in here claim to be college roommates with Dani, or some such?

@ScottPack I went to college with Dani of Daniweb
@MarkHenderson She's a brunette, sorry to disappoint :)

@voretaq7 I knew it had to be one of you people.

Is that the one with the weekend radio show that makes me so angry I have to turn it off?

2:52 AM
@jscott No, that's StackOverflow.

zing!

WHY IS HE TALKING ABOUT THE ISRAELI ARMY AGAIN?!?
JUST SHUT UP AND LET PEOPLE WITH CONTENT TALK!!

evenin' gents. Having a rough night?

@ScottPack hush, let me tell you 15 ways to kill a man with your thumb...

@ScottPack Are you feeling OK?

2:57 AM
@jscott You've never listened to it have you?
@voretaq7 And then never do.

@voretaq7 I'd prefer to hear 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.

@Adrian My personal fav is to drop them off at the airport for a month long trip home and never talk to them again.

@ScottPack And move. And change your phone #.

@Adrian That sounds hard.

@ScottPack Push them into a prop. Not mine please, I don't want to have to tear my engine down. :)

2:59 AM
@ScottPack Sometimes you just gotta. Especially when they're that extra special kind of crazy.

@ScottPack Not as hard as you will be when you finally work up the courage to talk to that girl you eye off on the bus every day

The stabby-stabby kind, in particular.

@ScottPack Assuming you mean the SO podcast, no I've not heard it. I was talking about the "tech" woman radio talk show.

@jscott Ah, I don't know that one. I think the SO podcast would be 95% better without Joel to constantly derail it.
All this use of the word "hard" is beginning to feel uncomfortable.

3:00 AM
So I take that it we've finally decided to come to our collective senses and stop inappropriately used the 'Off-Topic' close reason?

@ScottPack hard to stop once you start...

@voretaq7 Just like Pringles.

@Adrian it's been quote-unquote policy that product/service recommendations are more "not constructive" than "off topic" - the legacy autocomment message about them being off-topic network wide notwithstanding

So then shopping questions aren't OT any more?

@ScottPack it's hard to start eating those
@jscott "not constructive" describes them better

3:01 AM
I really miss the S&M close reason.

Fair enough.

though I may be making a meta post pleading for sanity on "shopping" closure

@voretaq7 Yes, that's what I've been saying for awhile. I seemed to be in a significant minority though.

because we really are hitting some good questions with that elephant gun

For instance, this has some potential, IMHO: serverfault.com/review/close/50032

3:03 AM
OK assbutts - how is this off-topic?

Q: Solaris 11 nsswitch.conf messed up, need to edit it from an alternate kernel

JoeOk, so I was editing the name-service/switch service and messed up my nsswitch.conf, I overwrote the "passwd = files" with "passwd = filesasdf" so now I can't auth to the server when I boot that kernel. I can however just boot to the default Solaris 11/11 kernel and auth again just fine the probl...

@voretaq7 Exactly.

@voretaq7 I think you mean "assbutt".
Unless some plebes have been flagging it.

@voretaq7 Is this a trick question?

That Q had an initial OT VTC on it.
I get really tired of 'OT because it might work better somewhere else' bullshit.

@ScottPack no, you're all assbutts, and I assume someone in here did it because BLAME
:-)
@jscott no, it's a "why the fresh hell was this in the close queue?" question :)

3:05 AM
@voretaq7 And here I go out of my way to treat you with care and respect.
@voretaq7 Doucheyacht.

Didn't they implement something like "vote auditing"? Do they seed the VTC queue with ringers and measure reviewer's actions?

@ScottPack By god you're right - I'm a class 3 yacht! ::motors around::
yeah but they're drawn from the main pool of VTC questions unless that changed

@jscott Indeed. Sometimes I'll see something that doesn't make any sense, open it in a new tab, and see that it doesn't actually have any close votes on it.

