A: Burn the [database] tag?

PhrancisI actually follow this tag, so I figured I would take the opportunity to chime in a bit. I wrote a little SEDE query to find what other tags are being used along with database, besides the usual SQL and NoSQL culprits. I have not spent that much time looking at each one individually, but appa...

Why in the world are you writing Latin?

Dulce et ducorum est, pro patria mori

So, @QPaysTaxes are you familiar with the syntax WHERE foo IN ( ... )?

Yeah, how about the modern caesar? Veni, Vidi, Visa
I came, I Saw, I charged it.
It would be, yes.

@QPaysTaxes Assuming then you're also familiar with WHERE foo NOT IN ( ... ) right?
Right
So my idea was to make a data subset, although I wrote it wrong, that would exclude posts with certain Tags criterion

Visa Inc. (/ˈviːzə/ or /ˈviːsə/) is an American multinational financial services corporation headquartered in Foster City, California, United States. It facilitates electronic funds transfers throughout the world, most commonly through Visa-branded credit cards and debit cards. Visa does not issue cards, extend credit or set rates and fees for consumers; rather, Visa provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products that they then use to offer credit, debit, prepaid and cash-access programs to their customers. In 2008, according to The Nilson Report, Visa held a 38.3% market share...

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it's a clear request for a code review. We have a SE site for code reviews. — sevenseacat 20 secs ago

So this might be due to SEDE database setup, but I would have expected something like this to work:
WHERE Posts.Id NOT IN (
  SELECT p.Id
  FROM Posts p
    INNER JOIN PostTags pt
      ON p.Id = pt.PostId
    INNER JOIN Tags t
      ON t.Id = pt.TagId
  WHERE t.Id = @DatabaseTag
    AND t.TagName LIKE '%sql%'
    AND t.TagName LIKE '%db'
    AND t.TagName = 'db2'
)

How's it going guys and gals.

A: A code review without the code

RubberDuckI've more or less said this before in a different context, please forgive me that I'm too lazy to go find the link right now. No. These answers are not discouraged. Answers are under no obligation what so ever to contain any code at all. Some great reviews have been given that fall under this ...

12:46 AM
Whoa, finally got it working
Or... not
OMG finally it is
SELECT
    p.Id AS [Post Link]
  , p.Tags
FROM Posts p
  INNER JOIN PostTags pt
    ON p.Id = pt.PostId
  INNER JOIN Tags t
    ON t.Id = pt.TagId
WHERE t.Id = 2         -- 'database' tag
  AND p.Id NOT IN (
    SELECT
      PostTags.PostId
    FROM Tags
      INNER JOIN PostTags
        ON Tags.Id = PostTags.TagId
    WHERE
      Tags.TagName LIKE '%sql%'
      OR Tags.TagName LIKE '%db'
      OR Tags.TagName = 'db2'
  )
@QPaysTaxes ^^ does this make sense to you?
It joins data sets on a value/key as long as both references are not null
As opposed to LEFT JOIN and RIGHT JOIN which do allow nulls
Forgive the terrible aliases, but AND p.Id NOT IN (...) queries a subset of data that I want to exclude
And the inner WHERE clause uses simple string functions to filter the data subset
You don't know, until you know :)
It's more commons to use CTEs for things like that, but some DBMS don't support them
ahem... MySQL...

Q: C# Simple Binary Search Tree

Programm-istAt the moment I am learning algorithms and here I am trying to implement simple binary search tree. Q: Function to return the sum of multiples within a range

grasshopperA program that will return the sum of the multiples of any list of positive integers. So for example if I wanted to know the sum of every integer that was a multiple of 3 and 5 that is less than 10 I would add 3,5,6, and 9 to get 23. I think it's still taught in priest/pastor training, along with ancient Greek and Hebrew

1:25 AM
Ah, yes, good point
In any case, there's always Google Translate lol

@JeroenVannevel have you considered splitting the name analyzer into smaller ones? one for fields, one for classes, one for structs, etc.

To be fair, Latin is a very old language

@Phrancis thank you for the reply
I will have to just start editing them again and answer some questions.. I need to get my reputation up some more

@Lyle'sMug I'm curious what others would have to say about it

@Phrancis I am surprised they haven't said anything yet, actually

@Lyle'sMug - it's been a tough few days.
About in general, they are hard to be objective about, and consistent with.
as a mod, particularly, it is hard to differentiate what I think as a person, and what would be 'right' for the site.

