1:03 PM
the digital ocean saga is OVER!!!!!
my ex-boss had changed the email address to our accountant for "reasons"

o_O
legal reasons?
he's expecting a subphona?

@Burgi He's even more stupid than it appears from your previous comments about boss-1 ;p
@djsmiley2k They go to lawyers not accountants.
@Burgi They were probably complaining about stupid customers not answering their emails :)

1:50 PM
roar

@Rahul2001 Lol

I cannot find a key label <kbd>Key R</Kbd> anywhere either. :)

@Burgi Wish it'd go into more detail about just how the monkey tripped a transformer without conducting any power
(My assumption being had said monkey caused a short or whatever, through a 10,000v+ trunk, it would not have survived)

> It means that the circuit breaker associated with the transformer tripped. There's probably a vibration monitoring relay on the transformer that initiated when the monkey jumped on it. If it were something more serious, like a phase-to-ground or phase-to-phase fault through the monkey, then the monkey wouldn't have survived.

Disclaimer: I design electrical substations for a living.
in the comments ;)

Ah
Yeah, my guess was either the monkey knocked something out of place which caused a short (which would be bad design in the first place) or some safety system got tripped by the movement
That said, monkey getting in the first place suggests the electric fence designed to keep it out was badly designed too

2:01 PM
also in the comments. A raven knocked out power in canada. AND set a forest fire

>_<

and lots of terribad puns

Ah looks like Bob's gone
Was teethering on getting a Tronsmart USB multi-charger.
But I think he mentioned he just has a pile of cables from them
> Estimated delivery 20 July - 9 Aug. when you choose Standard Delivery at checkout. Details
Well that's a bit long...

Bob

Bob
2:04 PM
@qwertyuiop oh I have a couple of their chargers
work well for me

Thought you were asleep cause I couldn't see the fox in the users list
Ah, cool.

Bob
some people mentioned a port can randomly fail but I've heard the same complaint for Anker - usually cause a port got shorted and a fuse tripped
I'm using their 5-port one for QC 2.0
bought from geekbuying

That's the one I was wanting to buy
Well maybe not that exact one
5-port QC 2.0
(My current Aukey one has 4 2.4A ports and two QC 3.0 ports, seems it's rare to have all ports QC enabled on a 5/6-port charger)
> Universal charging
Combined USB Type-c and QC 3.0 with one port, it not only can provide an amazing charging speed to your devices with type c port, but also other Android or iPhone smart phones. Please purchase a usb c to usb a or usb to lightning connector and cable.
Haha talk about wilful spec violations...

Huh had to dig through some Google Plus blog to find out but the Anker USB-C PD charger has 45w on the C port
> +Anker's PowerPort+ USB-C PD has a 45W capable Type-C PD port which supports 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A, and 20V/2.25A
> My laptop is a Dell XPS 9350 and on rebooting it with the power plugged in, a BIOS warning message came up saying the USB-C power source was only offering 35W and the laptop needed 45W to run and charge correctly.
^^ @Bob: That seems to settle that one
Ah whatever, I don't even have a USB-C tablet yet

Bob
2:20 PM
@qwertyuiop Oh, the one I have has a single QC 2.0 port

Huh
Must be a different one then

Ah, 54w. This one on Amazon says 90w (18w per port) so must be all-QC :D
On the one hand, the thought of carrying one charger while travelling instead of five is nice, on the minus side the thought of one charger failing and all your electronics being inoperable is a bit... scary

Bob
most of my devices don't do QC
just the G4 and S7 really

My S7 being the one device that also needs quick charging the most. Or any charging for that matter
I've had days where I've had to charge it up from 25% to 100% twice

2:24 PM
lol
@qwertyuiop I tend to consider 'regular' usb ubiquitous.

@JourneymanGeek I basically didn't care about quick charge until I got the S7... now it's basically required for life support

QC, less so, but I don't have any QC devices. And the brick OP3 would have a non standard quick charge system

S7 being the first phone that a) Didn't have a removeable battery and b) Actually charges twice as fast on QC than even the best 5V 2A chargers.

@qwertyuiop in an emergency I just hook it up to my giant powerbank

At least one other manufacturer makes an AC charger with a 60w USB-C PD port, and multiple USB ports (no QC though)
@JourneymanGeek Point, I'm not used to having a portable powerbank... yet

2:27 PM
@qwertyuiop eh, my xiomi's in my bag most of the time

I do have a pocket sized QC 3.0 charger, will charge the S7 from 0-100% twice. But I'm not accustomed to having it because it's the first I've had and not had it for long

I don't use it all the time but its teh hotness.

@JourneymanGeek I think mine's going to sit in my travel bag all the time, but I have two separate bags now

ah, that would be an issue.

