@Fabby do you know a nice Ubuntu installation guide around here? (or somebody else?) I want to link it to an answer (How to install on second physical drive?)

user136984
What do you people think of this?

user136984

@Toroidal Again listened to AC/DC? ;D

user136984
@ByteCommander Yep! :D

user136984
And every time I get an advert which refuses to be skipper! :D

user136984
4:05 PM
And that advert is... The video I just linked to! :D Apparently it is "similar to the current video"! :D

Oops
@muru: missed you. Was in another tab...
You still here?

@Toroidal You should kill some cookies eventually?

@ByteCommander: 1 minute: I'm looking

user136984
@ByteCommander Yes, maybe I should... :D But being forced to watch that weird 'cat' isn't so bad... :D

@ByteCommander looking for this: askubuntu.com/questions/6328/how-do-i-install-ubuntu ?

user136984
4:07 PM
@Toroidal Oh and by the way I meant "skipped" and not "skipper".

@Fabby I found something else, but thanks. I only dropped the links into a comment, anyway, so it is enough...

user136984
Does anyone know if this is the official AC/DC website?

I should log out now, so bye until tomorrow maybe...

@ByteCommander Bye!

@Toroidal hehehe....Adblock FTW

4:14 PM
@Toroidal: you yanking my chain again???

user136984
@Fabby What of what I said are you referring to?

@Toroidal lol

acdc.com ???
@Rinzwind: need extra credit?

user136984
Ahh, no, I just wasn't sure because there were so many websites which were claiming to be the official one.

Yeah sure: a 4-letter web site of one of the most successful bands ever is not the real stuff!
that's like asking if IBM.com is the real IBM web site...
:P ;-)

user136984
4:20 PM
There were lots of them with the same name, there was a .net, a .co.uk, a .biz, a .me, etc...

user136984
So just wanted to make sure I was going to the right one! :D

(shake)

user136984
Has this got anything to do with Ubuntu?

Or is it what it looks like - a Python question?

4:26 PM
xD NED just earned another sub looool

@Toroidal Yup, python.

user136984
How do I uninstall a font that I installed using a TTF file?

"Just wanted to let you know so you didn't worry if someone broke and...farted or anything..."
xD
^ best episode yet

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness facepalm... You actually watch that?! :D

@Toroidal Dude. It's hilarious :D

user136984
4:34 PM
I beg to differ...

user136984
I can't stand it! It's awful! :D

Well. To every man his own

user136984
It is just that the man talks as if he knows he is really funny, but is pretending not to be... And if that it not done intentionally, then it really ruins comedy! :D

user136984
@Fabby: Don't tell me you are a fan of that cat too? :D

@Toroidal voted to close.
Is it a video of someone kicking a cat??? >:)

user136984
4:40 PM
No... Talking cat... And a guy who thinks he is really funny...

user136984
:D

meh...
Question on the intricacies of the English language...
How would you write (in English) the sound of "spitting"?

user136984
@Fabby: I think it is "ptui".

@Fabby I have no idea. :D

:D
I'll ask on english.stackexchange.com

user136984
4:44 PM
Well, there is a long discussion on it here... :D

user136984
By the way, could someone please take a look at my question here some time:

Q: How to uninstall a TrueType font

ToroidalI have installed a font, and now I wish to remove it, but I am not sure exactly how... I installed it by opening the .TTF file and clicking the "Install" button. But there is no uninstall button, and no obvious way of uninstalling a font installed in that way. So my question is really obvious, h...

user136984
:)

:D
Lemme look...
OK, don't have a shell script for that, but what I would do is
delete the file and rebuild the font cache...
Want an answer?
@Toroidal Or do you want to answer yourself???

Do you even need to rebuild the font cache? I think you can just delete the file...

4:56 PM
I don't think so...
I installed a bunch of fonts a while ago
(and actually read the manual)
and it said to rebuild the font cache when manually adding or deleting...
(I didn't make a shell script though)
lemme look at my howtos

Hmm. I never had to do that.
I've installed several fonts by just copy/pasting and it's worked fine.

