00:00 - 14:0014:00 - 00:00

Bob
12:00 AM
@NULL Uh. You did read the warning dialogs that come with the Refresh option? The ones that say they'll uninstall your programs?

@Bob Yeah and I was fine with that...but I didn't know it would change all my permisions

@NULL - Sounds like a permission problem. Take ownership of the files

Now when I try to open a file in my Admin account it says access denied....

@Bi
@NULL - Windows respects Windows permissions
The files are owned by an unknown user
Thus you don't have permission to the file.

How you you take ownership of more than one file?

12:01 AM
Does refreshing blow away the user accounts?

no

you can edit your registry

View the properties of the folder, add your user and its user group to the ACL

so you have a option " take ownership" when right click

no take ownership options unfortunately
oh i see what you mean
A program

12:03 AM
I keep moving to close my second window on my other monitor but I end up closing the window I actually want to keep open, lol

just do the registry hack and you'll be able to take ownership of anything with 2 clicks

What program?

Bob
@BenN It shuldn't, on a clean system. But on a system in use, who knows what kinds of weird programs have been installed.
I like how the USB standards download at 30 KB/s
they can't afford decent hosting, apparently

Security Tab -> Advanced -> "Change" owner and "add" permission entry.

Bob
@Ramhound Looks like Type-C was developed under 3.0 but included in the 2.0 package since it's backwards-compatible.

12:04 AM
But shouldn't you be able to right click on a folder and say Security -->Permisions-->Add Account to Read/Write Access? I can do that for single files but how do you do it to entire folders naitively in Windows?

Bob
At least that's what I'd assume based on the copyright notices...

@Bob - Type-C is more of a fork.

Bob
@NULL Add to a folder and it'll inherit by default.
@Ramhound A fork in what way?

Its separate but related from what I can tell. It has its own power capabilities that USB 3.1 doesn't have.

@NULL If you need to take ownership of a lot of files, I recommend the registry hack

Bob
12:07 AM
@Ramhound Hmm

@Bob My account folder in C:\\Users\ says its read only...that shouldnt be right?

Can we get an icacls report on it?

Bob
lol, icacls output looks like a demon-summoning ritual
3

Anyways...don't care if its read only what does the ACL show?
Most folders and files will have the read-only checkbox checked..

The read-only checkbox doesn't do what you think when it comes to folders
It actually just tells Explorer to look for a desktop.ini and do special stuff as instructed therein

12:10 AM
^^

oh..well here's something...when I click files it says Unable to display Owner

Which means your current user isn't in the ACL

Usually that means you're not granted read-DAC

add yourself to it

How?

12:11 AM
@NULL Just run in a evalated prompt the following command.
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

it also means the usergroup your user is in isn't in it either
Security Tab -> Advanced -> "Change" owner and "add" permission entry.
^^

@NULL try this. I've found it on windows forums to reset all permissions to default

@Freedo Yeah?

Bob
"try this, I found it in a forum" nope NOT DODGY AT ALL

12:12 AM
There is a lot of incorrect information on MS forums

thats for sure lol

Bob
Though probably a tad outdated

Im running that command you suggested...hasnt completed yet

It will take awhile.

12:13 AM
You have back-ups, right?

um

If things are royally demolished, re-installing might be the easiest course of action

Ok it finished it says:
how the do you copy in cmd

Bob
@BenN Yea, we've been through this before :P
Jun 19 '14 at 2:34, by Bob
@MichaelFrank It's MS Answers. Marginally better than Yahoo Answers. Sometimes.

> the use of the “secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose” command line is no longer capable of resetting all security defaults and may even result in the operating system becoming unstable

12:14 AM
control-c and control-v doesn't work with cmd
you need to use right click

Bob
Though in this case it's Technet which isn't so bad

Even if you do this. Your setting the incorrect permissions. Taking ownership is a "nuke from orbit" solution. The next step is to reset the ical on the profile, but if your not familiar with the process, easier to install windows again and backup the profile directory.