A: Solaris 11 nsswitch.conf messed up, need to edit it from an alternate kernel

voretaq7I can however just boot to the default Solaris 11/11 kernel and auth again just fine ... so boot to that kernel and undo the damage you did to /etc/nsswitch.conf. Problem solved. This will cost you five dollars, Charlie Brown. If your system is hosed to the point where you can't log in boot i...

too mean?
@ScottPack this one has (1) close votes :-/

@voretaq7 That one does, yes.

3:14 AM
@voretaq7 Dude, the last part of your answer to that question makes no sense.

@Adrian Solaris single-user mode always auths against /etc/passwd & /etc/shadow regardless of the contents of nsswitch.conf
Or were you talking about the charlie brown comment

@voretaq7 You need to buy a comma and put it in there in the appropriate spot.
I can sell you one cheap.

No commas are necessary if you click through and read the formatted version.
Please do not abuse commas. Every time you comma-splice an English teacher fillets a live kitten with a chainsaw.
(though if you want to add a "just" to it I won't object)

@WesleyDavid Who you calling a roostersicle?

3:25 AM
Is there a word to describe fictitious parts/components of a system which are the cause of a perceived problem?

@ChrisS Garthok? Magic Smoke? Server Elves?

@voretaq7 Chicken chatterer?

@ChrisS Sounds like a vaguely familiar idiom exists
@voretaq7 Are you saying I have fowl breath?

@WesleyDavid maybe. Did you catch the canary yet?

You people aren't making any sense.

3:26 AM
@voretaq7 Um, yeah, those are examples... I'm looking for a classification word

@ScottPack I don't have to make sense, I'm the sysadmin!

@voretaq7 Doesn't that mean she's pregnant?

@ChrisS Broken widgets?

It doesn't have to be an actual problem.... Nor a technical problem
For example: the Helsinki Smash Rod... The part in everyone's car that makes it rattle after a few thousand miles.

@ChrisS I'm not sure what kind of word you're looking for then - the most general one I could think of would be "gremlins"
@ChrisS Oh, that's just Franz's contribution to the design.

3:28 AM
I'd like to buy a noun....

beltbuckle

One that classifies these words, not another example of them.

(all german products are designed by a pair of engineers, Hans - the one who creates the elegant parts of the design, and Franz - the one who is responsible for "Replace Headlight procedure: Remove and install Hood")

@voretaq7 I see you've repaired a Volvo.

@ScottPack BMW

3:30 AM
The only car I've had that required me to remove the front left tire in order to change the oil.
@voretaq7 Equally terrible.

The fog lights on my dad's car, not kidding you the owners manual tells you to remove the bumper to install new bulbs. No directions for that procedure.

the procedure actually says "Remove and Install Hood". I have the service manual at my parent's house. I kept it after I lost the car because of that page.

Granted, I bought that thing at 196k miles and felt like it was still in the break-in period.

@ChrisS Hitting a stationary object usually works.

Oh, for anyone who's been thinking about getting a Raspberry Pi for a movie player device: wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Raspbmc <-- This works, and even the most mildly technical user could figure it out.

3:32 AM
2.
any cause of trouble, difficulties, etc.
(also sounds like "user" to me but what do I know?)

@voretaq7 No, "gremlin" is the cause of the problem... The category that "gremlin", "helsinki smash rod", "magic smoke" and all those go into.... looking for that name.

@ChrisS Did your volvo have K-Jet fuel injection?

Can it play 1080p?

@voretaq7 That was a Pontiac with the half-legendary 3.8L engine.
@MarkHenderson Yes, though it has to be one of a few formats... x264/MPEG4 is one of them

@ChrisS "I'm not sure such a word exists
that was supposed to be for @ScottPack
@ChrisS Pontiacs never had K-Jet injection

3:35 AM
@voretaq7 Not that I'm aware of, no.

"adjust fuel distributor by taking a hammer and awl. Place the awl on the nut at the top of the fuel distributor and tap gently until pressure fixes itself"

@voretaq7 I don't think so, though I can't say for sure. Never dealt with the fuel system. It was an '87 740 Turbo.
@voretaq7 Seriously.

@ScottPack yup.

