@ypercube They have to roll a dice, right?

3 hours later…
8:28 AM
Morning all

8:49 AM
@ypercube I got a fair way into writing a Python ORM at one point, although it uses old (pre-2.3?) style metaclasses so it won't run on modern versions of Python.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Nice. We're using sqlalchemy at the moment. Not the ORM so much, mainly the core module.

@ypercube It used introspection to intercept instance variable access using a variant of the Borg pattern where the object's __dict__ was replaced by a proxy for the underlying database row cache. I even found a use for multiple inheritance to make a mixin for propogating events to the model object classes. It also kept track of the order in which changes were made so it could flush units of work (a fowler-ism FWIW) to the database in correct order (e.g.. parent table inserts before child).
I got dragged off it onto another project before I had finished the DB query generation layer, though.
Maybe I should re-write it using new style metaclasses and finish it in my copious free time.

Do we have a canonical question/answer for "default order of tables"?

Q: Mysql - MyISAM Default order

lourdhWe are using Mysql V5.6. We have a MyISAM table. when we open the table, the records will be displayed in some order instead of primary key order. Even when selecting the records will not be retrieved in primary key order. I am not sure on what basis mysql is displaying the records. Is there any...

9:24 AM
@James Properly indented code gives you an at-a-glance view of the structure. It's not just fluff.

10:03 AM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yep, I can reason about whether the code is doing the right thing more quickly when it's more legible. Unsurprisingly.

10:15 AM
@ypercube The accepted answer to this question (first in Related for me) seems to suggest that MyISAM tables do have a default order.

11:21 AM
@AndriyM I'm not sure if that is correct - and even if that answer talks about MyISAM or temp tables or both.

12:01 PM
Weird. The Connect website is actually fast today.

Morning, @bluefeet !

@MaxVernon how's your google domain invite ?

@Kermit I'm hoping to get a chance to use it today. Thanks, by the way!

@MaxVernon you're welcome. If i'm ever on the street I expect you to support me and my family for this favor.

@Kermit lol, I somehow doubt that will ever be the case!

1:34 PM
@MaxVernon i do have pretty good job security

what is the significance of the tags listed at the top of the right-hand column in Chat?

Good afternoon, @ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells
@JNK ahhhhh.

JNK
@MaxVernon we can set it to whatever, typically it's to give a basic idea of the room's subject matter

1:37 PM
@JNK right. Makes sense. I wasn't aware a room could be tagged - but now I know!

@JNK Which is why of various sorts makes an appearance from time to time.

I'm getting close to 10k, I can just about smell it.

@MaxVernon Go edit some tag blurbs if you want a bit of extra rep.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells lol, my "editing-for-rep" days are pretty much over, I think.
although I guess it wouldn't hurt to look for some bad ones
:-)
<--- rep whore?

@MaxVernon We did a binge back around 2012 of tidying up the first few pages of the dba.se tag wiki. The order has moved since then, so a bit of janitorial work wouldn't go amiss. Also, there aren't actually that many 10k users on dba.se, so more users with idiot squashing permissions wouldn't go amiss.

1:41 PM
@MaxVernon I'll go upvote all your answers, trigger the serial upvote scripts and then all the votes will be reversed

@MaxVernon I think tag wiki suggestions are "paid" till you get 20k.
Or so I remember

I just ordered the page by newest, and see - I'm thinking that one maybe a little too specific. I can't imagine it helping describe a question.

@MaxVernon Take a look at the questions with the tag and see if they need re-tagging.

@bluefeet Thanks! That would be fun.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells There is only one question, but I'll look at it.

@MaxVernon not for me, @JNK could suspend me for voting irregularities

1:44 PM
@MaxVernon We only have 18 users with 10k rep now, so getting your rep over the line would make a material difference.

@bluefeet yah, I'm certain he'd be highly inclined to do that. :-)

2:01 PM
There @maxvernon, have some rep.

thanks, @MikeFal

Awwww....I should have done the Core tag. I has a sad.

@MikeFal Feel free to switch it up!

RiccardoWhere could I ask help to build a quite complex query?

@MaxVernon Regarding your tag edit: dba.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/31344
SUBSTRING is a function, isn't it?

sure is. I was attempting to stay away from SQL Server specifics, although I should not have used the word "keyword".
@ypercube I replaced the wording, so is in the edit review queue once more.

It's probably a function in all DBMS - although it may have different name in some.

