me. my judgement is final

user19161
Is that saying heard in your locations?

It's not something I recognise

user19161
Why the OT vote?

maybe someone doesn't know that punctuation is on topic?
maybe they just don't like the question

user19161
Actually, it's not so much know but think. Whether a question is on topic or not really depends not on the imperfect FAQ but the opinion of the community.

user19161
6:05 PM
Reading the FAQ does not give a crystal clear demarcation of the boundaries which are also subject to change.

My keyboard doesn't have the other kind of quotation.

user19161
You might need to use shift or alt or ctrl, I don't know.

user19161
I never really bothered to find out about them.

I don't think it's that important. There are more important things in life, like the color of Jasper's avatar which is blurry.

I don't have the other type on my keyboard either

user19161
6:08 PM
@gigili May I ask if you really have a son like Meysam said?

@jasperloy: You may.

user19161
@Gigili It is produced by typing "blue" into the colour selector.

user19161
@Gigili Do you really have a son?

@JasperLoy No.

user19161
@Gigili Ah OK. Maybe Gigli Bigli the character he calls you has a son, maybe that's the reason.

Q: Does the fragment "almost impossible to underestimate" make this sentence illogical?

Régis RouxI was interested in the following sentence which appeared in an article titled “In Rossellini’s War Movies, the Naturalism Survives" by Dave Kehr in The New York Times (January 22, 2010). It’s almost impossible to underestimate the importance of these movies, both for the impact that their ...

user19161
2 of the 3 answers do not describe what is linked in sufficient detail. Fanciful terms are used when the meaning can be explained clearly in a few simple words. That's what I hate.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 a swing dancing move?

0
A: How to use the verb "plug in"

EmreI hate it when people say that. What happened to good old "substitute"?

How is that answering the question?

user19161
Hey @gig, remember you asked me when my birthday was? See my total chat rep now? That gives you the answer.

you weren't born in 1970!
you need 11 more points

user19161
6:22 PM
@MattЭллен Is that what it says? Doesn't it read 23.8k?

23.8k is what I see.

@Gigili Good morning? I thought it's late night already

@JasperLoy oh, I thought you mean the real total :D 23770

@JasperLoy August 23rd?

user19161
@cornbreadninja Yes. No secret. A number of birthdays are embedded in this chat.

6:24 PM
@Meysamرهادربند I wouldn't call it late, but yes. What's your point?

@JasperLoy 0_0
8/8 here

@Gigili I wouldn't call it late either. No point in there.

@Cerberus yeah I saw that yesterday. Perfectly legal yet despicable.

points at everyone

user19161
@cornbreadninja That makes you two years my senior, shh...

6:25 PM
@Meysamرهادربند Also, I dislike the Persian part of your name as much as I dislike tea.

@JasperLoy I'm not quite the age I said I was earlier

user19161
@cornbreadninja OK, how many should I subtract from the number you posted then?

@Gigili How much do you dislike tea?

@JasperLoy one, until two months from today :)

user19161
@cornbreadninja OK, so that makes you one year my senior!

6:27 PM
@JasperLoy get off my lawn! :D

@JasperLoy I will throw a big party here for your next birthday

user19161
@cornbreadninja Only Robusto says that, though some others have lawns too.

user19161
@Meysamرهادربند Thanks. In the mean time, I will continue to work on my two wishes. Now those are secret!

@JasperLoy my life would be simplified by lawn ownership. I tire of sharing walls. I get to mow mother's lawn, however. -_-

@Meysamرهادربند On a scale of 1-10, 9.90.

user19161
6:30 PM
@Meysamرهادربند I like tea very much. It is my favourite drink after water.

user19161
@Gigili That means you dislike tea very much?

@Gigili Do you dislike the meaning of the Persian part? or only the characters?

@JasperLoy Even more than the Persian characters of Meysam's display name.
@Meysamرهادربند Both.

user19161
Also, I am still looking for the answer as to why watch ads always show the date 23. Anyone who knows please enlighten me.

user19161
In fact, they also usually show the time 10.10.

user19161
6:33 PM
@Gigili That makes us enemies.

@Reg: What is this about?

@JasperLoy analogue hands are pleasantly splayed at 10:10. 8:20 might work too, but I think quadrants I and II are preferable.

Oh...that was just a test video I pasted.

6:35 PM
you've been making videos of cats?

What if it was a non-pet?

Same difference.