@voretaq7 That's...insane. Even for a German.

that one isn't in the manual, because technically the fuel distributor is not field adjustable
but it's also a $3000 part (no I'm not kidding)
whacking the thing (GENTLY) usually got the metering mechanism to re-align itself properly
whacking the thing (NOT gently) would cause it to seize forever.
once seized you could repair it with a blowtorch, molyslip, and infinite patience

3:38 AM
Well, that auction went over my limit. Time to shut the lid, pour another glass, and read some before bed.
Gentlemen.
@voretaq7.

@ScottPack thrash lizard tail

@voretaq7 I'm not that lonely yet.

@ScottPack but @WesleyDavid is.
and remember: Lizards have TWO

@voretaq7 Unashamedly so.

3:44 AM
@ScottPack the cat will be pleased.

4:03 AM
So, I want to get back into electronics and am looking at Arduino starter kit, but I'm put off by the fact that it's labelled "Age 10 and up"
Am I really that retarded?

@MarkHenderson How's the hunt for an Australian bride for me going?

@WesleyDavid Well since my cousin came out as a duckfacer, I kind of gave up because honestly, all the hot girls I know are american
Thanks to the fact that my work is right next to a mega-church called Hillsong, which is where all the Americans go to when they come here

@MarkHenderson Huh, I know of that church. Interesting.

Oh, there's my wife's best friend, but she's a bit high maintenance. But she is 6'2" as well, half lebanese, and has an ass to die for

@MarkHenderson O_O
@MarkHenderson High maintenance? I'm skerred already, considering my dealings with a few Lebanese.

4:08 AM
@WesleyDavid She's a professional makeup artist, which might give you some insight into her personality

@MarkHenderson At least she'll know how to put on makeup. I can't decide on if I like girls that don't wear any, or glamazons.

@WesleyDavid I'm not a fan of makeup
I've only seen my wife in makeup two or three times since I met her

@MarkHenderson Dangerous claws.

4:27 AM
@WesleyDavid If I were single, it'd be a risk worth taking
How do you feel about asians? There's a hot asian girl who works in the office next door who just broke up with her boyfriend
She drives a Mitsubishi Evo X
But let's be honest, if you were after an asian girl you can also find them in America

4:48 AM
@MarkHenderson I like girls.

@WesleyDavid "he is not particular as to race. Or species."

5:02 AM
@WesleyDavid Careful with that. I read a story about a guy who's in jail for a very long time for liking girls too.

@HopelessN00b Won't somebody PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!? --- OH GOD NOT LIKE THAT YOU PERVERTS!

@voretaq7 Typical woman. Do exactly what she says, and still end up as the bad guy somehow.

@WesleyDavid Well i guess that narrows it down, thanks

@MarkHenderson By about half, right? Now you know not to set him up with the asian chick's ex.

@HopelessN00b Exactly

5:09 AM
@MarkHenderson grrrrrrllzzzzzzz drools

5:29 AM
@michaelhampton ty

I try and I try to leave Wordpress behind, but my friends keep pulling me back in. sobs
I like it from a user perspective as a CMS, but wish I knew more about its guts for when I'm forced to peek under the hood.
I have a feeling if I got really deep into it, it could be both fascinating and lucrative.

@WesleyDavid It's well designed more or less

@JoelESalas It doesn't seem like the complete travesty that Joomla is.
Wow when I had to manage a Joomla site for a little over a year, that thing was straight up whack to figure out.

@WesleyDavid Joomla is a war crime compared to Wordpress

@JoelESalas Goose stepping baby-stompers, is what they are.

5:52 AM
Interesting fact: If you search for 'lube' across the .SE network chat rooms, you get 138 hits. 104 of them are in The Comms Room. (139/105 now)

@MikeyB Why were you searching for lube on StackExchange anyway?
Need that 55 gallon drum of it?

@WesleyDavid Yep!

6:13 AM
lube-a-doodle-doo!!

I would like to go back in time and prevent the creation of "fakeRAID". I've spent all day doing something that would have been a 30 minute job otherwise.

