@Nasser hmm well it isn't that then:-)

4 hours later…
4:53 AM
Hello anybody there

5:11 AM
@egreg I need a small help
@MarcoDaniel I need a small help

5:28 AM
<rant>Why does anyone use Emacs 23?</rant>

5:47 AM
Are there any tutorials for memoir so that I can really get hands on to it because the documentation is too long and In one of the answers , a video lecture was posted but Its not that useful

@subhamsoni Not that I know of, but the memoir documentation really is well worth the read.

hmmm Thank you.. I will start it off

6:09 AM
is this chat usually frequented?
if I have simple questions...

@Theta30 It's frequented far earlier in the day
Most of our regulars seem to be from the UK/rest of Europe
Their day starts 5–9 hours before ours

6:47 AM
thanks
good enough

@subhamsoni What's the issue?

7:24 AM
The best thing to happen since the Quake drop-down terminal (yakuake and the like) - terminal in your browser :) paradoxxxzero.github.io/2014/02/28/butterfly.html

@MarcoDaniel I want to lean memoir and I want to have some basics, documentation is very huge

@subhamsoni It's an entire book on typesetting, really
@subhamsoni You'll need to specify what exactly you need to know

A transformation from basic classes like book,article to memoir .. If u can Help me this way: I can give a small code and how to translate to memoir and and I will take it from there @MarcoDaniel

@subhamsoni Well in the first instance you should be able to take a 'vanilla' article and simply change the \documentclass line

What is a vanilla article?

7:34 AM
@subhamsoni Something like
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}

Some text here
\begin{itemize}
  \item Some
  \item Entries
\end{itemize}
More text
\[
  y = mx + c
\]
\emph{for example}.

\end{document}
Just a lot of normal LaTeX input

I changed to memoir, I could see the font changes but if I give showtrims as the option I don't see any kind of change in my output @MarcoDaniel

@subhamsoni Sorry, I don't work with memoir. I am using KOMA.

Actually I am beginner only @MarcoDaniel, I was confused to go with memoir or KOMA. Since memoir was all in one I went for that but really couldn't understand that. Can you give me some insight on KOMA scripts please

Hmmm got it @MarcoDaniel

Arrived 2:30 in the morning today due to the traffic of Carnaval. :(

10:13 AM
@PauloCereda And it's not Rio de Janeiro!

@egreg The bus station is near the sambódromo in SP, so I had no escape. :(
Thousans of people, very crazy.

pprI'm looking for a particular type of phone intended for power users of calls and texts. I feel the need of posting this:
The first comment is priceless:
> See, Adele? THIS is how it's meant to be done.

1 hour later…
1:28 PM
@PauloCereda I don't understand the reference.

1:50 PM
@morbusg Sorry I was wrong. There is VAT on ebooks in the UK. The EU complained about it last year and said that it should be made the same as physical books, but it seems the complaint has been ignored.

@PauloCereda Indeed. Amy, Amy, Amy...
@FaheemMitha It's a reference to the fact that Adele (another British R&B singer who is in some ways similar to Amy Winehouse) simply can't compare to what Amy was.

2:22 PM
@AlanMunn we should ask @egreg to choose between the two

@DavidCarlisle He would say it's like comparing infinities of denumerable sets. Both are infinitely bad.
Also, not being an Adele fan, someone else would need to come up with the clip to be compared.

@AlanMunn Or two chapter styles provided by fncychap.

@egreg Indeed.

@egreg :-)

@AlanMunn \penalty10000

2:36 PM
@DavidCarlisle I see finding 'words' has popped up in tex.stackexchange.com/questions/163053/…: relevant to team discussion on case changing, etc. :-)

@AlanMunn :) Apart from her problems, she was a promising singer. Surely one of the strongest voices. :)
@FaheemMitha What Alan said. :)

I did not find either of those two videos appealing.

@FaheemMitha Well, as they say, YMMV. Neither does @egreg, so you're in good company. :)
@FaheemMitha Do you like jazz and R&B singing generally?

