7:00 PM
@NickM. No, but googling it now. Thanks.

fucking meeting AGAIN
brb

@Zoredache Ah, the lesser known thought experiment - Schrodinger's DNS lookup.

@jscott that seems to require a os X host.. which means I'd have to buy an iMac or mac mini.. my plan is to get the apple TV, which is might cheaper :)

@pauska We run the AirServer on a Windows box and stream the iPad/iPhones to it.
The Windows machines have projectors attached, so the teachers may display their iPad stuff for the whole classroom.

why does it only list OS X?

7:03 PM
PC or Mac

oh
huh, weird

Apparently some of my co-workers are much more dedicated to keeping things running than I am
The things I do to keep our computers and networks running for the students @calstate Sonoma. #ohgodthesmell http://t.co/IPbIk7kX

@pauska I can accept SilverLight in certain circumstances. Flash is just weird, and Adobe reader.

@HopelessN00b - you made me laugh on that IIS question man.

@Zoredache A plutonium bell on my collar?

7:15 PM
There was a mainline sewer clog on campus that flooded the science building basement with sewage. The basement is where the CS computer labs are.

@TheCleaner Yeah, I wasn't sure how else to answer that. At least, how else to answer that without ripping the little twit a new one.

Anyone here used/experienced these? vaddio.com/index.php
they have some pretty nifty USB gear for videoconferencing

Nothing says fun like poop in your raised floors.

I might have asked this before...since shopping questions are taboo...anyone have recommendations on hosted corporate video that can actually be locked down? Youtube and vimeo seem to be out. Need the ability to require a login to the site first. I really don't feel like building up my own either.

7:17 PM
@WesleyDavid shit...

Sewage line?

@ewwhite Alright, they're serious. Not quite a sure thing, as they're also considering Dell, largely because of the fucking we're taking on our HP pricing, but we're using our current supplier because "that's a good price for everything that we get in one of those servers."

"Alert: Underfloor water detector tripped"?

Ping me back for my email addy and s'more details.

can anyone here please explain to me what the fuck this is:

7:18 PM
@WesleyDavid Someone didn't install a check in their sewer line. =P

Q: "sched: RT throttling activated" KVM host - what does this mean?

Tom GeeeUbuntu 12.04 64bit - under a KVM parent. 32 cores. So we seem to be having some load issues. We have noticed this line in kern.log: "kernel: sched: RT throttling activated" What does this mean? Is the KVM parent throttling the host? This is on a single parent - single child KVM parent/host.

@TheCleaner So a site that allows access control to video... hmm... How about longtailvideo.com/bits-on-the-run

(look at the comments)

@TheCleaner Well, wait, pixels on the run is just a video hosting platform. I don't know of a hosted system that will do the access control for you. Or maybe pixels on the run does now... I dunno.

@pauska Oh lol

7:20 PM
@TheCleaner Anyway, it's fairly easy to just make membership site with a CMS like Wordpress and hook it up to LDAP / AD
Then embed the videos using pixels on the run or something
Standby, I've got a list of video hosting platforms that I researched for a project once...

@pauska That is someone who doesn't know what the hell he's doing. The giveaway is the VPS with 32 cores. :)

@HopelessN00b But the BENEFITS

Ack, nevermind. It's a list of video players, not hosted services.

You must be thinking about "32 friends with."

But this isn't 32 friends with benefits, this is one dumbass VPS running 32 cores, with no benefits.

@HopelessN00b Dedicated VPS? I don't what even

7:23 PM
@pauska That is an idiot who doesn't know uname -a, doesn't know what apps he's running, and doesn't know how to Google.

@pauska It's fairly common these days to have a virtual machine running on the full resources of a physical box.

@WesleyDavid It entirely defeats the point of virtualization

@WesleyDavid ..
You are joking?

@JoelESalas We will disagree.
@pauska Nope, you get the benefits of bare metal snapshots, migration, and the other abstraction concepts that virtualization introduces, and the nearly-full-power of the physical host.

@pauska No, it is pretty common. Much like DevOPS, whether it's a good idea or not is an entirely different question than how prevalent it is.

