2:07 PM
Yay :) good grades and I can sleep :)
Good night everyone
12:07AM here

@Committingtoachallenge Congrats! You might live around Pacific island I presumed

@Venus Australia :)

Soon I'll go to the city only for buying books, a lot of books (especially math books). I'm curious to see what the Romanian authors released on the market this year.

City where @Chris'ssis? Don't you live in Bucharest?

@Venus No, I live in a small village at the moment. I mean I plan to go to Timisoara city that is not far from me.

2:20 PM
Let me Google it first

@Venus It's a very beautiful city, I was born there (and lived there for a while) ...

@Chris'ssis For what I've seen. It's a beautiful city. It looks like middle age city & somehow it looks very romantic

@Venus Yeah, and very romantic too.

I wish my boyfriend & I could visit there someday

@Venus You won't regret!:-)

2:25 PM
Yes, provided I don't see any vampires there :D

Huy
2:36 PM
@Venus: Did you ask yet?

@Huy Not yet. I need a help for that & @WillHunting is unwilling to help me. How about you? :D

Huy
@Venus: How could I help you?

@Huy Could you help me to arrange sentences into a good question about this topic? You know, I'm not good at English

Huy
@Venus: Did you write anything yet?

@Huy I only wrote this:

My roommate says, "love can be found anywhere, even where you least expect it." So, I wonder are there users on MSE falling in love or getting married so far?

Huy
2:43 PM
@Venus: I think that's a good question already.

@Huy Really? it's not quite lengthy

Huy
@Venus: A question doesn't need to be lengthy in order to be good.

@Huy So, should I post this one? What is the title then?

Huy
@Venus: I don't know if you should post it. I think it is an interesting question but I don't know whether it would be suited for the MSE meta, I don't exactly know the rules.

@Huy I don't know too, but I think MSE meta is intended to a question about MSE, not math

2:48 PM
@Venus Just post it, it's a very good question.

Wait for a moment. Let me think it first. I'll let you know if I already post it

Huy
@Venus: Are you interested in online love stories in general or specifically MSE?

Hi folks

Huy
Hello, @pourjour.

Just online love story in MSE

2:59 PM
${ d }\overrightarrow { r } \wedge { \quad d }\overrightarrow { l } =\delta ^2S$
is that correct or it's just : $${ d }\overrightarrow { r } \wedge { \quad d }\overrightarrow { l } =\overrightarrow{\delta S}$$
I forgot to put an arrow over $\overrightarrow{\delta ^2S}$

@MikeMiller Some number theorist explained me (roughly) why representation theory of Gal(\bar Q/Q) is important in number theory. If we let this Galois group act on elliptic curves over C then the torsion elements are permuted. The group of m-torision elements E[m] is \cong Z/mZ \oplus Z/mZ as the ell curve considered over C is just a torus and the action of the galois group induces a representation Gal(\bar Q/Q) \to Aut(Z/mZ \oplus Z/mZ) (which in turn is isomorphic to GL_2(F_m)).
Now, why in the wonders does the homomorphism $Gal(\overline{\Bbb Q}/\Bbb Q) \to Aut(\Bbb Z/m\Bbb Z \oplus \Bbb Z/m\Bbb Z)$ resemble the monodromy representation $\pi_1(X, x_0) \to Aut(p^{-1}(x_0))$ so much?

@Huy @Chris'ssis What are the tags I should use?

I dunno. Does it? Doesn't look much like it to me.

@MikeMiller First, the fundamental group is analogous to the absolute galois group and indeed the connection can be rigorously done by etale fundamental groups (which i know nothing of). And the automorphism group on the right you can already see. Perhaps we can choose the covering map $p$ appropriately to make the analogy more obvious?
The choice of basepoint messes stuff up.

@Venus discussion (at least)

3:08 PM
@Balarka I don't know. I'm not going to think much about it.

:( i should talk about it with anon the algebraist.
@anon

Do you think that the abc conjecture,if proven right,can yield a stronger version of Fermat's Last Theorem?

Anonymous
Oops...I mean stronger than previously thought

sure @Ashwin

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen Can you elaborate a bit?

3:13 PM
@Chris'ssis @WillHunting @Huy I've posted

Q: Are there users on MSE falling in love or getting married so far?

VenusMy roommate says, "love can be found anywhere, even where you least expect it." So, I wonder are there users on MSE falling in love or getting married so far after interacting each other here? The interaction here is not merely collaboration in publishing a paper or journal, but something deeper ...

abc conjecture (the K = 1 \epsilon = 1) version implies fermats last theorem, so abc conjecture is your stronger version of FLT.

Anonymous
@Venus I get distracted by some beautiful girls here at least!

it all depends on what you mean by "stronger version" you see :P

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen I actually wanted something more stronger than that

Anonymous
K=1,epsilon=1 only implies that there are finite solutions to the equation

3:16 PM
@AshwinGokhale With whom?

Anonymous
It must be easy to guess!

