4:00 PM
I would suggest blending the edges of those blocks slightly with the background to prevent that look

Jon
yeah
the front is not lighting with the background yet
trees, water and tiles
I wanna add a slight coloration

yeah, that'd probably work
it's just that the backgrounds look nice but the edges are the sharpest thing in the picture, so I see them more than everything else

Jon
yeah, I guess I could smooth out the edges when I zoom out
It is important for the gameworld to have the square edges though

smoothing isn't as necessary as having proper colors
there seems to be a sharp border of some kind, around those tiles
appears to be black
doesn't show up anywhere else so it doesn't seem like an image scaling side effect
must be a bug/effect(?) in rendering

Jon
you mean on the edge of all the blocks?

4:06 PM
yes

Jon
Yeah, there is a line that is purposely there

doesn't work well with this distance
how does it look zoomed in?

Jon
hold up

user4704
@jhocking Excellent point (re: "makes sense").

Jon
i want to zoom the view out as much as possible

user4704
4:12 PM
I think I'm going to buy this retina iMac.

Jon
I think it looks pretty good in the day time.

the edge looks a bit weird here, too
shouldn't it be lighter, not darker?

Jon
I like it.. when you take pieces of dirt out, it carves into the soil
looks cool
earlyl prototype:

too many dark outlines
for my taste, at least
everything appears to be burned

user4704
I see the repetition in the textures more than the lines, personally.

user4704
4:26 PM
But it looks good.

Jon
Some critique I can play around with.. this one in particular, I don't have the time for it
Not sure how I could tone down the edges

I'd say "tone up" :D

Jon
What do you mean?

make them brighter than the rest of the texture

Jon
then you have to account for the edges that are touching dirt
those lines are part of the sprite
I'd have to have another layer, for outer-edges

user4704
amusing

@Jon all that sounds very complex
I was thinking more along the lines of color swaps

user4704
"instead I found a bag of gummi bears that purported to contain extra juice. Extra juicy gummi bears! Who was I to say no?"

user4704
Those would be the "juicy" Haribo gummi bears, which are excellent.

@JoshPetrie ugh, those in particular give me headache
no idea what's put into those ruthless things

user4704
4:33 PM
Because of the sugar content or the firmness? They are firmer than other varieties of gummi bears in the US, at least, and I've found most people don't like that. Makes their jaw hurt.

user4704
Of course you could also not eat the entire bag, that woudl help.

user4704
But I'm incapable of doing that.

my jaw can handle it
it's got something to do with the recipe

user4704
Made with corn syrup in the US. Which is evil.

I'm in the EU, shouldn't be that

user4704
4:34 PM
Although I'm not sure if it's the high-fructose kind or not.

but perhaps is

user4704
Dunno then.

in that case, I utterly despise corn syrup
it sucks 'cause that's one major reason less to visit the US, I've heard that every sweet edible thing there is made with that crap

user4704
Eh.

user4704
Corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup are different.

4:39 PM
in any case, I've found these to be much better: anarco.ae/Kent.html
they're somewhat hard to find, though

user4704
Both are "bad" in the sense that they are refined sweeteners, but the latter undergoes a chemical conversion to turn most of it into fructose which is generally considered worse than the glucose that regular corn syrup has.

user4704
But yes, everythign in the US is sweetened with one or the other usually, and not actual sugar. :(

user4704
I've had those in Germany, but never found them here.

:(

user4704
Found some good ones in Iceland too, that I haven't found here.

Jon
4:41 PM
i posted that so you could read the reviews btw

user4704
Wow.

user4704
(I don't eat "sugar free" stuff because I think the substitutes are, in general, horrible for you or taste like death or both.)

user4704
But those reviews are hilarious.

Jon
5:10 PM
this is what I do when I idle

5:21 PM
I also idle often around town
And when I do, I look just like that. Just in my underpants. Also when it's -20C

Jon
Pretty ugly as I didn't set colors yet -- but water hooked up to lighting
before
I need to lighten it up significantly I thinks...

5:45 PM
@JoshPetrie I think "most" is misleading, as the actual mix is around 55%/45% or something.
minor point though :)

@snake5 You've heard wrong. The cheapest thing is nearly always made with "that crap" and worse. But that's not the only option. I personally won't consume corn syrup whatsoever but I still manage to eat too much sweets for my own good.

Jon
i love steak and chicken
if i could eat steak and chicken all the time, i'd do it

Hi folks

Hey there

@Almo that's known as HFCS-55, but actually HFCS-90 (as in 90%) is common also

5:59 PM
I was hoping Seth would be around

@SethBattin ping

Wikipedia seems to say that the HFCS-55 is actually made from mixing HFCS-42 and HFCS-90 together.

If he doesn't show up you can always ping him and it will show up in his inbox and you can have a back and forth exchange over a longer period of time

:]
but I had to bail at the time
I've set up some unit tests and it looks like the implementation isn't quite right

Jon
loop-tee-loop

Jon
thanks

@Jon I was going to see if you had posted an progress pics. Didn't even have to scroll. :)

Jon
i have a twitter now
i started posting there.. kinda nice since it creates the album for me

@Jon Trippy magic eye
@Jon link?

@Jon Are you posting development on indiedb?
Or no

Jon
nope

That's where I track all the games I follow.
Ah.
You should. :)

Jon
yeah I probably should.
i'm really eager to finish off this atmospheric crap
I wanna get back into gameplay

this is such a fresh experience in a game

Jon
that looks awesome

6:27 PM
@Jon Aside from some shitty interface problems and a lack of real controller support, it is.