@AlanMunn I'm not sure. I think it depends.

@FaheemMitha For example, Billie Holiday made the song that I posted famous. Here's her version from 1947. It's much sweeter, but Winehouse's version although different, stands up even to this.

2:48 PM
@AlanMunn Well, would you compare Amy Winehouse with Billie Holiday? There's no battle.
!!/battle

@AlanMunn I guess it is Ok. Doesn't do much for me. As you say, YMMV. I like Bach, and Schubert and Sibelius (and a few others like that) and pop music is good when you can dance to it. Otherwise I don't have a lot of musical range, though I do listen to misc stuff from time to time.

@egreg You can't have an opinion on it, because Billie is also infinitely bad for you... :)

@AlanMunn Not at all!

@egreg I thought all music after Beethoven was verboten.
@egreg Actually, I just did, and said that her version stands up to Billie's. :)

@AlanMunn It depends on what musicians claim to do.

2:50 PM
(Heresy, I'm sure, to some.)
@egreg Now it seems you're retreating from your earlier position.

@AlanMunn Listening to the Adagio from Mozart's clarinet concerto. Can you compare AW with it? ;-)

@egreg The clarinet quintet is good.

@egreg Amy can certainly sing better than any clarinet player. :)

@FaheemMitha An outstanding piece of music of all times

@egreg Well, Mozart did better.

2:53 PM
@egreg But for me those kinds of comparisons are just invalid. It's like saying do you prefer red or soft.

@AlanMunn What comparisons?

@FaheemMitha Comparing the Mozart clarinet concerto to the Amy Winehouse song.
For example, right now in my car CD player, I have First Aid Kit (a Swedish folk duo), Smashing Pumpkins, and Beethoven. But I'm not comparing them to each other.

@AlanMunn Oh, as egreg is suggesting above. Yes, I don't think comparisons are useful. What is the point? Listen to what you like.

@FaheemMitha Not as good as the concerto (I play clarinet)

@JosephWright which concerto?

3:00 PM
@FaheemMitha Mozart

@JosephWright Right, but which Mozart concerto?

@FaheemMitha There is only one (for clarinet).

My favorite piece of music might be the C Major Schubert String Quintet, D956. I quite like chamber music. It is like a conversation.
@AlanMunn Ok, I'm not really aware of a Mozart clarinet concerto. I know the piano ones.

@egreg We have a clarinet expert in da house. :) /pokes @JosephWright

@PauloCereda We can always rely on you to raise the cultural standards around here. :)

3:06 PM
@AlanMunn I wub you. :)
Sometimes I traverse the dark corner of the internet.

@PauloCereda Some sort of German pop music?

@FaheemMitha I only knew it as Der Ententanz. :) But I never heard it with lyrics. :)

@PauloCereda That's originally Italian, “Il ballo del qua qua”

@egreg Really?! That's lovely! :)

And @PauloCereda instantly bookmarks...

3:11 PM
@PauloCereda Not so sure any more. It used to be a horse battle of a couple of Italian singers; well one is American, but has lived in Italy since she was a child. She's the daughter of Tyrone Power.

@AlanMunn Exactly! :) ma che grande novità! :P
@egreg ooh! :)

@PauloCereda One of the most inexpressive actors in the history of cinema.

@egreg LOL

@PauloCereda But he's good in "Witness for the prosecution". A great movie.
Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton are extraordinary.

@egreg Actually it was composed by a Swiss accordian player according to Wikipedia, so the Ententanz version is first.

3:18 PM
@AlanMunn: now I can't stop listening. :)

@PauloCereda Well, it's your own fault. I just now need to find a way to erase it from my brain for the day.

@AlanMunn The intro of The final countdown is now playing inside your head. :)
That solves a problem and creates another, I guess.

@PauloCereda You see, now is a time that I'm very happy to have a YAPM. This one I will not google...