@Gigili Ok I will remove them then.

@MattЭллен No, a video of people who have mounted a cat skin on a mini helicopter.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Where? In the quiz?

6:35 PM
@Cerberus oh, that! yeah that's cool

Cool ≠ despicable?

user19161
@MattЭллен Not cool but evil.

@Cerberus yeah :D
the cat was dead already

I believe we have talked about it here before.

user19161
Animals deserve respect too. QED.

6:36 PM
so, no harm
@Cerberus yeah, I think that's where I first saw it

user19161
I think we should kill animals humanely only for food or if they are pests and also not make fun of them in any way.

@MattЭллен OK that makes a difference. But Dutch artist Tinkebell says she actually skinned her own cat and mounted it on a remote-controlled toy car.

@Cerberus yeah, that is creepy weird and wrong

@JasperLoy I will tell ya. The universe is trying to tell you something.

If that is really true, which I doubt, it is sick.
OK.

6:37 PM
skinned it alive?

No she didn't say that.

user19161
@MattЭллен If so, she had better watch her karma.

if it's dead, then I can't see the problem

But it was implied that she killed it herself.
I don't believe it, though.

that's not right. pets are friends

user19161
6:38 PM
So it's OK to skin non-friends?

I think she just went to a shelter or vet where they put sick cats to sleep and asked for a corpse.

@JasperLoy so long as it's not someone else's friend

But that's not what reports in the press said.

She also made a cat into a hand bag.

Q: Usage of "read"

TatranIs it correct to use the word "read" in these sentences? If not, what would be more appropriate word to use instead? The status-bar now reads: Click to run the currently highlighted cell. The tool-tip reads: Click to run the currently highlighted cell.

user19161
Well, my stance on animal treatment has been immortalised in this transcript!

Both answers miss the point.
A pity.
I've linked to Kosmo's excellent explanation instead.

@MattЭллен that might fall under disrespect for the dead, though most humans may feel that that only applies to humans.

This is the so-called middle construction. And yes, perfectly grammatical. — RegDwight ΒВBẞ8 1 min ago
Go upvote Kosmo.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 a thousand pardons.

6:40 PM
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 How so? They look OK to me?

user19161
There was once Kosmo gave a very long answer which I felt did not answer the question while my short answer did.

@Cerberus because he's asking about the middle construction. Neither of the answers so much as identifies it as such.

That's just a label.

user19161
Well, his answer got severely upvoted and mine sunk into obscurity, sad panda.

The first answer describes it correctly.

6:41 PM
@Cerberus all I'm saying, go read Kosmo's answer, then read those two again.

I looked at it, and I have read it in the past.

And I gotta run again! Football.

Bye!

@cornbreadninja once something is dead, how is it disrespectful to use it as a helicopter?
6
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 CU!
I never thought of Reg as sporty

Ugh, now I have the same Javascript reloading problem, but with a different site (Youtute).

user19161
6:43 PM
@MattЭллен What if it is a human? It is just an opinion.

@Cerberus yes, but it's not like they apply a different label to it. They just say, "it's okay". Well I can answer a great many questions that way. Doesn't mean I should.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Don't you see the disadvantage of Kosmo's approach?

This site should be fleshing things out a bit. Saying why something is correct. After all, the OP ain't asking for no reason.

There are two ways to analyse the phenomenon. One creates a new, added theoretical framework (like Kosmo's). The other just says that certain words can have different meanings or predicate frames.
And in the end the two ways are not much different anyway.
@Skull: Yes, the famous site Youtute.

user19161
@Cerberus Is there such a site?

6:46 PM
Sure, but I'd take a site all about theoretical frameworks any time over a site where random people just say "it's okay".
Because there are literally millions of such sites already.
I thought we were creating something special.
2

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 But the framework may be a bit top-heavy, and in comes Occam's Razor.

user19161
I trust a site where people say "OK" more than one where people say "okay".

@Cerberus no, in comes "teach the man fishing" vs "tell him 'it's okay'".

I haven't made up my mind yet, but I am a bit sceptical.

@JasperLoy that's why I said something. once something (an animal's body) can no longer perform it's function (being alive) then why not put it to another good use?

6:48 PM
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I doubt whether way 2 is more educational than way 1. Except that the first answer is admittedly a bit brief.

Anyway! Anthems! I'm outta here!

Bye!

user19161
@MattЭллен We can do that, but there is no need to. Maybe our opinions don't diverge as much then.

user19161
Why are there so many removed things today?

user19161
People are getting paranoid.

