12:02 AM
@Mateo - you watch the series Fargo?

I saw the movie - is it good?

The series impressed me. A co-worker turned me on to it. He made an observation, and I wouldn't have made it myself, but now I can't unsee a weird similarity.

Go on..

@hbdgaf :D :D :D
@Chan-HoSuh You get drug tested in your job???

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW as part of the initial screen, yes

12:06 AM
basically most jobs in the US test

@Chan-HoSuh I would so totally take home-made cake to that one and feed it to the testers!
:D

you're given plenty of warning, so basically the only people that would fail are the severe drug addicts that can't stop in time for the test

@Mateo Do you get the actual test results?

oh, and the extreme poppy seed bagelers

Has anyone ever heard of a hair test???

12:08 AM
@Chan-HoSuh can't give my poppy seed bagels up :p

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW oh yeah, that's why I assume it's just testing for the severe drug addicts... they usually only test urine, from what I can tell, not hair

I think you have to send in for them - but basically it was a last line thing - so you are offered the job - go get a test job pays for it, pass they call you in for the job - fail...

Hair test goes back in time as long as your hair is!

The co-worker though [Jesse Plemmons](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0687146/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t7) looked like a heavier Matt Damon. Went all "Did he put on a lot of weight for this role?", so because he thought the similarity was so striking he started calling him Fatt Damon.

Also, he looks a lot like an old boss of mine

Hair tests go back in time as long as your hair is! (@hbdgaf)
@Mateo fail, you get the drug test results?
BRB

12:11 AM
but no job.

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW I know. The problem there is that if you shave your head to start over, they can just elect to take pubic hair instead and get a LOT of history. So... either way, not a problem for me.

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW lol, why do you assume he knows?

@hbdgaf ō_ô

I'm not a drug user? obviously.

too far?

12:15 AM
O_O 15 minuites past clock out
this old lady maybe sweet, but man , we were just talking and talking . . .
ok, im off

@Mateo The funniest part is, I learned that bit when one of my ex bosses - a very italian fellow with hair springing forth from all over - back, arms, etc - was drug tested for a promotion. He wore a shaved head for no particular reason, so they took it from his back. Now imagine my face when you said wax.

lol, that would be bad if suddenly no hair could be found

It could be a scene from a saw movie ;)

it would be like - ok, now we know you are hiding something
but the plot would make it part of a fancy getaway in celebration of the new promotion

Oh, he didn't get the promotion.... still a funny story though.

12:26 AM
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW frankly even though I'm tired ,I'm happy that I'm learning something new for myself ~ Python. For the record it is my 3rd week

@Mateo So, in something closer to on-topic - I'm working on a mini-app to generate the card faces for both in game use and "make printable card images with bleed barriers". Small modification to make it more useful in the longer haul anyway.

oh, nice for printing the cards out?

You could print cards, send them to a professional card print on demand/print for order service, whatever. Just something that could prove useful for someone else that auto-centers, scales, etc all automatically.

yeah - like the full page marks when you export from photoshop

Think "So now YOU want to make a one-off of cards against humanity" or whatever else. You can just do it. There are already card bleed marks so there's no thought involved.
Cards against IT was popular enough to get facebook ads in perpetuity. Cards against retail could be HILARIOUS. Astronomically large consumer market too.

12:33 AM
@hbdgaf :D
@hbdgaf I didn't know that one!
(but makes sense: hair is hair...)

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW And the grow/shed rate difference would make it more damning probably.

the last page is good stuff
then the bleed/margin setup - pdf settings, ect

@Mateo I'm using python and PIL. So, you get dynamic scaling for text and card art. Color profiles aren't a problem. You could feed a variable amount of text and set the font size once after a trial run, etc etc. So many benefits to making it modular/an app instead of a template for an application.

cool, just pointing out the final output that printers like

variable text stuff could be to say "I have this one really long card, but I want the font size to be the same always". either way, using a product would be the more "professional commercial" way to do it. having an app that does all your resizing would be a more "Joe wants to try this out"
Yeah, I get it.

