2:00 AM
Hang on. There's a lot of images to look at.

oh, nvm, just magic smoke

On the chip? What chip?

the one next to the soot
its a ST

look at that 660 ti
so wealthy

the one on the right here i.imgur.com/yVqkL6r.jpg
smacks @oldmud0

2:02 AM
That's a failed microcontroller of some sort.

Wealthy?

if you can google the markings you can tell what it is
amusingly if you're crazy enough, that's probably fixable.

Grr

@Ariane you're being trolled.

2:03 AM
I'd need a magnifier

that or @oldmud0 internets on a hamster powered apple II
@Ariane anyway

your case is fine

see how poor I am

Wait I'm upside down I think

2:03 AM
It's lying beneath the VRM section of the board (which is under a heatsink and on the opposite side of the socket from the memory slots).
This is a VRM failure.

67439218
I could read that off the chip

soldering, or replace entire motherboard like any consumerist would do?

@oldmud0 you'd need to find the part + fine pitch SMT soldering.
@Ariane errrrr googling it isn't finding anything ._.

The burned-out part on the back of the board is a MOSFET driver.

2:06 AM
Above that is a logo. I think it's uppercase italic ST on a black parallelogram

so, not the case.
yup
ST's the brand

lol guy pirates software, then asks why it isn't working:
-2
Q: No terraria folder in My Games

StroniumSo i have this weird error where when i downloaded terraria 1.3.1.1 off of IGG there is no terraria folder in My Games, and i can't run terraria. It just says "Terraria has stopped working" and that's it.

So. What's aVRM failure?

ah
@Ariane voltage regulator module
basically converts 12V to something else

I keep finding "how to repair VMM section of motherboard in hindi"

talk about indian tech support at its work

Huh. So what's the root cause ?

@Ariane if you can get one of these...
@Ariane poor design, partially

Of the motherboard?

2:08 AM
you'd have to get a fistful of those right

I'm kinda wondering how it ever did work

@oldmud0 presumably

well. The burned out part is not the chip itself but something next to it. The MOSFET is generally the hottest component of a VRM and is therefore the part most likely to burn out under an overload condition.

@Ariane either it was gradual degradation then BOOM

The MOSFET itself is on the front side of the board (again, beneath the heatsink). The MOSFET drivers are the STMicro chips on the back.

2:09 AM
But no I'm but crazy enough to attempt a repair. I needed to upgrade anyway.

@Ariane you know with everything else cooled proper the voltage regulation area can be hotter than anything on the board. sometimes i see people putting water coolers on, ignoring the air that used to go across that area.

@Ariane heh, Louis Rossmann would want you to try to repair :P unfortunately you probably need equipment and parts you don't have and aren't worth a one-off repair usually

Bob
@allquixotic well, it's only SMT
not BGA thankfully

@allquixotic actually, looks like something you can do with steady hands and a non shit soldering iron

Not worth it. Replacing something like a MOSFET on a motherboard is not exactly easy (but not impossible).

Bob
2:10 AM
you can get a decent enough repair with the good ol' tack technique

prerequisites: lv. 20 soldering, lots of research, uhhhh an EE degree

Given the amount of damage visible, it's likely temperatures were high enough to have damaged some of the PCB traces which would make it non-repairable.

Hahaha you people are awesome. I'm pretty confident even at the repair ship they wouldn't go as far as think about fixing an actual motherboard

Bob
there's an eevblog video on that somewhere
@Ariane most repair shops simply don't care

Repair ship? I'd like to go to one of those
Yes please clippy help me to go to one of those.

2:12 AM
Power MOSFETs can get very, very hot, like any other semiconductor device.

Gaha

@bwDraco the part looks like its about a dollar

Bob
why waste time diagnosing and sourcing parts?

Clippy <3

Bob
@Ariane look, they came up with the "case short-circuited it" excuse

2:12 AM
problem I see here is @Ariane needs to identify the exact part/subpart
since there's a bunch of variations of it

Bob
I wouldn't trust that repair shop if they told me water was wet

Hahahahhaha

@Bob you wouldn't trust any repair shop

So basically my power bars aren't the problem

Bob
@oldmud0 true that

2:13 AM
I re

Bob
well maybe Louis :P

@Bob Why not "even" in "...repair shop [even] if they told me..."?

why? because you are the repair shop!

en-AU difference? (I live in New York, so I write and speak in en-US.)

@Bob in their defence, more often than not, I would probably do the same ;p
unless I'm bored

2:14 AM
@bwDraco looks like you're missing a language pack. Probably find it in i18n.stackexchange.com

Bob
@JourneymanGeek true, it's not worth their time to ID and fix it

lol

@Bob and stocking parts and...

