Question: is my answer on "Is It an Odd Word?" here a victim of a Community autodownvote meta.stackexchange.com/questions/276269/…?
Hm, never mind. The timelines don't match up

@Sherlock9 it's possible, but it seems a little long for an auto flag

Yeah, that's what I thought after a closer look. Thanks DJ
'Tis still a pain in the butt :P

Yeah, I looked through the review history, and it wasn't flagged
I also learned that apparently I reviewed like 6 in a row on that same challenge. 0_0

Hahaha

10:15 PM
@DJMcMayhem Incidentally, how do you look through review history? Is the review history for the answer, the question, or the whole of PPCG?

CMC: given an index in a string K, output the line that contains the char at index K
e.g.
Hello, World!
asdfasdfa
sdfasd

input 18, output `asdfasdfa`

@Sherlock9 It might be a golflang downvoter. The only other downvotes I see on any of the answers there are Jelly and Wasabi (err, I mean 05AB1E). Of course, it could also be a coincidence :)

I'm not sure Actually can take multi-line strings

@Geobits O isn't downvoted.
Set Big O haha

@Geobits Wasabi XD

10:18 PM
Sure, there are others that aren't. It's just rare to see just some commonly known golflangs downvoted on a question with that many answers.

@Geobits Damn, there should be a language called Wasabi

After this conversation soon there will be

I imagine it as a complement to ><>

Hmm, I always wanted to try my hand at a multi-dimensional language

@quartata it's so fun that I've made two

10:30 PM
I also want to make a 2D language sometime, but I want to come up with a way to avoid all the <^>v "redirect instruction pointer" stuff that is in so many languages.

Jellyfish is a nice example of that

Just make one redirect, and have it go clockwise each time >_>

@ConorO'Brien link? there's no esolangs page

Is there a way to see how much rep you would have earned in a day without the rep cap?

10:36 PM
I think there's an SEDE for that

Or just any way to see all upvotes on your posts today?

\o/ \o/ \o/ GH now supports rebase merging!!!

Yes! I love GH! ...wait, what's rebase merging?

Merging done correctly
it basically merging but reorganized commits correctly

So it's like a cross between regular merge and commit-squishing that actually does what you want it to?

Useful for merging feature branches for for when you forgot to pull from origin

@ConorO'Brien yeah, zgarb

Yes, that's exactly what I need/what I thought the merge feature did at first/what I thought commit-squishing did at first :P
That should the be default behavior, IMHO. You shouldn't have to clone an extra commit from one branch to another just because you merged the two in the past

@Sherlock9 it's just for any reviews. I'm not sure how much rep you need to see it. Can you see anything on this page?

Yep. I think I just forgot it was there because I haven't reviewed anything in a while

10:49 PM
are unsolvable challenges off-topic?
I don't think so? is there a meta about that?

Unsolvable how? Like, tetris in GOL?

@DJMcMayhem that's solvable!!!! mutters something about vgol

@DJMcMayhem no, like "solve this problem in O(1)" when it's actually only solvable in O(log n)

It's technically solvable, just really frickin hard

provably impossible

10:53 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I know exactly what challenge you're talking about, haha
You could ask on meta

yeah
@DJMcMayhem drafting right now

Heyo!

@DJMcMayhem Which challenge?

Too lazy to find it

10:55 PM
What's the name?

Don't remember

positive negative arrays
in the close vote review queue

Q: Stable positive/negative separation

AlexandruFrom SO. You are given an array with positive and negative integers. Write a function to change the elements order in the array such that negative integers are at the beginning, the positive integers are at the end and two integers that have the same sign don't change order. Example: Input 1,...

Ooh, yeahhh....
Also that question is from 2011

The newest answer has comments in it, a useless define, and I have no idea how they got the byte count. Even counting the comments it's only 280 o_O

11:01 PM
@quartata yeah, but mbomb found it and voted to close
@DJMcMayhem decided on yes, it's invalid, but there are no possible answers.

I would close it as unclear what you're asking, actually. Fuzxxl's reasoning for why it can't be done is more a flaw in the specification

His point in essence is that there's no bounds on the size of the array

@mınxomaτ how did you find the messages that were trashed? I'd personally be interested in seeing what messages of mine were trashed, (other than the carets).

Hiya, 19B

11:04 PM
hey there

Ugh, in other news I've completely forgotten how to write JavaServer Faces...

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Manually. Literally dumpster diving.
Find the message that says "moved from TNB" and then count back.

I’ve been thinking about… trivial answers! Because of xnor’s post.