It's worse:
To install for all users:
sudo cp *.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/Fabby
sudo cp *.otf /usr/share/fonts/opentype/Fabby
#("Fabby" for easier backup)
sudo fc-cache -f -v

To install for one user:
cp *.?tf $HOME/.fonts
log out and log back in
So log out and back in if for one user, rebuild font cache if for all users...
@RPiAwesomeness: so now you're one of the few here that know my real first name!

;-)
Like I know Rincewind's and Toroidal's...
slip of the copy-paste!

I think I've always caught myself before posting screenies/copy-paste

5:02 PM
Nathan and Florian know my full name...

5:14 PM
@Fabby Hope you don't mind that I used your command in my answer. I linked to your chat message.

Huh?
You answered Toroidal's Q?
With the stuff I posted here?
You vampire! While I was chatting in another room!
>:) :P
OK, smoke-break!
BRB!
@RPiAwesomeness (but first and edit and an upvote)
now SMOKE!!!

@Mateo: this is going to be a little hard to understand, but after spending multiple hours fighting CMake, I came to the conclusion that it isn't going to work for NitroShare. It is simply too difficult to get extra commands to run after building. Therefore, I will be switching the build system back to qmake, which offers much more options.
It was a difficult decision and not one that I made lightly, considering all of the time invested in CMake so far.
qmake does, however, integrate a bit better with the Qt build commands. It's also used by Qt Creator, so it does scale to larger projects.

5:54 PM
:1999839 cool, even though you needed the SDK qmake was easier, and macdeployqt was really easy for doing the app bundle
At least from what I saw on the Mac side so far

(playing now... It's actually quite beautiful in its original version)

Yup, macdeployqt will definitely be used :)

Q: Is there an accepted definition of "future proof"?

Elder GeekI was reviewing a question where I noticed that it was recommended to "future proof" older answers. I must admit that even after searching http://meta.askubuntu.com/search?q=future+proof I'm baffled as to what this actually means. I'm all for updating Q&A's as we go but as I'm only human I don't ...

Die, evil question!

6:07 PM
@SmokeDetector this is still a stupid worded question

@NathanOsman: Did you delete?
I was editing it...
offensive title removed and cleaning up...

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness @Fabby: The answer that RPiAwesomeness gave here still didn't answer my question (look in comments for more information).

brb

user136984
As I said in the comments, I went to the TrueType folder which was pointed to in the answer, but it was not there...

6:19 PM
@Toroidal: Is this more urgent then my food?
(I'm in the kitchen. If yes: I'll stop the stove)

user136984
It really depends on the type of food, and what's cooking! ;D :P

I'll stop the stove

user136984
:D

do:
updatedb
locate NameOfFile

user136984
@Fabby: In Terminal?

user136984
6:24 PM
I tried, and it outputted: updatedb: can not open a temporary file for `/var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db'

sudo, please?

user136984
Oh... Ooops! :D

Who are you?
Who hijacked Toroidal's account?
:P :D

user136984
:D

So? what's the result?
A bunch? Or one?
if one; where?
(so I can update the answer too)

user136984
6:26 PM
There is no output.

(thinking)
sudo find / -iname PartofFilename

user136984
Wait!

How fast is your computer and how big is your HDD?
(this might take a while)

user136984
I know why the other command did not work! :D

OK?

user136984
6:29 PM
I made a typo! :P :D facepalm...

user136984
So, now that I got the name right with the other code I get two results!

Now I definitely know your account was hacked!

user136984
:D

@Toroidal copy-paste the output, please?

Q: Recover encrypted files or folders in Windows using Ubuntu?

Vitor MazucoI have a dual-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04. I want to recover all encrypted files and folders in Windows 7 using Ubuntu, is that possible? I don't want to follow this and this tutorial, I want recovery directly in Ubuntu. Thanks in advanced!

