People from Univ. van Amsterdam are doing some research on catchy tunes and human aspects of popular music. So if you have time please take a moment to challenge yourself in various games. They are really fun and cleverly designed.
Oh and of course this is related to Univ. of Manchester and the Manchester Science Festival

4 hours later…
4:12 AM
@egreg: To what serial downvoting do you refer?

4:27 AM
@egreg "You surely don't need that mess..." This is no mess. My code has its cleanlines. On the other hand the code in expl3 syntax or most of old LaTeX packages includes mess.
@Manuel If something is possible in expl3 language then it is possible by primitives too. And more straightforward. Because expl3 is based on the same primitives. But the reverse implication isn't true. Result: what language is more powerfull? What language is better to know? IMHO primitives.

4:57 AM
@JosephWright: Good morning

@ChristianHupfer Hello

@JosephWright: It's useless to edit this 'answer', I suppose (;-)) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/70414/…

@ChristianHupfer Usually they do get tidied up if only so the author can copy-paste the result for a new question

@JosephWright: The user has a similar question ... tex.stackexchange.com/questions/199773/… (equally 'bad' in style)

5:13 AM
@ChristianHupfer Yes, saw that

2 hours later…
7:14 AM
For info: River Valley have moved their videos to a new site, river-valley.zeeba.tv

7:31 AM
@wipet I wasn't referring to your code. Since you seem to have a definitive answer about expl3, I will no longer discuss it with you.

8:10 AM
All quiet here...

@ChristianHupfer it's like running against a wall.

@Johannes_B: I've seen and commented it... however, the downvotes are too harsh at the moment...

@ChristianHupfer Not my fault, i didn't vote this time.

@Johannes_B: The upvote is from me... not for the output of the toc, but rather I am interested in a solution technique
@Johannes_B: Werner left no doubt in his comment ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Edited ;-)

8:23 AM
@Johannes_B: Removed upvote;-)

@ChristianHupfer Why?

@ChristianHupfer Re the keyval question: I really wouldn't recommend xkeyval

@JosephWright:: Why? It's exansion problems?

@ChristianHupfer Two reasons: first, it overloads some of the core keyval macros and this can be a problem, and second because ironically its interface is very confusing and would benefit from applying keyval methods

@Johannes_B: I thought about the question -- it should be improved. Perhaps, I will upvote it later on, but not at the moment

8:28 AM
@ChristianHupfer Please have a look at other questions of the OP. The ones with the most upvotes are all the same.
@ChristianHupfer This is some kind of inconsistency in the community.

@JosephWright: I definitely agree with you about the interface. I can't see anything about the internals of xkeyval redefinitions. At the moment, all my xkeyval problems have been solved so far (by you, for example, by egreg...)
@Johannes_B: Do you mean my retracted upvoting?

@ChristianHupfer No. But those questions have been only upvoted and the answers are very good (i think, tl;dr). But there was no research effort in the question, just a »do it for me«.

@Johannes_B: Wait a moment please, I take a look
@Johannes_B: Yes, I see .. you're right -- not much effort in it and some of them not even accepted

@ChristianHupfer And always requests for more.

@Johannes_B: I left a comment regarding his question - pile - up
@Johannes_B: Perhaps, it's the Banana-On-The-Backset-Guy? ;-)

8:44 AM
@ChristianHupfer Maybe. But now, To The Kitchen!

@Johannes_B: Happy cooking

@ChristianHupfer In the context of the question xkeyval also won't help as it requires keyval, so if the latter is missing there is still an issue

9:01 AM
@JosephWright: Yes, I added a statement already ;-)

9:31 AM
FUN FACT: i am wearing an apron while cooking.

@Johannes_B: Please post a selfie here... does the apron read "Kiss the cook" ?

@ChristianHupfer It is a simple white apron made of cotton with an add for »SchapfenMühle«. Nothing fancy.

