@Matt Hi.

@BESW hey

What's new?

Not a lot, the guy who plays the CE druid gnome went and bought heroes of horror so he could bite people

Q: Animal Companion issues

HungryForWordsOne of my players is a ranger and she is really, really into animals so every time I design an encounter with an animal as an enemy she automatically tries to tame it and make it a companion. As a result many of my encounters end up being far easier than they were meant to be and she now owns an ...

Accepted answer kind of quickly.

On the one hand, it's nice to wait to see what other people have to offer.
On the other hand, if it's the answer that helped them... that's not likely to change as more answers are provided.

3:25 AM
@BESW i can't screen cap my itunes (it's on a different computer) but my top 10 are: 1-6: 6 tracks off Frank Zappa's Absolutely Free (not surprising since it's the first album to play when i plug my ipod into my car, and my totals include ipod syncs) then 7&9 are songs from the Aquabats and 8&10 are songs from That Handsome Devil.
and it doesnt stop there! Frank Zappa, The Aquabats and That Handsome Devil are the three bands that make up my top 50 most listened to tracks in itunes (With the exception of 1 Beck song that comes in at #48)

@BESW It's an answer that sounds like a good idea, but I'm not inclined to think the issue was resolved in a matter of three hours from ask.

4:11 AM
I used to keep all my music players (phone, foobar2000 on 3 PCs, YouTube, Spotify) linked to Last.fm to keep track of my listening habits, but I've pretty much given up. Some of my players are counted, some aren't.
Still, my top artists haven't changed much in the last few years.
@BESW Hear my highly caffeinated roar!

@lisardggY I'm here to chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum. [sits down quietly.]

Basic D&D - free pdf with some of the rules (or, rather, promise of one). Now that's interesting.

[squint] See, now, that sounds more like that they were preaching from the start.

Also, aaaargh, name reuse leading to confusion and utter collapse of ... if that's even a thing.

@Magician Reminds me of when Microsoft started released free Express versions of their development tools. Just because you're the 800lb gorilla doesn't mean you should let other players chip away at your base.
Microsoft learned that the hard way, and apparently so did WotC.
@Magician No, it seems we're cool, at least as far as tags are concerned

4:25 AM
The only currently active tag with the word "basic" in is .

Q: Post-mortem for a question relating to female players and role-playing games. Why and what now?

AvestronOk. I have to admit that I am quite angered at the response gained to this question Quite frankly it is my belief that this question was mistreated. I shall go into the question in depth - recalling as accurately as possible the original format of the question. This is not because I hold grea...

or more the original question that was closed
@besw just hit season 2 of stargate

@JoshuaAslanSmith The framing was... flawed... and it's a general discussion not suited for SE's format. The intent was genuine and useful.

Oh I agree but I honestly think that its more of a cultural issue vs a game design one
theres plenty of games like fate that revolve around story vs. combat for example

I agree. I thought the original question flawed and rather naive, but not as offensive and misogynistic as others though.

I mean my wife consistently was like, "I just wanna punch stuff" whenever we played 4e, she never wanted to actually roleplay, just do combats

@JoshuaAslanSmith Exactly; the question "Why does there seem to be a dearth of women playing RPGs?" is solid. He simply presumed that the answer was one of system design rather of culture.

4:53 AM
lots of women play boardgames and party games and an RPG is simply both together, I dont think theres a mechanical issue but the stigma of RPGs and the sort of people who play rpgs
yep

Which, frankly, is symptomatic of the problem: so long as we approach the issue of women's participation in speculative fiction as one of "appealing to women" rather than "being inclusive of more varieties of people," we're starting from a faulty base which presumes women aren't like other people.
The links I gave in this comment deal with otherising in speculative fiction, whether it's based on gender or race, and whether it's about authors or actors or players.
It's got entries like the author who discovered that some people think it's irresponsible of her to depict a woman who has solo adventures but never gets sexually assaulted; or the very troublesome fact that the language used to justify goblin-killing is nearly identical to that used to justify real-life racial violence.
These are issues which come fundamentally attached to such conversations, and SE just isn't built to support that kind of topic in a nuanced enough way that it will be productive.