7:25 PM
@WesleyDavid I was thinking Francium, since it has a very short half-life.

@pauska LiquidWeb "StormServers" do that I think, so does the MediaTemple "Nitro", etc.

@pauska my brain is still stuttering on that one too.... "Dedicate VPS"

hey @pauska - your link to the video equipment reminded me of a company I almost went to work for that makes some really cool stuff! www (dot) tacticalelectronics [dot] com/ (didn't want their link posted here in case I do someday...lol)

@WesleyDavid Migration? So people are basically buying double hardware, and have one idle for HA migration?

what is DevOPS, i keep seeing it thrown around a lot

7:26 PM
@Patrick If you don't run production systems on your boss's laptop, you don't know shit about devops

@pauska Well, it's hosted, so the end user/client doesn't even have to buy double hardware.

@Patrick 1/2 Operator (old word for System Admin) 1/2 Developer, Full suck.

@pauska Well, no, I doubt they're buying a second machine, but they get all the potential benefits of the virtualization platform which include but are not limited to live migration.

Thanks @WesleyDavid

7:27 PM
I...need a nap

@Patrick Development On Production Systems. Basically mashing the coding and the sysadministrations together.

@HopelessN00b aaah now I get it

@Patrick It's a concept that's old, but been repackaged into modern terms. It means that operators also know development and also includes continuous integration of live applications pushed from development systems. Look up "the three ways"

@pauska @HopelessN00b that's not really what it stands for, unfortunately it's how a lot of inexperienced shops are trying to implement it.

@Patrick If you want to see DevOps done right, and not the trendy BS that lots of third year CS students think is devops, read up on John Allspaw.

7:28 PM
@WesleyDavid well, judging on the questions that 32 vcpu guy has posted, not everything is rosy and nice

@voretaq7 Right. But that's really what it is in the vast majority of places these days, which accounts for why there's so much suck associated with it.

interesting

@pauska Yeah, I think the host isn't set up for peak performance. I'd like to know who his provider is.
@Patrick Tap the up arrow to immediately edit what you've just written.

@WesleyDavid but why is his guest VM running a realtime kernel?

@pauska Because he likes pain?

7:30 PM
@WesleyDavid ah, i didn't see the edit, thank you.

@Patrick Oh, another good person to read up on that might be considered "devops" and read some of their works is Theo Schlossnagle of OmntiTI. Also Ben Rockwood who works at Joyent and has his blog "CuddleTech"

The main "problem" with the concept of DevOps is that System Administrator's #1 priority is the usability of the system they maintain. This is why we kick "high availability" and "redundancy" around a lot.
The #1 priority of a Developer is to create new functionality.
These aren't the same.... so one person can't do both completely...
You will find people who say that these aren't intrinsically disparate. This is true in an ideal world. Let me know when you find that ideal world, I want to move there.

Actually, anyone that works at Joyent, if they have a blog, needs to be paid attention to.

@WesleyDavid Those guys are geniuses... it's a shame they don't have more time to mentor others.

@Patrick And yet another DevOps person that I believe is legit: Gene Kim

7:33 PM
that devops borat is funny

@Patrick If it's not, you might be working at a DevOPS shop.

@WesleyDavid I was just watching a youtube with Theo in it last night. Good stuff. youtube.com/watch?v=ieCTIPG43no

It's just that the term "DevOps" is bastardized to now mean any Ruby developer that also has to deploy servers, so they use puppet for all the things and think they're the bomb.

@ChrisS s/usability/stability/
I don't care if it's a pain in the ass to use as long as it functions correctly, consistently.

@WesleyDavid thebomb.com
@voretaq7 See: bacula

7:34 PM
@voretaq7 Well turning the whole system off would leave it in a stable state.

@ChrisS a consistent state, but not a correct state :)

@voretaq7 Usable doesn't imply convenient or comfort.

@ChrisS and really after the test load users have proven it works we don't need to keep it running :-)

@ChrisS True system stability is achieved by turning off the users, not the systems.

@ChrisS no, but "usability" is a developer word. It's why they keep adding those stupid features that make things break...