Jon
well i'm gonna get drunk i think.. this day has been long
i'm not able to get the indiedb email confirmation
What the hellllll? Didn't they just make one with ashton ketchup?

@Jon Yes. It was terrible.

Jon
and it never ended.

Christian Bale is a great actor, so hopefully this one won't be as bad.

I didn't see it but I think the Jobs with Ash Ketchum was more of a drama than a biopic wasn't it?

Jon
6:36 PM
i watched it with my g/f... we stopped it.. felt like it was never going to end

Ass Katsup is a plank.

Jon
funny or die did a way better job

Agreed.

Jon
seriously though
its good, watch it.

hey folks

Jon
6:38 PM
its on netflix

I've seen it. It's much better than jOBS.
Hey @SethBattin :]

i was pinged

I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

I pinged you in the private chat, @SethBattin
And someone here did too

ah, i think i clicked on the other one
should we go over there to that other room?

6:40 PM
If you're free to chat?

um...less so than last time
but i can chime in a bit, sure

Just chat here then
That way if someone else can help they will

/agree

:]
Well, I had this method for working out if two line segments are parallel: gist.github.com/CaptainRedmuff/74ba8773f320b0665681
But after hooking up some unit tests, it's failing for pretty much all cases

Jon
you should make the lines parallel and perpendicular at the same time

6:41 PM
oh, hahaha
that explains why the dependent functions were failing...maybe

@CaptainRedmuff what lang?

@MickLH ah right. :)

I've split them up now, Seth. So they're not chained together.
@AttackingHobo C# using Unity
I was trying to remember why we wrote it that way by going through the chat

@CaptainRedmuff coulnd't you just normalize two points on each line and see if the results are the same?

so I could figure out why it's not working
@AttackingHobo I don't know. Geometry isn't my strongest skill.

6:44 PM
normalize the lines and if the vectors are equal, you got parallel lines.

well, i know we talked about having a 3-step process

Yes. Parallel -> Same line segment -> Overlapping.

@AttackingHobo how do you tell that's they're equal?

if(vector1 == vector 2) ?

hahahaha

6:45 PM
The line segment method works, as far as I can tell.

nooooooo
they're 3 floating point numbers

I saw no obvious problem with that code posted earlier

@CaptainRedmuff well, i think the reason we put the function calls inside each other was that each step was a precondition for the next step being valid

ah ok. yeah Float inacuracies will get you there

but sinec you had to call all three functions anyway, it made the interface cleaner for the 3rd step to call the 2nd, and the 2nd to call the first
so then the 3rd step checks its own precondition
@AttackingHobo regardless, dot product essentially checks equality anyway, because pythagorus only works out if they are equal

Q: Unity: parallel vectors and cross product, how to compare vectors

HeisenbugI read this post explaining a method to understand if the angle between 2 given vectors and the normal to the plane described by them, is clockwise or anticlockwise: public static AngleDir GetAngleDirection(Vector3 beginDir, Vector3 endDir, Vector3 upDir) { Vector3 cross = Vector3.Cross(begi...

@SethBattin Yeah. That makes sense.
I split them up for now for the purpose of testing them individually.

sounds fine

Mainly because the parallel one was failing, so the others were failing too

@AttackingHobo i still think comparing to epsilon is a mistake, because the inaccuracy isn't necessarily as small as floating point precision

@SethBattin if its bigger than FP precision then it wouldn't be parallel

6:49 PM
hmmm
i must write scripts to test that notion
i hypothesize that it is not so

it would be nearly parallel, and if you keep extending, they will eventually intersect

@CaptainRedmuff Is it failing with false positives, or false negatives?

false negatives
I've plotted some lines which on paper I know to be parallel
but the test cases are failing
I'm wondering if it's the way the normal is created for an edge

Debug the normals!

i.e.: normals pointing away from each other, rather than towards

6:52 PM
That shouldn't matter

yeah, the math.abs should take care of that

You're taking the absolute value of the dot product, so -1 or 1 should both count
I'd like to see what the normalized vectors are on a failing case though

heh

you know what.

that's a helluva expertise request :)

6:54 PM
look again at the gist and tell me whats wrong ;]
it's blatantly obvious once you spot it

oh lol
that's a good one
no fixed-width font will save you from that
maybe non-fixed would, for that matter
sorry, no more spoilers

You'd think that it would warn you about such things

totally

Xcode would throw a fit

lol

6:56 PM
i'm surprised it compiles

I'm not overly familiar with MonoDevelop however

@ton.yeung yeah, the knowledge your are asking for is how to avoid the problems that blizzard entertainment could not

@ton.yeung I would investigate how EVE's system of PLEX works.

well, eve's system is straightforward
you don't trade anything for real money
but you can buy a subscription in game

@SethBattin you can buy PLEX and sell it for in-game money, which is the point here

6:58 PM
@CaptainRedmuff I knew it was this... haha I even looked for it but just missed it the first time

@IcyDefiance plex is used to pay for your subscription, right?

Well, my tests are passing so thats a bonus.

@ton.yeung I think ArcheAge has a similar deal, and maybe wildstar?

Sorry to have made such a n00b mistake

6:58 PM
I genuinely though that the compiler would have picked that up

we all make noob mistakes

@SethBattin yes, but it can also be sold in-game for other people to pay for their subscription. it also costs $20, as opposed to the subscription that can't be sold in-game which costs $15

Xcode can be so brutal sometimes, i've just kinda gotten used to it

@IcyDefiance that's exactly what i mean

6:59 PM
lightmap renderer is more or less working, just need to finish it up

there's an item that can be traded in game that has real-world value
but only one

and interestingly, these things can be lost or stolen

@ton.yeung aww, shucks