If the guy has an actual challenge he's facing in his own life with the topic, we might be able to offer some useful answers.

yes
hmmm did anybody say on those repsonses that theorycrafting rpg.se questions is way less productive than actual problem questions

cool
thats the most important thing
@besw man the season one cliffhanger into season 2 when their on the ships is ridiculous

Q: Do we need d&d 5e basic tags?

GMNoobWizards just announced D&D 5e basic which will be a free pdf. Should this be a seperate tag? http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd%2F4ll%2F20140527

5:26 AM
@JoshuaAslanSmith So, how's Storium working for you?

im liking it, sorry I havent made a move yet
been busy this holiday weekend
I thin the nature of our characters and our story led to a lot more narrator on player action though we probably shoulve interacted more in the coffee shop discussion

Mm. It's interesting to see.

and bedtime
talk to you later

My Atlantean Destiny game has a lot more character interaction.
G'night.

5:54 AM
If I want to completly change an answer based on new information is it better to make a new answer or edit my old one?

If it's completely different... new answer.

Thanks, just double checking.

1 hour later…
6:57 AM
Morning.

Morning

@JonathanHobbs [wave] The new character in Atlantean Destiny is the mind behind HASSAN the Eternally Friendly.

morninG.

even though it is kinda the opposite over here

Hi, y'all.

6:59 AM
Hey-ho.
Network is still down. Dev machine still down. Don't know why I bothered coming in to work.

@lisardggY Our network is on the fritz. :P
Can't get my mail (work mail)
oh, as I speak...
Network is fine again :P

@BESW Who is HASSAN the Eternally Friendly? I feel like I must know.

Do you remember the story of Splug the goblin NPC, rechristened Splat, who went on to father a clan of goblins known as "Friendlies"?
The clan did covert ops missions: they'd settle into an area that was going to be invaded and make friends with the locals so the troops would have local support.

@BESW I don't!

Alas!
Splug was a stock NPC in the Keep on the Shadowfell 4e module.
HASSAN, who felt that everyone was a friend he just hadn't met yet until proven otherwise (and who would unleash a can of butt-kicking if you were mean to his friends), defended Splug from the PCs who wanted to kill him (primarily Kamola, the half-orc bigot you probably do remember).
His actions taught the cynical Splug that friendship is a powerful force which he could control.

7:13 AM
@BESW I do remember Kamola :)

HASSAN's player had to leave the group after a relatively short time, but his impact on the campaign was far-reaching.
Prior to HASSAN he played a housewife who left her family to adventure because she had received a calling to become a Valkyrie.
Nobody was sure if she actually was divinely inspired, or just insane.

Urgg. Upcoming *Ars Magica* game on Saturday was logistically complicated, involving the party splitting into two parts, the main GM running for one group while I run a subplot to a second group, when the main complication is that one player has two characters, one in each group, so we figured we'll manage to synchronize around that.
And now that player is sick.
So either we completely rework the session as planned, or postpone.

Flashback RP session?

That's probably better than simply reworking.
We already had one of those when one player (me) couldn't make it a few weeks ago.

...flashside session?

7:25 AM
@BESW That sounds amazing. (Housewife to Valkyrie. I can understand why they might be confused.) HASSAN sounds fantastic. I am looking forward to this person's writing, and Major Major Major Major, a lot. I am already trying to decrypt what each of the Majors is for.

__NOTOC__ Major Major Major Major (hereafter Maj. Major for short) is a fictional character in Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22, whose name and rank is the title of chapter 9. Philip D. Beidler opines that "one of the novel's great absurd jokes is that character's bewildering resemblance to Henry Fonda". The other joke about the character is his name. The novel relates that Maj. Major was named "Major Major Major" by his father, as a joke. The addition of the rank of Major was the result of "an IBM machine with a sense of humor almost as keen as his father's". Heller echoes the eponymous c...

Aha. ;)
I was wondering if Major Major was an adjective for their rank, or if they were Major [ship] Major [rank] Major Major [name], being the Major of The Major.
Fritjof, not having access to any of this knowledge, is going to have an even harder time figuring this out.

naturally.
(HASSAN was also named for a character from popular fiction.)
(which may go some length to explaining why he is always capslocked.)