Bob
Apr 5 '14 at 10:02, by Bob
MSDN forums are better than TechNet forums are better than Microsoft Answers. By that, I mean you can actually find useful stuff on MSDN forums quite often, and TechNet is sometimes not useless. MS Answers is better than Yahoo Answers - that's all the praise I can give it.

The task has completed. Warnings occurred for some attributes during this operat
ion. It's okay to ignore the warning.
See log %windir%\security\logs\scesrv.log for detail info.

@Freedo I think you can enable those shortcuts if you check something called QuickEdit in the console options dialog somewhere

Bob
12:16 AM
@BenN Welp :P

@NULL Did it solved your problem?

Bob
System Restore might've been the better idea actually.
I can't remember if refresh creates a restore point.
Or if it deletes all of them.

No:(

IIRC System Restore is like the system state restore on a Windows Server?
Not sure on that

restore point doesn't effect user files, contained in the user profile directory from my experience, but that assumes the permissions are correct.
Refresh does not

12:18 AM
Before I did this refresh thing I did a restore point before the slowness happened but it was still slow so I tried this refresh thing

Refresh would delete all system restore points because it, moves your files, then reinstalls Windows and moves them back

Yes well thats what happened

In the future come to us before you try a feature you don't fully understand :$
Could have saved you this headache or at least prepared you

haha yeah I figured what could go wrong with a windows menu option

just try the registry hack so you can take ownership of everything important
backup it
and do a clean install

12:21 AM
@NULL - You didn't fully read the warnings. You also performed an operation while had a problem. Refresh is a great feature but like any feature, it can not work, if there are existing problems.
"1050" 4GB card, $150 price point. If I were SLI these together, besides the CUDA cores different, it seems like a better deal to me
Same price too

Ok I made a restore point now I am going for the registry tool

I still recommend to backup everything important and do a clean install after

@Ramhound assuming they sli. I seem to remember the 50 suffix does not.

Bob
12:39 AM
@Ramhound Eh, I've attempted to provide a reasonably comprehensive answer. Hopefully reduce some of the confusion around Type-C charging. superuser.com/a/1131553/117590
Hm. Maybe I should've done this on a better (self-answered?) question.

I think someone called me an idiot today, but the web calls so many people so many things, I didn't even notice :-)
Dude, I live on the web, your going to have to throw some 4 letter and 7 letter words in there also, to make your point. And do it all in caps too.

1:09 AM
I installed the Take Ownership thing but it didn't work...I tried to take ownership of a Pic and it even says I have read/write permisions but I cant open it
This is bad...every file I see says ASUS has ownership and readwrite privs
but I cant open
Cause it says access denied
lol

1:44 AM
Damn Intel HD Graphics driver.
Two BSODs in less than five minutes.

IMO they could have put 14,000 lines of code into windows7 to make error messages useful again, and people would buy that over another cutsie 1 bit icons change and other additions that are real fun, but dont get down to the meat.
But i donno, i know what i would pay for as an advancement. they must know what the (general) people wanted, because they FORCED it down thier throats :-)
EMOTE bsods, were high on the lists i was reading :-)
:)
windows had an error.
But it wasnt a really bad one
This time.

2:42 AM
Printer ink is expensive as heck, but the R&D behind it isn't cheap, either.
Consider that HP spends $1b on ink R&D a year.
The price you're paying for the printer is probably not much more than the BOM cost.
I know folks hate expensive ink, but I want consistent reliability.
Ink chemistry is hard. Really hard.
One reason the ColorLok paper specification exists is to make HP's R&D easier:
Mar 9 at 3:52, by bwDraco
I always wondered about the point of ColorLok Technology, given that most commerically available general-purpose printing paper has it. After some thought, it dawned upon me why they have this paper quality standard: it's so that printer manufacturers can design their printing systems, inks, toners, etc. with certain assumptions about the paper quality.
ColorLok basically specifies certain paper additives to speed drying and improve print quality, as well as certain physical and electrostatic properties of the paper.

Bob
Meh. All those arguments fall apart when manufacturers decide that ink is required for scanning.