7:36 PM
lol test load

Instructions to become a DevOp:
1. Drink case of RedBull
2. Read Wikipedia page on Puppet.
3. MANIFESTPACKAGEPOTATOGEMDEPLOY
4. Get a Linode instance or three.
5. Side-scaling Facebook App!
6. Bought by Google.
7. Private island.

@voretaq7 A little more of a window into the minds of developers than I care for - the fact that "usability" to a developer involves breaking shit.

@voretaq7 Just because Developers can't be bothered to understand User Experience doesn't mean they can coopt any word they like.

@Cole THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE!

@voretaq7 I'll give you a test load

7:36 PM
@ChrisS developers understand user experience - they do their damndest to optimize their torture devices.
(hence: Vista.)

This heartburn is atrocious

@Cole Remember to tie a red bandana on it if it extends more than 5 feet from the tailgate.

I think at times we try to be a dev ops shop, sometimes i really want to kick the devs out of the servers.

@Cole Break out the calcium carbonate!

/dies

7:37 PM
We have our own devop who's pretty badass: @ITHedgeHog

@Patrick proper devops doesn't require the developers to log in to production systems.
@ChrisS stop eating my chalk dammit!

@voretaq7 Hey, it works....

@ChrisS fine, at least stop eating the colored chalk? It's NOT grape flavored!

I thought you guys made a bid to remove SF as a migrate target for SO. Did that get reverted?
1
Q: Can I use a powershell script to install db/website when the database is separated from the webserver?

KitFoxMy boss is on vacation and I'm supposed to have this installation script done by the time he returns. Unfortunately, I've realized that the script I developed won't work on the target server setup and I don't know enough about it to know how to figure it out. The server is running SQL Server 200...

@jscott mod

7:42 PM
@jscott Mods can still migrate, users can not

@ChrisS @voretaq7 go chew his ass off, please..

Ah, I see. Well, best of luck to the OP, I hope they're able to get their work done before Dad comes home.

@pauska who am I supposed to beat?

While it's mildly OT, it's really not all that bad.

meh, I'd say that's on-topic honestly

7:45 PM
>I don't even know how to start.
:(

he's been given a system administration task (write an automated install script)

grr, fine.

and he's asking to be pointed in the direction of making it happen
@jscott to be fair, I don't either. But I'm not a Windows guy

Dan
Argh, help me. First 6 miles in weeks, I may well die sat right here. And its literally freezing out,too

@Dan On bike, moto or running?

7:47 PM
@Dan WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?

Trying to convert an IDE drive to SCSI in VMware. Blue screen after I make the changes, GAH

(Exercise SUCKS. Sysadmins should be fat and pasty!)
@Cole Windows does not LIKE having its hard drive type changed! WINDOWS SMASH!

@voretaq7 I've done it before without issue ughh

Dan
@jscott running

@Dan My apologies. ;)

Dan
7:50 PM
@voretaq7 Exercise is for idiots

@Cole WINDOWS SMASH

Dan
So, is it me or is the big Facebook announcement shit

@Cole from IDE to SCSI? I doubt that..
@Dan what is the big facebook announcement

@voretaq7 Yeah, but work shouldn't get in the way of getting your dick wet, so... there's that to consider.

@pauska yeah you edit the vmdk file
I'm not the only one: jjclements.co.uk/2010/06/08/…

Dan
7:52 PM
They've made a 'search engine' which customises the results based on your and your friends Facebook profile

@Cole I'm not saying vmware doesnt support it.. Windows doesn't

@Cole Yeah, you got lucky. Sometimes it works. Usually, you get a BSOD, and have to die a little inside as you rebuild a Win 2k server fresh as a VM.

@HopelessN00b this time, not so lucky -_-

@HopelessN00b yes, everyone should shower daily... oh you meant sex? I'd forgotten all about that.
(seriously can't remember the last time I got laid... but my lizard loves me)

@HopelessN00b agreed, hence I have a booty called lined up for tonight.

7:54 PM
Oh @WesleyDavid:

@voretaq7 exercise could help you with that

(I was trying to get a better picture but he decided he'd had enough of this "being held" thing and was making his way up my arm)
@pauska People worth sleeping with could help me with that too.