1:39 AM
if I'm not mistaken, with Id 2 could have been the 2nd tag created on the site (though this could very well be due to grabbing part of another site's tags data, and to alphabetical order)

and, it is time consuming, and not-much-fun to try to write long posts about what i feel.... especially when tomorrow it may be something else, and I may just be contradicting something I said before.

Oldest non-SQL post with the tag was on 2011-01-28 07:56:03 : codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/359

If this AAA (like ) is the set of tags that make sense, and are easy.... and this ZZZ like ) is the set that are stupid and make no sense, and are easy... then, this is what tags look like to me:
AAA

ZZZ
there's a lot of space in between.
I find it very hard to put a line in there......
As for , well, I like it, but I can't justify my reasoning for it....
And, some of the questions make it make sense, but most are probably redundant.
of the redundant ones, the redundancy is not really a problem.... is it?

I would bet a quarter that those tagged with relate to some form of another of DBMS we already have a tag for
But, taking the example I just cited, tagging it with seems inappropriate, since it's all Java

The thing is, a database can be anything.... really, including a text file on disk, or an XML document, or an ObjectStore like Swift, or a file-system....
The abuse of the database tag is relatively benign, and does no harm
I don't see much reason to spend a lot of time investigating it.
Not at the moment, anyway
I would much rather everyone spent the time tackling a zombie, or 3

@rolfl That may be the wisest thing I've heard today!

Having said that, I don't want people to think it is unimportant..... keeping tags clean is important, but that is why being a moderator is sometimes a case of trusting the community.... and really "being the exception handler". In theory, you "all" should be making the decision, and mods just acting on the result ;-)
If you're interested in what's been taking up our time (Jamal, 200_success, and myself), mostly, it's been other meta issues, communicating with the SE staff (CM's and so on), and trying to communicate concerns about how the recent beta-clarifications affect Code Review, and what it means to us as a site.

That, it does
Not always a bad thing though

The vast majority of beta sites have appreciated the clarification, but a few, like us, may be affected negatively.
(at least, that's a big concern I have anyway).

Q: Graduation, site closure, and a clearer outlook on the health of SE sites

AnaBack in April of 2010, Joel shared our assumptions about the role of small sites in the newly minted Stack Exchange network: If a site does not have enough activity at the end of 90 days, it will be closed down. Any existing Q&A will be archived and made available for download, but the site...

A: What IS a Code Review?

rolflIdeal situation - asker Code Review is where you go to get feedback on your code that teaches you at least one new way to do things (better). Premise: you bring your code - and you have it in a state where it represents the best you can do. Expectation: someone helps you see things differently...

Though, don't underestimate yourself. I think it's easy to do to that, I have no idea how I ended up with as many questions answered as I have...and it's all within a short span of time (When school stuff didn't take up all my time).

> Premise: you bring your experience - there's always going to be someone who has less experience than you in something.

@rolfl While I think that's true, in general, it's doubtful when we talk about this stuff. The second I tell you something you don't know It'll shock me.
I haven't been as active but I lurk CR, and your awesome answers are still a study in and of themselves. :P

I am very good at giving the impression I know a lot, and I likely have many more years experience than you, but I am embarassingly narrowly-focused....

I do try when I get the chance.

@rolfl "ObjectStore like Swift"? Huh?

Yeah, I saw.

mmm I'm not opposed to it but that would make for a lot of work I don't feel like doing right now

@Legato I started here asking questions about MySQL a year ago. Now I'm starting to answer questions in other, non-DB languages, on occasion. We all get better with time :)

If one day there is a demand for it, I'll force myself to do so
I had a quick look at the diff you showed but I'll look at it in more detail tomorrow or friday
probably friday since I have an exam to prepare tomorrow

@JeroenVannevel sounds good. if you like it i'll be happy to submit it as a pull request -- would be nice to have more activity on my github account

@QPaysTaxes What is it with people and not wanting to sew?

2:11 AM
@nhgrif Do you have some sort of alert for "swift" ?

