nnnnoooooooooooooo
I was hoping to get 5555 rep today (along with 1 gold, 11 silver and 44 bronze badges)
but now someone upvoted one of my challenges and I'm at 5550... (and it seems unlikely that I'll get another question upvote before some answer upvote)

2 hours later…
10:05 AM
aaaaaand, missed it

@m.buettner Aaaaand, saved it!

@ProgramFOX no I went from 5550 to 5560
or maybe I didn't

Replace the %3A with a semicolon and you'll see :D
@m.buettner Ok, link fixed.

ha, did you retract an upvote on the vigil answer and upvoted the question instead? ^^ thanks!

Yes, I did.

10:13 AM
sweet :D

@hosch250 (if you read chat), @Quincunx: I've changed the tag description for , because the previous one was severely at odds with reality.

@Doorknob can superping hosch250 if he doesn't read chat

Q: Am I supposed to be able to favorite my own questions?

Some GuyAm I supposed to be able to favorite my own question? It doesn't seem right...

1:32 PM
@m.buettner Nice. At one point, I had 101,101 rep on Stack Overflow. (Maybe one day I may hit 111,111 exactly.)

@ChrisJester-Young I think I used to have a screenshot of 22,222 on SO.

Nice, nice. :-)

If you hit 111,119 then call us and we'll all serially downvote your stuff to 111,111

My favorite was my 9,999 screenshot. So close...

1:36 PM
My favorite was my 99,999 screenshot, that I took once on a non-SE site.

@ProgramFOX What kind of non-SE site has rep? ;-)

i don't have screenshots, my rep here (655) is my highest on any site

@ChrisJester-Young CodeProject has.

@ChrisJester-Young thanks for editing the comment... it seemed a bit like you were using your mod-nuke because you declared language-specific questions as off-topic ;)

1:38 PM
@m.buettner Yeah, I can understand why a new user might think that, for sure. :-)

CJY can you mod another mod's comments?
Can you add a close paren to the end of Doorknob's starred post?
Can you also delete all traces that I asked this question of you?
Thank you kind sir. #whatmodsarefor

@Rusher Uh, what? (Also, you can delete your own messages.)

I can't after two minutes, and you didn't comply within that time frame.
"abuses mod powers" needs a close parentheses at the end of it
17 hours ago, by Doorknob
abuses mod powers

@Rusher not all traces, mods can see deleted posts

Oh no
Plan foiled! Abort!

1:43 PM
@Rusher All traces? Impossible. #whatscreenshotsarefor

@m.buettner Indeed, and in fact, I have mentioned before that deleting messages in the mod-only chatroom has a Streisand Effect. ;-)

Googles Streisand Effect

Wait I know what to do.
CJY, can you not mod Doorknob's comment? Geobits, can you take a screenshot?

?

1:46 PM
The Streisand effect is the phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide, remove, or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely, usually facilitated by the Internet. It is named after American entertainer Barbra Streisand, whose attempt in 2003 to suppress photographs of her residence in Malibu, California, inadvertently generated further publicity. Similar attempts have been made, for example, in cease-and-desist letters, to suppress numbers, files and websites. Instead of being suppressed, the information receives extensive publici...

Will be back after my morning Full Throttle has kicked in.

So my brother just agreed to draw a picture of an Angel fighting a Demon that is wider and not too tall (so it will fit perfectly in my Good Versus Evil challenge).
He just graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design so his sketches are neat

@Rusher sweet ;D

@Doorknob This is the reason why my avatars are all pictures I took, so that people can't steal it. (Obviously, I can't imagine anybody who wants to use my selfie, but I have other avatars that are different.)

@ChrisJester-Young My profile picture is quite... distinctive. :P

@Doorknob Yes, it is, but do you have any recourse if somebody (e.g., Wobbuffet) took your avatar and used it? :-P

Yes, a flag. (Or of course changing it back, since I'm a mod :P)
(that happened once, didn't it)

@Doorknob Yeah, it did. :-P

@Doorknob For your reading pleasure: codegolf.stackexchange.com/users/message/3

Hello, @raforanz!
Heh.

@Doorknob u know python ? :-)
@Doorknob I'm learning python and got a simple doubt
:-)

@raforanz This site isn't the place for your "doubt", try Stack Overflow.

@raforanz Um, why would you come to the Programming Puzzles & Code Golf chatroom for help with Python?

@Doorknob hmm, wrong turn :-(

2:28 PM
@raforanz Sorry, this chatroom isn't about programming questions, since it's the chat for the Code Golf site. You could try the Python chatroom on Stack Overflow instead. Thanks!

Better yet, post a question on Stack Overflow directly so people can get rep.

@Doorknob Thank you :-)

@raforanz As a side note, please don't ping random people. Just ask your question, and if there's anyone around who wants to help, they will.