@Johannes_B: You are abusing TeX.SX chat for advertisment of a company named "Schapfenmühle" This will have severe consequences ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Founded 1452, according to their website.

@egreg: Thanks... They brought their website online perhaps one year later ;-)

9:46 AM
@ChristianHupfer Their products are only of relevance to large bakeries. I don't think they read this chat :-p

Not meant as an advertisement on behalf of the company
@Johannes_B: \begin{grind}...\end{grind} ... that's how they do it ;-)
@Johannes_B: Besides all that, what's on the today's menu?

@egreg I hope you were against this notation when it was being proposed... Spent two hours thinking what is wrong with the font with the bold i characters in this PDF?
In mathematics, and more specifically in abstract algebra, a rng (or pseudo-ring or non-unital ring) is an algebraic structure satisfying the same properties as a ring, without assuming the existence of a multiplicative identity. The term "rng" (pronounced rung) is meant to suggest that it is a "ring" without "i", i.e. without the requirement for an "identity element". There is no consensus in the community as to whether the existence of a multiplicative identity must be one of the ring axioms (see the history section of the article on rings). The term "rng" was coined to alleviate this ambiguity...
I agree it is clever to drop I to make a point, but horrible for writing about it.

@percusse The term has been used by Jacobson himself! So I like it. ;-)

@egreg It treats the reader as l3regex. I can't read the article without spending 2 seconds on every rng or ring

@percusse General rngs are just a mathematical curiosity; the useful ones must have further properties, for example “rings with local units” (note that “ring” is used, nobody working on them used “rng”).
@percusse Unfortunately there still are algebra teachers who insist in not imposing a 1 on rings, which in my opinion is a big error when teaching undergraduate algebra.

10:02 AM
@egreg We have bigger problems when it comes to teaching first course on algebra ;) I sometimes think that intro. algebra courses should be taught by non-professional mathematician teachers. So that there is an inherent \bgroup...\egroup.
I have some MSc. students and they cannot break the outer hard shell and reach for the mushy parts
Because of the extreme definition-forest at the beginning holding the fort.
@egreg By the way, I think we have another Ahmed Musa for you recently eh? heheh

@percusse ?

@egreg Nevermind. Late TeX discussions etc.

@percusse Oh, I see. ;-)

10:28 AM
@ChristianHupfer Kleine Thürigner Klöße mit Champignon-Sahne-Sauce

@Johannes_B: Ah, leichte Küche ;-)

10:43 AM
@PauloCereda: Oh, good morning ... how are you today?

@ChristianHupfer Hi! :) I'm feeling better, thanks. :) Another day towards my recovery. :)

@PauloCereda No fever?

@egreg Nope. :) But coughing a lot. :(

@wipet Well, since expl3 is based on TeX, I definetly prefer it, you have the primitives and a ton of new macros already defined. You can use the primitives in case there's no “interface” to it in expl3. For instance, I prefer \token_if_expandable:NTF rather than your “hand made for the ocassion” \ifexpanded\tmp\iftrue … \else … \fi. I still don't see why are you against expl3 (I see reasons against LaTeX, since it has obvious flaws), it's just a collection of TeX macros.

@egreg, one for your specialty I would guess: latex-project.org/cgi-bin/ltxbugs2html?pr=babel/4394

10:50 AM
@wipet Moreover, those macros are much more uniform in naming scheme and behaviour. What's the problem with that? It's like having tons of tools in your garage rather than a screwdriver and a wrench… and for free! Plus they all come with a good instructions manual and are perfectly classified and in the right order in the garage. Why would you refuse?

@DavidCarlisle It's a guy named Eric using a Mac. :P

@DavidCarlisle No, it's normal behavior. Check with any other language: \selectlanguage{<lang>} doesn't end with \ignorespaces.
@DavidCarlisle Here's the example
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[dutch,english]{babel}
\begin{document}
X{\selectlanguage{dutch} Dutch}

X{\selectlanguage{dutch}Dutch}

\end{document}
Of course \foreignlanguage{dutch}{Dutch} should be used.