@BESW I will have to check this when I get home. :) Which I will now head to! TTFN!

ttfn

2 hours later…
9:50 AM
i have cooked and it is good
except for the noodles that burned to the bottom after like one minute of being left alone
@Magician and ; it's still going to cause a little bit of a headache sometimes, but at least we can tell as long as people stick to D&D Basic for the original version and Basic D&D for the PDF

i have not cooked and it is meh
raw noodles with cheese and hamburger buns

at least it's not Accelerated Dungeons and Dragons...

I can never catch that.

@Metool yum. but i highly recommend trying out the first after they've been in hot water. (but not the second after they've been in hot water.)

10:18 AM
@JonathanHobbs You appear to have been actively typing for nearly half an hour.

My old gaming site reopened. Character is still blocked. Still no ideas on new characters to do, in both sites. Mostly, hazy ideas on what kind of experience I do want (especially on the old site)

10:40 AM
@BESW it is a LIIIEEEEE
@Zachiel NOOOOOOO
YOU HAVE A FREE BILL OF DOING ANYTHING ELLSSSSSEEE
assuming this is the one you have eternal constant recurring grief over

@BESW wow XD

@JonathanHobbs The grief is not recurring. The inability to think of a new character I want to run is, however, and is possibly created by my past grief with some parts of that game. Also, me talking about the past grief is recurring.
@BESW oh, god. It really is.

There is a thing I call
"a healthy experience"
and it is not a thing you keep complaining about
if you keep complaining about a thing, it is a sure fire sign you should not do that thing, unless you are a fan of self sabotage and ensuring you spend a lot of your time miserable

Fine, let's find something in my life I don't grief about then
...
more "..."
...

10:45 AM
so your plan to address this is to do more of this, ok got it

Once a girl on that game told me that if I was so in need of making a powerful character I should have played a mmorpg instead, where no-one would have complained if my character was strong and not roleplayed well.
For unrelated reasons, I joined a mmorpg shortly thereafter
The f****** piece of **** would like me to spend all my free time farming, which I'm apparently very bad at. The same discrepancy between character advocacy and roleplaying expectations I found in the difference between glitching the game, gaining a better equip fast and not glitching for fear of being banned. It was no improvement at all.
I don't really know why this happens, but while I'm there fighting monsters I don't think about this. It's just when I stop and take a look at my inventory or monitor the auction house or other people tell me how fast they do things.
(just like in D&D when someone tells me "ding, I leveld up again")
and I'm all "can you please not tell me, please?"
So, what should I do in life to be happy about what I do? Because I have no idea
(By the way, I'm on said mmorpg, trying to complete my daily quests in the shortest possible time)
(which I could have started doing 1 hour ago)

@JoshuaAslanSmith I know you're not at that point in the series yet, but...

11:02 AM
@BESW plug all the plotholes

11:15 AM
I keep doing that! I log in the game, while the screen loads I tab to browse some site, then I go back and the game timed out.

@BESW haha.

@JonathanHobbs apparently, my way to deal with things that frustrate me is to keep trying until I get good at them.

@BESW But you will give him a spoiler anyway?

@InbarRose He's re-watching.

Oh. So just everyone else in the room then. :P
Although...
Has it been 10 years yet?
The rule about spoilers is 10 years.
After that there is no such thing as a spoiler. It's your own fault for not seeing/watching/reading/knowing

11:19 AM
He first died in 1994, and he first ascended in 2002.

So, it's been 10 years. (20 even for the death)
Spoil away!

What show are you talking about? I've never heard of this, let me go watch it... darn spoilers!

Stargate.
It's... a lot to watch.

I will start now, don't mention anything about it, especially not the movie. :P

Okay...
Well...
It all started with one movie, simply titled "Stargate"
Then there is a tv show Stargate SG-1.
With like 6 movies of it's own

11:26 AM
noooo spoilers!

Then Stargate Atlantis
With some of it's own movies
Then Stargate Universe. With no movies.
SG-1 has 10 seasons. Atlantis has 5. SGU has 2
Thats... A lot to watch

Oh, you mean Sliders 2.0?

Erm, no.