Dan
right, steak time. Laters

or I could just have no standards

@voretaq7 exercise ususally helps to attract the people worth sleeping with
:-)

7:57 PM
@voretaq7 Exercise is marginally preferable to the no standards approach, trust me. Among other reasons, you're less likely to catch herpes from jogging.
And speaking of jogging, herpes, and other fates worse than death, anyone ever seen this with BES?
>Account For Which Logon Failed:
> Security ID: NULL SID
> Account Name: BESAdmin

Ok this is a serious issue I have with agile processes
"The process does not care about the tool."
What the fuck? since when? In a platonic ideal of agile of course there's no such thing as a "tool" but we live out here with rally and JIRA and Zendesk because we're not perfect

It's getting locked out, so I look, and... NULL SID... ?????

@voretaq7 Wow, he's a lot bigger than I thought. Purdy.

LOPSA membership expired
Not going to renew that

@Cole Talk to @MattSimmons - He's got ideas.

8:01 PM
@WesleyDavid on actually making it worth it
I feel like I spent the whatever it was to buy it to be on a mailing list.

@Cole Yes. I can't talk too much about it, but @MattSimmons is afoot. You two should talk.

@Cole Windows records what driver it needs to use on the boot device and BSOD 0x7B if it changes. You can lobotomize the registry however and Windows will search for a driver when it doesn't find one... Official MS directions to lobotomize

@Cole Can't forget the pretty membership card with your photo on it!

@WesleyDavid never got that
@ChrisS meh, I just gave up. I'm not hacking this thing to shit.

@Cole BURN THEM TO THE GROUND WITH THEIR FAMILIES!!!

8:05 PM
@pauska True, but I'm 6'2 and 190lbs, while I could stand to lose about 5lbs I don't think lack of exercise is the reason I'm having trouble attracting a mate
(now if there were something I could do to repel the ones I don't want...)

@voretaq7 Let's see a muscle pose.

Have you tried eHarmony?

@voretaq7 Herpes and an explosive, violent temper should do a good job of repelling unwanted mates.

@ChrisS lol eHarmony

@HopelessN00b As well as all other mates

8:07 PM
@ChrisS So 2002.

@WesleyDavid So anti-gay, actually.

@JoelESalas Well, he didn't specify a preference for that in the RFP. :p

@WesleyDavid yeah I don't want to date a troll, thanks.

@Cole iLOL'd.

8:09 PM
@WesleyDavid wait. what?

okay, let's have a look For The Lols.
Manchester, Lancashire, GB Approx. 8.41 mi from Bristol I can assure you, it's not.

For The Trolls @tombull89

@WesleyDavid um... no? Creepy ass cathead...
3

Goooood afternoon ladies.

8:11 PM
@voretaq7 I don't think he is really asking how to write the script. I suspect his database, and web servers are in different firewall zones, and he doesn't have access from one to the other. So trying to write a script is difficult/impossible.

Q: Resetting administrator password on Windows server 2008 R2 over Raid

KMillerI have locked both my administrator accounts out on my Windows Server 2008 R2 that has Raid. I tried the following- "Insert the original Windows Server 2008 installation DVD Reset the computer, boot from DVD Choose option “Repair your computer” Start command prompt C:\ CD C:\Windows\System...

@HopelessN00b I'm Italian, the explosive violent temper is a given.

I thought the local admin account never got locked out permanently? Can't he just reboot to safe mode and get in and then reset his "personal" admin account?

@Zoredache at the very least it will probably require opening some firewall holes

@voretaq7 Creepy ass-cathead.

8:14 PM
@WesleyDavid assbutt :-)

@WesleyDavid LOL
I don't like the sound of an ass-car.
I don't like the sound or idea of anything near my ass. So, an ass-car seems very unpleasant.

I SHARE:
everyone should visit his profile because of awesomeness.

@voretaq7 Pretty rad, not gonna lie

yeah - it seems to be broken in Safari, but it's pretty awesome anyway :)

so I'm learning that SSD drives with TRIM are basically non-recoverable if they die? True?

8:26 PM
@voretaq7 what does it do in safari? There isn't a good reason why it should break...