@egreg Oh I hadn't actually run the test, I just went by the subject line:-) I assumed he meant it was adding a space
@egreg I knew you were the expert in these matters:-)

@DavidCarlisle :)

11:07 AM
@PauloCereda There is a spelling mistake in the pdflatex rule of nightingale. Find the missing word: "I am sorry, but I expecting a list when using the 'options' argument."

@HenriMenke ooh I can't spells! :)
@HenriMenke The error is in all engines. Uh-oh. :)

@PauloCereda I spotted it in your video which is very entertaining :) You should have used "The Entertainer" as background music.

@HenriMenke A good option. :) There's also Maple Leaf somewhere during the video. :)
Spelling errors fixed in the repo, thank you! :)

@HenriMenke Switch to Benny Hill at the bug moments :)

@percusse LOL

2:09 PM
2 hours later...

"It's like having tons of tools in your garage..." Imagine that I am child playing with Lego blocks. There are 300 types of
blocks (300 TeX primitives) from which I am able to build everything what it
is possible to build from Lego. Each type of blocks has well know and good
defined feature. I am using these features _actively_ without reading of
manuals because there is only 300 types and I am able to remember them. On
the other hand there exists thousands of prepared Lego buildings (houses,
cars, boats, airplanes etc.), each of them includes hundreds pages of manual

@wipet: I wish one day I can survive the TeXbook. :) I'm stuck in one of the chapters. :(
That's one of the reasons I haven't delved into LaTex bowels yet. I'd love to understand TeX first. :)

@PauloCereda One of the disadvantage of TeX is that TeXbook isn't written sufficiently good. What I did first after familiarizing with TeX: I wrote my own book "TeXbook inside out", a complete TeX reference manual. I am using only this book when I forget something. But this book is only in Czech...

@wipet I find TeX by Topic pretty good myself

@wipet Oh my! :) I was thinking of trying TeX: the program, but I'm not sure I'll have the guts to read it. :)
@JosephWright I printed it to have on paper. :)

2:25 PM
@PauloCereda Same here, in my case the recent DANTE reprint

@JosephWright You are powerful, I'm not. :P

@PauloCereda Erm, more I'm a member of DANTE, you are (probably) not

@JosephWright :)
@Joseph: English or German?

@PauloCereda Huh? I'm clearly not German

@JosephWright I meant the edition. :)

2:31 PM
@PauloCereda It's exactly the same as the electronic version: in English

@JosephWright aaah got it. :)

@JosephWright Awesome!
Das Buch scheint sehr kompliziert.

@PauloCereda I think Herbert Voß did quite a bit of work

@JosephWright Indeed.
@Joseph: I believe Dante meetings have a myriad of TeXperts: Heiko, Herbert, Frank, ...

2:52 PM
@PauloCereda Not to forget Ulrike and barbara

@Johannes_B Indeed. :)

#Harish update: -120 Party tomorrow!
@PauloCereda The sum of those three's rep is 317186, less than 2% more than mine. :P

@egreg Or he can get a load of accepts during Answer the Unanswered ;-)

Hello, everybody!

3:53 PM
@egreg Want to join DANTE? ;-)

@JosephWright Maybe. But consider that the session will start when the local time in India is 2:30 am.

@egreg Yes, I know
@egreg He could start now :-)

@egreg You are aready amongst the demigods of TeX. :)

4:14 PM
@egreg IMHO this number doesn't declare about all;-)

@wipet Certainly: at least in part a function of time since first registration on site
@PauloCereda I sorted out the OpenHub stuff: openhub.net/p/latex is now up-to-date (I hope!)

@JosephWright Yay!

@wipet It's just an inner joke.

@Joseph: Speaking of aprons, can we start a L3 store where we sell silly things L3-branded? :)

@PauloCereda Ask Frank

4:22 PM
For example, a Go away or I will replace you by a macro. mug. :)
@JosephWright No, it has to be you. :)

@PauloCereda Added myself as 'manager' for beamer and biblatex (OK, for the latter I'm just a minor player, but ...)