12:41 AM
Good night all!

night
@Mateo I was looking at this but your source is probably more relevant
Hadn't thought about anti-aliasing/compression blurring the edges of the text. That's a nice catch from that pdf you referenced.

ah, that one looks like cards - but with a custom back
@hbdgaf oh, yeah, sometimes lines around layers too

They're obviously catering to casinos or more "normal" looking cards. Which fit for fisticuffs (or would have fit for that guy that did Skrimish). They do custom faces too, not just backs. The other looks more like "custom magic cards etc" is more their audience with high color/detail cards
o/ @kos

Why do people install Ubuntu Server and then install a DE?
It doesn't make sense to me

Because alternate doesn't exist any more and it allows size and choice tuning

but you need to have a finer grasp of what you are doing.
just installing a *-desktop package on a server install isn't enough for a clean desktop. (in addendum to what hbdgaf said)

Agreed
I, for example, wanted lxqt, kwin, and not much else... so it made sense for me.

kos
It's the best choice if you have to install a not-an-official-flavor's DE. Less clutter and you'll probably get it right, differently from purging the existing DE and installing.

@ThomasW. One more question (apologies for being a nuisance). What if I'd like the package to have an Ubuntu-specific modification to the packaging? It doesn't have a Build-depends on libunity in Debian. But it should in Ubuntu.

1:28 AM
@hbdgaf Alternate?

That's not a show-stopper but more of a "nice to have".

The more i wake up at 5 am, the more i feel stupid, like . . . . A crisscross between spongebob and that donkey dude from Winnie the Pooh....
I thoroughly regret my schedule

@Zacharee1 one word: headless.

eh

eeyore was stupid? I never thought so..

1:30 AM
@Serg Eeyore was the smart, but depressed one

I was thinking in terms of longface, kinda depressed, constantly looks fatigued
Eeyore . . . .sounds like Slipknot song name

resisting posting a spongebob picture...

@Mateo go for it . . . .or shoud i post just do it meme ?

Eeyore was the "doom and gloom expect the worst" guy.

I was thinking of a specific one, would be inappropriate

1:44 AM
Ah. . . .
Meanwhile , I'm gonna make tea, and then will be deciding whether i should work some more on my linked list or crash and sleep till it's 4pm on Sunday

1:58 AM
@NathanOsman Give me the details, I'll file a bug, prep a debdiff, and hunt a sponsor (you can state that you asked me to do that in the bug when I file it)
@NathanOsman We can easily get the bugfix in, if we can justify it. Though, you may be able to get upload powers. I'll have to poke at it
@NathanOsman ideally, you have to justify the need in the bug, so specifics are useful
then i'll poke MOTUs
@NathanOsman also, it's not being a nuisance ;)
It was reported to me by the Debian Maintainer of this package (Nathan Osman <email address hidden>) that there is a missing build dependency in the package. It was reported to me that the Maintainer would like to have `libunity` added as an Ubuntu-specific build dependency for this package. The package does not depend on `libunity` in Debian, however it was indicated that, at some level, it should depend on `libunity` in Ubuntu. (This information was reported to me on Ask Ubuntu's general chat room; the specific chat message indicating this can be seen at http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/27396416#27396416)
nitroshare (Ubuntu)
Low / New

◔_◔

2:16 AM
@ThomasW. sorry, I was eating supper and missed your messages. I'll look over the bug.

@NathanOsman OK, all i need is the specific library that needs added to build-dep
libunity is not valid as it doesn't exist, unless you meant libunity-dev?
(a debdiff is almost ready, by the way xD)

Yes, libunity-dev.
Let me double-check.

OK

@ThomasW. Yup, that's the package.
Do you want me to comment below yours confirming the information?

it definitely wouldn't hurt
i'mma upload it to my build-tests PPA as well
since everything deserves a test
(i386, amd64, armhf, ppc64el are in that PPA)

Q: Unable to reinstall GRUB on encrypted filesystem

troffSooo....I made a mistake and deleted the contents of my /boot directory, including GRUB ....(btw this is easy to do, there is no notice that it will make your system unbootable)!! Anyway I was going to try to re-copy GRUB into the directory before I rebooted but.....I forgot, and rebooted, and, ...

@ThomasW. Okay.

Does anyone know if there's a way to see why programs won't open on Windows?