@AlanMunn Oh my! :) How about Don't stop believing? :)

@PauloCereda Grrr.

3:22 PM
@AlanMunn <3

@PauloCereda Raindrops keep falling on my head

@AlanMunn Oh no! Backfire!

@AlanMunn Another great movie. :)

@egreg Yes, that's true it was from a great movie.

@AlanMunn And Burt Bacharach is a good composer of easy listening music, because his music is not easy.

3:25 PM
@egreg True.

@AlanMunn Everytime I hear about that movie I think of bicycle and this comes to mind: youtube.com/watch?v=78MKBHR3NbU

@PauloCereda Dare I click?

@AlanMunn Do it. :)
Nat King Cole, it can't be bad. :)

@PauloCereda That's debatable....

@AlanMunn Well, I think I said a strong sentence. :P

3:46 PM
@egreg In the spaces question we just answered, the \ignorespaces doesn't actually seem to be required. I guess it's just safer to put it in?

@AlanMunn You added % in the places where it would act

@egreg Right, I know. Which method is preferred?

@AlanMunn \ignorespaces, because it doesn't require special attention in the document

@egreg Ok, that's what I thought. I'll just delete my answer.

2 hours later…
5:43 PM
@tohecz: yay Tom!

Hi! Anyone got lisp+lilypond in 10 minutes tutorial please? That shit stuff is driving me crazy

@tohecz Gimme a couple of minutes, I'll install lilypond. :)

5:54 PM
@PauloCereda let us know if you find any ducks in the pond. :)

@PauloCereda well, I gotta go. But that lilypond thing drives me crazy, I think I've never seen a more stupid seriously meant language than lisp
Could anyone please try whether checkmytrip.com is off?

6:13 PM

@TorbjørnT. ah ok.

@Johannes_B Actually that's accurate, but sadly not just this. :(

@PauloCereda i hope it doesn't get worse than @StefanKottwitz comment.

@Johannes_B Well, I did not mention the men ... :-)

@Johannes_B Help us cast upvotes, notify questions that can be closed, ping/annoy @Joseph/@Stefan because they have the mod hammer, write an answer for an unanswered question, convert a comment to an answer, post random photos of ducks, downvote David's answers, use the force, and at last but not least, have fun!

@PauloCereda what about answers from @egreg?

@Johannes_B If you don't feel you can answer any question, look for older zero-vote questions in subject areas (tags) you're familiar with. That's a rather janitorial task, but it helps to reduce the list.

@TorbjørnT. Yes, it seems so

@egreg hi! I've just given you couple +10 rep points you'll never get :)

@tohecz Thanks! ;-)

@tohecz UWYA as far as I know. But I'd like to hear the official answer as well; so I know for the future. :)

@PaulGessler the old TL was simply better, at least for us

@tohecz unclear
@tohecz Yes

@Christoph I casted a vote and added a comment, @Joseph can migrate it. Btw, I wuv your avvy :)

The Powers suggested such cases would be 'off-topic', but that seems rather unhelpful
@tohecz Done already

@JosephWright just seen it :)
@JosephWright yep, because "OT" sounds definitive, "unclear" leaves a lot of space for improvement

10:47 PM
@tohecz Yes
@tohecz Hence favouring 'unclear'

@Christoph Let's keep the sage one open, I'll look into it one day

@JosephWright That question wasn't too unclear to be closed, and to migrate it, there isn't the option to select SO.

@Christoph Nowadays only mods can do a migration other than for main <-> meta

@Christoph it's correct to just case an OT vote, add the correct new place into the close comment, and flag it for mods or ping them here :)
@JosephWright we would use the 2 or 3 discussed ones tho, I think

@tohecz OK :)

10:51 PM
@tohecz We (mods) can ask for more paths, but it's not a big issue so I don't really see the need

@JosephWright ok. It's just annoying that I have to write down the comment and flag it for diamonds, its 3 times as much work than just casting the vote :)
