Thanks everyone... just stopping by on my way back to the hospital. We'll be there until tomorrow looks like

JNK
12:22 PM
@AaronBertrand congrats
2 years is a good spacing

12:33 PM
Yeah I thought that would be ideal, thanks
I'll leave you guys with this, more later

Wake up admins

JNK
?

This one has asked three questions on same topic
Ouch, and it shows "development manager"

@JNK ? ?
@ShawnMelton Are you stalking him :O

It is hard to talk to anyone without a name...

@ShawnMelton Nope, it's not

1:25 PM
feeling confused today @JNK? :D

I was wondering if DBA are any aware of Strongly Typed DS

1:38 PM
Most RDBMS have statically typed columns so does that qualify as a "Strong Typed DS"?

JNK
Yeah tables are strongly typed DS

In Context of programming, anyway, this question may or may not make sense to you -

Q: Stored Procedure Insert multiple rows

Customized NameI have a table, FruitCrateID FruitID Now FruitID and FruitCrateID have a many-to-many relationship. I have a strongly typed dataset I need to create add and update stored procedure. Now I can use foreach to add FruitID and FruitCrateID to database but there will be several calls for example, ...

table valued parameter

1:54 PM
thanks, just going through answer now
even though it's a many to many relationship table, but if I use FruitCrateID as main id and then add FruitIDs as a XML data column

@AaronBertrand Congratulations!

2:20 PM
@AaronBertrand Congratulations!

2:30 PM
@AaronBertrand congratulations!

@Kermit why didn't you capitalized the C?
you had to ruin it

@Lamak He runs on unix now.

ah, that explains it

so i tickled his chin and i gave him a pinch

@ypercube it's a curse

@swasheck I tried. He's question banned over there.

aw crap.

And thanks everyone!

@AaronBertrand i didnt realize #2 was on the way. you kept that one pretty downlow (or i'm just not very observant)

Please, rather than ask programming questions on a database site, please fix your account issues on Stack Overflow or maybe ask on Programmers. — Aaron Bertrand ♦ 1 min ago

2:55 PM
boo, someone unaccepted an answer of mine on DBA :(

@bluefeet What was the answer.

Oh how weird.

If position a recruiter has been talking to me about for the last few months does not work out...think I am going to quit and go work at McDonald's.

There isn't even like a newly accepted answer.

2:58 PM
Ha ha ha that sounds wise
I mean certainly less stress

Q: Synonym: table-partitioning -> partitioning

Paul Whitetable-partitioning - 38 questions partitioning - 247 questions. Most questions tagged table-partitioning are also tagged partitioning. The current wiki excerpt for partitioning is: "Splitting a database table into multiple segments for performance or manageability." Proposing we create a ...

Mac and dons has DBA's

Oh, and cool note on the job posting he sent me included this section:
Preferred candidates would also meet the following criteria:
• Involvement with the MSSQL Server Community; membership in PASS, active in forums or newsgroups.
• Certification is a plus; MCTS, MCITP, MVP
• Previous experience in either a teaching or volunteer role.
First one I have seen include "MVP" as a certification

@ShawnMelton That gig had better pay a ton of money.

MVP is not a certification!

3:01 PM
@PaulWhite so just to be clear, you want the main tag to be partitioning or table-partitioning?

@Zane Oh that is why my interest is so high, it is a State government contract. Last I heard it is good bit of money possible, my interest is just having full health benefits again.

@PaulWhite 'tis an award, right?

@swasheck yes, it is an award.

Nothing but hacks and scam artists in the program. You seen the list? Sheesh

You don't have to be technical at all. Though, like MCM, most are.
Probably about the same ratio, but more MVPs than MCMs overall, so the non-tech MVPs are more common.

3:03 PM
It's more like a secret club.

I might have said "many" rather than "most" :)
But yeah, what Aaron said.

@billinkc I actually checked the list out and don't even know who some of them are...

@ShawnMelton I was just being ornery given that I knew there were at least 2 in the room

Yeah, "most" might have been a bit strong. But it is certainly more than half. :-)

@billinkc Two hacks and scam artists? ;c)

3:05 PM
Having gone through the nomination process, it certainly appears to be community focused award

@ShawnMelton I don't think I could ever take a government gig.

