@Terrance yessir, brisked tendon and tripe and meatballs. Combo
I'm hangry

@Serg FRIEND OR PHO! The game where you need to decide between a steaming bowl of wonderful noodles, or saving your friend from deadly lethal peril!

@Serg Yummy! We have a place out here that serves it that way. It is a hole-in-the-wall type joint, but extremely good Pho. =)

@JourneymanGeek if my friend is a badass , i can let him be and will take pho ,lol
He can figure out issues by himself
@Terrance can i ask a question about serial port again by the way ?

@Serg Sure

Q: PICDEM board and Linux connection through serial

SergTL;DR: I can open screen or putty session in terminal to the /dev/ttyUSB0, but characters transmitted are invisible. What could be the possible issue ? I have PICDEM board with PIC18F87J11 and PIC18F8722 microcontrollers, connecting the board through serial to USB cable to my Ubuntu Linux lapto...

That .....
Basically i can read helloworld in windows putty, but in Ubuntu it's all invisible
But i receive something, but it's all invisible

12:07 AM
@Serg I think you need to put a console=ttyUSB0 on the kernel line for the GRUB. Then reboot that host to enable it.
@Serg or it would be like console=ttyUSB0,9600 for speed

@Terrance sooo what you're saying is boot with microcontroller attatched ?

@Serg I don't know if you have to have it attached, but putting that console= tells the OS where the remote console will be connecting through. All the servers I have to deal with have some sort of BMC / Lights Out Management, etc on them and they need the console= or they don't work

@Serg Let me see if I have an Ubuntu host that is a server booted up here to compare what I told you.

12:26 AM
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW hdd arrived, need to find a spare enclosure

@Serg Hmmmm, I don't have any right now.
@Serg This has the way to add the serial console lines to the grub.

12:44 AM
@TheBrownOne Woohoo!!!!
btw: I was just updating index.html...
FYI: website was owned by root, so I had to chown it.

user139252
That's fine, thought I set it up properly

@TheBrownOne Do you like it? (so far...)
And thanks for putting it in there!

Hey Ubuntu folks, got a question for you...
Which one looks like the least crappy of an experience for someone who wants to see a presentation?

Oli
They're both about the same IMO. My biggest problem with both is there are a load of talks on there without the corresponding audio and slide timing. A lot of them don't make any sense without a speaker.

12:59 AM
Right.
But I want to provide it not for readers, but for those who were there.
Ok, SpeakerDeck it is. Looks a little nicer.

@James Neither works without JS

That's OK.
I have a friend who uses NoScript, and I'm tired of putting up with his BS so I don't even listen to him when he says "JavaScript"

@James speakerdeck works without cookies...

(Stupid IT security people)
lol

(and I can click any website bomb, look at their source and decide whether to proceed or not.)
So from a security perspective: my choice would be speakerdeck...

1:04 AM
More power to you.

user139252
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW looks good

Of course it'll be available as a PDF directly from my site, if that isn't your thing.

(path of least resistance, including security-minded individuals)
:-)
@TheBrownOne :-) Thanks... I'm going to be dreaming up what I'll actually do with it...
IOW: I'm off to bed..
Good night all! (including @GeorgetheDev)
@Oli: If you would have told me when I was 15 that one day I would really miss a robot wishing me good night, I wouldn't have believed you. (What does it take for George to be allowed back in here?)

@James I like the second one - clear slide changes, and previews of each slide on scrolling as slides - the other looks too much like a movie with markers

@Mateo Too late, I already uploaded it and wrote my blog post. lol

1:14 AM
which one did you choose?

SpeakerDeck

Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at snowypenguinsolutions.com.

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW not there
it'll be on my personal blog

cool, well my input for next time ;)

noted!

1:16 AM
oh, is that owned by github? that's cool
um... slideshare got my name from somewhere...
that is creepy

@James so I decided to try and emulate his setup as best as I could.

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Whose?