<!DOCTYPE html>
Hiya, Lynn! <3

@mınxomaτ oh, okay.
did you automate it at all?

<!DOCTYPE html>
@zyabin101 WTH are you doing?

@zyabin101 BTW, that might end up being trashed in the light of the new meta post. Just letting you know.

A: How can we help users who are put off by the use of golfing languages?

jimmy23013Make an alternative leaderboard Add a new section in the leaderboard snippet showing languages by categories, such as: Widely used languages New trending languages Obscure serious languages Golfing languages Special purpose languages Difficult, recreational or joke languages The purpose is n...

I actually like the idea of this solution

@Lynn What specifically about trivial answers?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ No. To prevent inclusion of conversations that take place in Trash for whatever reason.

oh, okay.
makes sense

11:07 PM
I feel sort of weird about them. On the one hand, they have all the problems xnor mentions. On the other hand… it feels strange to not share a short program I can think of, on a short-program-sharing website

I feel like the leaderboard in general could use a revamp
It certainly doesn't help this one-dimensional view of code golf

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ You are certainly not part of the problem. This was an artifact from the time where carets made up more of chat.

I almost want to post a Jelly answer for the sake of completion, and say “please don’t actually upvote this”. v_v;

@Lynn Yes, I completely agree, because where else would we post them?

@Lynn There's no problem with posting these answers. The problem is that they shouldn't get upvoted as much as they do.

11:09 PM
@mınxomaτ yeah, most of my trashed carets were at the very beginning of the "trash all the carets" phase

@Lynn I've been thinking about that a lot too. I posted a two byte MATL answer in 30 seconds, and spent ten minutes working on a brain-flak answer. I was disappointed that the MATL answer got 11-12 and the bf got 1-2 and no comments.

Has anyone here worked with SE's OAuth?

@Lynn IMO, the posts aren't the problem. Answerers should feel free to share their code. The voters should consider effort more, and that's not the answerer's fault.

It kinda makes me want to learn a language I know nothing about and then golf exclusively in that for a while

11:10 PM
There is definitely a problem of… people giving things votes because they have votes, I guess?

Yes. That.

@Downgoat Do you have a vim syntax coloring for Cheddar?

@DJMcMayhem lol

Re "the voters should consider effort more"... I just don;t see that happening.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ In the light of that meta post, I might also get suspended out of chat, and that's unlawful.

11:11 PM
It's burning my eyes working with it without syntax coloring right now

That and "This answer is sooo short! It definitely deserves more votes!"

no it's really not

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ it's one thing to say that, but it's another thing to actually write posts that take considerable effort

@zyabin101 how is that unlawful? That's the purpose of suspension.

Also, should we be downvoting lazy answers? Probably not

11:12 PM
Golfing languages are so much easier to answer in, once you get past the initial learning curve

I'm literally having to do :set filetype=javascript
It's better than nothing

I better get away from this asap.

@Lynn If it's not golfed, yes. Otherwise, probably not.

@Downgoat By the way did you push := to NPM?

@ETHproductions if it's not golfed shouldn't you flag?

11:13 PM
Downvote at the least imo.

@zyabin101 if the only thing you took out of that post is "woe is me, everyone hates me" and not "oh, I should seriously reconsider how I behave in chat" then yes, maybe you should.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ As "not an answer"? Perhaps

@ETHproductions problem is, golfing languages make it harder to tell what is lazy or not, since it's all short anyway

@ETHproductions yes, that's what I've done/seen

They should be flagged with "Other" and explained if they're not golfed. "Not an Answer" is for blatantly non-answers like "my cat ate a bug on thursday. can I feed it avocad tomorrow?"
4

11:16 PM
lol

Or as someone wiser put it: Answers that aren't actually answers. This includes anything but code that is intended to solve the challenge.

A strange/interesting idea: deleting my own trivial (like, ≤4-byte) golf language answers.

1. Low-rep users won’t get scared away by them.
2. They’ll still be there for high-rep users to see.
3. They’ll show up below all the non-lazy answers.
4. People can’t vote them up (I think?).
5. I don’t have to supply a reason to delete my own posts.

If you actually did that, and went through with the rep loss and all that, serious props to you.

(And even then, “PPCG is a code-golf knowledge-sharing website, and this post contains code-golf knowledge, but I don’t think it’s good” seems like an okay reason to delete a post?)