@raforanz Or ping me. I like being pinged. You can ping me all day long. I'll be the best ping you ever had.

3:18 PM
I've lost my mind. I just wrote else if (part == State.Warning and whole != State.Alarm)
"and" is most definitely not an operator in any language I have ever used

@Rusher you've never written Python?

Oh, I guess I have. It's just been a while since I had reason to use "and" because it isn't common in golfing

@Rusher yup, everybody uses & or no if statement at all

@Rusher Lua uses and

part|~whole==State.Warning|State.Alarm
(that definitely won't work)

3:27 PM
@KyleKanos Oh I have used Lua! But only on a computer inside of a computer.
And the computer was shaped oddly like my avatar. Minecraft does't have flatscreens yet.

@Rusher That's weird. I use Lua all the time here

Woohoo my first ever python program

Sorry, I don't normally self-promote my answers, but I was pretty excited to finally jump into the world of python

I'll be honest, I've never heard of turtles in Python lol. You get an upvote just because of the title.

@DigitalTrauma I learned Ruby to do a PPCG challenge once

@m.buettner Cool. Yep, sometimes I think I'm being a timewaster on PPCG, but when it inspires me to learn useful languages, I realise it is time very well spent.

3:37 PM
@DigitalTrauma It also teaches you loads of stuff about some of the more obscure features of a language, which can come in really handy in non-golfed code as well. Plus, problem-solving skills, problem-solving skills, problem-solving skills.

@m.buettner Couldn't agree more!

I've mostly learned how to brute force everything but fool anyone who reviews my code into thinking, "Wow, this is so short and concise!"

:D I'm now in top+15 on PPCG

Must suck to be in the top negative 15.
Nooooooooo
I am chatnoob. One of these days I will learn patience, and snipe comments like a pro.

25th now... slowly working my way up...

3:49 PM
Where is this list?

I think your comment still works. mniip wrote top+15. That's definitely an integer-overflow that lands you at bottom+14, so within the worst 15 ;) (that's actually what I thought you meant, because I didn't pay attention to the edit icons)

@DigitalTrauma but you have count there :-/
like.... yourself.... manually.... in your head...

hee hee

how do people even get 70 upvotes?

3:55 PM
Wow I'm on page 4. I thought I'd be a little higher lol.

@Trimsty Mostly on very popular questions, or answers to popular questions.
They come into the Hot Questions list and get many attention on the site itself.

I'm on page 3!
Ranked 89!

This is why I'm asking my brother to draw me a pretty picture. I wanna make Hot Questions and people from other sites will say "Oh what a pretty picture!"

So.... attract votes based on the pretty picture rather than the challenge? Seems.... a bit shady :p

@Rusher I have a couple 30+ posts over on Physics based on pretty pictures

3:58 PM
you get a lot of upvotes on UIUX for nice pics

and also Game Devs
and probably also cooking

Kinda like posting xkcd on meta.so. It's gonna get votes, even if it's not very relevant .

@Geobits just saying "xkcd" gets you starred ;3

yes!

@mniip Hm. I'll have to let the theorists get back to us on that one
@Geobits we can do anything we want, right? o:

everyone just say 'xkcd' and then we star each one :D

@Trimsty I still need 3 more xkcd comments to fill mine. You haz tiny monitor?

@Geobits i guess. Oh well, xkcd

I guess everyone here has 1366x768

yeah
i have a big screen next to me
but that's for the pc

Mine's bigger than 1366x768
I have 2 more slots to fill
But I'm also dual monitoring it

@KyleKanos Two more slots to fill with what exactly? (say it!)

With xkcd, of course

Did you know that the base-36 number xkcd is a product of two prime numbers?

4:17 PM
@ProgramFOX No, I did not know that. But I did just check it too
It makes 4 prime factors in base-34 (all distinct) and 8 prime factors in base-35 (3 distinct)

◑,◑

interesting number then
some dude on /r/minimalism redesigned windows

@Trimsty: Is it an actual usable environment, or is it just images

@KyleKanos just pics unfortunately

That's sad

I'd have liked to see someone port it to Gnome, if it were real

(is lxde fan)
@KyleKanos sounds like a nice project ;3

I'm not talented enough to do stuff like that :/

i hang around on uiux.se a lot
just lurking teaches you a lot ;3

I can imagine.
But I'm not very graphically-inclined
Probably why I'm a Computational Astrophysicist

4:29 PM
What I don't like about that design is the scroll bar, it looks to small to grab
@KyleKanos It's really hard to choose which one of those jobs is more important

How do you post images again

just the url

@mniip Just post a link, it will automatically onebox.

xD
it doesn't have xkcd in the url and I starred it
i'm such a monster
@KyleKanos Now I'm thinking about that...