O_o

@James Reading your blog and responding to:
(VERIFY THAT THIS IS GOOD ENGLISH)

1:20 AM
Derp.
you know how many people didn't catch that?
now i look like an idiot
None of my proof readers caught that
hell, i didn't

"On windows 1" should read "On window s 1"
"regardless of if" = "regardless whether"

I really need to find someone else to proof read.
Because my current one sucks since they didn't catch those first 2.

a friends Chromebook = a friend ' s Chromebook
Back when I was a kid, "an internet", "the Internet"
(dunno if that's still relevant today.)

how in the world can I be logged into slideshare??

@Mateo linkedin

1:25 AM
blah

@James Done! That's it...

wow, that is crazy

Do you have my tox? If yes, you can send me a link there next time to proofread...

never even visited this place - and it is auto logged in

(I used to be an English teacher in Russia, remember?)

1:26 AM
does linkedin never log you out?

I just don't see the difference between "then" and "than"... (I know it but as I learned how to program if/then/else before I learnt good English, it never stuck)
@Mateo they use internal super-cookies, so : hardly ever!
(I only get logged out if FF upgrades or I change ISPs)

well, ignore my first impression on the ui then ;) that having a account and not knowing about it, as well as being auto-logged-in...

:D
Anyway: shutdown -h now
good night!

o/
Friday \o/

1:44 AM
my monday tomorrow. two days for another three off though, so nbd

@NathanOsman is the splash the only place you are using a widget on nitroshare now?
hm, the ui file is specific pixels

2:20 AM
@James as best i could is a colloquialism. don't feel bad

2:45 AM
@TheBrownOne Please, please, please, please no.
Argh - just seeing the picture is enough to get the song back into my head >.<
Now I need to listen to something heavy to get the song out :D
@Mateo I'll comment on the bug.

lol

@TheBrownOne flags as offensive

I'm going to try and figure out how to do filters for scopes before the contest is over ;)

@JourneymanGeek concurs.

YO Look at the site, look at that green streak

2:50 AM
Nice.

@NathanOsman ugh, yes.
get

@Seth At first glance, that looks like Barney
@NathanOsman @JourneymanGeek @Seth you want a bad song?

I don't like bad songs.

@Zacharee1 Just. No.

@Seth :)

@Zacharee1 I'd kick you but a slow painful death is too good for you. So I introduce you to the horrors of youtube.com/watch?v=AMT698ArSfQ

4:10 AM
@NathanOsman >:D

@JourneymanGeek I'm hesitant to click... rickroll?

@NathanOsman no. Just the worst earworm ever IMO
I heard it once in a supermarket...

"Y la baila and he dances"
So

And it kinda sticks there, like chewing gum on a pavement

4:12 AM
And cause I'm not a complete monster

That's the real earworm

But it's good, so trade off
But wow that music video's bad

;p
Its strange

Cups right

4:16 AM
I'm pretty sure the music video's about a mind control test.

Which?

and I'm sure the iscuits will be burnt
Cups ;p

lol
@Seth or @JourneymanGeek ^ ?

it's gone

@Zacharee1 >_>
What can I do?
(I'm not a mod here ;p)

4:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oh I thought you were :p
I was wondering if one of you had deleted it
@Seth quick

Just a bit more and we will hit 1000.

@kos edits?!

It's the review queue

kos
2:38 PM
I wonder why is that. Less reviewers? Before starting to grow it also used to stay pretty low (~250/300).

How do you have it so it shows everything?

You become awesome.

◔_◔

I think close vote queue is available at 5k.

ah
No, I can review at 3k
I was wondering about the notification thing. I only see that for edits

2:43 PM
It might be a 10k thing.

maybe

kos
I too think it comes with the moderator tools.
If I recall correctly I didn't see all of them before.