@Bob There's a reason for this behavior.
2
A: How to print in black and white when a color ink cartridge is out of ink

bwDracoThis depends on the printer. On many printers with printheads built in, ink must be in the printhead at all times to prevent damage, although there may be a limited reserve of ink available for temporary printing. From what I know, some newer HP printers, even IIC models where the printhead is ...

This is not the first time I've said this...
Scanning doesn't consume ink, but there has to be ink in the system at all times.
> If a thermal inkjet printhead is operated dry, it can literally burn itself out and fail.
This can't be emphasized enough.

Bob
Meh. You've emphasised it more than enough.
These are multifunctions with printheads built in to the cartridges.
In other words, disposable.

That's a different story and is likely a design fault.

Bob
Or intentional.

2:57 AM
By "design fault", I mean that the "ink depleted" error is modal and inadvertently blocks other functionality.
However, it seems the models I've used provide a means to dismiss the error and allow the user to continue using non-printing features.
At least Epson allows this.
Not too sure with my HP Officejet Pro 8630, but I believe I can still scan with depleted cartridges.

@bwDraco lol HP and the others spent 1b$ on ink R&D just trying to figure out one more way to put DRM into the cartriges, so they can rape you for ink prices.

Let's not be such a cynic.
On to another question: if a sign-up form requires a company name to be specified, does this mean that the service provider refuses service to individuals signing up independently of a company?

Do you seriously think that HP Jet ink has changed that much to justify the money otherwise?

What if I enter something like "Individual" into the field and give a low number for the company size?
Can I get in trouble for attempting to sign up as an unaffiliated individual?
What about TechTarget requiring corporate email addresses for their content?
Ultimately, why do service providers restrict access to online content to company representatives (even if I, as an individual, can pay the cost if the content is paywalled)?
A title and company name are required.

@bwDraco some reject 'foo@gmail/outlook' accounts
Some may call you to try to do sales calls
I routinely use "lupinenet technologies" or my dad's defunct firm for things like that tho

3:08 AM
Why can't I, acting as an individual without affiliation with any particular company, simply pay the $299 and sign up?

sure

there is a solution to your aggrandizing and feeling like you need to donate to these fine corporations. Work for them, do the jobs they tell you to do.

sure
hell, in many places you can start a company for 2 dollars

(Not that I would, but I feel that's locking out content from interested individuals willing to pay but are not doing this on behalf of any particular company.)

@bwDraco just ask em? hey if i pay you $300 a year will you give me as an individual the same stuff you gave everyone else ? Cant guess what that answer will be :-)
it is probably much like buying 1500-60,000 specialty software, thier market is specific, and advertised as such, but everyones money is still good enough for them to take.

3:25 AM
$6k for a Visual Studio Enterprise 2015 license (with one-year MSDN), but Microsoft doesn't care who's buying.

good example

(I hold a DreamSpark license for Enterprise 2015, but have been phasing it out since I've graduated.)
I've moved to open-source toolchains and NetBeans. I'd probably get the free Community edition when that desktop finally happens.

3:37 AM
hanging out around more regular people, i see they run windows 10, i just lightly mention oh, your running 10, they immediatly say "I didnt do that, it did it by itself" geesh, was it really that bad, that you have to blame others :-)

hmm
only walked 4800 steps today, Doing PC refresh rather than dead machine duty \o/

is this website off for your guys too?

@Freedo its been having issues

Oh I was thinking I was under attack

go.thelinuxfoundation works, click.thelinuxfoundation does not

3:40 AM
good to know it's not me thanks

its annoying. I'm toying with signing up for one of their bundles to do during downtimes

Bob
@Aibobot I think comGateway stuffed up

:(
how?

Bob
I had two packages. Asked to have them shipped to me.
Both were in the list.
Today, one of them arrived back at the warehouse?!

0_0
we've never had issues with em

3:46 AM
@Freedo Down. DNS errors.

Bob
@Aibobot Murphy's Law, Bob Edition
:\

lol

Bob
why can't something just go smoothly for once

heh. I may need to bug fisher again at the end of the week, re the damaged headphone band

Will be meeting with a job club tomorrow to develop soft skills. Availability in the afternoon to evening tomorrow (morning for JMG) will be limited.