I bought a power bar and battery powerbar for little reason then. I figured they had failed to protect me against a surge. Well given their age and value they probably didn't protect much anyway.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek still, would've taken a minute to say "this chip is fried. replace the mobo"
but the case "short-circuited" it?!

2:15 AM
@Ariane This is not a power surge. This is a motherboard component failure. A MOSFET that is part of the VRM burned out.

Figured as much
Well new protective equipment probably won't hurt

Bob
I mean there is the very very minute minuscule chance that the case did interfere somehow

Power MOSFETs on a motherboard operate under very high stress and are one of the first parts to fail on modern motherboards (it used to be the capacitors, but the shift to high-quality Japanese caps has mitigated this).

Bob
in a magical world where unicorns exist

You know how random stuff happens to planes and they crash? Well same thing for motherboards

2:16 AM
Although I'm pretty sure I didn't need the battery one they sold me. I'm weak to salespeople.
Also i need to mention this is the most trusted shop in the city. Wouldn't want to know about the others

trusted by whom? iPhone consumerists?

@Ariane That's not what's on the front door is it?

By rumors I guess.

"oh please please please repair my broken s6 please please please"

People tend to go there and say the competitor doesn't even have actual technicians

2:18 AM
gosh what does it take to repair s6 glass? industrial equipment? giant induction furnaces?

Bob
uhm
that's not exactly a shining endorsement

I'm doing what I can D:

Bob
but, yea, I'd just replace the mobo

Well I didn't go to, like, Best Buy, so I'm probably a level above

even if the first repair shop ever devised an industrial tool to replace iPhone glass, it'd be obsolete in a few months

Bob
2:19 AM
but you're looking at new builds anyway :P

Understood. No need for a case replacement then. I'm relieved. I think my case looks pretty good.

with the iPhone 7, it's flat as a pancake. Probably everything is literally welded together.

Bob
@Ariane lol

Including the SIM card.

Bob
yea, your case should be fine

2:21 AM
Unlocking the iPhone 7 could even involve unwelding something mechanical.
I had something morbid I wanted to say, but I'd rather not..

Well then. So the memory, fine as long as it's 2133 or more. Now then. What about the cooler? Someone commented but I forgot

Something involving the ashes of Steve Jobs being scattered across the dies of every Apple processor

Tfw everyone else at my work prefers Apple stuff. Can't even badmouth them for fun anymore.

A single particle of ash is a necessary component to power an Apple processor

2:25 AM
So I asked, "Which is a crazier idea: making a tape drive out of a VCR, or making a portable water condenser out of a windmill and an air conditioner?"
Apparently, the response was "the latter."

actually, a phone repair place would be a better option for something like this

So, I think I will do the former

@Ariane if your not overclocking that same cooler will work.

I want to build a network cable out of duct tape

Which one is best? The water one or the air one? My friend said the air one would work better

2:26 AM
@Bob heh, I'd fix something like that our of boredom.
@Ariane air cooling is more practical, tbh
there's SOME situations where a self contained cooler would be nice, say if you lived somewhere dusty and need to blow out your HS often

How so? I've never tried water cooling so I've no idea

@Ariane the one you have the 212, what is wrong with using it again? it is said to fit

I live somewhere dusty, no thanks to my cat

air cooling is basically one big radiator atop your CPU

Eh my apartment is dusty but IO never clean thus stuff

2:28 AM
I stroke her and she gives back a giant clobber of hair

It fits? I figured I'd definitely have to change it if I changed my processor

water cooling is a waterblock where a fan normally is, so the heat is moved out by the water and vented out
@Ariane CPU heatsink mounts haven't changed much
so its worth checking

How do I know?

the holes line up

Bob
@Ariane you should come work here :P

2:31 AM
Eh. That sounds hard to know beforehand.
@Bob where? Why?

@Bob you should come work here

@Ariane google the heatsink model and the socket? ;p
or use the stock heatsink
which is good enough

Ah sure

Bob
@Ariane Badmouthing Apple is just fine here :D

2:33 AM
@Bob aaaah sounds fun

remember the terraria question? it still hasn't been closed

Lemme go search a bit for that heatsink and chipset. Might take a while in y phone

in fact nobody has bothered to downvote it either

Aha. It fits.
Will my processor come with thermal paste?

Bob
...guys next cube over are talking about becoming... Pokemon masters? Did I her that right?!

2:37 AM
Pokemon go?

Bob
I guess?

Sounds good.

@Ariane no, you'd need to buy some

Well @Psycogeek just saved me $70.
Ah poop. My previous one came with it. Not this one I guess. I'll order a tube.

Bob
LOL
Was this you, @Psycogeek?
> the customer explained that the default is so plain, so they took the High Contrast theme and made it more colorful. Personally, I think their new theme looks hideous, with garish colors everywhere, but hey, Hot Dog Stand is a thing, so who am I to say.