My phone got another update!
This one removes the option to automatically connect to ATT WiFi hotspots (Verizon Note 4 ¯_(ツ)_/¯)
And it actually makes it so you can hide the WiFi Connected notification

user139252
@kos why must you continue? :p

In case there's some Stack Exchange Data Explorer expert around: how would I go about preventing input values from splitting on spaces here?
DECLARE @owner_user_id AS int = ##OwnerUserId##
DECLARE @body AS nvarchar(max) = ##Body##

SELECT Id AS [Post Link]
FROM Posts
WHERE (
  OwnerUserId = @owner_user_id AND
  Body LIKE "@body"
)
I have no idea: I tried both single quotes and double quotes but no dice.
Ah the problem is with the DECLARE statements, not with referencing the variables.

const
;:p

kos
(Incorrect syntax near '0'. Must declare the scalar variable "@owner_user_id".)
@Zacharee1 const?

@kos ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Trolling

4:14 PM
@kos I think the site has gotten busier.
visits have certainly gone up.
so have posts
flags have gone up a lot too.

kos
@Seth Right, but did it literally spike recently or am I wrong? From ~250/300 (say a month ago) to ~700/750 today

@kos it's not quite that profound, but it is noticeable in the stats.
In early January there was a huge spike though.
how in the world did this question get an upvote and 3 answers?!

Q: How to enable vt-x without using bios? Bios setup is not working on Win 8.1, Lenovo Z480

Shahed UddinI'm trying to enable vt-x. I would not able to open bios setup. I tried to open bios by restarting my computer and pressing F1-F12, and Del button. And I also used UEFI firmware, but cant open it. So is there any way that I can enable vt-x without using bios? If not then how can I use bios setup?...

that's just poor quality control right there.

I like the way the answers don't really have much to do with enabling VT-x

kos
4:32 PM
@Seth Hm ok I distinctly recall the queue being at ~250, because I remember saying to myself "Hey the queue suddenly halved", but then probably that has been just for a few days. Wondering what happened in January.

@ByteCommander This should work: perl -0777e 'use JSON; $_=<>; $f=decode_json($_); $f->{addons}[0]->{'appDisabled'}=true; print(encode_json($f))' /path/to/configuration_file but for some reason it inverts the order of the top-level fields. It shouldn't be a problem in this case anyway.

hey I want to try freebsd in virtual box but it comes with vhd.xz extension, but virtualbox isn't accepting this extension?

kos
@edwardtorvalds It's compressed, you have to decompress it, e.g. with xz

xz is command?

kos
5:17 PM
Yup

@kos xz VirtualBox\ VMs/freebsd/FreeBSD-10.2-RELEASE-amd64.vhd.xz
xz: VirtualBox VMs/freebsd/FreeBSD-10.2-RELEASE-amd64.vhd.xz: File already has `.xz' suffix, skipping

kos
@edwardtorvalds xz --decompress (or unxz)

OK
@kos 162MB decompresses to 22GB LOL

kos
@edwardtorvalds That's quite a bit :D probably the virtual hard drive has tons of free space in it

kos
5:24 PM
On a similar note I tried installing Debian with Cinnamon in VirtualBox three times yesterday, it always failed at the installation step without an apparent reason.

Howdy folks o/

@Serg yo

kos
Howdy @Serg o/

@kos try arch, smooth as butter, powerful like a dragon, and certain as sun :D
running arch linux + gnome

So . . . . I'm thinking here . . . 16.04 will be all in systemd . . . .
I'm kind of starting to worry . . .

5:26 PM
@Serg in systemd or have systemd inside?

@edwardtorvalds you're aware that before 14.10 it was all Upstart, but now Ubuntu will be using systemd right ?

@Serg ubuntu has systemd from 15.04 :D

kos
@edwardtorvalds Lol. Actually I'm dual-booting it with Ubuntu (and I love it, it's blazing fast)

@edwardtorvalds yeah, but it was available for intallationj in 14.10

@Serg I mean whats new about systemd in ubuntu?
@kos ubuntu takes 35 second to boot, arch + gnome takes just 15 :D

kos
5:30 PM
@edwardtorvalds Yup. It was way faster than Ubuntu even when I was using it in a VM. And you should see it on a SSD ;)

@edwardtorvalds I don't know what's new, but I'm afraid it lacks stability. I have been using hard drive before with 15.04 on it.I also tried fedora 20 before . . . in both cases i left those out, and now I am just working on 14.04 . . . With fedora 20 my network manager just broke down . . . Had something similar in 15.04 before too. I am frankly getting worried here, because systemd seems like it works for a little, then breaks

@Serg the problem is with networkmanager right? how it is fault of systemd?