6:31 PM
just copy-paste. just replace your name with smth else

user136984
Ahh... Well... Yes... You see, the file paths are a little bit odd... So I would rather just describe the locations... :D

user136984
One is here: ~/.local/share/fonts/BABYCAKE.TTF

user136984
And the other is where the file is located that installed it.

delete both

user136984
Ok

6:33 PM
updating answer so in another tab.

user136984
Ok.

then do the font rebuild

user136984
@Fabby: Thanks for the help! :)

log out and back on again afterwards!
then test

user136984
Ok

user136984
6:36 PM
Will do! :)

@SmokeDetector wow, getting a bit to close to your laptop...

@RPiAwesomeness @Toroidal: For the future, please...
I don't mind helping you out in the chat room and I will continue to do so,
*but:* please don't post questions first and then bring them to the chat room
Ask the question in the chat room first, get an answer here, **then** post a Q and I'll then A and then both of us get some rep out of it!
:P ;-)
Now back to my stove and cook some food because I'm starving!
(and I get cranky when I'm stark, raving hungry!)
>:)

user136984
@Fabby Ok! :)

@SmokeDetector Can a 10k guy send me a screenie of this? It'll be too good to not read
@Seth Okay. Mailservers are annoying for someone who mainly focuses with LAMP and making Windows games work on Ubuntu.

@Whaaaaaat it was up long enough that the content was cached: webcache.googleusercontent.com/…

someone used google translate
i do have to give +1 to the title though
@RPiAwesomeness Can I come over to take a picture of it?

@RPiAwesomeness Awesome job! Post videos and stuff, glad you made it in!

8:56 PM
Things I don't like about the Mac app store: you can't download large files on anything but a Mac. I'd like to get the Yosemite disk image for installation in VirtualBox. Sadly, the only machine that has access to it is the Mac. And it's connected to a 1 Mbps connection. It's a 5 GB file.
:(

i just walked into the mac store and prepped my install disk
:)

There are places I have access to with 100 Mbps connections. But then I have to pack up the Mac, a monitor, keyboard, etc. and set it up there.

(They thought I was installing a virus or something, oh well. I'm going to take my hackintosh to them to complain about my WiFi, just to see what happens)
Just build a Hackintosh or put it in a VM

I've got an honest-to-goodness Mac.

Also, @NathanOsman OSX 10.10 does not work in Vbox. You have to use a distro.

8:58 PM
I need the disk image in order to run it in a VM within OS X.
@Whaaaaaat What... aw...

yep

That's lame.

Welcome to Apple.

Thanks, Apple.

Apparently they don't like people sharing VHDs.

8:59 PM
Their TOS explicitly allows you to run OS X within a VM on Mac hardware.

well, it doesn't appear to be supported.
also, it's not an ISO. It's an upgrade package only.
(you'd have to extract the main container and do stuff to that, not fun.)

I can't find the Mavericks image anywhere on the Mac app store.

it's gone bro
they want you to run the latest version... "security" and that stuff
it would be there if 10.10 was a paid upgrade, but it's free.

@Mateo That's the cool thing! This is entirely separate from the Road Test, so I could technically still get one from the RoadTest :D

@RPiAwesomeness can you ship me a spare one then?

9:06 PM
@Whaaaaaat ;) You can enter yourself in the RoadTest!

i wanna hackintosh it

lol
Good luck with that one
I got plus 60 repz from that one TTF font removal answer!

@RPiAwesomeness hackintoshing has gotten too eZ for me recently.
Atom CPU? No problem.

I need a challenge!

9:07 PM
It's too bad my hard disk is so weird :P

what, i have to write an essay about why I want one?! nope.

@Whaaaaaat nah, not a full essay, just a short application stating your qualifications and what you'd do with it if selected :)

qualifications: * have made hackintoshes * working with arch

:) You decided to go with Arch then?

reason why i should get one for free: * i wanna turn it into a mac. and home automation maybe.

