2:00 PM
but I've never noticed - I only use it for my code, so the files are all very small

everything is slow

But it works well enough that Dropbox is going to have some serious competition once u1 devs start making apps for it.

@Alvar you're slow.

@StefanoPalazzo did u upload a 4.99gb film?

no i kid
i'm kinda in rage mode against the internet today

2:00 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix but still faster than you! :)

why would you want to do that?

@TheEvilPhoenix who isn't?!

@Alvar typically i am not

@StefanoPalazzo because there is a 5gb limit on u1! :P my lord

but with Microsoft involved...
well...

2:01 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix really?!
@TheEvilPhoenix we know what u mean :P

UbuntuOne isn't supposed to be a backup solution for your files, but rather cloud storage for things you need to have everywhere. I don't think you should use anything like u1 or dropbox for files larger than a few kilobytes. An external hdd or a nas work so much better for this kind of thing.

@Alvar <standard rage level due to how much is on my schedule> * <Hours to work with Microsoft Software> + (6*<systems running WinXP>) * <number of servers being evil> == epic rage level 5000000000000000
3

@StefanoPalazzo well if you want to sync stuff then you ahve to sue the "cloud"
@TheEvilPhoenix I know how you feel

@Alvar actually you dont

I had to use windows my whole time in school, then I went home and did the same thing but it took 1/10 of the time on my mac...

2:03 PM
@Alvar Why do you have to sue the cloud? Why sue anything?

a server i was working with several days ago bluescreened about 15 times

@TheEvilPhoenix well I do rage, kill

i threw the box out the second-floor window

@MarcoCeppi I don't remember writing sue the cloud.... strange
@TheEvilPhoenix wooohoo!!!!!!!! :D

2 mins ago, by Alvar
@StefanoPalazzo well if you want to sync stuff then you ahve to sue the "cloud"
cough

2:04 PM
use? :-)

Ahhh, use!
2

I stopped putting quotes around "cloud" when I started to write "cloud software" ;P

We need to use the cloud!
What use is it if we sue that cloud that we use?

2:06 PM
heh

@MarcoCeppi right use not sue... I was all exited that someone was mad at windows! :D

this is a bit weird:
I get 50gb of storage plus 1TB of bandwith for 8€/month

I love how the cloud is nothing more then something that has been around for the last 15 years.

now imagine the u1 server was free software and you could just tell u1 to use your server - and there is no good reason why it shouldn't be

2:08 PM
i get dedicated server colocation + 1TB bw + 100Mbit uplink for $49.99 a month

How far PR will get you

@StefanoPalazzo wants that

lol

@StefanoPalazzo You've seen the open source clone of dropbox, right?

2:09 PM
@MarcoCeppi u1?

lol I can't access google +?!?!

@MarcoCeppi yeah I have. there are a few projects like that

I'm sure [you|anyone|someone] could write a sweet python wrapper for libsync and create a killer gui. I think having a self-hosted dropbox solution is the ultimate winner

just before I embarrassed myself: the ubuntu one server is proprietary software, right?! (upd yes it is)

2:12 PM
whoot google+ is offline

@Alvar i take it you are to blame
:P

@StefanoPalazzo Yes, but it has public APIs
I keep getting so close to getting this kernel stuff done. Then I get stopped about not having a changelog

@Marco packaging, or just compiling?

Trying to make a src package to upload to a ppa

@Marco i can help ya

2:23 PM
Oh? please

@Marco did ya happen to read through my lesson in the classroom on packaging>?
i think it was bookmarked
both sessions*

It's not a standard package, it's the Ubuntu-lucid kernel
It's structured in a way to upset me at every turn :)

did you run the package building system?
you still need the debian/ directory

I have one
and I just created the control file

is there a changelog file in there?

2:25 PM
no

you'll need to make one
lemme grab my examples...

RIght, but I need the existing kernel's changelog

because regardless of package type

I can't just make up crap

so grab it?