Probably more than half. I don't know half of them. LOL.

@billinkc Yeah figured it...but there actually was two or three I had never seen before, "online" at least but I don't scour the Internet looking for them either

Heh true

@PaulWhite so ... MVP awards aside, i have a question. this is probably covered in a blog post somewhere but i've not found it so far. when a query needs more memory than it's been granted, what happens? does it always spill, or can it request more and a broker decides if it can grant more?

3:06 PM
I did my SQL saturday where's my award!

@swasheck Memory grant is acquired before execution begins. It cannot be expanded after execution starts (except for index building). So, the scenario doesn't arise. A query that needs more memory than it has reserved spills.

@Zane well I was a state employee for 5 years and will not take that again. The recruiter with the company has kept up with me over the last 4 or 5 years on his own accord, which has impressed me. As well I have done military contracts since 2008 so I am more accustomed to that type of work.

@PaulWhite cool. that's what i thought. it always spills.

I've spoken at a total of 3 SQL Saturdays ever.

All 3 in NZ?

3:09 PM
Boston, Adelaide, and Porirua.

Hmmm, needs more Kansas City in that set

I'm vegetarian. KFC doesn't appeal.

Just curious on the MVP stuff, once awarded do you ever see who actually voted for you?

@ShawnMelton You never know anything.

Most of them are difficult for me to get to.

3:10 PM
That's what I thought

@PaulWhite bummer

I don't even know if a vote is involved.

Well nomination I guess.

@ShawnMelton Don't know. I guess.

@ShawnMelton the first rule of MVP is you dont know anything about MVP

3:11 PM
@PaulWhite How do you feel about frigid cold??

@Zane Take a wild guess :)
@billinkc As soon as matter transporters are available, I'm there.

@PaulWhite are you available this weekend for Denver SQL Sat?

@PaulWhite We actually have an excellent caterer for vegetarians, edenalley.com

we're nice and warm right now

Whether you're really one or not :P

3:12 PM
@ShawnMelton at one point it was strictly about direct contribution to the SQL Server newsgroups (and Compuserve before that).

Who wouldn't want to spend thousands of dollars out of pocket to fly out of their tropical paradise to speak in a frozen tundra?

"Compuserver"?? Before my time :)

Then blogging came about, then the MSDN forums, and Stack Overflow

I tried to be active on MSDN forums but the constant wrongly "marked as answer" stuff got annoying to me

There used to be kind of a vote. When I first joined the SQL Server group we used to get asked for our opinions on community members who were being considered. So we actually had some influence and it was a little more like Fight Club than it is today
@ShawnMelton yeah that is terrible - and it is much easier to give yourself points without having to create sock puppets

3:14 PM
@ShawnMelton i find the multiple duplicate posts to be extremely distracting

@swasheck Got a business-class and 5-star budget with expenses and speaking fee?

Agreed, keeping the chronological and copying the "answer(s)" to the top is stupid.

@PaulWhite i'm sure someone here does. not me, though.
i'm a peon. a gamma.

@PaulWhite I can apply the Heap rate of problem solving to speaking fee, right?

@billinkc In principle yes.

3:16 PM
@PaulWhite I could pick you up in my shitbox dodge. The couch is open and I'm pretty sure I've even got some vegetables in the freezer.
:)

@Zane Very tempting. Let me check my diary and get back to you.

@Zane chicken isnt a vegetable. it's just not red meat.

@PaulWhite I have a friend who says he's a humanitarian.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells What the heck's one of those?

@swasheck Hops are a vegetable right?

3:17 PM
MSDN Forums were awful even before they metro'd modernized the UI.

@PaulWhite Not sure really. I didn't ask.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Probably very sensible!

@Zane i hope so.

@billinkc Looks pretty, but I'm not all that hardcore. I eat fish enthusiastically, for example.

@Zane Wellington isn't tropical, as such. The top end of the North Island is kinda subtropical but Tropical isn't an adjective I've ever seen applied to Wellington.
Q: Why is it so windy in Wellington?
A: 'cause Auckland sucks!
Very old Cantabrian Auckland bashing joke.

