Computed 1100771 values with 0 sumdiff and -38.530% Base 7.764ms -> Fast  4.773ms
Pimgd code:
        final int q = day;
        final boolean isJanOrFeb = month < 3;
        final int m = month + (isJanOrFeb ? 12 : 0) + 1;
        final int calcyear = year - (isJanOrFeb ? 1 : 0);
        final int K = calcyear % 100;
        final int J = calcyear / 100;

        int offset = q;
        offset += (13 * m) / 5;
        offset += K + (K / 4);
        offset += (J * 5) + (J / 4);

        return ((offset + 5) % 7) + 1;
'Fast' code:
        final int isJanOrFeb = month < 3 ? 1 : 0; //(8 - ((month - 1) >> 1)) >> 3;
        final int m = month + isJanOrFeb * 12 + 1;
        final int calcyear = year - isJanOrFeb;
        final int K = calcyear % 100;
        final int J = calcyear / 100;

        return ((day + (13 * m) / 5 + K + (K >> 2) + J + (J << 2) + (J >> 2) + 5) % 7) + 1;
'Base' code is as per my question. I have removed validation of inputs from all versions.

Inlining is better for performance, but I thought you wanted it readable

I thought I had it readable until you decided it was not fast enough ;-)

I just thought that all the comments were a distraction =D

I get that... but the comments don't make it slower... interesting, what does make it slower is the q variable.
The ternaty on the isJanOrFeb is the other one... by calculating it as a 1/0 int value, then doing the multiplcation, makes a difference too.

I wanted to do that so bad but you can't cast bool to int
and my mind basically stopped there

12:36 PM
Regardless, your version is consistently >25% faster, and mine is about 40% faster... and 15% faster than yours.... These numbers are more than I was expecting... I was figuring there may be a % or two in there, not as much as 40%.
40% in my line of work is huge.

There's one thing more I'm interested in...
but I don't know if there's something that does that

You can bookmark conversations in chat, I would have to be on my desktop to explain how to do it though

division that returns both result and remainder

You can do an integer division, then multiplcation, instead of the modulo... let me try it...
        final int J = calcyear / 100;
        final int K = calcyear - (100 * J);
only 30% faster than baseline with that.
(instead of 40%)

The q variable looked like it only assigned it's value to offset?

12:40 PM
You sort of have to understand the computation to understand why the int offset = q.

Lol I figured something like that, sorry for butting in.

No problem, it's not that hard when you get your head around it... have you seen the question?

No
Ping me with it. Will check it out when I get to work

Q: proper usage of "using" statement in base64 encode method - C#

DenizI used the example on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.security.cryptography.tobase64transform%28v=vs.110%29.aspx,but with little changes in order to write a base64 encoder method. I have a few points about the code, 1) I would like to use "using" statement, but I do not want to us...

12:46 PM
I tried looking at (13 * m) / 5...
I still have the notepad open
13 * 4 = 52 / 5 = 10 % 7 = 3
13 * 5 = 65 / 5 = 13 % 7 = 6
13 * 6 = 78 / 5 = 15 % 7 = 1
13 * 7 = 91 / 5 = 18 % 7 = 4
13 * 8 = 104 / 5 = 20 % 7 = 6
13 * 9 = 117 / 5 = 23 % 7 = 2
13 * 10 = 130 / 5 = 26 % 7 = 5
13 * 11 = 143 / 5 = 28 % 7 = 0
13 * 12 = 156 / 5 = 31 % 7 = 3
13 * 13 = 169 / 5 = 33 % 7 = 5
13 * 14 = 182 / 5 = 36 % 7 = 1
13 * 15 = 195 / 5 = 39 % 7 = 4
but I didn't find anything
well, I didn't find any patterns
probably cause 13 and 5 are prime

A lookup table will help there.... hmmm

oh but that's interesting because then you can drop the whole +12 and +1

Exactly....
Not exactly a 'math based' solution then, but....

