@Simchona. I realize now the question may be a dupe, but why delete my answer to it? Even if the question itself has been closed, it's a signpost, and my answer succinctly answered it

@Affable yo.
I only saw ya in Christianity... Whats up?

@AffableGeek I didn't delete your answer
@AffableGeek Ask the moderator who did it why he did it

@AffableGeek I did. This question is merge material, but your answer woudln't fit on any of the possible merge candidates.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Was just about to ping you

If you are willing to make it fit, I'll gladly undelete and merge.
Alternatively, you can just answer any of the original questions.

I think he is afk.

Fair enough, I'm watching the Red Carpet as well.

Red Carpet?

@Reg I really don't want this to be reopened...

Q: “It took me all of ten minutes to find out” - what does “it took me” mean?

Krishna Chandra TiwariI have a little confusion on understanding the sentence: It took me all of ten minutes to find out . Why couldn't it be "I took all of ten minutes to find out"?

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), will honor the best films of 2011. @RegDwightѬſ道 It has 4 reopen votes as of now

I know. I'm not holding my breath.

@SonicTheHedgehog That defeats the purpose of saying you have only one channel if you, in fact, have 4

@Sim Does it? Oh well.

12:39 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog you said "only channel...is..."

@SonicTheHedgehog 13 * 7 - 11 + 2 * 2 = 84. So just click through your channels in this order, and you can watch the Oscars.

I tried to edit my sentence up there, and it said I only had 4 seconds left, I rushed, but I was a second too late. Now it says that I can't edit it.
@Reg ...that made no sense.
Ragequit.
@Reg perhaps maybe I can make it stream live through my computer.

@SonicTheHedgehog No, no, no, no. Let me ask you a question. When you came pulling in here, did you notice a sign out in front of this chat that said "Room in which Reg makes sense"? You know why you didn't see that sign? 'Cause it ain't there, 'cause making sense ain't my effing business, that's why!
3

@Reg Well too bad, this room is called Incomprehensible room.
Beat that.

12:44 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Umm...that completely supports what Reg just said

Yosh, streaming live!

@sim The question is, do I give a eff?
Hey, I have a question.

No, but you might consider giving an eff.

@Reg I know when to use an and a, thank you very much

@SonicTheHedgehog /f/ is consonant. /eff/ is not.

@Reg But I used eff to represent it.

So apparently you do not know it.

@Sim Quit giving reg stars.

@SonicTheHedgehog Nope.

Q: About the French Lips

chessmathHow to tell that a person has the lips to talk like the Frenches. I told a person she had the French beak, is that pejorative?

@simchona Hey sweets, you have the French beak.
Is it working, as a pick-up line?

How about: "You kiss like French?"

@Kit Is it your son's birthday yet? What date is it?

Ah, I see.
My birthday is in 6 days.

Very exciting!

Not yet? But how are they supposed to budget and order stuff?
If you were my kid, I'd probably get you a telescope.
Or maybe a microscope, but hist prep is such a pain.

@Kit *wry smile*
You do not seem to understand the situation of being an immigrant.

Oh right. You are an immigrant.
No, I don't understand that.

immigrant != Milk and Honey.

I was daydreaming. I couldn't actually give those things to my kids.
But maybe by the time they are your age, we'll be rich.

@Kit I'll pray for that.

Oh, please don't pray for such petty things.
I appreciate the thought, but I'd rather you brought world peace or fed hungry children.

How the hell did this get two upvotes? With zero downvotes and only one vote to close.

12:35 PM
@Cerberus "Infantile"? Camel-case is a hallmark of modern programming. Get with the times, thou Luddite, thou.

@Robusto It may serve a purpose in programming, but not elsewhere.
My first and only post on Sceptics just got deleted.

@Cerberus — goFuckYourselfYouLuddite

@Robusto I'm sorry, what was that? I only heard a baby crying—your typical Apple-user sound.

@Cerberus You are becoming a prematurely old and irascible man. How do you say "Get off my lawn!" in Dutch?

Suffice it to say that no camel case is involved.

12:41 PM
The signs are all there: sticks with dated technologies, resistant to change, hates everything new ... you are an old man, @Cerberus.

Just old fashioned.

Holla.

And down to earth.
Hi!
I am socially progressive, but aesthetically conservative.
And organizationally I'm somewhere in between.