Anonymous
@Venus She sure is very much intelligent than I am!

@AshwinGokhale I don't know who and I can't guess it too

Anonymous
@Venus LOL I can't tell you who that is!

There're lots of female users here
@AshwinGokhale Cleo?? :D

Anonymous
3:19 PM
@Venus There are actually N girls who distract me

It's already known that there are only finitely many nontrivial integer solutions to $x^a+y^b=z^c$ for fixed $(a,b,c)$ with $1/a+1/b+1/c<2$. This is due, I think, to Granville. The real question is whether there are finitely many nontrivial solutions as we let $(a,b,c)$ vary.

Anonymous
N is greater that 1

You don't need abc for that.
abc might prove that it does have finitely many solutions as $(a,b,c)$ varies; I don't know. That would be nice.

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen Can you refer me to some literature?

heuristics <-- @Ashwin
@AshwinGokhale Granville's paper is online I guess

Anonymous
3:22 PM
@Venus Do you have the same problem?

@BalarkaSen $abc$ does not imply Fermat. It implies that Fermat has finitely many solutions. I don't even know if it does so effectively (ie the rest could hypothetically be done with a computer search, ignoring Wiles)

@MikeMiller yeah i reckon that

@AshwinGokhale What problem?

Anonymous
@MikeMiller Making sure that there are no smaller solution,it's difficult

Anonymous
3:24 PM
@Venus Distractions

20s-age crisis?

I doubt it is effective, @Balarka. Most theorems in the field aren't. I think pretty much everythinf effective comes from Baker's Theorem.

@UserX Yes. Have you upvoted?
@AshwinGokhale No, I think.

Anonymous
Is anyone here doing Tripos?

Of course, you're not going to be able to do better for all $(a,b,c)$ with $1/a+1/b+1/c<2$ than "there are finitely many nontrivial solns $(x,y,z,a,b,c)$, since plenty of solutions actually exist. I guess you could subscribe to Beal's conjecture that all solutions have one of the exponents equal to two. But I don't think people are really thinking about that as much.
I guess nobody's reading this.

Anonymous
3:31 PM
@MikeMiller who is very good at arithmetic geometry?

Quite a few people. You just want names of people in the field? :P

Anonymous
yes

I'm sure Matt Emerton has posted in detail about this in the past, if you search a bit. There are certainly lists of arithmetic geometry conferences; go to those pages and look at who attends.

Anonymous
Are you working with TT?

V. Kumar Murty is an arithmetic geometer, whom I met with a few month ago.

3:34 PM
Thanks

No.

I GTG. Good Luck!

oh btw @Mike when i asked my prof about that cayley graph and analogy with bundle thing he referred to this

@Venus They (no matter who they are) brought you already in the area of negative integers ... :-)

and it's now on hold

3:40 PM
That's fine, @Balarka. My point was that you shouldn't tell other people to prove things that you can't prove, and also aren't true as stated (with the standard definition of eg 'bundle'). The analogy is good, it's just not a literal fiber bundle.

Yeah I got the point.

@Chris'ssis And it has been closed. It's quite shocking users here are so sensitive considering mostly (maybe 99%) are men. :D

I was linking the paper to you just so you might be interested @Mike

@Venus true, true ... :-)

Huy
@Venus: I don't think it has anything to do with people being sensitive.

3:45 PM
@Huy You can't relate it. Boys are often saying this to bad mood girls: "Are you having period?"
@Chris'ssis And it has been closed. It's quite shocking users here are so sensitive considering mostly (maybe 99%) are men. :D
Or sort of questions

Huy
@Venus: I don't really understand what one thing has to do with the other, also the male people I interact with over here would never ask a question like that to a female.

@Huy What a nice boy... :-)
2

Huy
@Venus: You're not the first woman who thinks I'm nice. Thanks.

@Huy I'm glad I'm not the first one because the question I asked would be our story then, haha
2

Huy
@Venus: I'm confused.

3:51 PM
@Venus :-)))))

The smack messages were better than the newly starred once.

Huy
@Chris'sis: Tell her to stop speaking in your secret women language.

sigh

@Chris'ssis You know, boys! :D

@Huy Well, it's time for jogging, no time for anything else. :-)

Huy
3:53 PM
@Chris'sis: Enjoy!
It's too cold over here for jogging already. =(

@Chris'ssis Have fun!

@Huy I'll be there for half an hour, it's important for my health.
@Venus Thanks :-)

Huy
@Chris'sis: Physical activity is important for everyone's health, glad you do something for yours!

@Chris'ssis No, it's time for the dentist... BBL

@robjohn OK :-)

3:56 PM
@Chris'ssis It is raining here (finally!) so when I get back I will put a fire in the fireplace.

@robjohn and you like when it's raining ... It rained here last night, but now it stopped.

Huy
Tell me a bit about yourself, @Venus. Where are you from?

@Huy Why did you want to know? :-)

Huy
@Venus: I'm bored because I'm too lazy to work but I'm sick of playing PS4.