@Zacharee1 it's Windows.
the answer is self-explanatory heh

Both Nitroshare and Makerbot Desktop won't open
@ThomasW. Windows 7 and XP are good

brb

2:21 AM
But Windows 10 is a timebomb
If I open the executables, I can see the processes in taskman for a little bit and then they disappear

it's still Windows
and therefore the problem is self-explanatory

IMO, at the time it was released, Windows 7 was better than Ubuntu

@NathanOsman I've uploaded a debdiff - I'll poke around tomorrow to see what the process is to get you upload rights, but let me know when you make version releases in Debian, depending on freeze dates I'll see if I can't help get merges done on the software, to make sure it updates and gets its Ubuntu-specific libunity requirements. (Though, consider also Lubuntu and others that might not have it)
but yeah
all should be good

2:37 AM
@ThomasW. Thanks! The binary package will still work on everything other than Unity.

libunity-dev isn't actually Unity itself. IIRC, it checks for Unity running via d-bus and then communicates with it.
So it won't do anything if Unity isn't installed / running.

i386 amd64 armhf ppc64el are the archs in that PPA

Yup, I've got access to those in the NitroShare PPAs as well.

indeed
it's a force of habit for me, though, to ALWAYS run build tests

2:39 AM
(Though ppc64el is disabled since... who really has a desktop with a PowerPC64 CPU? :D)

heh
@NathanOsman this being a build-tests PPA, I have it turned on in order to try and match the Ubuntu builders
at least, as closely as possible
and you can see in that PPA that nginx is there ;)

It will be useful when the application becomes headless because then people will want to run it on servers.

indeed

@ThomasW. Yup, makes sense.

hey, don't forget about the new ibm machines ;P

2:40 AM
@Mateo For a desktop?

nah

See? :D

that would be epic though - I want one

@NathanOsman Indeed. I only recently heard of the ppc64el being 'readily available for enablement' thing though
so heh
but yeah, it makes sense to try and have a PPA that 'emulates' the standard builds - it helps catch cross-arch issues a little sooner :P
made that mistake with an nginx build once

2:42 AM
Yeah.

there we go a smaller image

How goes the Ubuntu IMB front? Most REALLY large companies I was aware of preferred RHEL for the support/warranty.

I thought Lenovo had merged IBM into their brand name
Ahh

no, ibm sold off their laptop line

So they still make servers, but not PCs

2:47 AM
wonder if any of the desktop packages are built for it

Why are there suddenly so many questions about the HP Envy x360?

@James is here!

@ThomasW. wow O_o

:P
@Zacharee1 some things I prod mods on ;)
thisis one of them
@James thanks
@Zacharee1 and yes, that's why I said "burn this"

I think @ThomasW. has even called me at odd hours asking me to get online and destroy spam.

on occasion :0
though it's rare :)

(And similar odd malicious things)

3:12 AM
at least nowadays

@James called?

@Zacharee1 usually an @ ping here

@Zacharee1 Yeah, I included my cell # in my email signature for a bit.
He found it on some mailing list IIRC?

ah

nope

3:13 AM

Maybe that wasn't you

it wasn't
i don't do that ;)

I did get a call once from somebody here.

I @ ping you here

@James That's actually quite funny.

3:13 AM

"Hey jrg, it's <whoever it was>. Check ask ubuntu chat, there's a bunch of spam. Bye. click"

lol

as I recall, that was about the extent of the voicemail

@Mateo no, I took the refrigerator out back, shot off its legs, took the remnants, lit them on fire, dropped them in a pit, and then buried what was left.
the refrigerator is, by far, not running.

;)

3:15 AM
@ThomasW. that should be the repsonse
Perfection :p

it's the insane person response
but it works xD

No, that is perfectly sane.
Oh wait, wait, wait. This one is even worse:
O_o
That fridge looks kind of evil...

@NathanOsman I think that's the point...

I think so too.

BOOOOOOOOM blows up

Poke /poʊˈkeɪ/ is a raw fish salad served as an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine. Pokē is the Hawaiian verb for "section" or "to slice or cut". Traditional forms are aku (an oily tuna) and tako (octopus). Increasingly popular ahi poke is generally made with yellowfin tuna. Adaptations may feature raw salmon or various shellfish as a main ingredient served raw with the common "poke" seasonings. == Ingredients == Poke began with fishermen seasoning the cut-offs from their catch to serve as a snack. Traditional poke seasonings have been heavily influenced by Japanese and other Asian cuisines. T...