@Cerberus Add "rationalizes backward-leaning views" to the mix.

@Robusto Look, you're an Apple user.
2

12:43 PM
That pretty much says it all.

I'm not going on about that, am I?
Oh, wait, I am.
Never mind, then.

@Cerberus This is relevant to what? Your rabid hatred of everything that is not Win XP?

@Robusto It means you have no right to speak about rationalizing! Next thing you're going to buy a giant nut in a white plastic case and tell me you're not a nutcase.
Cognitive dissonance galore!

@Cerberus Stop putting words in my mouth. I use a Mac and I also use Windows. Which of us is the more open-minded?

You are, you evil witch! Burn you shall!
Old things good.
New things bad.

12:47 PM
So I'm scrubbing confidential data from screenshots. Would it be snarky if I scrubbed the Dean's name from the footer?

And I see some asshole starred your "Apple user" comment. Bunch of fucking toadies, crying "Witch!" to the other Puritans.
Good-bye.

Poor Robusto can't figure out why other people might decide for themselves that Apple is stupid, overpriced Little Tikes computing.

@KitFox Haha, what, a footer in a picture?
@Robusto Aww can't you appreciate the irony?

@Cerberus It's a screenshot of the website.

@KitFox Oh, ah!
Scrub away, then!

12:50 PM
Do you think we really hurt his feelings?
I was just messing around.

@Robusto Look, everyone is ridiculing my XP all the time too. I thought that was OK here (I personally don't mind).
@KitFox I think yes. But not in a very serious way.

Oh. Like in that he wants to win kind of way?

I don't know. It is annoying if people bash your thing all the time, even if it is not a particularly sensitive subject.
Perhaps we should ease up a little on the creationism and Applism.

Where's the fun in that?

I know.
But etiquette and stuff.

12:58 PM
Etiquette? What's that?

It's labelling people.

Huh.
Well, I'm good at that.

@Cerberus At least Appleism isn't a danger to society the way creationism is.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Isn't it? Huge amounts of resources are channelled away from actually useful things, like saving babies, into extra-expensive computers and extreme advertising budgets.

And licensing.

1:05 PM
The money lands in the pockets of Apple's owners.

And lawsuits.

Yes!
So lawyers make billions too.
Anything that hogs resources without significantly benefiting society is bad.
I suppose the enjoyment people get from the feeling of owning a white plastic box is something, but that could probably be attained in a vastly more efficient way.
Okay, I'll stop now.

Hey, I like Apple. I like Macs. Except when I don't. Then I really don't.

I just don't.

And that's because you are a Luddite.

1:11 PM
@Cerberus Well, you're assuming those resources are actually available FOR saving babies.
And that Apple products and other electronic products don't also contribute to the improvement of society.
I contend that if Apple hadn't set the bar so high with the original iPhone the mobile phone market might not have reached the level it did so quickly.
And people, like doctors, are using these "toys" for work, and work benefits society.
I also think that capitalism is way more effective at achieving progress than pure socialism or communism.

@KitFox Hmm not really. I have no problem with Windows 7. I even like Linux. I just specifically dislike Apple.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I'll grant you that.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 They could have used cheaper, non-Apple toys that are just as good, and they would have had money to spare. They could buy some useful baby machine for that.

But actually, Apple subsidizes these sorts of uses.
The Mac I bought when I started college was 90% off retail.

Where did you find this magical discount?

At my college. But Apple offers educational-use discounts.
To get you hooked, I imagine.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I agree that American capitalism is better than communism as in Cuba. But I think a more moderated form, something closer to European capitalism of the 1970s (before the controls on big banks were broken) works better. // The number of people that live in real poverty in America is really not a good idea.
@KitFox All brands offer educational discounts. I can get MS programmes and computers for greatly reduced prices.

1:19 PM
You can get all of MS's dev stuff for free (thanks Dreamspark program).

@Cerberus They couldn't use cheaper toys if those toys didn't exist because Apple never made them because expensive toys are immoral and Apple is never, ever immoral

I'm not saying they don't. I just mean that it is possible that medical centers couldn't get other stuff cheaper.

@Ashen Oh, how do you qualify?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 What?