@ypercube thanks for the clarification!

Oracle calls it SUBSTR for exmaple

how do you answer this? I'm tempted to close the question as "opinion based"
Yes, I understand that is the point but things don't always work as advertised. I always look for the pros and cons of anything to assure that they work the way people say that they should. All I'm looking for are people like you to support the fact that these problems are not typical or don't even exist and that mirroring does improve up-time. — Joe 7 mins ago

Holy shit. Rent is cheap in Kansas City.
@billinkc That would be more of a cut than just going back to Valorem.

6:20 PM
Rent was cheap in Rolla, MO. We had a 4 bedroom duplex, 1 full bath, 2 half baths for 450 a month. That's 112.50 a person. It was an eye opener expecting similar pricing when I moved out after college. I think our 3 bedroom house was 900 something a month, but we a had a pool so it was a good bachelor's pad
@Zane That'd put me back at 2007 levels

The 3 of us are renting(a rather large) house for like 1700 and it's a steal here.

My sphincter puckered up at that price. Sheesh. I could pay the mortgage on damn near 3 places for that

@billinkc It's a huge house.
We've had 5 adults and a child live there quite comfortably.

@Zane that's 'spensive
My mortgage is $1100 for a 4 bed/2 bath/2 car garage

We also have a 2 car garage.

Q: SQL 2014 change from 2008

JohnZI have a piece of code that works on SQL Server 2008 without any issue, but when I try to run it on SQL 2014 Management studio, it doesn't work correctly. What it is suppose to do is take "actual_date" value (2014-09-01 00:00:00.000) and put the "begin_time" at (2014-09-01 19:00:00.000) which it...

What is the point of all of these converts to strings? — Aaron Bertrand 32 secs ago
^^ to drive you nuts
so generic question for y'all
if you have a function to split a string - would you rather call that function once per row or 3 times per row? :)

Date and datetime data types don't want to be converted to strings, and forcing them to be so is considered a form of abuse. — Zane 22 secs ago
@bluefeet 3, more functions = more better

@bluefeet why would you call it more than once per row?
Different delimiters, JSON strings, etc.?

If calling it once was great then surely calling it again will be greater... Right?

This looks fun too:
> CROSS JOIN personnel p
And this

6:41 PM
@AaronBertrand not exactly sure yet. We've got a string that is :2:45:78: that needs to be split to get each row and then do something with each one. I've written a version that splits this once, and someone wrote a different version that parses the same string 3 times to get the same result.

> ctual_date between Cast(@dtBeginTour as varchar(40)) and Cast(@dtEndTour as varchar(40))
@bluefeet Is yours an inline TVF?

To suggest that query is ugly would be a bit of an understatement.

@AaronBertrand yes, we both use the same function to split. I just call mine once

@bluefeet you appear to be the winner

@AaronBertrand thanks for confirming :D

6:43 PM
@bluefeet did they explain why they call it multiple times? Are they arguing that their way is better?

that ugly string is a hierarchy that we have to move up/down to select the correct level based on x number of rules

@bluefeet can't the hierarchy itself be computed and/or relational?

@bluefeet :(

@AaronBertrand no real discussion yet. I've just pointed out that calling that more than once is a concern
@AaronBertrand oh I wish. That will be an eventual thing.

That sounds like a job for a table.

6:44 PM
@bluefeet I hate storing redundant data

The plan is to possibly move to use hierarchyid - but that is long term because it will be incredibly messy to implement
We have a strange hierarchy that we maintain

You only have one? You're doing it rong

A: SQL 2014 change from 2008

JohnZSadly, this is not my code, it is just something I have to fix, but found out it is the actual data that is wrong. I don't know what the person who wrote this code before tried to accomplish with all the converts, but either way, found out the problem. Thank you though

Also, does snopes.com really still use popup ads? Didn't those die like 10 years ago?

@MaxVernon it hides stuff

In Greek mythology, Cassandra (Greek: Κασσάνδρα, pronounced [kas̚sándra͜a], also Κασάνδρα), also known as Alexandra or Kassandra, was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. A common version of her story is that Apollo gave her the power of prophecy in order to seduce her, but when she refused him, he gave her the curse of never being believed. In an alternative version, she fell asleep in a temple, and snakes licked (or whispered in) her ears so that she was able to hear the future. Snakes as a source of knowledge is a recurring theme in Greek mythology, although sometimes the snake...