@JosephWright OK, and we know that the mentioned number doesn't depend on time linearly:)

@JosephWright A good plan. :)

@PauloCereda Any idea how you rename 'stacks'?

@JosephWright Let me check. :)

4:33 PM
@PauloCereda Ah, got it

4:45 PM
Hello everyone! Enjoying your weekend? :)

@cgnieder So far yes

5:04 PM
@JosephWright That's how it should be :)

5:36 PM
@cgnieder I'm a lazy, lazy boy :)

@tohecz sounds perfect :) ... and relaxing!

@cgnieder yep, but I should go fetch some food before the shop closes

6:39 PM
@wipet That's an argument towards learning TeX rather than hating expl3. It's true what you say, but still there's no reason against that renaming scheme of expl3, and all those macros already written. \token_if_eq_meaning:NTF is \ifx•• … \else … \fi, which I found just by searching \token_if_ and seeing the results.

7:20 PM
@Manuel Plain users tend to have a different approach to 'pre-packed' solutions

Welcome to the oh wait.

Am i too late?

7:40 PM
@PauloCereda Houston, we've had a problem here :P

@tohecz :)

8:34 PM
@JosephWright TeX was not designed to implemet new layers over it: there is no namespaces, no error handling for new layer, no tracing support etc. LaTeX and expl3 uses TeX in the way which was not assumed when TeX was designed. This brings problems. This site tex.sx.com is full of questions related to such problems.

@wipet this discussion again? :-/

Ok, common seriously .. Who is starring a quote from Paulo?

@wipet I meant more that most plain users tend to like the programming side and feel that understanding the 'basics' is something all users should do, while the experience of many LaTeX (and I think ConTeXt) people is that many 'end users' really don't want to do this.

I'm tempted to VTC this as OT, since it's really about lilypond-book and not about TeX:
3
Q: Lilypond-book seems to skip included files

hardmoothI am experimenting with using Lilypond from windows. It seems lilypond-book skips sub-files. I created a minimum working/not-working example in main.lytex, which I'm processing with a CMD-file (see below). The first two versions (lilypond-environment and lilypondfile) work, while the third one ...

@wipet Also, there's the question of 're-inventing the wheel': I'd rather not have to re-solve the same problems in different documents and avoid if possible copying the same code from one place to another, and prefer to use well-defined pre-built solutions if available

8:38 PM
Ulrike Fischer once introduced the term Grabenkämpfe related to TeX. I can't remember the specifi topic, but to put the result in a nutshell: If both sides have their opinion, that's pretty much it ...
Clarifying: Grabenkampf (pl. Grabenkämpfe) -> Trench Warfare

@JosephWright "'end users' really don't want to do this..." Yes and this is the basic problem. I needn't think about electrons and transistors in my computer when I am using (for example) TeX because the new layer is possible over such transistors. But the same isn't possible over TeX.

@wipet Depends on your point of view: I'd say LaTeX2e does a reasonable job, ConTeXt better and something like Stefan Lehmke's DocScape even more so (it's a Lua-based typesetter which uses TeX just for the line breaking, as I understand it)
@wipet What I do know is that I wouldn't be using TeX is plain was all there was

9:13 PM
So has the session started or not? :)

@tohecz Hopefully

@JosephWright well, I've already started some cleanup

@tohecz Saw that

tohecz You shouldn't add the extension The / at the beginning of the path looks wrong. You have a better chance with \includegraphics[scale=1]{../model_1_2} However: You might not be allowed to work with a file that is one folder up, due to (reasonable) security restrictions disallowing this.

@tohecz - Hi! This is the first time I'm participating in this particular group

Q: Embedding PDF while rewriting fonts in Latex

timI have some PDF-files which I embed as graphic-objects into my latex-project. Those PDFs come from different sources. One I created in Powerpoint myself, then exported to PDF to make it vectorized and another one is cropped from a PDF usermanual. Now I'm wondering what would be the best and easi...