@Cerberus Current student. An *.edu email will suffice, but there's more than one way to confirm yourself. dreamspark.com

@Cerberus Sure, America's particular version of capitalism is not perfect. But consider all the advances that have been made, real advances including literacy and health and lifespan and infant mortality. These things typically happen in a fundamentally capitalist environment
@Cerberus I mean, your assertion that people shouldn't use apple products because they're too expensive is predicated on the fact that there ARE, in fact, cheaper toys that can accomplish the job. This is not always the case, especially where apple is a market leader (phones and tablets)
Yes there are tablets and phones that are competitive with apple. But they might not be suitable and/or cheaper for particular settings for a variety of reasons.

1:21 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Actually, our infant mortality is embarrassingly high.

Apple has terrible enterprise support. Don't even get me started.

So complaining that some, eg, school, is wasting money by using ipads for e-textbooks when there are dozens of cheap tablets made in china, ignores all the other considerations that go into buying an ipad, such as the availability of actual e-textbook content.

I mean they're nice things and all but if I need to manage a few hundred computers give me an AD domain with group policy over macs.

@KitFox It might be high, but it's still way better overall than it used to be and better than lots of other countries.
@Ashen yes, but that isn't my point

Oh.

1:23 PM
@Ashen This is very interesting!

I'm not trying to say Apple is the best. Personally I hate apple (the company). I'm just trying to say that for Cerb to complain that society is harmed by apple's high prices is a bit simplistic.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I thought iPads were also made in Chinese sweatshops?

@Cerberus I don't really blame them for appealing to the consumer market more than enterprise because enterprise is very, very slow to change, and any worker that would really benefit from a Mac is probably going to get one anyway but be the exception rather than the norm.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 As I said, capitalism is generally the lesser evil (just like democracy), but it needs a bit more moderation that it currently has in America.

I'm going to go strangle my IT personality now and stop ranting

1:25 PM
@KitFox yes, but they're made by an american company using foreign contractors, made to the american company's specs. As opposed to all those ultra-cheap android tablets that just use the open-source android, can't use the android trademark, and skimp on product design and QA and niceties like that.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Apple is not market leader in phones (Android is). And there are plenty of other devices that can do the same thing just as well (or better).

@Cerberus But Apple is not the part of capitalism that is in need of moderation. They just make stuff.
@Cerberus Do you know who you're talking to? I am pretty familiar with Android. It doesn't change the fact that the iphone is huge in the market.

I wouldn't mind paying high prices if it were actually 100% American made.

@Cerberus Yes, there are lots of devices NOW that can compete with the iphone. but where were those devices 5 years ago when, eg, hospitals started developing a mobile-phone-based solution for patient data entry?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 That wasn't really a serious, worked-out argument: just a general observation that one should be sceptical if people spend more money on the same hardware components made in China, and if a company spends a lot on advertising.

1:27 PM
Actually, I'd switch in a heartbeat if it were union made in the US.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Agreed.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Android has a bigger market share, that was all I was saying, Your Majesty.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I have already granted you that point.

@Cerberus Actually, apple phones and tablets are not priced at a premium the way macs used to be in the old days. No other vendors seem to be able to make products that are hardware-competitive and priced much cheaper.
@Cerberus but that doesn't mean that apple isn't a leader!
@KitFox I wonder what it would cost to manufacture the iphone in the US.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I agree that their phones aren't that more expensive: but they are probably still more expensive if you compare what they can actually do. I mean, what did you think we Apple proudly introduced multi-tasking on the Iphone?

user19161
@KitFox Because you think the quality would be better in that case?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I wonder that too.

1:30 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Probably not that much more: most of the cost is not the physical labour.
Just as with food in supermarkets.

@JasperLoy Because it would be better economically and societally.

My friend told me that the marginal cost for the average mobile phone is about € 50ish.

@Cerberus As well as the cost of following the various manufacturing regulations.
Of which there are none in China.

@Cerberus Look: If apple's mobile products had as much margin as their PC products do, Dell or HP would have made a kick-ass copy and eaten their lunch. It turns out that Apple uses really high-quality cutting edge components and it's HARD for other vendors to reach the same price point.

user19161
All the new mobile phones are too fanciful for me. I wish they made them the old way.