Ah the one thing that made me sorta want QC on a wall charger: Portable power banks themselves!

2:28 PM
I have mine in my 'normal' backpack

@Rahul2001 Hillarious :)

as opposed to my dog run backpack
portable power banks with QC?

@JourneymanGeek My normal backpack for workdays doesn't need a charger pack, most days I come home with 70% left on my battery :-P
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, the Ravpower ones support quick charge in and out. And they're fairly large, taking 10 hours+ to charge off a "regular" charger

@qwertyuiop my normal backpacks has anything I ever need ;p

My "Normal" aka "work" backpack has food, gloves, bin bags, and glasses in them. That's about it.
Occasionally it carries the work laptop too
That said, the Ravpower power banks also support 15w USB-C charge in and out, which would make it comparable to QC's 18w anyway. BUT then I can't charge a tablet/laptop with the charger :-/

2:31 PM
"gloves, bin bags...."

Gah I'll just wait a few years till everything is USB-C and then try again
@JourneymanGeek Now that you mention it I guess it does sound a bit... suspicious

@qwertyuiop you clearly need some plastic sheeting as well

Anybody know about Application based firewalls

@JourneymanGeek ...

2
Q: Application based firewalls for Linux

WallyLinux has IPtables firewalls like GUFW which can block ports and IPs. But what I need is an application based firewall like Zone Alarm and Comodo in Windows that blocks internet access to particular apps. For example, if there is a program like Inkscape/Gimp which doesn't require the internet t...

@qwertyuiop For Linux!!

2:33 PM
This looks like it could be my next portable power bank
Though the site that linked there said it's 15,000 mAh and has 2 USB-A ports, which it doesn't.

I bet even Richard Stallman doesn't know about an application based firewall for Linux. Atleast not a stable one.

I've set up my keyboard to automatically correct Linux to GNU/Linux

@Rahul2001 then you end up talking about the GNU/Linux kernel...
or android being a gnu linux based OS
or...

@Rahul2001 Firmware/software or YAT sh*tty Arduino hack?

!!s/Linux/GNU\/Linux/g

2:35 PM
@qwertyuiop @Rahul2001 then you end up talking about the GNU/GNU\/Linux kernel... (source)

Nope.

@qwertyuiop being able to charge a laptop off a powerbank would be handy ._.

@JourneymanGeek There's plenty that do that already, via barrel connectors though. I want to standardize on USB-C connectors

I've ordered a Pi from Amazon. What should I be prepared for?

> Right now, the expected release date for the MOS Reach Go is October 2015 at a retail price of US$99, with the device being bootstrapped rather than crowdfunded.
Reach Go seems to have disappeared
It's not on their website, and can't be bought anywhere :-/

2:37 PM
Pi 3 seems to have BLE and WiFi. Amazing.

@qwertyuiop that happens a lot

@Wally Richard Stallman doesn't use third party apps, he codes them himself to ensure that they are free software...

@qwertyuiop Xiaomi banks seem to be good

@Wally they're nice but the current generation lacks the features we're talking about

K
@Rahul2001 How does he know the compiler isn't backdoored

2:38 PM
And their biggest is 16000 mAh? :-/

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, and it's irritating

@qwertyuiop how big do you need exactly?

@Wally he coded that too... in binary

@JourneymanGeek Ideally? 27,000 mAh.

2:39 PM
@qwertyuiop that would be... pretty fat

That'll charge a laptop once, or a tablet twice.
It's not that bad
I mean in a backpack with a gaming laptop it's not excessive.

and eh. all this phone.charging talk.... ;p
pokes singpost's site

Laptop powerbanks? Are we in the future or am I just clueless cos they don't have them in my country.

My flatmate has the 20,000 mAh model and that actually fits into a trouser pocket... albeit only 1/3rd of it goes in

@Wally newer laptops are USB C charged
so with an appropriate powerbank, you can charge them off it.

2:42 PM
Oh! Cool. 5v?

Basically I want a 100Wh one, because that's the max you can take on a plane without needing to make special requests

naw, USB C does other voltages

(Gigabyte has a laptop with a 96Wh battery for the same reason)

Ok.

Hell if it were allowed I'd just take a damn car battery in my backpack xD

2:43 PM

All this charging talk... and I probably haven't even needed any of these for ages. Most trains/buses/planes have power sockets on them these days

lol
I think the local train stations do now too

There's atleast a 3 man qeue in the trains for the charger here

That said, the ones at Heathrow airport T5 are quite often crowded, well the ones that work anyway.
Couldn't find a working one that didn't require standing upright in Hong Kong airport either
And the at-seat power in business class was broken on the plane itself.
So maybe consider it "Shitty company insurance"

singapore has a ton, right?