9:09 PM
+1 for working with Arch.

not yet, but i'm going to try.

@Whaaaaaat Nice.

i need to dd my hard drive first incase arch decides it hates everyone and everything

"hey? is that three weeks worth of hackintosh? LOLNOPE." ~ Arch, 2015.
"oh cool. a windows that doesn't crash every 5 minutes. Why do you need Windows? I'm Arch! DELETED!" ~ Arch, 2015

9:12 PM
Arch has a greatly simplified packaging system.

named after one of the best games ever

What did we end up figuring out about the hackintosh. The partition table type or something was off wasn't it?

it wasn't true GPT, i think.

@NathanOsman You can say that again. What was install again? Was it -S? Or -P? -O perhaps?

9:13 PM
I'm still nervous about the whole repartitioning thing :P

@RPiAwesomeness Nuke the hard drive, and use the built-in OSX Disk Utility, and then use gParted to resize and prep things for Linux.

oh you said packaging system.
Yes, yes it does.
Compared to .debs :P

isn't .deb just a zip which is copied to the drive root? (and manifest files/scripts/etc?)

It's taken me years to really master DEBs.
@Whaaaaaat No, it's much more than that.

Emphasis on the much.

9:15 PM
lolno. i'll stay with ./configure && make && sudo make install
/me looks at Debian Wiki for debfiles/packaging

@Whaaaaaat I'm gonna try two more things before I go all super-sayan-crazy on my hard disk.

/me runs away screaming
you know what, new packaging system definition. ZIP containing three things:

* manifest.txt
* install.sh
* files.zip
the files.zip file just gets extracted to the hard drive root. all files go to their proper places.
install.sh will gen/change configs as necessary, aswellas control the unzipping. it can read from an optional folder called "OPT" in the zip file.
manifest.txt will contain the list of files changed/added with the install of the package, and the expected MD5sums of added files.

@Fabby Hey, I would need your article about FAT/NTFS maybe now for this question. Some guy advices to use NTFS as file system for a second hdd (OP did never mention Win). I commented to use ext4 if no Win is there and else FAT32 for beginners. You might want to leave something too? askubuntu.com/a/583837/367990

brb making definition for this package system.

Looking

9:23 PM
@Whaaaaaat I shrunk the HFS+ partition by 15GB and I'm booting the USB stick again.

@ByteCommander: Accepted answer, "worked like a charm"... If the OP is happy, I'm happy too!

Yeah, but he might not know what he got with NTFS... :(
Especially as I'm not even sure if he has Win on this machine at all

The only thing you can do is convert your comment to an answer and I'll upvote that!
>:)

Phh... no. Too lazy.

(y)

9:25 PM
i'll take the free rep then.
(nope. too damn lazy as well, and it'll practically be a copy)

I'm sure I will find an answer of mine in future that might need an upvote too ;D
Maybe this one? Or could the Q be deleted anyway? askubuntu.com/a/583869/367990

i hate people who have that type of virus paranoia

Well, they are not totally wrong. You ever got something serious?

@ByteCommander worst i got was (i think) Cryptolocker.
however, i intentionally downloaded that.

I can't remember any serious threat on my machines... ??

9:29 PM
Okay. So shrinking the partition didn't work....
Lesse if making the partition in the installer does.

i don't think i ever got a virus.
(except for that PUP adware crap, but not a virus)

But does anyone else also have no scroll bar in firefox on the unanswered page or inside at least some questions?
I just notice and it kind of annoys me!

@ByteCommander I'm fine on FF36 (dev edition)

In chat and on other sites it is there...

Wish I had a small hard drive to install this to :P

9:32 PM
@RPiAwesomeness click that virus paranoia link. totally not a virus

@Whaaaaaat ;)

on another note, my tablet is getting here on Monday
Back to Ubuntu Touch!!

omg
hackintoshing a nexus 7
Hackintosh ALL the things!