6:49 PM
All right, so all I have to do is locate the v=.*& part and add that after the ?.
@JasperLoy No, I was just testing.
I am making a userscript that makes it so that I can always inline Youtube videos here, even if they have the stupid "feature=embedded" stuff.

Q: Can someone please explain this Dalai-Lama joke to me?

RoboShopI'm not sure if this question is on topic (maybe it just needs to be rephrased), but since this made global headlines due to the Dalai Lama not being able to understand it, I figure most non-native speakers would have trouble getting the joke too. This is the joke on YouTube. The Dalai Lama ...

user19161
This was just bumped again.

The Dalai Lama walks into a pizza restaurant and orders one with all the toppings, so the pizza chef makes a pizza for him with all the toppings on. The Dalai Lama eats it, pays and leaves.
I don't get it
oh, is it because the Dalai Lama is a vegetarian?

@MattЭллен Exactly. Put yourself into the Dalai Lama's shoes.

user19161
@Mitch In or into?

7:02 PM
I'm off to bed, good night.

user19161
@Gigili Good night.

@JasperLoy either?

user19161
@Mitch Hmm OK. I have only heard in.

A horse walks into a bar. The barman says "why the long face?" The horse stares at the barman. One of the bar staff clumsily drops a glass, spooking the horse. In its confusion trying to escape it destroys several chairs and a table, and injures a few customers. Eventually the horse is calmed by a local horse rider and taken out of the building. After the incident the barman puts in a cattle grid to prevent more horses from entering.

There's room for performance errrs.

7:05 PM
hmmm. i'm not sure I'm cut out for stand up.

@MattЭллен That's not funny. You are being horse-discriminationist by making ajoke where there are prevented from entering a bar.

bbl.
@Mitch horse discrimination needs to be a source of humour otherwise we'll never get past it and allow horses the equality they deserve!
really bbl

user19161
@cornbreadninja Good observation. I have not seen 8.20 though.

Hello!

user19161
@Mahnax Booya!

7:08 PM
@JasperLoy Ehh?

user19161
@Mahnax I thought I would use a variation today.

@JasperLoy Oh, OK. If you say so.
How is everyone?

Q: Is the phrase "make the grade" correctly used in this context?

Régis RouxI was interested in the following sentence which appeared in an article titled “How My Child Skipped the State Tests" by Robert Kulesz in The New York Times, School Book, (May 9, 2012). To be fair, I’m sure she felt she acted in the best interest of her school, given Mayor Michael R. Bloo...

user19161
I just answered this. OP has checked dictionary but has doubts.

user19161
I hope no idiot comes to downvote me for that.

7:10 PM
@JasperLoy Harsh.
When did you become less passive?

user19161
@Mahnax I guess I see too many things downvoted that should not be, and vice versa.

@JasperLoy Aww.
Such is life.

user19161
@Mahnax Says Yoda.

@JasperLoy Indeed. Do, or do not, there is no try.

user19161
@Mahnax That is actually BS.

7:16 PM
@JasperLoy Not in the context in which it was issued.

user19161
@Mahnax OK. But it certainly does not apply to all situations.

@JasperLoy Does anything?

user19161
@Mahnax Yes. 1+1=2.

@JasperLoy 'xactly.
howdy @Mahnax

I got it to work!! At last.

7:18 PM
this just in: new xacto blades are quite sharp >_<

user19161
@cornbreadninja What are they?

@JasperLoy a brand of hobby knife. I stabbed my finger with a pointy razor blade. :x

user19161
@cornbreadninja Oh no!

@JasperLoy indeed. It has been bandaged, and I got back on the carve-a-stamp-out-of-a-pink-eraser horse

@JasperLoy I'm voting that no one votes for this answer.
@cornbreadninja that's a mighty small horse.

7:28 PM
@Mitch giggles
I bleed in the name of typography.

People always say carve away from yourself exactly at the moment they're carving a horse stamp in a rubber eraser with the blade angled directly toward important fingers n the other hand.

@Mitch it was a lowercase 'k', k? :D
and yes, yes they do. -_-

-xact-ly

english.stackexchange.com/q/70421/18399 I don't see what middle construction has to do with OP's question.

I don't know exactly but something like...
"The status-bar now reads" is not exactly a passive (that would be "the status bar is read by you"
and not exactly active either (the status bar is not doing the reading).
That's my take on why Reg made the link.

