9:00 PM
anyway, it's not just a few :)

and somehow people are capable of playing 400 games without ever learning that chasing a guy through the enemy's jungle without any vision is a bad idea :'(

hahahah
yeah it's amazing what people don't know after that many games AND are up in silver
how the hell did they get up there?

I wouldn't consider silver "up"

took me 1.5 years to get to silver
so it's "up" for me :)

Could have been bad luck with your team

9:05 PM
over hundreds of games?
the fact that I was stuck B4 for 1.5 years, took two lessons and was S5 about 3 months later is telling
I was just not pulling my weight

Ok so maybe you were bad :P

I was
unless it's all cooincidence, which is possible
I didn't feel like I was bad, but after changing just a few behaviors I started moving up really fast

the important distinction between being wrong and discovering that you are wrong: being wrong feels like being right

:D
Dunning-Kruger
Icy and I had a moron last night who, when we told him to fuck off, said he gets that 4 times a day and it doesn't bother him
I said he got that treatment all the time because of his behavior, not because everyone else is a moron
bounced off him of course

it happens

9:09 PM
I think the real problem I had was that I was not horrible, but I wasn't good either.

Pip
So... I have to wear a costume for a halloween themed robotics community outreach event... thinking about making my own version of this:

lame

Pip
any suggestions on how to make it better? I can't use the zero@fucksgiven part because.... you know..... team event

don't wear a cop-out costume
better to wear no costume at all

I think the biggest problem with becoming good at LoL is that mistakes are usually very subtle, but their effects are obvious. That makes for a lot of people calling you an idiot, when you probably are an idiot, but none of them can explain why or help you at all.

9:10 PM
just tell them your costume is that of a homicidal maniac: that they look just like everyone else.

Pip
@SethBattin have to wear a costume of some sort, kind of ironic since I'm on the programming team

@IcyDefiance :D
Go as Richard Stallman
:D

The problem I have with the statement that was made is that, while I haven no data to back up this claim, you guys make it sound like you have to be really good to get out of bronze

and complain at everyone about how it's GNU/Linux

on the other hand, for a while I resolved to tell people what to change instead of calling them idiots, but no one wanted any part of that either.

9:11 PM
Like... where can you slack and sitll get out?

so now I just point at their deaths and go "you fed"

@SpartanDonut well, you don't have to be "really good" to get out of bronze. But there is definitely a threshold of skill below which you will never get out

Pip
@Almo hm... maybe....

played with one guy who had over 1000 games logged, and was still B4 or B3
Again, it only took two one-hour lessons for me to learn enough to get out (granted after having hundreds of games experience so the knowledge given made sense)

@Pip you should do something along these lines:
hmmm... chat.se doesn't onebox pintrest. not surprised

Pip
9:13 PM
hm

@SpartanDonut you have to be competant to get out of bronze. or lucky. if you play trist all the time and use her W mostly offensively, you probably won't escape bronze.

Pip
you have to put it on it's one line for it to try to onebox

@SethBattin while I believe your statement it's worth noting chat doesn't one box anything with other text in the same message

nothin

Pip
9:14 PM
huh

I said I believed you :P

Pip
idk then
:)

@IcyDefiance but where is the line? I don't think its at "YOLO without vision"

well, you can make a crappy tshirt cosutme if you want, but you'll just feel ashamed all evening
go all out

@SpartanDonut if that's their only mistake, then no, that's not the line. but it is one indicator of being well below that line.
another indicator is when you don't turret hug after your lane gets 2 kills in the first 10 minutes

9:15 PM
So let me rephrase this here
What's the difference between bronze and silver? Silver and gold? Gold and platinum? etc.

I guess "no respect for gold advantage" sums up the majority of bronze mistakes

Pip
@SethBattin idk what I'm doing yet, have to make something

Can you remove that please

Pip
uh, nope

9:17 PM
there. robot costume. your work will never ask you to wear a costume ever again

some of us have this page open at work

Pip
28 secs ago, by SpartanDonut
Can you remove that please

halloween is a good holiday for setting that standard

// Hello3.cs
// arguments: A B C D
using System;

public class Hello3
{
   public static void Main(string[] args)
   {
      Console.WriteLine("Hello, World!");
      Console.WriteLine("You entered the following {0} command line arguments:",
         args.Length );
      for (int i=0; i < args.Length; i++)
      {
         Console.WriteLine("{0}", args[i]);
      }
   }
}
Crazy
So that's how you write hello world in C#

Pip
cool

9:18 PM
And this is the output
Hello, World!
You entered the following 4 command line arguments:
A
B
C
D
Very interesting

when I was still bronze, I would sit still as the creeps came up and shoot at them. Now I move backward between each shot, so it is always finding the max range I can be away from the enemies and still shoot the creeps

Pip
yeah, it is

I'd say "no respect for gold advantage" is the primary problem with bronze players. "no tactics" is the primary problem for silver players. I've only been to silver so far so I can't say anything about the higher tiers.

when I feel outclassed in my lane, I no longer try to get kills; I tower hug since statistically, our other lanes are better than me and I should wait for them to get an advantage.

controlling your champion is just something you learn gradually over time, not entirely associated with tier

9:19 PM
you're asking good questions about it though todders

I just don't like picking on a person for one thing and wondering how he made it "up" into silver
Because I'm sure there is at least one thing said person could pick on you for too if you let it show

Pip
huh, idk

it's kind of like picking on a programmer for a redundant if statement and wondering how he's kept his job for so long

Pip
lol

it's not really proof of anything, but it's a big indicator

9:21 PM
critiquing code is easier than writing it, so it goes with most things.