Bob
4:02 AM
@Aibobot whaaaaaaaaaaaaat. they think my USB (wall!) chargers have lithium batteries in them?!

0_0
Any way to clear that up?

Bob
@Aibobot not a clue. talking to live chat now

(also, is my switching accounts confusing?)

Bob
@Aibobot somewhat
Kristin:
[11:59:53]- I see that an email was sent to you today regarding the status of your shipment. On our email, we informed you that we removed package RCPTA0000000000000 as it contains loose lithium battery. As per IATA regulation of shipping loose lithium battery, a package containing this, should be shipped alone in shipment, meaning it cannot be shipped with any other packages.
Bob:
[12:00:09]- wait, what?
Kristin:
[12:00:14]- We removed the package so you can ship it separetly.
Bob:
[12:00:20]- the package doesn contain any lithium batteries!
also, the email didn't mention the reason either -_-

(tempted to rename the user workingmangeek or something)
erf

Bob
4:08 AM
@Aibobot erf?

hopefully they ship the stuff and give you credit or somethijg
oh erf for you
I've not seen the inside of a dusty pc alllllll day

@Bob they saw that ferrite bead on the usb cables, it is round :-) like a battery , so it must be one , we just cut it off and shipped it seperate

Bob
gad, how slowly can people type...

Bob
Kristin:
[12:16:07]- Our team marks the charger as loose batteries. May I ask if these chargers also act like powerbanks?
O_O

4:15 AM
at least that makes "more" sence. most of the li-ion shipping regulations though, dont have a big problem with batts that are properly IN devices?

Bob
@Psycogeek nah, powerbanks count as "loose"
that one I already knew

"Your team is clearly mouthbreathing idiots who couldn't find their own rears with a map and a trained smurf" ;p

when i have raw cells shipped here though, they come with enough warnings wrapped around the package to protect it alone, and it gets shipped all by itself in a huge UPS van with built in bomb disposal unit :-)

I mean "No, its not a powerbank. It dosen't have any cells, and ought have been shipped with the other things

paranoid much?

4:20 AM
@Psycogeek lots of places won't send cells cross border now

funny the regs are because of poorly packaged china crap, and cant guess who doesnt follow any of the regulations :-)

Bob
@Psycogeek Actually, yea. I have a powerbank coming from china... I think they're just gonna toss it in standard airmail :\

The heck...I just got a twitter feed in my action center

it is one perk from buying there.

Great..I don't even use twitter
LoL silenced them but now don't know where that list is either

4:26 AM
hi

so your not a twit ? http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=twit
"twit
The kind of person that makes a retarded chimp look smart."

Apparently Twitter was installed. Right Click - Uninstall -> Thank You

Bob
@Aibobot gotta wait a day or two for them to check :\

4:49 AM
:(

Anyone ever tried to run remote desktop software without admin rights?

that sounds like a terrible idea

I would love to remote control one pc in my office which I would prefer to have the employers using non-admin accounts. Is a workaround feasible?

and, we're back in the realm of 'ask a question on the main site'
sounds like a decent problem definition

ya think PETA will have a problem if i kill a squirrel that DESERVED it ?
3 days i have waited for that huge strawberry to ripen, and the lil' bugger just ran off with it.

4:55 AM
@Psycogeek who dares wins. That squirrel showed bravery and puck

my questions never get attention on the main site

5:09 AM
hmm. Anyone got a xp box around?

5:26 AM
@Aibobot yes, so a great warrier deserves a prime location, Head on the pole?
@Aibobot i think i can fire one up.
it is not very normal though, about 150 services and drivers are disabled (but works 100% without them)

@Psycogeek I need to see if %username% and wmic printer work

ok
put %username% in CMD it resolved to the persons name who once used that computer.
WMIC said, wait while it installs it, then went into some wmic shell thing in the cmd window ??? dont really know what that even is.
putting printer in then, shows some printer attributes
let me go back and do "wmic printer" instead
ok that worked, different. showed all the printers and thier attributes.
in some DOSey looking mess

Ah. Good.