7:51 PM
@Mitch my statement was poorly worded -- I thought OP was asking simply whether reads is acceptable (as opposed to says for instance), not questioning its place or label in the society of all things grammatical.

@Cerberus yay! programming works!

@MattЭллен Indeedy!

user19161
@Cerberus Wow, you love to add y to words, first it was linky, now it is indeedy.

Never heard this one before either?

user19161
8:07 PM
Nope, I guess you are lovely like that.

user19161
I have voted to delete the Dalai Lama, please cast your votes if you want to.

user19161
It needs 9 more votes to be deleted.

user19161
127 upvotes is RI-DI-CU-LOUS.

@JasperLoy That question was around a long time, isn't it enough that it is closed? why bother deleting it?

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You are right. Just trying to put the privileges to good use!

8:17 PM
@JasperLoy Is that a variant of the politician's fallacy? "Something can be done, therefore I must do it?"

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Now you are thinking too much today!

8:29 PM
time for me to go
bye

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Bye!

@cornbreadninja the asker of that other question, too, was only interested in whether it was grammatical. And yet he did get that cherry on top. Why should the OP of this new question about the same thing not get the same cherry?

mmmm cherry

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 that cherry could choke him with confusion.

Well how about we just never learn anything? That would be so much less confusing.

8:44 PM
Yes! now you're talking my language. Stupidity over cupidity!

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 that's a bit extreme.

It's the same thinking, thought to the logical end.

@MattЭллен she got the way to move me, cherry

Besides, we do not answer questions for one particular person. We answer them for the entirety of the mankind.
If someone does not understand the details, or is not interested in them, fine, he can read till "it's grammatical" and then come to a grinding halt right there.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 BTW, I misassessed Barrie's response this morning. Total brain cramp. I really have to start getting some sleep.
Seriously, I haven't slept all the way through a single night since before the operation. This is getting ridiculous.

8:48 PM
@Robusto Happens.

waves white flag :4888666

@Robusto what's holding you back? Some weirdo medication?

Plus these drugs I'm on, I just freakin' hate them. I don't see how people get addicted to this shit, because it is no fun at all.

Well neither is alcohol or cigarettes.

alcohol is fun

8:49 PM
@Matt others are funner

I mean, it's one thing to take the pain away. That's a good thing. But for the rest of it, I hate feeling so fricking dull. It's like trying to play the piano with mittens on.

@MattЭллен not if you're addicted.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 well, no, not then
@cornbreadninja other whats?

@MattЭллен never you mind. Sore point of late.

8:50 PM
@Matt meeting go well?

@cornbreadninja It was interesting. I'm going to have a look over what they want in more detail next week, and see if I'm capable. It's all hush hush, though

@MattЭллен goodness.

I know!
people are very afraid of losing intellectual property these days

@MattЭллен yeah... those who aren't all ZOMGopensource

I am somewhat ZOMGOpensource

8:55 PM
:D

I like to give my code away

Hello again.

I am twelve and what is this?

 Penthousing

discussing penthouse related issues

My internet connection kind of crapped out earlier.

8:55 PM
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I know, right? I wonder which issue is his favorite.
@MattЭллен could you say that about anything you could possibly create?

@cornbreadninja Yes. The only time I don't is when I'm contractually bound not to, or when it doesn't even nearly work.

@Matt do you make tangible things?

as in not software?
not often
I make dinner

I do that every day!

9:03 PM
How is everyone this fine eve?

I make music on occasion, but that's not tangible
I'm good, thanks @Mahnax, how are you?

@MattЭллен I'm alright.
We just had a reading comprehension test.
I hate them.

how'd you do?

Probably poorly.

I used to like reading comprehension, in French and Spanish at least

9:04 PM
I've never been good at analyzing silly bits of awful books out of context, and then answering barely meaningful questions about them.

oh, was this English lit?
I was never good at that either

Sort of.
I hate the stuff, really.

on the up side, loads of girls do English Lit at uni

I can read a full book and understand everything, but give just a clip, out of context, with no background info on the characters or setting, and then ask questions about the most minute details?
Bah.

it's tough

9:07 PM
Yep.

user19161
Is literature tough?

user19161
It's just reading comprehension.

But context!
There is very little.

user19161
You know why you may not score? I never did well for lit class.