3:21 PM
@PaulWhite Well, plenty of catfish and trout to be had if you want local-ish fish

A: Cause Auckland sucks and Christchurch blows.
@billinkc Fresh is always best.

@billinkc hahahahahahah. catfish.

@Zane Also NZ has large variations in climate across surprisingly short distances.

@swasheck But Pizza, however, is a vegetable.

It's not all that unusual to see 10C difference either side of a hill, for example.

3:22 PM
@PaulWhite Four seasons in one day, as it were. Just like the song.

And Paraparaumu has very different conditions from Wellington most days.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yeah, exactly.

Mind you, the hot air generated from the beehive probably helps.

Like a song stolen by the Aussies.

@PaulWhite Wow the religious naming of that town is a little on the nose.
@PaulWhite cool.

@Zane Is it?

3:23 PM
@PaulWhite Neil Finn was from NZ but, like most NZ talent, he had to go overseas to do anything with it.

Yep. Any excuse to bring up pavlova/underarm bowling.

@PaulWhite That was an underhanded trick.

groan

@swasheck It's a fine fish. Better than carp or gar (which you're unlikely to see on any but the most umm urban of eateries)

3:25 PM
Finally looked up "rimshot" in the Urban Dictionary after years of not understanding it at all. Thought it might have been a basketball thing.

@billinkc i have a great gar recipe. broil on a wood plank with salt, pepper, green and red peppers, basil, onions for 30 minutes. scrape off the fish and eat the plank.

@PaulWhite Urban dictionary might not be the best place to do that...

I would have thought you might some quite off-colour definitions of rimshot from urbandictionary.com

@billinkc To slimey. I'll stick to my panfish and walleye.

@Zane No walleye here but yes to panfish. Good fighters too

3:27 PM
@billinkc not to mention you can hit them all day long.
Getting a few walleye can take all day. You find yourself a good panfish spot and you can pull them in left and right. Lots of fun.

I have a strong urge to leave work and spend the day fishing

@billinkc Times almost up.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells It's ok so long as you stop at #5

I didn't get out at all this year. Pretty bummed about that.

Suddenly hungry for indian/malaysian food.

3:32 PM
@PaulWhite I'll take your word for that.

I get out 2 nights for a total of maybe 30 minutes. Oh and the canoe trip but that doesn't count, too many children thrashing about
Ok and time to work

@PaulWhite Wrong city, but there's a curry place on Dominion road that's pretty good (at least it used to be when I lived there). Also Helen Clarke's favourite curry outfit.
No idea where to find decent curry in Wellington.

TBH I think they'd have trouble even spelling it in Christchurch.

@PaulWhite But why? I mean, meat pies!

3:35 PM
@MikeFal NZ cuisine in a nutshell.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells What kind of curry? I had pretty good Indian when I was there back in May.

@MikeFal Good question. Now I feel like curry too.

Went to a nice place with Simon Righarts and Mark. Forget the name.

I know a handful of decent places in London, but that's probably a bit far to just pop out.
@SimonRigharts is probably asleep. This is pretty nocturnal, even by your standards Paul.

For me, the hilarious thing for me was sitting down for indian and ordering vindaloo. I was warned 3 times that it was super spicy.
My response: "Yeah. That's why I ordered it."

3:37 PM
@MikeFal It'll be nerfed for local tastes.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yeah but my wife is broken so the only time I get to SQL is at night.

@PaulWhite What's wrong with her?

@MikeFal You missed the Hell Dragon Pizza by a few weeks, which is a shame.

Well she married Paul

waka waka waka

@AaronBertrand rimshot

3:38 PM
@PaulWhite Next time I'm out, I totally want to do pizza roulette

@MikeFal Hell Pizza is pretty good. They've even got a couple of outlets in London now.

yesterday, by Paul White
@ypercube Not yet time for sleep. My wife had an operation on her knee several weeks ago, so the days are set aside for looking after her. If I want to do some SQL work, well that starts about 11pm :)
2
@AaronBertrand Starred.

@PaulWhite Oh, dear.