Oh Sliders alpha
my bad :P

11:40 AM
@BESW Oh I know, totally forgot about sam getting a baby gould in her in season 2, I mean how ridiculous to retread a plot they used in the pilot/episode 3
also totally forgot the nox were shown in s1 and that they basically never get shown again

12:02 PM
Morning

@InbarRose bookmarked I was jsut thinking about that as I fell asleep last night that not having everything on the air meant I needed to figure out which parts were contiguous

12:18 PM
so I'm sitting and waiting a half hour for my program to write a file, and then I see it didn't work, so I do it again... and then I realize I'm looking in the wrong folder.. ARG!
It's wierd that I thought sliders existed before stargate , I'm a bit dissapointed in that memory :(

@GMNoob SG-U, however, is totally Sliders 2.0 in concept.

@BESW Ok, that might be a good reason :)

Aside from that the two franchises have very little in common.

@BESW Quinn

12:34 PM
[squint] Aside from both of them having guys named Quinn, I have no idea what you mean.

(to that point Marvel's Agents of Shield has a guy named Quinn :))

Hmm. [scribbles notes]

"Characters named Quinn" an essay by BESW.

(and he's likely to be a significant baddie in S2 IMO)

I wonder if there's a Quinn equivalent to the Conspiracy of Daves.

12:43 PM
@BESW Explain!?

Oh, the entire world is ruled by guys named Dave.
It's a secret shadowy cabal of unassuming ordinary blokes.
Their headquarters has Mtn. Dew in the water coolers.

huh?

> Every man on Earth named Dave knows of this massive conspiracy, aimed at world conquest, which includes ex-MIT student Dave Barker and, for much of the strip's run, Dave Davenport. Dave Davenport is expelled for a time due to breaking 'Dave Law', having revealed the conspiracy's existence to Helen and Mell; as a result, others instinctively take to referring to him as 'David.' Helen later discovers that the topmost leadership of the conspiracy, the Circle of Five, are the ones who had hired her mother to kill Dave.
(thanks wikipedia, your my only hope)

And where is all this silly davepocalypse from?

@waxeagle Dude, serious spoilers.

12:46 PM
^Rat Queens, a very D&D and rather NSFW comic, has The Four Daves as one of the adventuring parties.

@BESW sry, forget that wikipedia is sometimes an overshareer

@Magician One of my players in Storium is using a Rat Queens character model.

3 lots of Creepy Bathroom Graffiti? What's that about?

Every time you play a card, it goes away.
So if you get an item or goal or what-have-you that you want to use on more than one challenge, you need a "stack" of that card.
She noticed some creepy graffiti in the bathroom of Ricky's Coffee Club, and now she can use that knowledge three times in challenges.
In Storium, the narrator presents challenges which can be met by the players using a number of cards determined by the narrator

Mmmmh so world domination would be quite easy to attain. I know someone working at the local General Register Office, changing my name to Dave should be easy.

12:54 PM
The kind of cards played toward the challenge determine whether its outcome is Strong, Weak, or Uncertain. If it's Strong or Weak, the last player to play a card on it gets to narrate the outcome; if it's Uncertain, the narrator regains control of the outcome.
For example, here is Arasys playing a Strong card (Mysticism) toward the Hunter Sortie challenge. There are still five more cards to go before the challenge is complete, so she narrates just a small part of moving forward in meeting the challenge:
We're currently waiting to see which player goes next on that scene; I'm expecting fun things from @JoshuaAslanSmith's character, because he's got a stack of Avenge Fallen Comrades cards to dish out against the lizardfolk.

yep I will be making a move at somepoint in the waking day
chances are after you have gone to bed though

Yeah, it's 2300 and I'm taking my dad to the doctor in the morning.
But I'm also expecting a friend to want help with his first post to the Atlantean Destiny game...

1:21 PM
@rojomoke Hi!

Q: D&D Next and "Theatre of the Mind" in combat

Neil SlaterMy group have been using the play test material for D&D Next. Our target play style for combat encounters would be to use battle boards roughly half the time (when there is enough of interest in play that the tactics are interesting), and to skip that with faster "cinematic" combat otherwise. We...

Wasn't Next supposed to be Theater of the Mind friendly?..

@Magician sure, but it's still D&D

Ok guys I have a question to settle an argument.