And the questions, they are all so dumb.

user19161
9:12 PM
Because different people interpret things differently, and silly teachers mark you down for having different opinions. QED.

And 75% of the time, there are two good answers.

@MattЭллен how would you feel about someone stealing your music?

@cornbreadninja passing my stuff off as their own?

user19161
I remember I got 51 marks for lit when I was 14.

that would suck

user19161
9:14 PM
That's because the lit teacher could not fathom the depths of my thoughts.

@MattЭллен pretty much, yes... see "My Sweet Lord" v. "He's So Fine"
@JasperLoy I did rather well on the ACT's reading comprehension section at that age

user19161
Sorry @mahnax, but I feel like talking more arrogantly these days. I have shown you my heartfelt opinions.

@JasperLoy Yes, you are more arrogant in your words now.
But you seem more honest this way.

@MattЭллен see also Ray Parker Jr.'s theme for Ghostbusters v. Huey Lewis and the News' "I Want A New Drug".

user19161
@Mahnax You know why I sound like that? Because I am sick and tired of people who know nothing but think they know everything. There are many such people in this world, so now I talk like that to combat them.

9:17 PM

@JasperLoy Yes. I am sad that such people exist sometimes.
Gotta run!
Bye.

user19161
@cornbreadninja What is ACT?

@JasperLoy It is very similar to the SAT. College preparatory testing. actstudent.org/faq/answers/what.html

user19161
What is the penthouse chatroom all about?

@JasperLoy I wish I knew. I went in there to find out and came out empty-handed.

user19161
9:22 PM
@cornbreadninja I bet someone is going to delete that room soon.

@JasperLoy perhaps we can ask Meysam what it's about.

user19161
@cornbreadninja I just did!

@Vitaly haha.

user19161
@Mahnax When I was 18, I expounded on an essay regarding I cannot remember what topic. And the teacher made the sarcastic remark that I was totally off topic. She simply could not understand the depths of my thoughts.

user19161
9:26 PM
OK I am leaving the penthouse now.

user19161
The people who scored in their essays were those who wrote ten paragraphs when I could say the same thing in one. Just redundant verbosity. But the marker could not see that the paragraphs were all logically equivalent.

@cornbreadninja heh, that's quite a blatant rip off. it all turned out right in the end though!

@MattЭллен :D

user19161
@cornbreadninja You are full of smiles too!

@JasperLoy I'm breaking in my optimism.

user19161
9:35 PM
@cornbreadninja Just be more careful with the blades.

@JasperLoy I was just going to try out my eraser stamp!

user19161
Haha, the star wall has again disappeared in Chrome.

@JasperLoy the star wall narwhal strikes again.
the stamp works. huzzah.

user19161
@cornbreadninja Do you use Ubuntu? That is the only reason I would have heard of narwhal.

user19161
Every six months, I learn a new animal name.

9:45 PM
@JasperLoy I've been known to use Ubuntu, and I know what you're driving at. I can't honestly remember if I knew of narwhals prior that meme.
@JasperLoy I learned recently of the jackdaw thanks to a pangram.
This is a list of pangrams, which are sentences using every letter of the alphabet at least once. Perfect pangrams in English (26 letters) Without abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, initialisms, proper nouns or Roman numerals * Cwm fjord veg balks nth pyx quiz. user19161
@cornbreadninja I only know one: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. I also use this sentence to test what a font looks like.

@JasperLoy That was the only one I knew for some time. My favorite remains: Jelly-like above the high wire, six quaking pachyderms kept the climax of the extravaganza in a dazzling state of flux.
I must go.
TTFN!

Q: Straight quotes vs. curly quotes in formal writing

TigerheadShould I use “ or " in very formal English writing?

Why os that closed as off topic
Punctuation is totally on topic.nit that I care. But closing it as off topic seems strange.

10:00 PM
I think it got the first three votes before people even understood what the question was.
I myself went WTF the first time I saw the original title.

this smells like off topic:

Q: Making up words - considered bad grammar, or bad spelling, or what?

JohnIf someone makes up a word, is it considered bad grammar, or bad spelling, or something else? The word and phrase I have in mind is "housecolding party", but this is a general question.

NARQ as far as I'm concerned.

10:16 PM
Aww what did you say?

I could show you but I have to charge.
Actually I have to fall asleep.

What are rates at these days?

Yikes, that's a bit steep.
I don't think I can afford it.

Hey, I could charge eight anytime.

10:18 PM
I'll have to go without.