4:33 PM
About being one?

@KyleKanos yes, and also writing the gui for gnome. :P
But why even bother with gnome? Let's fork FreeBSD and strip it down to just the bare basics, golf it, and write the gui ourselves

You've got some time before University, right?
Like 4 years?

@KyleKanos I start with IGCSE next year 2nd quarter
i have some time ;3

@Trimsty here you go

i can't unstar the other one. :c
oh well
have 2 stars :P

@Trimsty Sounds like ArchBSD

^ what does it look like if someone stars this? (please? :))
MUAHAHAHA

now you have to edit it to say "10 xkcd"
c'mon

Infinity

4:41 PM
add xkcd ;n;

(edited to three digits, so more than one star just looks like having spaces as a thousand separator)
@ProgramFOX you wish...

so many stars! o:

Oh dear. I left you guys alone for ten minutes and all XKCD broke loose?
4

we agreed to star all xkcd posts fsr
@KyleKanos I'm seriously interested in this now

Oh is that right? Every single XKCD post?

4:44 PM
(he's going to edit it out)

That wouldn't work because he could remove the star after I lose edit privileges. (XKCD)

@Trimsty I was interested when it first came out but then I couldn't get a GUI so I stopped caring

maybe he wouldn't notice in time

Eventually I'd like to take a look at it

@KyleKanos let's build a kernel in Fortran and Rust, make a nice POSIX shell for it and throw it off a tall building

4:46 PM
If there is a badge for stars, I'm going to get it. (XKCD)
2

Also, anybody here heard of Felix?

@Rusher There's a badge for chat

@Trimsty Rather bold statement, t generates highly optimised machine binaries which outperform all interpreters, bytecode compilers, virtual machines, and most compiled languages including C.

@KyleKanos Yup, though, after a bit of testing, can confirm
it works like V8 does
I was thinking that it should replace Javascript
gets trampled by people complaining about Dart

4:49 PM
V8?

eurgh.
i hate google.
The V8 JavaScript Engine is an open source JavaScript engine developed by Google for the Google Chrome web browser. It has since seen use in many other projects. , the head programmer is Lars Bak. The first version of the V8 engine was released at the same time as the first version of Chrome, September 2, 2008. V8 compiles JavaScript to native machine code (IA-32, x86-64, ARM, or MIPS ISAs) before executing it, instead of more traditional techniques such as interpreting bytecode or compiling the whole program to machine code and executing it from a filesystem. The compiled code is additi...

@Trimsty Hello!

7:37 PM
@m.buettner Here's the urban dictionary entry for cat face. I never understand why people use blowjob face. Urban dictionary says that :O indicates surprise or that one has a... well... nevermind. Does anyone actually make a giant O with their mouth when they are surprised?

@Rusher comic/cartoon/manga/anime characters do

Q: Tips on my new golfing language, One Character Python

isaacgOne Character Python (OCP) If this post would be better suited for the main site, I will move it there, please let me know. I'm really not sure where it belongs. Hi, code golfers. I've decided to make a new programming language for the purpose of golfing. I haven't finished implementing it yet,...

It's number one for <3
4

The Internet is a terrifying place...

7:45 PM
Noooo..... it's a welcoming, wholesome place where you can extend your knowledge and let your imagination roam free. With cats.

You just need to stay away from the shadowy places over there.

Everything the light touches....

@m.buettner So I should join 4chan?

I feel like 4chan is somewhere in the shadow of the shadowy places.

Not just the elephant graveyard, but inside a skull.

7:52 PM
Wouldn't the shadow of a shadow be the light?

This post has an open/reopen war, and now it has 3 reopen votes and 3 delete votes...

@Rusher I don't even what to respond to this other than "no."
@Quincunx How can it have 3 delete votes and not be deleted?

I believe it has something to do with the number of answers and reopen votes. But I don't know

Delete votes are weird like that. I believe it needed 6 more last I checked.

@m.buettner Because of the number of answers

7:54 PM
(of course the tooltip says 1) ><

@Rusher :-O is a gaping face.

@Geobits It tells me it needs 1 more. Probably the same old bug.

Not an O face.

But @Quincrux, did you bring it up because you want to resolve it once and for all in the chat?

@Rusher Sure I did. But only once: codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/6671/…

7:54 PM
@Quincunx Yea, if you click it the dialog comes up and says 6

@Geobits Isn't that the number of delete votes you have left? I get 3.

@m.buettner Do you have enough rep to add the tag back yourself? If so, just do that.
You certainly do not need my blessing or anything.

@Rusher I was pointing out that the community disagrees. Either we should delete it, let it reopen, or the war will go on forever.

@ChrisJester-Young I asserted that you had a good reason for removing it, so I wanted to give you a chance to discuss that rather than starting a comment-less edit war on the question.