5:46 AM
@Freedo Want me to bounty them? I got free rep for bounties for Good Questions, that are complete and explained and answerable, and have to be a day old.

1 hour later…
6:50 AM
'Copy and paste from a random thread on a website' is the hardest to predict, and depends on the specific website, programming language, tone of the description, and current phase of the moon.

@DavidPostill Someone recommend a good webcomic I haven't read yet please (source)

9:41 AM
@Rahul2001 Now you can see your question is impossible to answer :)

@DavidPostill I've only read XKCD and QC

@Rahul2001 So now go read Wikipedia and take your pick.

@DavidPostill Unfortunately, Wikipedia doesn't rate them, and really don't feel like going through the 16 separate lists it has

@Rahul2001 You also haven't define what you mean by "good" and what genres you like. VTC as too broad :)

Good: funny/geeky/school life/WWI and II

9:49 AM
Webcomics primarily set in a school, college or other educational institution....

@DavidPostill Thanks!

@djsmiley2k the idea I think is that no one noticed she's a boozaholic

@DavidPostill I'm not going to give my hard earned rep to some 80k user! :D

And I stopped caring about that information a long time ago :P
The project I used this for was downloaded 0 times this year :(

@OliverSalzburg That deserves ALL THE UPVOTES

Grrr...
It does not work...

Was that what you were trying to do?

Yes but several links in same message.
Looks like formatting gets stripped.

12:52 PM
So I will have to do one by one.

Bag advice? Or should I say sling bag advice? I never had bag of such styles.

See it did not work for you too?

Newlines... newlines break markdown

12:53 PM
Unless you put everything in one line.
Yes,
So which bag would you get?

I'd guess 2 but I can't really see a huge difference
(Not looking into detail at pockets/features/etc.)

On first 2 small bags diagonal zipper on the back is better than vertical. Because when unzipping everything might fallout from horizontal.
@PotatoCat I like 2 as well but it has issue with metal latch on top. It is loose and releases with some bulk weight. I was wondering if I can replace it with another of mine.

Oh yeah, I had diagonal ones myself
Didn't notice the third had a horizontal thing

@PotatoCat Diagonal are better isn't it?

we broke my minion :D

12:57 PM
Is the latch structural? IT just looks like a cosmetic flap to me
@Burgi Your minion got fired?

no
we fed him ultra hot sauce

@PotatoCat Can you see photo? amazon.com/review/R3V10JTDQUSGF6

he's disappeared to the toilet with severe hiccups and looking very worried

@Boris_yo Yeah but I still don't see what it holds

The bag I need would be the one to hold firm against my body while accomodating as much stuff as possible. The bag should not wiggle when I walk fast or run while allowing me to remain dextrous.
@PotatoCat I think it does not have particular function other than decorative and hold flap that is also decorative?

1:02 PM
if you have a hairy chest you can use velcro to stick your laptop to you

I am not good at moding textiles.

@Boris_yo That's what i figured... so not too important

@PotatoCat Any reason you don't like Option 1 besides it not having pockets of enough size to accomodate bigger stuff?
Do Option 2 and Option 3 appear of same style?

1:25 PM
They are all ugly ;p

If I know the MAC address of a client connected to my router and I spoof my MAC to that MAC with another device, and deauth the first device how does the router know not to let me on...since the other already authenticated..how does the router keep track of devices besides MAC to prevent other devices tricking it?

Bob
@NULL eh, each frame is encrypted. you wouldn't know the key

@Burgi now HR want a word ;)
@NULL associate macs to ports
unless it's wireless.

Bob
1:47 PM
@djsmiley2k deauth implies wireless

@Bob 802.1x works just as well wired

indeed.
deauth implies authed
@NULL It doesn't?

Bob
@PotatoCat eh, point, but I was assuming a more typical home situation :P
not everyone has fancy network setups (for better or worse)
speaking of, I need to fix mine :\