@Huy I've never heard kind of excuse from the boy who asks me such question :-)

Huy
4:00 PM
@Venus: That makes me feel so special!

@Huy No, you're not!

Huy
@Venus: That makes me feel so sad. :-(((

@Huy Ok then, I'm from Sarawak, Malaysia

Huy
I see. Are you still in school or at university or working? @Venus

@Huy I'm a freshman college

Huy
4:04 PM
@Venus: Studying maths, I suppose?

Nope. Plan to major in engineering

Huy
@Venus: Okay. Over here, students usually decide what subject they major in at the beginning of their studies. Is that different in your country?

I haven't decided yet. I must wait for choosing my major until my second year here
@Huy Only in my college

You guys may be interested in reading this

Huy
@Venus: Okay. And do you already have an idea what kind of engineering that would be? Electrical? Mechanical?

@Huy Between electrical or chemical

Huy
@Venus: Cool. Have you been enjoying your studies so far?

Yup! Lots of friends here support each other

Huy
Glad to hear you like it!

@ZachSaucier Lots of pictures, it takes time to reload your site
@Huy How about you?

4:10 PM
? it's not my site?

@Huy How it's like to be a foreigner student there?

Huy
@Venus: I'm a teacher at high school and doing my Master's degree in maths right now. I'm not actually a foreigner student, I grew up in Switzerland - if you mean that.

@ZachSaucier I thought you. I don't know much about advance geometry
@Huy Really? I thought you're still a student like me

Huy
@Venus: I am, I am still doing my Master's degree. :P

@Huy I thought you're a Vietnamese too

Huy
4:13 PM
@Venus: My parents grew up in Vietnam, but I was born in Switzerland.

@Huy I mean an undergrad student
@Huy What make your parent live in Switzerland?

Huy
@Venus: My father went to university in Germany, my mother was a refugee from the Vietnam war.
@Venus: They met in Germany, later moved to Switzerland because my father was offered a great job over here.

@Huy I see. I hate a war or a conflict.

Huy
@Venus: So what brings you to MSE?

@Huy You can see my bio
@Huy I have not a good education here

Huy
4:21 PM
@Venus: Don't you think it will change at university?

@Huy I hope so. That's why I learn from here

Huy
Okay. I hope you will be able to learn a lot. I did too. :)

@Huy Thank you ^^

@Huy It's totally banned here

Huy
4:30 PM
@Venus: Really? That is news to me.
@Venus: What are the reasons?

@Huy Give a warning for that link

Huy
@Alizter: Why? It's SFW.

@Huy You must have known it. This is Malaysia

Huy
@Venus: I'm not gonna lie, I don't know much about Malaysia.

@Huy Search on Google about majority people here

What you studying?

4:36 PM
Still take general courses in my college

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: Why do you think it wasn't a good move?

That's a college policy here

Anonymous
I can't concentrate on Natural Sciences or on Mathematics

Anonymous
not very much

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: Why not?

Anonymous
4:38 PM
@Huy I do enjoy Engineering though

Anonymous
I was addicted to gaming for some years so I couldn't get admitted to top math schools

Anonymous
I am doing fine now

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: I was addicted too, but fortunately, over here, there are no special requirements to be admitted at top universities.

@Venus Some branches of engineering demand more time than others.So,choose your branch carefully!

4:41 PM
@AshwinGokhale: I live in Switzerland.

@AshwinGokhale: Now you have two. :P

@AshwinGokhale I'll do, thanks

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: I'm always a bit confused by the expression "grad school". Does that mean MSc or PhD?

Anonymous
Perhaps PhS

*PhD

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: Okay, then I probably won't know her.

4:43 PM
@venus There are Malaysians in my school too!

@Huy What if she was your neighbor>?

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: None of my neighbours are students from a different country.

@AshwinGokhale: I'm doing my MSc right now, is that grad school?

Anonymous
yes

Huy
Then, yes.

What topics are you learning right now?

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: Theoretically, I'm studying differential geometry and general relativity, but I didn't start looking at the material yet.

where did you do your undergraduate studies?

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: At the ETHZ, too.

Have you read it?

Huy
No, I haven't. I don't read many books anymore.

Anonymous
?

Huy
4:54 PM
Time is limited and books take up a lot of time, unfortunately.

Anonymous
You get those ETH study materials?

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: What do you mean by that?

Anonymous
What's the source of knowledge,sir?

Anonymous
I believe you are doing it wrong Huy

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: Some professors put their lecture notes online, which is my first source of knowledge. If not, I usually hope some other students have been attending the lectures such that I can copy their handwritten notes.

Anonymous
4:58 PM
@Huy You can use the time you spend online to read some amazing books

Huy
@AshwinGokhale: I'm not actually just spending time online. I'm watching some TV shows simultaneously, because I need a bit of time to cool down from work.

Anonymous
I actually get disappointed if I go online for my knowledge of math is very less