1:32 PM
@KitFox Right, you would have to include that in labour costs in America/Europe. But even then I think design, programming, marketing, etc, would be the bulk of the cost, i.e. non-marginal costs.

@Cerberus Are you sure? I'd bet the labour costs are significant.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Not if children are making them in sweatshops.

@KitFox No, I mean if they moved to the US

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Probably ca. € 50 now.

Or any country with labour laws

1:33 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, true.

Because they work those people HARD

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Samsung etc. are in fact eating their lunch.

@Cerberus I don't know about "eating their lunch". They've achieved parity with the iphone in the high-end part of the market, but if that part of the market had so much profit in it then the phones wouldn't cost $600+ at launch
@Cerberus Yes, yes, android is overtaking the market, but that's dozens of vendors and hundreds of handset models

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Look at Apple's declining share.

I'm talking about the hardware, and the fact that the iphone is pretty much the only phone with a huge third-party accessory maker, and the fact that there's still TONS of software only on iphone, etc, etc. And the ipad, which is a HUGE chunk of COMPUTER sales; the ipad still doesn't have any serious competition.

user19161
1:37 PM
Inspired by the recent question, I would like to ask who pronounces multi as multai here.

I want an iPad for my kids.
@JasperLoy I do occasionally.

I would rather have them worship the Devil.

@JasperLoy I use both pronunciations, whenever it suits me.

What's wrong with worshipping the Devil?

@Ashen Right good point. Of course they aren't really to blame.

user19161
1:38 PM
It's interesting how talk on religion became talk on the Devil.

@KitFox It is so terribly unaesthetic if done with white plastic boxes.

So you just don't like the look?

Anyway that graph shows the market share as a percentage overall. So there are two things to note: apple's percentage share could slip if another competitor is increasing the overall market but they aren't part of it. Secondly: Apple is a single vendor, Android is lots of vendors. If you ignore all the non-smartphones, the graph is significtantly different and apple is still an industry force

I'm just saying it is unfitting for decent Satanism.

I can't believe I am on the internet trying to defend apple. Cerb, is there no limit to your wrongness?

user19161
1:40 PM
I think multaivaitamin sounds terribly weird!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 They are a significant market force even in that graph; my only point was that Android is market leader.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You shouldn't have started this discussion!

How about some kittehs?

Yay!

1:42 PM
@Cerberus You started it! I just joined in

user19161
Yesterday Jeff popped by and closed a question, I thought he left.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 It was just a rant, no discussion.
@JasperLoy Arg! Ban him forever!

user19161
@Cerberus Nope, I quite adore him.

Haha. Aww.
That your oldest?

1:48 PM
ROFL.

Man, I hate the canadian government right now. Or, specifically, the Conservative Party. They hired a telemarketing firm on election day to call people identified as not-conservative-supporters, and tell them their polling station had changed location.
Tampering with elections should be a capital offense. Perhaps the ONLY capital offense in a democracy.

I personally know someone who has been sent to jail for election tampering.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Really? Sounds like a joke.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Wow! Yes, that should be front-page news with jail sentences.

user19161
There is this boy who always appears on Just for Laughs. People should know him by now, so that if they see him around they know something is going to happen.

user19161
Hello @marc. Why are you here today?

Sorry, I just can't stop.

@JasperLoy me? oh, just passing through while checking site status etc
nothing E.SE related, I'm afraid

Oops.

Hehe I know that one.
It is sort of true.

user19161
1:54 PM
@KitFox That doesn't look right.

@JasperLoy I think you perhaps overestimate Just for Laugh's viewership :)

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Anyway you know which boy I am thinking of?

@Cerberus well so far they haven't identified who's behind it. But if heads don't roll I'm going to be grumpy.
@JasperLoy no

@MrShinyandNew安宇 And right you should be! Although I imagine they couldn't have subverted more than a couple hundred voters?
If subverting is what it is.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 It's definitely a crime I would think.

user19161
1:57 PM
Definitely worse than rage downvoting.

8 mins ago, by KitFox
I personally know someone who has been sent to jail for election tampering.
So yes, it is a crime.

@Cerberus Well, the way the system works, if they managed to subvert a few hundred votes in even a single riding it could make the difference between a majority gov't and a minority

user19161
But I think the Just for Laughs team should back off a little. Some of the things they do could scare old people to death.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Is the current government that close?