@MarkHenderson Do you actually know any ugly people?
Besides me.

7:04 AM
@WesleyDavid He's Australian. I don't think they have any ugly people down there. National law or something.
The ugly people get deported to New Zealand, to hook up with the abundant herds of sheep, or something like that.

7:25 AM
@WesleyDavid Sure, but by the time you hit 30 and are desperate you basically wear beer googles all the time
And I don't think I've ever seen your photo so don't be so hard on yourself
(I might have seen one once, but I'm terrible with faces)
And actually now that I mention it, the only ugly people I know are related to me

I'm pretty confident that UK is still at the top of the ugly list, so no worries..
in other news: A swedish cleaning lady stole a train, and have crashed into a house

7:56 AM
@pauska I can't deal with this right now

1 hour later…
Dan
9:04 AM
@pauska Harsh, bro :(

@pauska The UK average fares a lot better if you take out the outliers like me.

Yeah I can't see HMV coming back
maybe as someone else's brand for an online store

Dan
Shame really, but I'm the very consumer who is to blame

I used to love looking in record stores like that but these days, I can look in several stores at once online, and play previews of all the songs I want without having to bother anyone behind a counter, etc.
It's kinda like woolworths - the world changed around them

Dan
The other thing is that, generally speaking, I really don't enjoy going to town

9:17 AM
I'm surprised they lasted this long, to be honest.

yup

Dan
I'm very half and half on the decline of the high street
On one hand, I can understand what makes people sad and my home town is a waste of space, now. On the other hand, 'high streets' have been evolving constantly for many many years and we're just progressing. Ultimately, unless I want to buy myself something nice, I have far better things to do than go to my local town center on a Saturday

well i don't like seeing empty shops myself but equally, shops need to evolve or die. Comet got killed off because they ended up being a showroom for amazon's white goods sales

Dan
@RobM I do feel for them and I hope we end up with a reasonable compromise

Q: Windows 8 and Web Server

GregHas anyone else noticed this very, very odd quirk with Windows 8. Essentially, when certain people go to a domain it provides an Error 10060 or Error 404404? I've found these things tend to fix it; but it does arise again sometimes: Installing Windows 8 Critical Updates Allowing the domain th...

Was that question really that bad?

I'm surprised it was HMV. Comet went under and I expect PC World/Currys might go the same way.
I had a major conversation on Facebook a couple of weeks ago with someone who works for Dixons (remember them? Online-only now, apparently) and PC World only survive because 9/10 people are happy to go their and buy their overpriced stuff, while the last one will go online. If everybody went online they'd go under quick.
I mean, £20 for a 2m belkin network cable? GTFO.

9:26 AM
@Dan but it's nearly true!.. We vikings stole all the pretty girls

Dan
@pauska Can't argue with that too much, you do have a sexy girl abundance. At least if the internet is to be believed

@JoelESalas oh, forgot to say that nobody got injured except the cleaning lady

@tombull89 Like B&Q PC World is convenient for most people who don't know better

@tombull89 There's still a profit to be made in exploting people's (understandable) ignorance. There wasn't enough of it around with white goods, but computers are still confusing enough that people will go to a shop to talk to an ahem 'expert'

@Dan I might sound like a jerk right now, but every time I try to imagine what a british girl looks like I get this picture of a girl with teeth sticking out everywhere.. like someone just opened up their mouth and got their teeth thrown in
I understand that not everyone looks like that.. but it does seem a bit more occuring than other western countries

Dan
9:28 AM
@pauska Have you ever been to Britain :D

@Dan nay!

like every country we have our good and our bad

maybe my mom wathced a bit too much of east enders when I was a kid

Granted, there's some munters about, but we've got some good 'uns too.

@pauska All countries have them. It's just that the Uk is the only place you're likely to find them out on the street on a friday night bellowing at policemen and throwing up; so they stand out more.

9:29 AM
@tombull89 oh I know. Cheryl Cole. Grrrrr.

