Q: \[DifferentialD] not displayed correctly in Mathematica StackExchange

bbgodfrey\[DifferentialD] apparently does not have a Unicode representation, so I had to enter it directly in a reformatting of question 83672. However, I noticed that it is displayed in blue, as if it were an unknown variable. A minor issue, perhaps, but I think this should be fixed.

I asked a WolframAlpha related question on Math.SE.
In a comment I was advised to ask at Mathematica.SE:
Even if it is on-topic, I guess that you will get better help on the Mathematica SE site for this kind of question. — mickep 9 mins ago
Do I remember correctly that such questions are off-topic on this site?
@mickep From what I read here and here it seems that questions like this would be closed as off-topic on that site. — Martin Sleziak 2 mins ago

I see it is also mentioned in the help-center: "Some kinds of questions are considered off-topic: Questions on Wolfram Alpha (but questions on using Wolfram Alpha within Mathematica are okay)."

10:36 AM
BTW if they're not on-topic on the main site, would it be o.k. to ask them in this chatroom?
For example like this: Can somebody help me with this question: How to create animated plot of curve depending on parameter in WolframAlpha?

10:58 AM
Hello Martin, you are right that mathematica.SE considers pure Alpha questions off-topic. So, no reason not to ask on math.SE. :)
Unfortunately, unless things have greatly changed, Alpha is not able to produce animations; you need an actual copy of Mathematica for that.

Thanks for the reply @J.M. :-)

No problem. :)

If we can find some kind of official source then this could be an answer to my question.
Although I would expect at least Pro version to be able to make some kind of animations if they want 5 USD/month for it. (Not that I am planing to purchase it.)

I doubt that they would easily make animation capabilities available for a mere five dollars, tho. :(

BTW it seems that several people noticed your return to MSE; see this also the replies on the next day.

Wolfram claims that Pro can produce a CDF that animates, but I don't know how true is that, and I'm betting it can't produce GIFs from an animation.
Apparently so, but as I am stuck with using a friend's smartphone, I don't think I am ready yet to produce nicely TeX'd up answers on math.SE.
…but I have seen unanswered questions that I can deal with, as soon as I get my computer back.

11:22 AM
No problem. I will at least at a comment linking to this chat that this is (very very probably) not possible.
According to what I was told in chat, it is not possible to create animations in WA. (At least not with the free version.) — Martin Sleziak 35 secs ago

Regarding this question, do you guys know any tools that can do purely edge routing if the vertex coordinates are given? I need something that can be controlled programmatically. yEd is good, but it's a GUI program.

Nice question, how'd I miss it? Too bad I'm out of votes again today…

@Mr.Wizard Do you know how to prevent shrinking Buttons when the window is narrowed down?
Grid[
 {{
   Grid@List@Table[
      Pane@
       Button[Image@Rasterize@Graphics[Disk[], ImageSize -> 60], 1,
        ImageSize -> All],
      {5}],
   1
   }},
 ItemSize -> {{Scaled@.7, Scaled@.3}}, Alignment -> {{Left, Right}}]
without stating explicit ImageSize of buttons.
or @ anyone else ;)

1:37 PM
@Kuba I think I should know but I can't remember. Let me see what I can find.

@Mr.Wizard What I'm currently doing is to apply Imag[#,ImageSize->ImageDimensions[#]]& on the label
it works but I lots a lot of time to track this down.
Action menu in this case does not care and behaves properly.
So my controllers were varying with size and I was looking for the cause.
Only by accident I found out it is because of "automatic" behaviour...
$%^&, those incosistencies in default options are pissing me off -.-

@Kuba I think a second insertion of ImageSize -> All behaves as you want:
Grid[{{Grid@
    List@Table[Button[
       Image[Rasterize@Graphics[Disk[], ImageSize -> 60], Automatic, ImageSize -> All], 1,
        ImageSize -> All], {5}], 1}}, ItemSize -> {{Scaled@.7, Scaled@.3}},
 Alignment -> {{Left, Right}}]

@Mr.Wizard Yep, that works too, thanks.

@Kuba If I leave out Image it seems to work too:
Grid[{{Grid@
    List@Table[Button[Rasterize@Graphics[Disk[], ImageSize -> 60], 1,
       ImageSize -> All], {5}], 1}}, ItemSize -> {{Scaled@.7, Scaled@.3}},
 Alignment -> {{Left, Right}}]

Oh joy. Yet another kernel-crasher: DiscretizeRegion[Polygon[{{0, 1}, {0, 0}, {0, 1}, {1, 0}}]]...

I favor closing mathematica.stackexchange.com/q/20023 as a duplicate of mathematica.stackexchange.com/q/1300 or perhaps mathematica.stackexchange.com/q/5185 (which itself is closed but is a clearer formulation) as the solutions are essentially identical but for a Graphics instead of Graphics3D. I would like opinions before I act.

It's so great to be working on something and to hear that kernel-crashing "dunk" sound (at least on OSX). "It got considerably more complicated once again" tends to be my first thought.

Hmmh. I don't see those intersecting circles on my own session.

@Guesswhoitis. never got it. Where'd you send it?

10:30 PM
@Shog, sent it to your stackoverflow.com address. Should I have sent it to a different address?

10:40 PM
@Guesswhoitis. from which address?
nevermind, I found it in the spam folder
guessing some combination of "guess" and "pleasure" got Google's spam-checker all hot & bothered.
WELCOME BACK, JM-the-mod

Argh, damn spam filters. :D
Thanks for restoring my modly powers, Great Shog! :D Now if only getting my computer back was just as easy…

Next time prefix it with "INCREASE THE G1RTH OF YOUR M0D T34M!!!" - that'll always get through.

Unfortunately, writing 1337 hurts my feeble mind. ;D
Nowadays, "girth" reminds me of the season finale of Silicon Valley's first season… :D

I should watch that. Wonder if it'll ever be on Netflix

I think HBO is not that reasonable, at least with their current management. :(

eh; they know their market & they're serving them well. I'm not in that market though.
I'm not gonna be buying an Apple phone any time soon either, but more power to 'em for making something that the folks who will do want.

That's true…