Yeah. I'm still so happy I joined the site and grateful to the people on here. I've gotten a lot better as a result, and it's why I want to use it more. I still am amazed at even my answer quality, and it's 90% just the result of using the site. I like that I was helped and could pass on the knowledge/awesomeness.
I do worry about having nothing to contribute but more questions though.

@mjolka a PR would be easier to review, yeah. It works with the latest version of master?

Nah, I have finally just had a few moments to drop in...

@QPaysTaxes There's your answer :)

2:12 AM
@JeroenVannevel yep. i'll see if GetNamingConvention could be used to simplify the analyzer as well (not just the code fix)

Tailors sew because X. Coders code because X. Figure X out, and you got the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

One thing I'm unclear about is why there are 3 naming convention-related variables

@Legato and others .... you don't need to be an expert to have a different perspective/suggestion on questions. You just need to know 1 thing that is more/different than the person asking the question.

@JeroenVannevel ?

Oh wait. This is the naming convention analyzer
That makes sense then

2:13 AM
@Phrancis But 42

Yeah, throw your changes in a PR. Much easier to review

Not sure, entirely.

Oh, right

But apparently, one of the firefighters is the husband of one of my coworkers, so I suppose we'll find out sometime.
They took him away in ambulance.

@rolfl you should pin this.

@QPaysTaxes There :p

@Lyle'sMug star it!

@Legato did that before I replied to it! :)

@nhgrif Life is .... fickle. And watching it expire is.. affecting. I have found it disconcerting and uncomfortable to process in the past
I still call my dad when these types of things happen

@QPaysTaxes I hate sewing. Needles, thread, all that stuff. Hate it. Why? No idea. I can't point my finger at the tailor though and say, why exactly don't you dislike sewing?

When the world gives you a Jeffrey...

@QPaysTaxes a git project?

@QPaysTaxes Probably about to the same extent hobby tailors do to projects where they have to code a lot...?

@mjolka will everything transfer across nicely from web express to community?

This already has an accepted answer, although @Jonathan is welcome to take his working code and post it to Code Review, if he wants it reviewed — Phrancis 32 secs ago

@Mat'sMug - you lurking? I would like to discuss your meta answer: meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/a/5421/31503
Your answer is that there are too many broken-code questions....

always lurking
what about it?

the way I see it, is that the bulk of broken code questions are bad referrals to the site, and bad precedents.

perhaps

2:33 AM
Your answer is about percentages....
My feeling is that the solution is the opposite of what you are hinting at....

Commented-out code is ignored by the compiler, so no, it will not make it run any slower or any faster. It does seem like your code doesn't work as intended though, which would make it off-topic here. — Phrancis 1 min ago

you are hinting that we need to make sure people stop asking bad questions.
How about if I suggest that instead the solution is to ask twice as many good questions ... and then the % results would be in line with expectations

@rolfl sure. except we'd need twice the reviewers.

true.
That aligns with my answer and hosch250's.

what I'm hinting at, is that people don't read. no matter how many walls of site rules you show them, they'll just scroll to that "proceed" or "yeah yeah shut up and let me post" button.

2:37 AM
That's true for all sites, not just us.

@rolfl exactly. and I believe the red box works on Stack Overflow, otherwise they wouldn't still have it.

I think the volume of those click-ignore-click users is a healthy sign
we have a high visibility and a high referral rate
what we don't have is a high "regulars" component
people who know how to ask questions that are not closed

60% of questions don't get closed...

It should be.... 90%

@QPaysTaxes that
@rolfl yes, we agree on that
ok maybe 85% for realistic-ness

2:42 AM
@QPaysTaxes Like this?
Did you read it?

I read "read this"

@Mat'sMug Yes, inquisitive is a good benchmark.

and 21 awardees / 50K users is a drop in the ocean

We are ranked 20'th overall (sort by ranking), and have 21, and our peers have 4X that

@QPaysTaxes People don't read text, except that which they are interested in
Most people, I'd say

2:46 AM
Funnily enough, programmers has only 16

I talk to people all day long who have paid significant money to have the text, and they still usually don't read it

a red box with 5-10 words will be automatically read, at least subconsciously
and that will automatically drop the off-topic % by a ton
or "Are you sure your code works as intended? See our [help/on-topic] for details." ..hmm even that is too long.