:-)
Hope recovery is going well.

Send her our best wishes.

3:40 PM
We should probably pin that comment. Just so @PaulWhite isn't continually copying and pasting.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Thanks!
@MikeFal Sadly it's not available often. Current promo pizza is wild boar.

@COTW's evaluation of data modelling tools:
It was actually easier to bring the model back out into a SQL script and work on it there.

Free pizza and free undies was a great offer.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells So true eh.

JNK
@PaulWhite They put pure capsicum on the pizza?
That's just silly

@PaulWhite I had some naga sauce (called Megadeath) that was rated at 550k SHU. It was pretty aggressive. Not sure I could be arsed with the eat-a-ghost-pepper-on-youtube challenge.

3:43 PM
@PaulWhite gonna replace those old ones with all the scovilles discharged into them

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Whoa. I like a bit of Huffman's but 550k is way beyond my ambitions.
@swasheck Probably burns a hole.
Ha.

@PaulWhite When I was working in Lichfield I found a small cafe run by a foodie. She had some of this stuff and volunteered me as the guinea pig. We thought we'd start off light - just a teaspoon in a batch of baked beans on toast.

Oh yeah, how'd that go?

That came out the other end at speed.

LOL!

3:45 PM
I sat down on my burning ring of fire - Johnny Cash after eating Megadeath sauce.
I'm not really sure what you'd use that sauce for unless you were a pretty hard-core chilli nut - to the point of being de-sensitised to the capsiacin.
However, they ran a challenge using two spoons in your baked beans. I think you got them free if you could eat it all. When they asked if I wanted to enter I politely declined.

You should send @MikeFal a bottle.

@PaulWhite I am unfamiliar with Huffman's Hot sauce.

@PaulWhite You can order it over the web.

@MikeFal It's probably too sedate for you.

Let's be clear, I'm not out to prove the length of my spicy food.....stamina. I just like a good spicy flavor and giggle at NZ's relative weak sauce when it comes to spice.
Pun very much intended.

3:49 PM
@MikeFal i heard that width is more important

@swasheck It's not the heat, it's how you use it.

For example, I have no desire to challenge thai hot.

@MikeFal Fair enough.

@MikeFal it's worth it. until exit.

I like my indian food "kiwi hot", which is one down from "indian hot" here.

JNK
3:50 PM
Thai hot stuff is great because of all the flavors though

@MikeFal I had a friend from Thailand when I was at university. She once had a bag of chillies that were too hot for me to eat. She reckoned she wasn't even the main chilli nut in her family.

@PaulWhite Huffman's sounds tasty. Definitely would like to try it.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Thai people are crazy when it comes to spice.

@MikeFal Mail me your address and I'll send you a bottle.
Or next time you're over. I forget you Xero.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells a high school friend's family hosted a thai exchange student whom i befriended. she made us a meal before she left. it was awesome.

Probably easier/less weird to hand it over in person.

3:53 PM
@PaulWhite or you can smuggle it in for summit

@swasheck That's a good idea.
@MikeFal You're coming to PASS Summit, right?

Max, this might have been the best explanation if the user was like system, network, sqlserver agent. However in this case, if you login once as 'Max' it will show that many records for you. I don't think there's anyway anyone can login from the same machine, to the same instance at the same time. — Harp 8 hours ago
As I clearly show in my updated answer above, it is very likely that any well-written client-side application may well open multiple connections to SQL Server, exhibiting the precise behavior you are seeing. — Max Vernon 29 secs ago
ZINGGGGG

@MaxVernon Glad you answered that question yet?

@PaulWhite oh yeah. Super, uber glad. If I get any other negative feedback from that guy, I'm just going to delete it.

@PaulWhite I am indeed. Xero's paying for it. :)

3:57 PM
@MikeFal Ok. So I'll pack a bottle of Huffman's for you, ok?

@PaulWhite That would be awesome. Anything I can get you from my neck of the woods? I could probably find some green chile sauce if you like that sort of thing.

@MikeFal Sounds awesome! Thanks!