Pip
btw, anyone here use the ternary operator often? I used a single-nested one in robotics, and was wondering how useful they were

of what? that he sucks and doesn't belong in challenger league? sure
bad people picking on bad people is silly
we're all just awful at the game for different reasons

@SpartanDonut it's his attitude that amazed me, not his play

@Almo this I'll buy

the mid took his red mid game

9:22 PM
@Pip Works in moderation, imo

and he said "I'm going afk. heimer stole my red"

hey now, I carry almost every game I get in, at least when the other lanes don't feed. how dare you call me bad. >:(

we said that's dumb

i only use the ternary operator in long chains without parenthesis in php

he said "he needs to apologize"
and started to do dumb things to make us lose

9:22 PM
@IcyDefiance we're in silver. we're bad. If you say otherwise you're in denial.

Pip
@SethBattin lol

oh I think that was a different example, @Almo. spartan was talking about my statement about people chasing through the enemy's jungle.

oh right

Pip
I used one like this: bool ? opt1 : (bool ? op2 : null)

i'll admit I'm still bad :)

9:23 PM
That Lee was objectively a prick. There's no way to argue against that.

Lee wouldn't agree with that statement

yes because he wasn't being objective :P

it was all hiemer's fault for taking his red

YEC people don't agree with evolution but they're objectively wrong too

they disagree with a lot more than just evolution! :o

9:24 PM
right, like homosexuality, and fun

@Pip if it's readable, its fine. and if it's not php, the parens are redundant (they should be)

Pip
it's C++

lol I strongly recommend against ever chaining ternary operators
2

me too

yah

9:26 PM
I won't recommend against the operator entirely like Almo does.
just chaining them always ends up badly

if you have to look at the line more than once to know exactly what it does, then you have code that's harder to maintain

it's a code smell

yeah

at minimum

But I have it on good authority (someone who told Almo off) that Almo is wrong and ternaries are fantastic

9:27 PM
probably me XD

hahaha
no it was someone else

Civ: Beyond Earth has been getting some awesome reviews. 9/10 on Polygon, 87/100 on PCGamer.

whoo I'm not the only one pushing the cause!
I've never tried any of civ games. The whole type of game that it is never struck me as interesting. But if this one is getting great reviews maybe I'll try it just to see what I'm missing.

I will inevitably get it... but I'm rather enjoying endless legends when I get the urge for strategy
Also! now that I've seen a lot of Game of Thrones I have a better description for Crusader Kings 2 when trying to explain it. "It's all of the politics and war aspects of Game of Thrones without the fantasy elements"

I'm not sure about Endless Legend. Everything I do/build in that game kinda feels messy, if that makes sense.

9:30 PM
You would have to provide an example
I quite like how it works

I guess it's more that I'm just bad at it. I can never get my empire in a stable state, have a lot of trouble with the minor factions, and there's always too much to do at the same time.
Crusader Kings 2 (and the other games in the series) is awesome though. :D

Interesting. I find the early game to be lacking things to do and it picks up and it gets exciting mid to late game
Just not enough resources for everything so I end up hitting next turn for quite some time
once I get past that and have my second city going I'm usually feeling pretty good
Maybe I should prioritize a second settler asap... hmmmmm
Don't know if there would be enough gold income to support that. I'll have to try it

Once I have my second city everything starts to become messy. That's when I really start unlocking more buildings to build / resources to harvest / units to build etc.

Funny how we have completely opposite opinions on the different stages of the game :P

And my main army will inevitably get beaten by an unlucky combination of minor factions around that time.

9:36 PM
One thing I know for certain. I like war much better in Endless Legend than the Civ games

I can see a lot of potential, it's just that nothing ever really works out how I want it to. Even playing on easy didn't solve it.

War in EL (for me) is all about strategically holding points on the map. Civ it's who has the resources for the better army

Oh, I like war better in Civ. :P
Man, we're just complete opposites. For me, war is more strategic in Civ than in EL.

We probably shouldn't take game suggestions from each other... ever.

We do both like Paradox's grand strategies though... ;)

9:39 PM
But let me guess... you like EU4 better than CK2

I don't know. I like CK2 better in single player, but EU4 in multiplayer.

I've not done any multplayer but I could definitely understand that perspective
Maybe
Actually
With the right group of people CK2 could be crazy fun multiplayer
The stories you could create

Hmm, maybe. I admit I've barely played CK2 multiplayer.

pfft you're all wrong and portal is the best game ever

Nobody asked you, Patrice!

9:46 PM
I asked me!

time to drive! later folks

Portal is pretty excellent
I might not be on for LoL tonight
boardgaming
maybe around 10:30 we'll see
(I'm EST)

Pip
night
Portal is nice :)

Q: RAID5 array Ready for Rebuild

TrevorWI've inherited administration of a server with a RAID 5 array. We have a damaged database on the array that is just over half the allocated size, so makes recovery impossible. I recently changed the spare disk in bay 25 to be part of the array (would give adequate space for DB recovery), the rebu...

Still have to use Unreal though.

11:55 PM
where do I magically get rigged characters with animations?