@voretaq7 I just broke it on chrome

@Zoredache It runs, but you can't move any rings

It sorta works in FF... 17 moves to the "win" as the screen only updates half the time and I clicked something that shouldn't have been moved.

@ewwhite you around?

@voretaq7 Does Safari block cookies? Or do you have your security locked down?

8:27 PM
Oh, I see what he did there. Nice little hack.

@Zoredache not particularly locked down

@TheCleaner Drives are basically non-recoverable if they die. At least by mere mortals.

@MichaelHampton @TheCleaner SSD drives especially so

The new imacs are so thin :O

And that's why we have things like RAID, ZFS and most especially backups.

8:29 PM
@mossy when you remove the optical drive... :P

haha true.

@voretaq7 Civil war's over, grandpa. Optical needs to die

@TheCleaner If the guy keeps locking out the default administrator account, what are the odds he actually knows the password, or has another admin account set up on that server, you think?

@JoelESalas then how do I make archive immutable copies of data?

@voretaq7 LTO WORM.

8:32 PM
@HopelessN00b - agreed...I just found the question silly overall.

@HopelessN00b TAPE SUCKS!

@voretaq7 Chisel and stone, then. :p

@voretaq7 immutable data is a myth. Give me a sufficiently powerful laser, and I'll mute that data.

@MichaelHampton - true, but at least with magnetic drives there is a chance. Seems that SSD drives are not so. This is for a friend's personal computer. We use RAID/backups here.

@voretaq7 Tape sucks more than DVD?
Not a chance

8:33 PM
@voretaq7 But if tape sucks (as it does), why would you prefer to back shit up to 100 optical disks instead? :p

@TheCleaner Even home computers should have backups.

Crashplan is free, and a nice tool if you are backing up to local storage, or to a friend.

@MDMarra When you're only cutting about 500MB to an archive? Yes.

@voretaq7 I'd use magneto-spins in any backup scenario I could

the cost of the LTO drive, media, and storage space can't be justified when a DVD holds more than enough data for the archive and I can fit 20 of them on a shelf.
@JoelESalas If I could make them immutable (absent obvious damage/tampering) I'd consider that too - drives are cheap.
we've also thought about switching to flash or CF cards and tamper-sealing the containers.

8:36 PM
Is it enough to just build a checksum, and gpg sign that. So you know if tampering happens?

@voretaq7 LTO1

@Zoredache If it's SHA3, sure. I'd consider that pretty much tamper proof for the next decade.

@MichaelHampton - oh I agree...lol...my friend is stupid.

@MDMarra ...where can you get such things today?
(and media is still spendy)

@voretaq7 the dumpster

8:40 PM
@TheCleaner I've had SSDs die one of two ways: 1. Total and complete death (typical) 2. Sectors randomly come back all 0s (old age drives).

@MDMarra mmhmm, my DVD burning machine is under warranty, and manufacturer supported :-)

@voretaq7 If you want an immutable copy, just dump something to an iso or other comparable container and cloud it

and my DVDs are um... $0.12 each
@MDMarra . . . what if it rains?!

ya but the stigma of being old school is beyond price
:)
@voretaq7 cloud it twice

@MDMarra now you're just inviting a tornado!

8:43 PM
then your dvds are going to get sucked up

I've got HP LTO2, Quantum DLT, and two AIT drives at home... I only use the DLT drive right now. Found the LTO2 drive at the recycler for $20 and couldn't let that go.

better hide them in a bomb shelter

Tornado's don't have much power over a fire-proof (2h) safe in a below-grade basement. Though I might not be around to care either.

Oh god, 2 weeks from today - I will no longer have boobs at this time of the day.

I'll be laying on a beech in Mexico trying not to pass-out from too many beers...
Or possibly parasailing, snorkling, zip-lining....

8:47 PM
Hello, Any MS sql server expert there?
I need some help

What the Q?

I have to decide which SQL server 2012 version suits me

Ok. Requirements?

Basically i am a c# developer , but i have to import export data from Oracle , DB2 this time

@ChrisS When/Where are you going? I'll be in Akumal (30 mins south of PDC) in a few weeks.