I don't know . . . I've never been able to quite solve it . . .
But i doubt it's a coincidence , two different laptops, two different OS, both have systemd and network manager in common

@Serg dont worry, systemd is working very stable, and I am very excited about it too. Networkmanger might be buggy

I guess I could try it again, but if that breaks at least one thing, I'm probably moving back to upstart . . .

5:43 PM
@Serg I am running arch with is systemd only, dont have problem even with latest networkmanager. should see if there is an update for it

Q: Allow the ability to search for words which are the names of tags without being forced to only search for posts with those tags

Paranoid PandaFor instance, sometimes I want to search for all posts which mention security, however when I put that into the search it immediately puts these [] around it and searches for all posts with that tag instead. Now in some cases this may be useful, however not all those who put the word security int...

@Serg as far as embedded programming or as far as any kind of programming?

6:16 PM
@NathanOsman whatever is good :)

Well, you could try Blender's game engine.
That's something I'd like to do if I ever had any free time: D

@ParanoidPanda Actually I can't observe what you describe...
I simply typed "security" into the Ask Ubuntu search and it remained "security" and not .
And as you can see, result 2 and 3 don't have that tag.

@NathanOsman Game development is probably above my level yet, hehe, but that's a kind of good area to look into.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, that's not what I get... Strange...

user136984
@ByteCommander: Try sound.

6:28 PM
@ParanoidPanda I tried "wireless" and yes, that gets converted. The answer you got works, just accept it. :)

user136984
@ByteCommander: I have. :)

@NathanOsman Don't quote me on this, but I'm guessing it will stay proposed until release?

user136984
@Nathan: It will be tested by testers, they will provide reports, and if all works as it should, it will go into which ever repository you are submitting it to.

okay, looks like I'm wrong.
@NathanOsman if I'm reading this right it should get pushed out automatically in a week or two:
18
A: What is the "proposed" repository?

Jorge CastroN.N. is correct, but let me give you an example: When a version of Ubuntu is released and is considered stable the stable release updates just don't get uploaded into the archive. So let's say a piece of software needs an update, after they go through the stable release update process they get u...

6:47 PM
@ParanoidPanda I'm not submitting it anywhere - it was synced from Debian.
@Seth Okay, thanks.

user136984
@Nathan: Whichever repository synced things go into then...

Apparently they go into xenial-proposed.

user136984
Does Debian have different repositories like we do? If so, I would assume that it goes into whichever fits best to its Debian one...

have you asked in IRC Nathan? That's usually a lot faster.

user136984
Yes, but they don't stay there forever, that is where things stay temporarily.

user136984
6:50 PM
They are tested, then either approved or rejected.

do you have a source Panda?

@Seth Which channel?

@NathanOsman you could ask directly in #ubuntu or #ubuntu-packaging. #ubuntu-motu is a possibility too.

Okay.

user136984
@Seth: A what?

6:52 PM
a source for what you are saying :)

user136984
What kind of source?

user136984
Oh, right...

I'm guessing Seth wants an authoritative source
so your edit to Wikipedia doesn't count :p

user136984
@Seth: I'm pretty sure that that's what I was told by a Ubuntu GNOME maintainer once because I was packaging some patches for them once... Though I don't know about the Debian syncing process, that was just a guess I gave for that...

I'll take wikipedia.
Wikipedia is more authoritative than people think :p

it built, which is good
but it hasn't uploaded yet to the repositories
which means it cant go through autopkgtests

That's automatic?

mhm
BUT
first it has to upload
then we'll see if it has any tests
my guess though is you need patience

It doesn't ship any unit tests.

didn't say it did

didn't say jack about unit tests
i said autopkgtests
they're different :P