@Lynn iirc if they are accepted you can't, but other than that that seems okay

11:18 PM
I don't think I'd be able to bring myself to doing something like that

@Geobits That's not to say that every non-golfed answer should be flagged, of course. A downvote and/or comment might serve just as well.

but IMO don't, that's not the best solution to the problem

Sorry, laptop died on me

I’m not totally sold on it either… I’m still shifting the burden towards me, the answerer, argh!

@ETHproductions battery or fire and sparks?

11:20 PM
But it might be better than nothing?

@DJMcMayhem Yeah, but I think it's hard to write an ungolfed answer in a golfing language

Ever wanted to see [the plan for] an item sorter in Minecraft that can sort every item in the game?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ no, it fell out a window :P

(jk, it was the battery)

11:21 PM
(I’ve written some ungolfed GolfScript as an exercise. Comments, long variable names, et cetera. It ends up looking like FORTH, as you’d expect!)

@HelkaHomba does that work the same way as the one on the PPCG server?

@Lynn Deleting a fair share of the answers you posted raises automatic flags and is one of the default reasons for a suspension.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yep, it will

@ETHproductions it's definitely possible. I've (recently) seen a pyth answer longer than a python answer on the same challenge.

@Dennis Ahh, that is a problem. :<

11:22 PM
@Dennis an automatic suspension?

@DJMcMayhem True. I guess there are some extremely lazy answers that don't even bother to get a half-decent algorithm

Fwiw it was a new user, and they golfed it down later

@DJMcMayhem No, the suspension is not automatic, but there will be rate limits, Community will nag the moderators every time another post is deleted, and network-wide policy is that deleting content others deemed useful is not allowed.
In large amounts, that is.

I figured there might be such a policy

@DJMcMayhem Was that a car pun or did it just look like one?

11:25 PM
I'm tired of needless puns.
Making too many of them is exhausting

Give me a brake...

Wheel it ever stop?

Oh deer.

Spoiler: it won't.

@Dennis 10/10

11:29 PM
That's enough. You're driving me crazy :P
Hopefully we can steer the conversation in another direction

Carnot you guys stop?

@HelkaHomba I read Carnot as a French name and I was confused.
(would be pronounced kar-no for those unfamiliar with French)

Yeah, that one's a stretch

is there a way for an SEDE permalink with inputs prefilled?

11:34 PM
We may have exhausted all car puns.

Rule #1 for pronouncing French: cut off all trailing consonants, then pronounce the last syllable as if it were its own word

@DanTheMan ninjad. I already used that one

@DJMcMayhem Oh, wow.

@DJMcMayhem no.
@DanTheMan it is

what's a word for "non-golfing lang"?

11:36 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I thought so.
@Downgoat "Non-golfing lang"?
"Verbose lang"?

@Downgoat non-golfing lang
java?

@Downgoat "programming language"

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ lol

@Downgoat "useless language"

ಠ_ಠ

11:38 PM
CMC: Find a standard English word that becomes its antonym when you remove the "non" from the front of it and replace the "c" in it with a "b".

do you have one in mind?

wat

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yep

@HelkaHomba depends on your definition of antonym

Nvmd

11:40 PM
noncoat -> nonboat

noncoat -> boat

"noncombustible"->"bombustible"

@DanTheMan Yeah, like that, except one that makes sense :P

@HelkaHomba makes hard CMCs that somehow don't involve coding but are still cool.

Suggestion: Make CMCs into CMCCs (Chat mini coding challenges)

11:43 PM
Just because the challenge doesn't involve coding doesn't mean you can't use it. I'm using visca.com/regexdict

what's been happening?

CMCC: write a program that finds words like this from /usr/share/dict/words.
requires a unix system I think

That exists?!
> requires a unix system I think

?
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC afair /usr/share/dict/words is unique to unix

pretty much every person here has a unix system

11:45 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ how to check in antynoums though

windows probably has the equivient
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC nope actually

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ s/un/pos/

@Downgoat majik

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Go answer the easy one from AA31: How long to mine a chunk of obsidian by hand?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ there are no /usr/

11:45 PM
yes

pretty much every person here has a unix system

@HelkaHomba isn't that impossible?

windows is not unix

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Gnu's Not Unix either.
2

11:46 PM
@Maltysen it breaks, just doesn't drop it

Yis prism.js is beautiful

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ unfortunetly pretty much every person uses windows

@El'endiaStarman i see what you did there

@Qwerp-Derp I agree. Prism does not have monokai theme

11:46 PM
@Downgoat not us programmers

unfortunetly many people here do

highlight.js is also beautiful, but doesn't support other langs as well as prism

@El'endiaStarman does GNU have /usr/... ?