2:46 PM
Never spent long enough in Singapore airport to notice...

Bob
3:01 PM
@qwertyuiop no/no/?
been a while since I last flew

@qwertyuiop most of the planes and trains I've been in don't
actually scratch that
indian railways did, but I didn't trust them not to make the magic smoke escape

Pretty much all long-distance UK trains have sockets now, and commuter trains sometimes do in 1st class. Also electric commuter trains in Scotland have lots of electric sockets funny enough
And busses, well OK, I meant coaches/long distance busses. Local ones usually don't unless they're some form of premium service

@JourneymanGeek Been to India?
I guess they don't have a queue in AC tier train compartments

@Wally there were a pair of sockets for 6 people ;p
and everyone else was old
Yeah, was 3 tier AC

LOL! Retired Govt employees probably

3:15 PM
lol
well
we usually fly ;p

I've never flown. Trains and buses are my thing. I don't even look forward to flying. Atleast not more than buying a Quadcopter

@Bob Sorta. The non-electric commuter trains all have first class
That said, all trains in Scotland are commuter trains
aka the national rail operator only has commuter trains and uses them for all their long and short distance routes
The only non-commuter trains in Scotland are the long-distance trains that come up from England. And the overnight sleeper.
Scotrail just like using diesel commuter trains for everything. And also going on strike.
@allquixotic Am I missing something? Do I need sound? All I can see is a 15 minute clip of a cat sitting in a chair...
@Bob Nice...
> The Active is one of three versions of the Samsung Galaxy S7, and it was the only one to fail our water-immersion test. The standard Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge claim the same level of water-resistance, and both of those models passed.
Huh interesting. And good to know. I'd have expected the Active to be more water resistant than the regular models, but I guess not. At least the S7 and S7 edge passed
What the... battery low warning on a workday? o_0 That's new. Also this calls for a quick charge... for the first time ever on a workday too.
That said I did spend 2 hours testing 802.11ac at 400-800Mbps

how does it cope with games? :/
i can kill a phone in 3-4hrs

Bob
Depends which games, I suppose

@djsmiley2k 3-4 hours if you max it out, yeah.

sadness

It would drain faster, but the CPU+GPU thermal throttle kicks in after a few minutes, limiting your power consumption to about 1/2 what it would be otherwise
Or it might be the battery thermal throttle... not entirely sure actually

4:06 PM
dear batteries, plz stop sucking, thanks, 21st century.

However, what I do know is water-cooling the phone allows it to run the CPU at max speed for a lot longer. So you can drain the battery faster.
@djsmiley2k Batteries don't suck. They're double the capacity of what they were in 2011
Phones just have the same CPU power as a 2011 laptop now too.

water cooling, as being below the water
yeah
but laptop batteries in 2011 also sucked

Meh, my current laptop is a 2011 model and still lasts 8 hours on battery.
In any case. Phone processors use tons more power than they used to, but batteries haven't kept up. Even though battery capacity has doubled.

@qwertyuiop it's Louis talking over it, but the cat is the main purpose of that video ;p
!!cat is just... one cat

I mean we've gone from 2-3w single-core processors in 2010 to 6-8w 8-core CPUs in phones today.
@allquixotic I see. 15 whole minutes of one cat.
In theory, at full pelt, the galaxy S7 can run from 100% battery to 0% battery in less than 1.5 hours. That's ignoring heat output for both the phone and the battery though.
You might even be able to drain it in 1 hour theoretically if you put everything on at the same time.
(CPU, GPU, LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, Camera, GPS, Speakers, sensors, etc.)
Same with laptops to be honest. Any modern laptop will last nowhere near it's average/quoted battery life if you turned everything onto max at the same time. Things with 10-hours of "normal" battery life will easily drain in less than 2 hours.

Solution to the RX 480 power issue: anandtech.com/show/10477/…
By default, power draw will be shifted away from the slot and towards the PEG connector. This will cause out-of-spec power draw at the PEG connector, but most PSUs are okay with this (as far as I know, most all PSUs don't really care if you pull 100W or more from the six-pin PEG connector, as long as you don't overload the +12V rail; voltage drop over that line is typically pretty low due to the combination of high voltage and heavy 20AWG wiring).
...not even 20 AWG. 18 AWG is typical here.
An option has been added to Radeon Software Crimson Edition to cap power consumption to 150W for compatibility, at the cost of reduced performance.
Don't worry about uneven loading at the VRMs—they are vastly overengineered. wccftech.com/…
Operation in compatibility mode does not significantly reduce performance, though. The difference in benchmarks is really small.