8:49 PM
I have browsed that link but still confused :)

@ChrisS Oh, 2 weeks.

@EEAA Puerto Vallarta

@ChrisS Nice - that's where we've gone for the past 4 years, but are switching coasts this year for variety. :)

@Tanveer microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/editions.aspx - has a comparison chart 1/2 way down and shows you the exact differences

@MDMarra yes

8:50 PM
I went to Cancun two years ago... I'll not make that mistake again. =]

@HopelessN00b Wassup?

Sunrise is gorgeous on that side though...

@ChrisS Oh, heck no. Hate that place. Unfortunately we'll be flying in there, but then taking a ~90min van south to Akumal, which should hopefully be much quieter and generally less drunk and nasty than CUN.

@Tanveer Express Edition fits the bill so far. I'm thinking you don't have much experience with SQL. You should probably start with Express and if you run into a specific limitation reevaluate your strategy at that time.

yes i don't have much experience

8:52 PM
@ChrisS express is seriously crippled though. For small scale yeah it's definitely fine but you should list the caveats

@EEAA The noise is really what got me... Blaring music outdoors until 5am and none of the windows/doors on anything have any sort of seal.

Like 1GB RAM consumption max, 1 core max, etc

Express edition has good data import / export options from other DBs

@MDMarra We're a reseller.... He hasn't said anything that would make me think he's going to run into those limitations yet.
@Tanveer You need the DB itself to pull data from another DBMS?

He said he needs to move data between DB2 and Oracle so I assumed there was a decent amount of data there

8:53 PM
@ChrisS Yah, agreed. Well, have a good time. :)

I will. You as well!

I suppose that there might be options like data transfer wizard where i can select source and destination and then data will be moved automatically
this is just my supposition , i don't know either such options are available or not
if such wizard is available in any version , then it will be perfect for me
@ChrisS @MDMarra such option is available in any version?

The Data Transfer Wizard is a one-time deal, run from a management computer usually. If you need the DB itself to pull/push data to another system then you'd be looking at SSIS.

I will do it manually

@mdmarra?

9:01 PM
I'm still going to stick with my recommendation of installing Express (along with SSMS) and playing with it until you run into specific limitations. It's free and should be a relatively easy way to tell what the base services are capable of.

@ewwhite Talked to the bosses and they were all about getting a cheaper price on that HP server. There's a meeting set up with a Dell rep on Monday (mainly because of price, I believe), but other than that, if you can quote out that stupid build for what you thought, they'll go with you over our current supplier on the next order of those towers.

Speaking of SQL Server. Have any of you had experience using AWS RDS SQL Server?

nope; I don't AWS at all... We get Azure instances free/discounted. Mix that with an industry that doesn't like "cloud" and we're pretty exclusively in-house

Infact i am working in a Govt org. and they have to raise fund for buying the sql server, if i missed this chance then i have to wait alot for complete process

@ChrisS I use RDS MySQL instances, and have good luck, but now we're going to start using some 3rd-party software that requires SQL Server. <sad face>

9:05 PM
thats why i was so touchy about selecting the version, at least i should buy the version that have better options

@HopelessN00b k.

@Tanveer You really should find a reseller that you can discuss the project with... You probably can't mention enough detail on a public forum like this to get a good idea of what you need.

@ChrisS you have given me good suggessions , thanks for your cooperation

lol

9:14 PM
It's your awesome? your own person awesome?
Sweet. Sign me up.

Also, we over in Muskegon wave at ya @ChrisS

@Cole My awesome

\o

@JoelESalas lolz

Holy crap - I think we've got enough Michiganders in here to take over the place!

9:16 PM
@ewwhite you said something about a tues deadline at valley. Just seeing if you needed anything

Q: Windows 2003 Near Freezing

Kaveh ShahbazianProblem: Our server becomes very very slow (near freezing) if I copy a file from any directory on C: and D: to any other directory. In short It becomes very slow if I touch the hard disk. Currently I have turned Oracle off (It's not our main database) and things are working but very unstable and ...