@Quincunx Yes, it turns out I found something to be completely wrong about :)

7:57 PM
@m.buettner Personally I find [programming-puzzle] a bit nondescript, but if you think it has a purpose, please use it by all means.

@ChrisJester-Young I agree that it's a bit hard to nail down, but the question is in the spirit of other challenges with that tag. Basically "make a construct of your language do something you wouldn't normally expect it to" or similar.

@Quincunx That's not true. I'm not allowed to close vote twice even if it does reopen.

@m.buettner Fair enough.

@Rusher I never claimed you could. I know this.

Then you are claiming that one side of the other is "right", and we should work together to figure out which side that is?

8:01 PM
I'm claiming that we should do something about it. I personally would like to delete it.

The close vote reasons are all subjective. End of story. Let people vote and let it toggle.

Why not just lock it? Not open (which I agree with, my close vote is displayed there), but not deleted. Can't be reopened by non-mod, no more open/close struggle.

And that's the other possibility. But what are the guidelines for applying locks?

Wait, certain members of the community voted for reopen. Respect their votes and don't lock the question.

Good point. I'm not sure if it has "historical significance."
@Rusher If it gets deleted instead, their votes also get disregarded.

8:04 PM
If it gets deleted then it got deleted because people voted it that way.
It's one thing to lose a vote. It's entirely different to get locked by a moderator.

@Rusher Respect the reopeners, but not the closers? Just look at the revision history:

So basically, I won't touch that question with a 10-foot pole.

When did I say the closers should be disregarded?
Every vote should be respected.
Don't mess with it, don't come here and ask for the community to take a side, don't call for a moderator to step in (unless someone is manipulating the vote). Leave it alone.

@ChrisJester-Young So you recommend ignoring it?

@Quincunx No, I'm not recommending any such thing. I'm leaving it alone because mod votes are binding.

8:07 PM
@Rusher this

@m.buettner Okay.

Personally, I wish they'd implement this suggestion.

The only thing that should be discussed here might be "Why is the community so split about this, is that a problem, and if so how do we take an official stance (on questions like that?"

@Geobits The question it discusses has an interesting revision history...

Yea, I wasn't concerned with the actual question they're talking about, but the solution seems interesting. Atwood comments that it's toxic, but I think a slight tweak would even that out.

8:11 PM
Speaking of manipulating votes, did anyone get an eerie feeling that trolls were collaborating in their secret troll corner and messing with the votes on code-trolling questions back when that was a huge topic?

@Geobits I'm not even sure that would happen. I think if more than 5 people could cast a close vote, then I assume there would be more people agreeing on a question having to be closed than people pity-voting to leave them open.

I have a friend who sits on 4chan all day and participates in group harassment of juggalos and whatever group 4chan has decided to make fun of that day. I feel like an attempt to squash code-trolling would really serve as a call to arms for people like my friend.

I agree. I mean it could be tweaked if it turned out to be a problem. It could, though. I've seen plenty of people explicitly upvote for this very reason, with a comment like "+1 to counter the driveby downvote".

@Rusher No, no collaboration. There were just a bunch of users with sufficient privileges and very strong opinions on code-trolling who would just systematically up/down/close/reopen/delete-vote any code-trolling question that came along, just going by their own opinion, before a consensus was found.
"driveby downvote"... I like that :D

But DD is already taken (demolition derby)

8:15 PM
Double D is also taken.

or dunkin donuts

DBD. ;-)
or DBDV.

Or DrByDoVo to make it really obnoxious.

yeah some people really are doctors by downvote
2

Pronounced doctor bye-dough-voe

8:18 PM
Dr Bydovo.

Or extend it into another phrase: Don't buy Debbie vodka.

8:56 PM
Anyone good with Ruby here?
I think I've got the basic controller in place (it needs some refactoring though).
Does anyone know the best way to set a timeout when waiting for another process (in the form of an IO object) to write something to STDOUT?

@m.buettner I'm going to guess that asking for input doesn't work like it works in most other languages? In Java you just do something like stdin.getNext(); and the program just chills while waiting for input.

@Rusher yeah basically I'm doing that. But I don't want to chill.
At least not forever.

@m.buettner I don't know that it's the best way, but I set a loop (with some ms sleep) to check if there was anything on stdout. Check the time in the loop. Once there was something there, grab it all.

I tend to see things differently than other people. For example, I always thought this was a sideways flying nun:

@Geobits Hm, I'm gonna have to look into some non-blocking I/O there.

8:59 PM
I guess spawning a thread and asking it to chill is out of the question or above what I call the "what I feel like learning right now curve" for Ruby?

I don't know if you have anything like available(), which non-blockingly just checks if something is there.

It was only this year that I realized that was supposed to be an eagle, not a nun.