1 = 1
2 = 4
3 = 3
4 = 6
5 = 1
6 = 4
7 = 6
8 = 2
9 = 5
10 = 0
11 = 3
12 = 5

Q: Please downvote this question having nonsense mistakes

Robert MallowI made this question which later I recognized the mistakes but wasn't allowed to change them because of a weird policy: Increment a text field value the mistakes are I used the wrong selector and the answer wrongly based on that wrong selector too. now does this make sense for you? sense for the...

Q: Optimize code for generating very big special numbers

kingsdebWhile solving a problem from Hacker rank though easy one, i wrote this big program. Not sure if recursion is applicable and hold good but to me it looked like it doesn't. However when i run the program i see my code executed fairly well. Here is problem statement: Print the largest decent number...

@StackExchange What was the point of deleting that question? (@Jamal)

It was mostly done out of frustration (hence the title), and it may not be beneficial to keep around.

4:54 PM
? Is that close to ?

@Jamal Beneficial to whom?

@SimonAndréForsberg Mostly to the OP, probably if he was unable to speak on chat. rolfl also agreed that it was no longer needed.

Q: thread-safe IDisposable

Rezo MegrelidzeI've implemented a dummy class that implements IDisposable. public class Toilet : IDisposable { object mutex = new object(); byte[] waste = new byte[10000000]; ~Toilet() { Dispose(); } public void Dispose() { lock(mutex){ Console.Write...

@Jamal well, if you moderators made him understand why it is the way it is in another way, then I agree that it's not needed anymore. If you didn't however, I think it will be seen by the OP as "censoring" / "moderator-policing" which is definitely not what we want.

He did, and he replied positively, while also requesting an account disassociation that was granted.

5:00 PM
Agreed, this is what the OP wants...
And, I would not expect a similar situation fro him again... and, I even think he may be back.

As for joining chat, he may have to make the rep again, as the disassociation likely took away that rep.

Q: Mixing Watir::Browser into RSpec

NakilonIn my previous Watir question I was making a module with session_FF accepting a block. Now I want to make the same but via RSpec. Here is my try: require "rspec" require "watir" module Session_FF def method_missing m, *args, &block @browser.send m, *args, &block end def element *args ...

Alright, I'm glad you got it under control.
@Marc-Andre and @janos, the Cardshifter project currently have 42 open issues. There is really plenty of things to do! (Hint, hint)

5:17 PM
I'll check the 0.4 release! And verify issues!

@Marc-Andre I'll try to work on some documentation to help new developers get started

Hey @mods. Someone want to respond to this?
I'm not sure why a "long answer" would be required. The code is self-documenting — K. Alan Bates 3 hours ago

We have again? I thought I saw it get removed once or twice before.

It's a silver badge kind of day. XP

Q: Refactoring image loading/manipulation class

glampertI have this Image class that I've been using for some time now on personal projects and games I eventually write. It was written in C++98 style and it is now starting to show its age. Over time, I added a few C++11 elements here and there, but I think it is now time for a major refactoring. Follo...

@SimonAndréForsberg That would help a bit, but the best way is to start coding something!

@Marc-Andre that's the spirit :)
@bazola managed to understand quite a bit about how I have created the server simply by going through the code and adding some documentation to it, I'm sure you'll be able to understand it as well @Marc-Andre.
And if you don't, I'm just a ping away ;)

I hope! I'll probably try to get up early tomorrow and work on playing/reading a bit on the game (and grind in Wow of Minecraft at the same time :P )

@Marc-Andre feel free to join us in the TCG Creation room at any time!

5:34 PM
I do check the room from time to time :D

Nice :)
Just very recently I have started adding support for real Spells to the game. Many many fun spells and things are possible now :)
in TCG Creation, 1 hour ago, by Simon André Forsberg
@Phrancis Another effect that can be implemented now is "Creatures with 5 or more attack may not attack"

I hope the gui has been enhance a bit ^^ :D

@Marc-Andre depends on how the GUI looked last time you saw it...

Red rectangle with yellow and black border for actions. Nothing really readable on the card itself :P

this is how it looks now

5:46 PM
much better OMG

We also have a deck builder...

5:59 PM
Nice ! Can't wait to try it! Look waaaay more complex than the one I tried (0.2 release I think)

Q: Should the .NET interface tags be synonymized?