Well. 13th Age has done a hybrid approach wonderfully. You're expected to use minis, but not count squares. And it works!

Druid vs Wizard in Pathfinder in a forest. Who would win?

So it's a solved problem.

2:03 PM
both level 20.

Spherical Druid vs spherical Wizard in a vacuum forest?

@Magician the core rules are meant to play nice with grid, WYSIWYG and theater of the mind, but as such they arent optimized for theater of the mind
At least not in the way say 13th age is

@Magician Spherical?

@JoshuaAslanSmith That seems to be a missed opportunity, seeing as that was a major selling point.

@Aaron How close are they in the forest to each other, and are they aware they are fighting to the death?

2:05 PM
be interesting to see what the DMG offers in terms of rules modules

@InbarRose Um. They are aware of eachother and have had prep time so they can position them selves where they think they are optimal.

So.. the wizard could just summon some demons and retreat to another plane while the demons destroy the forest? (plus some fireballs)
Not much of a challenge.
Now.. if they suddenly meet eachother in a forest it's a much more interesting situation.

That is what I am trying to get through to my friend. He thinks the druid and Wizard are even in power.
@InbarRose Lets say that happens just so it isn't too easy for the wizard.

They can never be "even" in power.

2:08 PM
The answer is "it depends on their prepared spells". Seeing as they both have a lot of spells to choose from, there's no possible answer to a question that broad.

They can have similar power levels. But the Wizard has so much more versatility.

@Magician It is. It's just not rules lawyer friendly.

Instead of "both level 20" how about they both have the same amount of experience? Because Wizards often use xp for spells/crafting.. so having it still be level 20 would be unbalanced.

@InbarRose Pathfinder doesn't do the xp buy thing.

Well you didn't say pathfinder.
I don't know about pathfinder.
The balances are different.

2:09 PM
Druid vs Wizard in Pathfinder in a forest. Who would win?

So many stipulations

I know. but this is a very specific argument :)

Well if it's specific, give more specific details.

Sounds like a question for SE :P
since it's a specific question which needs a specific answer

2:10 PM
What is the druids animal companion?
How were the characters made?
Same amount of XP and Gold?
What supplement rules can be used?

How many rounds can the fight last for? (fire ball + rope trick = no Druid advantage)

Prestige Classes?

The druid is optimized to be able to walk into a forest and have an army. The wizard is battle optimized.
@InbarRose Nope. Strait wizard and druid.

In a general sense, I'm going to go with "whoever wins initiative", then.

So... Wizard with no prior knowledge of the fight?

2:13 PM
Let me set the mood. Waggles eyebrows

Because the question implies low levels of optimization, in which case it's all about the rocket tag.

Does the Wizard have Leadership? :P
Wizard: Haste, Stop Time, Constituation Drain, Finger of Death?

@Magician D&D in a nutshell

The druid and the wizard are old time enemies. Neither knows the other is in the forest and they suddenly run into eachother in the forest.

@Aaron They decide to arm-wrestle.

2:15 PM
Initiative is rolled. Wizard wins. (Later we can do a druid wins )

> Wizard: Haste, Stop Time, Constituation Drain, Finger of Death?

@InbarRose Sure?
Not familiar with those spells.
Only ever got to play a wizard to like level 10.

Well... Clearly you are ill equipped to judge this match if you are not familiar with high-level spells.

@InbarRose ...That is why I am asking more experienced people.

Well... Let me bottom line it for you. The Wizard will win. In almost all cases. Unless very specific conditions/stipulations/luck situations.
Once preparation is brought into the situation... it's harder to tell.. but generally - the Wizard.

2:42 PM
@InbarRose That is what I thought but I wanted someone with more experience to verify.
Thanks for the help.

2:57 PM
O.O at the last 4e question
0
Q: AOE spells that target only "enemies"

13ruce1337Q: What constitutes as an "enemy"? Can for some reason a pc declare another pc an enemy at any point? For example, we will take this first level Warden spell which puts spikes around an enemy that will only effect enemies: Earth Spikes(4EPHB3) The earth rises in concert with your attack, driv...

why on earth would you...

wut...I don't even...