@HopelessN00b The system operates better at lower temperatures! :P

^^Someone hit that guy's disk/array configuration with a huge dose of WTH.^^

@MDMarra yessum
@HopelessN00b sent you information

@voretaq7 Yeah, read that guy's disk/array config and what he's doing on it, and tell me it doesn't make you wanna hit someone with a truck.

Q: Inconsistent connectivity to DB server

chhenningI have a problem with my company's LAN and/or DB Server configuration. For periods of time like 5 - 10 mins I cannot connect to certain DB servers. This happens a couple of times a day ( like 2 - 3 times ). It's pretty disruptive to my work and I tried to get the IT department to fix it. But I ha...

Thoughts? (AFA if it belongs here)

@ewwhite I have a phone interview in 5 but let's talk after

@Cole "Talk to your network administrator"

Sadly - this question is off-topic. You're not in the IT department, so anything we tell you to try/test/change, you can't do and aren't in a position to fix. If the IT department is not responding well to you, first make sure that you're presenting a repeatable test case - get your ducks in a row. Then, if they're still not responsive, get your boss to talk to their boss - it's called escalation. — mfinni 1 min ago

A: How should I schedule phone interviews while employed?

ewwhiteI would schedule for evenings or after hours. Employers understand this and in my field, they're usually willing to make evenings available for phone screens. I always tell people to avoid using mobile phones, but if there's no other option, take the call offsite in a quiet area. I've gone as f...

Work from home today. Thanks for your concern :)

@ewwhite I see it, outstanding. I'll hit you up in a few hours - heading home, then workout, then food, then I'll circle back to this. I'm gonna take another whack at the let's-go-with-a-sane-server-build discussion on my way out too, so hopefully the build specs will even improve a bit before I shoot them off to you.
Thanks a bunch.

I am so tired of battling with EMC support right now...

what's a lightweight software I can use to take a peak into SQL server?

@NickM. Telnet =]

@NickM. If by peak you mean peek, then I suggest sqlcmd
Powershell also has SQL Server modules
Useful if you want to navigate through the SQL infrastructure like it was a filesystem
Otherwise SQL Server Management Studio seems to work for everyone else

So vCenter Server and vCenter Orchestrator are considered part of the vSphere 5 suite, but vCenter AppSpeed isn't. Dangit VMware, and I thought Microsoft's product naming and grouping was confusing.

I don't even know what appspeed is.

@WesleyDavid VMWare's suite has gotten so complicated lately, especially since v5
It used to be:

- ESX
- ESXi
- vCenter
easy

@MarkHenderson It was never just those

Now it's just ESXi, but then you have orchestrator, SSI, vsphere management, vsphere web interface, blah blah
@JoelESalas Yeah but thats all you needed to get shit going

vCloud... vSaaS, vDBaaS, vMaaS, vAAS

Our v4 to v5 upgrade almost made me say "fuck this shit" and nuke the entire vSphere and start from scratch

The new VMware product naming scheme. Simple:

@MarkHenderson Wipe and reload. It's the only way to make sure you've overpaid VMware.

Geez, I swear iPhone chargers are an enigma. We have a dozen iDevices in this office, but I can only find 2 chargers. It's the same story at home, we have 3 iPhones, 2 iPads and 3 classic iPods but do you thnik I can find more than one charger?
@WesleyDavid Eh i struggled through it in the end and got there, but I hated vSphere that day

@MarkHenderson We have USB->30-pin cables around everywhere, so I find it's typically easier to find a USB port...

@MarkHenderson They go the same place as socks in the wash.

9:52 PM
@EEAA Can't find the cables either

@MarkHenderson Oh, well that's a problem. :)

@EEAA The cables tend to basically live connected to the chargers

It says something about our current (and near future) weather that I read the title of this Q as being temperature-related:

Q: Windows 2003 Near Freezing

Kaveh ShahbazianProblem: Our server becomes very very slow (near freezing) if I copy a file from any directory on C: and D: to any other directory. In short It becomes very slow if I touch the hard disk. Currently I have turned Oracle off (It's not our main database) and things are working but very unstable and ...

By the end of this weekend, we'll have -25F lows, and sub-zero highs. Lovely.