JNK
@MikeFal rar

there are less than 7 Databases on the instance. I'm yet to run a trace on the login event. — Harp 8 hours ago
I guess I should pay attention to the obvious lack of desire the OP has for actually doing work.

Actually I think that question should be closed as tip of the iceberg

4:03 PM
See if they'll open a hole in the firewall and pass you some credentials

@billinkc Wait till they hear my rate.

Make it very cost effective and then accidentally all the tables

does anyone understand this?

Q: sql server date issue

user2462433I have a select statement that when run on the live production server, returns mm-dd-yyyy regardless of what I do. this only happens though when selecting the date from an another aliased select. Simplified (as my sql is quite long):- select name,age,dob from tblone as tbltemp1 in this select...

@swasheck I think he wants the select of that column to be on another format, sigh

+1 sigh

Have you thought about storing your dates as decimals

I'd put money on that date being stored in varchar format

@billinkc yes. if only to torture those who come after me

It's freaking SSRS applying the default formatting

Is there a VtC option that includes a slap around the face with a wet fish?

Q: How to use dot42 for HTML5 android programing

majid.ghorbanjannatI am trying to code in C# with DOT42. How do I navigate to an html inside my Assets folder. I have achieved the same wit Eclipse in java with the following Code: Uncaught Error: SECURITY_ERR: DOM Exception 18

@billinkc i dunno.. but they give private registration for free

@JNK i dont get it

@Kermit aw, thanks

6:28 PM
:17704036, @Kermit It's only for US residents for now, I think.

@Kermit Are you able to host your own webserver? I can't tell from the FAQ

Ugh! Zynga uses vertica. They shouldn't advertise that.

Vertica allows them to pirate games more quickly than other scum sucking app developers

@Zane you can't escape vertica
@billinkc i dunno, i'm not a googler

@billinkc They can quickly trend what games are popular and get a team on cloning it faster than ever. Thanks to Vertica!

6:35 PM
@Zane you should be on the sales team

@Zane what do you want to do with it?

@Kermit I see you can still be funny:-)

@bluefeet Well it's definitely low quality but I'm not sure it fits a close reason.

@Lamak just because i'm soft doesn't mean i'm not funny

@Zane low quality means it should be deleted immediately - I'd say "unclear what you're asking"

6:38 PM
I'm not so sure, your funniness was highly correlated with your snarkiness

@Lamak i need to see that on a chart

@bluefeet Thanks

@Kermit too much work

Ugh. The review queue is a sad place that I don't like to be.

@Zane that's just a small piece of what I see every day

Q: how to direct the out put of a SQL query to pane instead of a text file

doglinWhat is the setting for out putting the query result to pane, instead of text file. I set output to text file a long time ago. But I forgot how to turn it back. Please advise. Thanksa

7:07 PM
@Kermit I'm guessing they hit the button on the menu to results to text

@bluefeet it's a terrible question

I have client's AG replica that includes databases that were suspended, and show last sent time to be more than a week. Is there possibility resuming data movement will have impact on anything specific that I should wait until off hours to re-enable?

It's a good thing OP can't see the name I gave this image file.
It's moron.png

He's in SSMS.
I'd bet money on it.
@bluefeet There edited for more instructions.

@Lamak Shouldn't it be N'ForeignGibberish'?

@Lamak Seems suitable.

7:34 PM
@PaulWhite I was hoping you would answer that Q.

@ypercube me too
@Zane maybe :-)

JNK
@PaulWhite nice answer on the COUNT(DISTINCT) in a window by the way

@ypercube I nearly didn't and just VtC'd as iceberg. My answer is largely based on your comments with a graphic :)
Feel free to edit the query if you understand the requirements better.

@PaulWhite yeah. I guess they need to provide much more detail for a good answer.

Classic @PaulWhite quote:

better?

Much! LOL

@PaulWhite I've added what I think the OP's query does. No idea how more complex the plan will be - but surely more rows updated.

@ypercube I added a graphic. Thanks!
I guess our comments can be removed now.
Sleep time.

Good god. How am I back to having this group by argument again...
It's the same stored proc.
Every time I make a small change to this proc I have to have an argument about how Group By isn't bad. I thought I killed this damn policy already.