@Maltysen What East said (and it takes a long time) minecraft.gamepedia.com/Obsidian

I use Windows, but I have a Debian VM running pretty much all the time in the background.

11:47 PM
@Qwerp-Derp you can add langauges easily though. I added cheddar easily

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ GNU's acronym just refers to the fact that they have no unix code

Wot

they are unix compliant and POSIX.

Ah screw it, I'm using prism for now

@Downgoat i used to dual-boot ubuntu and windows, but then 8 happened, and then i noped the heck out of windows

11:47 PM
Damn unix, you even got a builtin dictionary
what ever /systemdir/something/something does unix have?

@Maltysen so you use ubuntu now? :D

@Downgoat Let me see you cheddar highlighting

@Downgoat yup :D

> How is a class named?

@HelkaHomba You should post that CMC on Puzzling.SE

11:48 PM
words symlinks to web2 - why?

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I doubt that, but idk.

@Downgoat EVERY SINGLE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FROM THE PAST TWO WEEKS HAS HAD THIS QUESTION

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC a lot.

@Downgoat i've been using it for ~6 years now

LOL

11:48 PM
@Maltysen :D +1

What's the average age of users of PPCG?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I mean interesting ones?

@Qwerp-Derp I'd say around 20ish

@Qwerp-Derp anonymous survey is the only way to find out

True

11:49 PM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC or SEDE :/

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC a lot.

@Downgoat who tells their real age, lol?

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I would say a strawpoll, but its only multiple choice
and i don't wanna type all those numbers

I'm 503

Social Media sites used: SE, TNB, reddit (post a lot), GitHub

11:50 PM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Every 9 year old kid on YouTube

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I've said it a bunch of times, and I'm one of the younger ones. a lot of people have (though not a majority)
@Qwerp-Derp lol

@Qwerp-Derp I've actually thought of constructing a query to try and find all the times that people have mentioned their age in chat.

@El'endiaStarman That sounds stalker-like.

that's really not a social media site.

11:50 PM
technically social media... (social coding, involves talking)

according to xkcd, it totally is :P

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I do

How many new users are there in the past month?

Average age on PPCG is 26 by mode

11:52 PM
Nvmd, that's mean

by mean it's 30

@Qwerp-Derp ....I could try and find out. (For chat, at least.)

@Downgoat Wot

@Qwerp-Derp a bunch it feels like

A lot of people are 26?

11:52 PM
@Maltysen technically, it's just grouped with a couple other parody social media sites...

@Downgoat stddev please

Yes, I know what mode is

and histogram

11:53 PM
And I know what mean is

he knows that also
he's joking

@Qwerp-Derp 1193 to be eexact

But seriously @Downgoat Are there more people that are 26 than there are other ages?
Whoa
On PPCG?
1193 26 year old people?

@Qwerp-Derp According to my sample, no. Of course, it doesn't help that my sample size is 1

@Downgoat People fake their ages.

Notice the spike on 96? That's people faking their ages

Now there are two votes

@DanTheMan we've already had that a bunch of times

11:55 PM
4 votes

Lemme see if I can find it

@DanTheMan nobody on PPCG > 35

I'm pretty sure I've already asked the question "How old is everyone" sometime in the past

iirc trichoplax, the downvote, and timmyd are 35ish
@Qwerp-Derp its come up a bunch of times

Apr 14 at 3:31, by Helka Homba
PPCG age poll: https://strawpoll.me/7367215

11:56 PM
Whoa

@Downgoat Nobody on PPCG is 67 :P

Like seriously I bet 80% of the people in this room are < 26
@Downgoat Get data for upvoted questions/answers > 0
Too many inactive users skewing the data
don't lie, it's anonymous :P
love the real-time pie chart

We should probably stop with the age questions, it could make people uncomfortable.

True

@Downgoat I'm surprised that there isn't a spike at 69.
5

11:57 PM
But whoever clicked on the SP isn't uncomfortable @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ

There's freedom of choice

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ nobody has to answer if it does

Anonymous ones are okay though

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC What is special about the number 26? In my experience, people mature at various ages from 16 to 80.

11:58 PM
@DJMcMayhem yeah, just being careful
@Qwerp-Derp but that doesn't mean some people aren't talking because of the discussion

TIL either nobody in this room is above 20, or nobody above 20 wants to share their age.

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC still a very similar graph, just less data points: data.stackexchange.com/codegolf/query/545010#graph

People don't like revealing that their old too?

@ETHproductions I think its the younger people who use the new fandangled SE chat :P

@Downgoat "Back in my day, we used to use wax tablets for chatting!"