Dan
@pauska Yeah, I don't think it's quite that bad. We certainly do have a good proportion of ugly folk, but it's not like there's no nice girls

I think the eastenders cast were all specifically chosen to look like their faces lost an argument with a bag of anvils

@SmallClanger I think you're on to something

@pauska why aye man

it kind of makes sense now.. you see alot of hooligans.. they're not exactly from the model academy either

9:30 AM
yep

Dan
@pauska Yeah, that is the shit side of our culture

We do have a monopoly on shouty, drunk ugly; I'll grant you.

so in other countries the ugly/trashy ones stay at home.. except from a certain shore in US.. and so on

Speaking of girls, Katie Price has got married again. Her previous husband liked to wear makeup, this one can help her put it on - he's a plasterer.

and she's a nightmare

Dan
9:34 AM
Like or loathe her (I'm the latter, mostly) she's a business genius and nowhere as dumb as the character she portrays
She is mental though

The Kardashians, however...

true enough, "jordan" is an act, a character she plays

@tombull89
http://starsmedia.ign.com/stars/image/object/143/14339174/garek_star-trek_pictureboxart_160w.jpg
Odd. I thought onebox opened images as long as they were on their own line.

Dan
@RobM Managed to swap my boots thank fuck :D

good news then @dan

Dan
9:45 AM
@RobM They're still tight as hell but I'm hoping they'll wear. I've never had brand new boots before, always just borrowed somebody elses when riding 125's

ah, all good boots need to be broken in, I think.

Dan
Yeah, they should give a little. Obviously being, essentially, safety boots they're rather rigid to say the least
They look the part though

that they do

Dan
Sorry, I'm dead excited - something I've been meaning to do for near enough 10 years :D

@Dan wut?

Dan
9:59 AM
@pauska Get my motorbike license and get a motorbike

How do you handle a Windows Forms application that has to be installed on a server but requires to be run inside a user session?

Dan
@OliverSalzburg Log on remotely and set it going?

@Dan I was hoping for an automatic approach that looks somewhat organized :P
Like, this is supposed to be the server-side of a client-server application
But the developers didn't seem to like the concept of services :\

Dan
@OliverSalzburg Don't think you're going to win that easily unless someone has a novel solution
The form bit definitely has to run?

@Dan I actually haven't looked too deep into the application itself yet. It automatically installs a shortcut in every users Autorun to start the server application.
Which then opens a logging window that tells me what the server is doing.

Dan
10:04 AM
@OliverSalzburg Sounds like that's just the interface - are you sure there's not a service behind?

I was hoping it would be possible to construct a dedicated user account that automatically logs on and executes the application
@Dan Yeah, I checked. It's the same .exe I have to punch a hole in the firewall for.

Dan
@OliverSalzburg You could probably do that - I've never tried it on a server OS

It's a VM purely dedicated to this application. So I wouldn't feel too dirty doing it :P

Dan
http://serverfault.com/a/441268/95832

Try those

@OliverSalzburg This isn't quickbooks by any chance, is it?

10:07 AM
@Dan Awesome. Thanks
@SmallClanger DHL EasyLog

Ah, sounds much the same behaviour as quickbooks. Their multi-user offering relies and starting some horrible user-space program on a file server, which drops a file into the location of the main DB that is seen by the clients so they know to switch to multi-user mode when they try to open something.

Dan
@SmallClanger Splendid

The upshot of which is that it doesn't work unless every user has full write/delete access to the filesystem with the DB in it.

@SmallClanger I've seen some strange applications at this client. Some rely purely on SMB shared drives for their client-server communication...
I've also never seen people suffer from such a severe case of drive letter shortage...

They've actually run out?

10:13 AM
@SmallClanger On some machines, yeah. One of our goals was to remedy that

@OliverSalzburg C4 at all the load-bearing membranes. It's the only way to be sure.

10:30 AM
@Dan ah.. always wanted to do that

Dan
@pauska Yeah, I love bikes.
@pauska I bet you have some amazing roads over ther

yeah tons of motorbike tourists in norway in the summer