I beg you pardon: "why on Oerth would you-"
2

hahahaha
yes its frustrating because enemy is not actually defined in the compendium
ally likewise doesn't have a glossary entry
sigh
0
A: AOE spells that target only "enemies"

mxyzplkYes. "Enemy" and "ally" are basically placeholder words for "the people you want it to work on." If a PC gets dominated and turns on you, you can just mentally move him to the "enemy" category and start spamming effects on him along with the rest of the opposing force - similarly, if you dominat...

commenting on an edition hes not a fan off and bringing D&Disms from other editions into it

why does it need defining?

@JoshuaAslanSmith Does his answer not answer the question?

3:13 PM
its a bad answer

@JoshuaAslanSmith well, his use case is defined enough to give an answer to the question (only if they trigger the power). But the conditions of ally/enemy are completely up to the DM
(and to some degree the party)
which makes it a social contract issue

trying to find some nice PHB1 intro paragraph stuff to illustrate what 4e is about even if the rules are non-existent on this issue

the lack of glossary information on ally/enemy actually would make for a very interesting treatise

like the issue with "what is walking"/ normal move speed stuff

@JoshuaAslanSmith I'm not sure previous editions were clear on this point either

3:21 PM
right I dont doubt that I think the ally, enemy, move issue is one of assumptions the designers had and took for granted

@JoshuaAslanSmith I have a feeling that if we wanted to understand those we might have got to all the way back or even further

uh yes totally
basically would need to get in the mind of the assumptions and cultural expectations of original oldschool wargamers and then move on from there as to how that influenced gygax
dudes got an open mind at least

Creating characters is just like finding a job: you know one probably exists out there but you can't find it.

3:47 PM
@zachiel you tend to make very particular character choices

Are you basing this on my contortionist character?
I want my next character to be effective in combat, which is kinda non-particular, for D&D. Maybe a real murderhobo. Hey hey hey I caould ba e hobo that murders monster- no, wait, real hobo have no money and I need some equip.

yeah basing it on that one character, not to demonize that character or you persay

Oh, don't worry. I understand where you are coming from but that character was an attempt to solve some problems I had with character creation and is an half-wasted attempt. It's basically an NPC, I like playing and displaying it but I don't feel ingrained in the game so I want it to keep being the exception.

Somebody suggested me to play someone with the same interests of the other players, so that we can go adventuring togheter

3:56 PM
what system you trying to decide on a character concept for?
party cohesion does help adventures

It's D&D 3.5, mmorpg sauce
this means I don't have a fixed party and part of why I made a character who was very individualist is tied to previous characters getting very involved with people who then disappeared.
Heck, my last character had a SO that suddenly disappeared and I didn't know if I could RP she was gone forever. I kept waiting, still no news of the player after 2 years. And the player had heart problems...
I got also suggested to find someone who wants their character to have a relative and play the relative
and to play something "more planar" - I'm not sure what that means, but I'm bad at tying characters to the setting.

4:11 PM
ah yes the setting/system you were telling me about before gotcha

4:29 PM
yeah, planescape setting is about adventures far away from home, in unfamiliar lands where alignment is solid and metaphorical gets real. For instance, if you're on a palce called the Outlands and you travel away from the Spire (a infinite height mountain), after some distance no matter how much you walk you never get more far. Because nobody knows what's outside so you can't really even conceive to travel to something that's not there.
Also, all travel takes 3-18 days. Travel from one of the nine circles to the next? 3-18 days. Traveling from anywhere to a specific city moving between the circles? Still 3-18 days, regardless of which circle the city is in.
I'm starting to envision a character that's used to live there. Like "what do you mean, one day of travel?" XD

lol
2 ways to approach this
mechanics or story
either pick the mechanics/class most interesting to you and then write a story that justifies them
OR
create a character story/idea first and then find the mechanics that best fit
or you can do both entirely separate but I feel thats less valid for 3.5

Yeah, very less valid.

hahaha
the joy of the separation of crunch and fluff in 4e is literally any character concept could be literally any class

I tried the mechanics first approach and it invariably leads to "why can't I get this on top of this unless I'm playing this story seed I'm not able to roleplay properly?"
I'm still bad at the fluff first approach but I fear it could lead to a new useless character