JamalWe currently have two .NET interface tags (as far as I can see): ienumerable (8 questions) idisposable (1 question) They are both language-specific and seem to relate to more general things. The former is about enumeration and the latter is about resource-management. We do seem to have tags...

Lehandro ZharosI've got a slight problem with my program. Simply put, what I do is this: 1. Choose the option to "Add a new Student record". 2. A: Mongodb making efficient and healthy db call

Q: How to specify dimensions to image that's served through JavaScript? (EV SSL logo)

user165672Speed optimization tools ask that all image sizes be specified, to speed up rendering. Q: File Exists Script Task for SQL Server SSIS

RubberDuckI have an SSIS package for SQL Server 2008. In this package, I need to verify that a file exists. If the file does not exist, I need to fail the package before using the built in "For each file loop" task. It's a pretty simple bit of code, but it has a huge smell. I'm catching Exception. I think...

Q: Any pitfalls in changing the prototype of the String object?

PhillipI'd like to change the word substr to "left": String.prototype.left = function(n) { return this.substr(0,n) } Is this ok, or should I just get over it? Next, I'm going to write a .right(), a .mid(), a .val() and a .int()

@SimonAndréForsberg FGITW!

@janos I thought it was better to get there before you had a chance too ;)

good thinking ;-)

isn't that cheating?

@janos I am often hesitant to posting more than one answer per question, but I felt that in this case it might be better with two. I just merged my two answers though.

@Phrancis Against your mail or against AI Fighter?

@JeroenVannevel Do you think i should go through your answers and randomly downvote them for no reason? — brso05 40 secs ago
God forbid you actually put an effort in your answer

Flagged

7:31 PM
It's disheartening how they'd rather quickly post an incomplete answer and then complain about it instead of fixing their answer

Well, it is SO after all.

flagged too
but it's frustrating to get downvotes without explanation

I was writing my comment when his complaint appeared which is why I instantly added it

maybe the problem is obvious to the downvoter but not to me

Usually I don't comment, precisely for this reason
3

7:33 PM
it would be better to comment first and downvote after

I figured I'd put him on his way

lulz
@VighaneshGursale He should be kicked of SO. He has no business downvoting for no reason. — brso05 3 mins ago
People on the internetz.....

Uh... kicked off? How does that work exactly?

down with all those bastard Trusted Users!
5
but fair's fair, you had your share in this one @JeroenVannevel

7:55 PM
@janos Maybe I could've been nicer. Which I would have been, if he wouldn't have complained so fast I couldn't even get my comment in in time
I'll shout at them first and downvote after in the future

people still have Vista Machines on our Network, screwed up my stuff!

it's nothing shocking from a low-rep user
I think you should be more patient

what is a fun exception to throw during my testing?
I hate that pinned message, mostly because I can't star it!
7

If you're going to demand a comment from a downvoter, at least hear them out first instead of just saying that they're wrong and then lashing out. If someone stops commenting on their downvotes because of this reason, well, tough luck.
5

@Malachi now you can hate another one

8:04 PM
@Malachi If you pin something yourself, then it gets an autostar

I can't pin here

@skiwi lol autostar???
4

@skiwi I think it was @rolfl that pinned the earlier one

Is it just me, or is the front page really active today?

@RubberDuck Yep, if you pin it's also starred

8:14 PM
@Malachi - not sure which message you mean, but you can never star your own messages. As an owner, or mod, you can pin any message, including your own, and that does count as a star too. So, for example, I can pin, but not star this, and the first star will make it +2
2
But, that's a crappy message to pin, so depinning now.

@Malachi maybe you can throw a null pointer exception, those sound fun!!

Q: C++ Malware Program

user56806I've made a simple program that moves the mouse and do other silly stuff ;) I want you to look at it and tell me what can I do better/less space and also what can I add? I want to prank my friends ^^ This is what I've done so far: #include <cstdio> #include <windows.h> #include <conio.h> #include <

@CaptainObvious Interesting. Can that be on topic?
I mean, I suppose so. So long as it "works as intended" and OP wants it to be good code... Need to read it.
Ya know, it's not obfuscated or anything. Looks good @CaptainObvious.