9:45 PM
i wish :D

The only thing I ever will do with an apple is to bite it!

actually, installing iOS on an Android device.
@ByteCommander Hackintoshing is actually very fun. Huge challenge, and a really fun slap in the face to Apple.

Sorry, never did that or know nobody who did. But I don't like apple products very much in general.

nor do i
they're the same performance as the low-end alternative to them.
the brand is the money

They are too closed for me, I want products where the user can breathe freely ;D
But in my opinion Microsoft is steering into the same direction, isn't it?

9:49 PM
@ByteCommander everyone, and I mean everyone, is.
even canonical is going that way

Old systems like Win98 and even XP are nice to administrate and tweak, but newer ones...? I don't own one, but I used them at friend's homes, so I have a rough idea of them.

user136984
Well, goodnight everyone! :)

Sleep well!

@ByteCommander XP was an awesome customization platform.

Yep, but also for hackers and viruses, (un)fortunately... ;)
And you can destroy everything with the wrong command...

9:54 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Yeah, by copy-pasting my chat reply! Thanks again!
>:) ;-)

@Fabby :) Well, you never said that I couldn't :) Plus, I just copied the commands. So there! :)

Didn't we have a restore scheduled? [huge grin]
mmmh....
;-)
Good for you man!

Grrr review test again!

60+ rep!

Answer was bad because it was a summary of the accepted answer! Why the heck should I know this???

9:58 PM
Screw the tests! As long as you don't fail too many...
BTW: always try to leave a comment.
If that doesn't work, it's a test (and sneaky)

@ByteCommander I know, I've had that happen to me several times

@chili555: How about Broadcom wired connections?

@Fabby Good trick.

It still doesn't give you the right answer, but at least you know it's a sneaky one...

i take it none of the Ask Ubuntu mods are on?
'cause flags queue from > 2 hr ago aren't being looked at

10:11 PM
Just have somebody in the queue that bought an "Assus K555LN" ;D
Hm... Every time I review an answer I get annoyed:

Somebody in here that has not left a vote already? Comments/answer are also appreciated.
Hey! That chat bot just plopped in between my posts. Rude! ;-)

@ByteCommander it should be smacked

;D if I just could...

@ByteCommander But alas it can't be

10:26 PM
@Fabby Well...not exactly scheduled. But I would like to try.
@Fabby Basically, I have to repartition my hard drive as GPT only. Currently, it's GPT protected by MBR - so OS X refuses to install.
I'd have to repartition the entire drive, including my EFI partition and / Ubuntu partition - so I'd need help making a backup of just those partitions and then restoring it after partitioning as GPT only.
Is that going to be very complicated?

Working on it, @Fabby

Is this an advertising/spam answer? askubuntu.com/a/583900/367990 Look at the link. You have to log in to get download info. Looks looks proprietary and maybe even paid. I'm not sure if it is for Ubuntu at all...

@ByteCommander Look at the question, first, then take it with a grain of salt, then look at it further

@ByteCommander Yeah

i agree it's bad

10:33 PM
Smells spammy to me.

So a spam flag? I thought so but was not sure...

@ByteCommander Yup. I did that.

@ByteCommander i did so too

So now we're at least three ;)

Bad @Fabby. Don't you know you shouldn't delete answers unless they're totally horrible?
:)

10:37 PM
a pair of questions that should probably be marked as duplicates: http://askubuntu.com/questions/479226/arrow-keys-and-delete-key-not-working
http://askubuntu.com/questions/305808/delete-and-arrow-keys-not-working
it's a bit of a mess because the older question has no answer (but is answered in the comments). the newer question has an answer, but it just references the comment on the older question

Hrm.
Maybe we can get the mods to merge them.

Flagged this for migration to Meta.AU: askubuntu.com/q/584005/367990
Hm, I changed my mind. You can also let that Q stay here, as my A to it just earned me 35 rep. It would fade away into the land of dreams when the Q moves to Meta, wouldn't it?
:-( Too late... Bye +35...