@NathanOsman O_O

why does that read like a scam email lol

Because it is :D

heheh

I copied the contents of the closest thing I could find in my "spam" folder and changed the product name.

@NathanOsman yay, armhf success

3:23 AM
Woot.

lol nice
I'll poke MOTUs tomorrow

@ThomasW. To be fair, I do test locally with chroots - i386, amd64, and armhf.
So I would have been shocked if anything failed.

indeed
i do local i386 and amd64 tests
since armhf virtualization keeps failing here
but still :)
(showing proof of success is good)
i do it anyways with every nginx merge :)

I have an ARM device I can use for testing.
But usually cross-building works for CMake projects.

indeed
prefers being thorough though

that's just creepy.

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Nope, a bogus one I use to test stuff (namely foo)
Could you real quick? Because it's actually weird.

11:45 AM
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Ah my comment is too vague. I actually meant shutting down via DBus, AKA shutting down via the GUI, not via shutdown / reboot

ah! trying that now!

kos
Yup. Thanks!

I get a warning!
(through the UI)

kos
Yes, me too, but if click "Power off" or whatever (don't know how it's labeled in English) it actually goes ahead and shuts down the system.

@kos yup, here too!

kos
11:49 AM
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Thanks! Now I've got to grasp the rationale.

(as you might have guessed from the delayed response: reboot involved)
@kos I think the rationale is easy to understand... :P
it doesn't shut down unless you force it to!
(after a warning, with sudo, being root, ...)

kos
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Yeah I've suspected it. :D
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW But it's the same as letting regular users run shutdown / reboot without sudo.

@kos I would remove the comment: it makes you look like a newb instead of a very advanced user that wants to understand the full rationale!
:D :D :D

kos
I could kill another user's session doing that.

@kos yes, but if you want, you can block that...
@kos as root, you can do anything!
(on Windows, you can protect stuff even from the administrator)
but you cannot protect anything from the system user and I have a trick to become system on Windows...
:D

kos
11:55 AM
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW The comment serves the purpose to address the fact that the first part of the answer is not necessarily correct (actually it's probably more often incorrect since the message asking for the root password is actually the edge case).

@Tim ------^ I agree, read above reboot tests...

kos
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Right, but it doesn't seem to be a sane default configuration, does it?

(done for your convenience so you can adapt the answer (unless you don't care of making it perfect, then I'll do it for you if you give me permission!) ;-)
@kos Well, that'll probably depend on your definition of "sanity"... It's sane enough for me!
(but then I'm stark raving mad: I'm even madder then Mad Mac McMadden from Madagascar!)
@kos Could you cast a "close as duplicate" of duplicate for this one? I misunderstood...

kos
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Either you or me!
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Done.

@kos Oh, I am definitely mad! (Not as mad as ParanoidPanda or as MuditKapil, but definitely mad!) ;-)
@kos thanks!

12:15 PM
@kos Thanks, I'll continue to mark them leave-open then.

kos
@Mahesh I think someone just went through some EOL tags and flagged everything they could find serially, I've reviewed only 10 close votes today and 2 of them were EOL on questions tagged 10.10 posted years ago.

I found something similar this morning.

@kos That's a "problem that went away all by itself"... One of the mods is going through old self-answered questions that have low views...
@kos Yup... That's it.

@kos and the second one was a bug back then...

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Shame on me, I failed to see that the second one was a bug.

i hate the chat system
@NathanOsman poke - so to get upload powers for your package in Ubuntu, you'll have to apply for Per Package Uploader rights, and then make sure you follow everything in the applications process, have a firm understanding of the policies in ubuntu relating to development, etc. and make a note in the application yuo're the Debian Developer for that package.

2:35 PM
@kos No shame needed! ;-)
@ThomasW. Shall I ban you???

kos
2:36 PM
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW The first one shouldn't be closed though. I don't think that's the case, the consensus is clearly to not do that. Why would a mod do that?

@kos It wasn't flagged EOL! It was flagged "problem went away all by itself"