Another one where 'sorry, not doable' seems the best answer

@JosephWright Which Q exactly?

@Johannes_B Same one as before, the beamer one where 'no' seems the only reasonable answer

@Mico Welcome from germany

@Johannes_B - Danke!

@JosephWright it seems more complicated than that. It was closed, he said he'll answer that, it was reopened etc.

@JosephWright I don't know keynote but there really seems to be no definite LaTeX answer

Q: Source code for navigation bullets in miniframes outer theme?

BibiI would like to know the code used to obtain the navigation bullets when using mini-frames. (The idea is to make my own custom template with a bullet for each frame in current subsection.) Cheers, S.

@Johannes_B VTC as unclear, thanks.

A: «Undefined reference» when using an URL in Bibtex

Joseph WrightAs indicated in the name, ieeetr-fr is an adaptation of the IEEE style for use in French. As such, it hard-codes in an assumption that babel is loaded with the french option to define for example \fg. You will either need to load babel appropriately or use a different style (say the standard IEEE...

user39158This problem arises only in some files. I don't know if it is because of the size or simply because I add more and more package, some of which I don't know the utility ... Here are all the package I've upload. And the last package I added before it stop indicating the errors is soul \documentcla...

A: Beamer equivalent of Keynote's old web view

Joseph WrightShort answer: no. Longer answer: PDF files, which are produced by TeX (either directly or via DVI) do not have the possibility to show the type of dynamic content required here. This essentially requires a web rendered 'built in' or 'called' by the viewer, and that is not part of the PDF spec.

One can argue about Flash I guess, but really PDF doesn't support this
Another 'not possible' one?

Q: Pair kerning strategies in (pdf)LaTeX

MarcosI'm using the microtype package on pdfLaTeX and I'm wondering over the possibility to implement pair kerning, as opposed to single-character kerning, within the facilities provided by that package. If this is not contemplated in microtype, then I'd like to ask about different strategies to do so....

Doable in LuaTeX of course, but not the same thing

cfr
@JosephWright It is doable with LaTeX or pdfLaTeX but I don't know that it is doable at the document level. That is, you could adjust the kerning pairs when setting up the TFM files to configure the font. At least, if I've understood correctly. ('pair kerning' seems just equivalent to 'kerning' as far as I can tell.) So I guess 'not possible' seems overly strong...

@cfr Clearly you can change the font in any way you choose to, so that to me seems to be a non-answer

re the Pair kerning question - I'd say that under the Lua(La)TeX the most straightforward approach would be to set up a "feature file" that provides the improved/corrected kerning pairs.

Anyway, too late for me, so I'll check back for any mod-hammer requests tomoorw

Q: Empty space on the rest of the page after a figure

Prenume NumeI get an empty space on one page, as you can see in the picture. There is clearly enough space there to put the text from the next page. Also, I use \makeatletter \setlength{\@fptop}{0pt} \makeatother because originally it was putting the image in the middle of the page, and I thought that if...

@JosephWright I meant more that you can change the TeX font without changing the font font. That is, you don't need to edit it in fontforge or whatever. You can adjust the kerning in the TeX support files. But I'm not suggesting it is a good solution. Only 'not possible' seems too strong.

I've added a comment (not a full answer) to the pair kerning strategies question to suggest the OP look into using LuaLaTeX along with a feature file.

tlmg autoremoved mh... anyone knows why exactly?

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez - I think the 'mh' bundle was broken up into two separate bundles.

Q: How do I prevent text after inserting a greek letter from being italicized?

h7u9iI'm new to LaTeX, and I'm trying to write some relational algebra with it. When I put a \sigma or \pi into the code, all the text that comes after it becomes italicized. Here's a quick example: \documentclass[11pt]{article} \begin{document} \sigma \ hello world \end{document} This produces...