2:40 AM
So. On to the last thing I wanted to ask. The graphics card. Where do I even start? D:

Bob
@Ariane With a budget.

pretty much

Right now since my bank -er, friend- agreed to lend me money absolute price isn't a major issue. I'm just looking for the best price per year of effective use

@Bob naw i dont want a black and white theme, i want a black background, with Every Other color on top of it.

@Ariane now's a wierd time since the next gen is coming out
if I was buying a midrange card now, a 1060 looks good

Bob
2:42 AM
> made it more colorful
:P

1060 sounds like a good year to price ratio?

Bob
@Ariane yea, if you want perf/$, midrange tends to be best. sometimes AMD if your PSU can cope with it

where is mass customization for win10

Bob
I'd avoid the 480 if you wanted a card now because there are reports of excessive PCIe power draw frying some mobos...

huhhhhhh not here.......

2:44 AM
My psu is 660 W. I guess it's probably OK.

seriously, why doesn't M$ just give us ultimate customization control already?

Bob
when someone says "M$" I just can't take them seriously anymore

Maybe they want to keep control over it for some reason

Bob
same way I don't say "CrApple", etc

@Bob you couldn't take me seriously regardless of anything

Bob
2:46 AM
@Ariane -100 point feature hole

But I do tell my friends, "why are you using internet exploder? close that crap and open mozzarella fearfox"
3

why is it asking me for my password
wtf, microsoft website is so weird

Bob
because you logged in to one of their sites at some point and their SSO solution is dumb as all hell

Hmmmm so um... The next generation you mentioned. You're talking about the nvidia 11 series? Didn't think that was on the horizon yet

2:49 AM
@Ariane 10 series

@Bob thanks for the link. Interesting.
@JourneymanGeek that's not already out?

but typically a midrange 60 suffix nvidia card's a good card

and then when you click on back, it just takes you to their SSO redirect

@Ariane not yet

Bob
@oldmud0 private browsing gets around it

2:50 AM
So I can't buy a 1060, can I?

@Bob eh, @oldmud0's been low grade trolling

how is that low-grade trolling

@Ariane tbh, I'd wait a bit, use your current 660 till it comes out
Its a good enough card

Bob
lol
speaking from experience? :P

@oldmud0 oh, on the whole. Its low grade cause you haven't been annoying enough to kick

Bob
2:51 AM
heck, I could still use my 560, probably

@Bob my 660's still in use somewhere ;p

Bob
though I really want a 1080 for 4k -_-

and it replaced a 760 amusingly enough
(for the guy I sold it to)
only reason I went with my 980TI was 4k

Bob
o.O
@JourneymanGeek now that just makes no sense
I went from 560 to 760 :P

@Bob his apparently failed, and it was RMAed

2:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm in a weird place. The loan for the computer parts has my old graphics card as interest. I'm seriously wondering what I should do.

if you kick me, you'll probably make my ligands slosh around and before you know it, I'll start posting depressing 1000-word blog posts again

@Ariane I suppose a 960 would be decent but the next generation is significantly better
@oldmud0 or you could contribute constructively to the discussion.

When's it coming out?

apparently mid july
say august?

2:53 AM
Well I'm trying to make a new discussion because I'm out of date with what is new
Why? Because I can't afford what is new.

@oldmud0 that's being disruptive tbh
@Ariane I donno how much the delay for canada is

Sounds like my friend could wait for that little while. That's like 3 weeks

yup
but sometimes there's a delay per country

It doesn't come out at the same time everywhere?

and I donno what that is
In theory, yes
in practice, there's a lot of variables

Bob
2:55 AM
The spacecraft will be quite thoroughly sterilized by its extremely high-speed entry into the Jovian atmosphere. — Mark Adler 2 days ago
When I said thoroughly sterilized, I meant thoroughly sterilized. All RNA, DNA, and proteins would be broken up by the intense heat. — Mark Adler 2 days ago
We don't risk that at all. As I said a few comments ago, as a result of the incredibly high speed entry into Jupiter's atmosphere, any hitchhiking organisms and biological molecules on Juno will be not only merely dead, but really most sincerely dead. The same could not be said for an impact on an icy moon, which would break up the spacecraft, but not sterilize it. — Mark Adler 2 days ago
I'm not getting across how hot everything will get. Over 1000C. All carbon-carbon bonds will be broken. There will no biological structures left. Period. — Mark Adler yesterday

Huuuuh. In terms of geographical proximity Canada shouldn't be too long.

Bob
:D

But how come we only have a general idea of the release date?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek IIRC the 960 isn't a massive improvement over the 760.
While the 760 is close-ish to a toned-down 680.

@Bob 6gb of vram tho

Bob
2:57 AM
960 mostly reduced power consumption

Well, I'll go exile myself back to solitude and misery and loneliness like I have done for the past four years. Bye

That sounds rather sad. Bye.