2:25 PM
From where?

grab it from the package in the current repos
hell, lemme see if i can get ya the changelog
ya working on a GUI?
or just a cli>?
actuallyh
@Marco whats the package name for the kernel?
(and btw, if you're in GUI... Synaptic can get you the changelog)
actually
you'd need the source package for the kernels
which i think already exists...
aptitude changelog <package>
@Marco try that, see if you can get the kernel changelog

It gives me the change log for linux-meta

plus i need it for a package in a different ubuntu version :)

:P
which version

2:34 PM
10.04
hopefully after I get this i can build the src, upload to launch pand, and pray it doesn't fail the build :)

damn it now i want to know the answer to this!
goes to ask the question
did ya try running on a 10.04 VM?
tis the question i asked on this matter
@MarcoCeppi lets hope someone knows the answer...
becase if I have to dig around on launchpad i'm going to bring harm to my computer i check launchpad with
@Marco whats the kernel you're using to build off of?

@TheEvilPhoenix I'm building off the 2.6.32.71 ubuntu-lucid kernel

is there a package for that in the repos?
@Marco how much do you know about IRC and FreeNode?
because god-forbid we dont get an answer here on au...

2:49 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix enough

#ubuntu-kernel @ FreeNode

@TheEvilPhoenix It's the lastest stable release of the kernel

did you get it from git?
actually that's irrelevant
59 secs ago, by The Evil Phoenix
#ubuntu-kernel @ FreeNode
they would know... its the home of the kernel team
pulled right from their FAQ
theoretically you could just use the aptitude changelog linux-image-<version> if your version was released on the lucid repos
from a lucid system of course

@TheEvilPhoenix you a linq guru? i'm having a brain fart.

> if you clean the package first (fakeroot debian/rules clean), it'll appear. the master is in debian.master/changelog
From the horses mouth
@lazyPower nope. sorry

2:59 PM
@lazyPower wth is linq?

you develop in .net and you dont know what linq is? O.o
is really blinking

@lazyPower i'm not a super dev :P

haha

i have others in the dev teams :P
i kinda designed the base of the project, they did data processing and stuff
but i have to present it
because i'm the lead on the project team

nice

3:02 PM

A: Convert library of WMA tracks to MP3's?

AchuInstall Soundconverter and run Soundconverter from launcher or terminal The default conversion is .ogg change this to mp3 going to edit-> preferences under type of results. Format to MP3 And then click on add folder, then select your music folder. after you add your folder it will au...

yeah...
problem is i dont have code access

fail

well i dont have code access from the demo machine
so i have two of the devs with their laptop systems which have code access attending
to fix runtime issues
so i do have nearby support :p
in my blatantly annoying opinion, the project isnt ready for demo
but the higher ups want the demo so...
@MarcoCeppi so you found it?

yeah, kernel team got me the info
I built it wrong
I did fakeroot debian/rules debian/control instead of just clean

3:10 PM
which builds the control and changelog

well there you go

for future reference the changelog is stored in the debian.master folder

you've got the changelog

yup

i see. notice i dont have my linux system next to me with inet access
so i couldnt check it myself
sucks to be working in a restricted internet environment >.>

3:29 PM
Kernel Fun: lots of warnings, but seems okay so far

boo ya linux_2.6.32-33.72-openvz+ondina0 lives

compatibility... lucid?

yeah, I think I did something wrong, because it says distrobution is ondina instead of ubuntu

it would be stated in the changelog where the distribution is
first line

3:33 PM
ahh, oops
build one more time
that was a lot of fun though
So nice to see all that work actual make a package. Now I'll just do a test build make sure it compiles then upload to ppa and test on an actual lucid machine
then repeat for maverick and natty :)

well...
theoretically you can just copy the package over in teh PPA to a different version
i.e. lucid -> natty -> oneric
even backport it... lucid -> karmic
although that's not advised :P

Right, however, each release uses a different kernel version
I want to try to provide the openvz patch on the most recent/stable versions of the kernel

hehe rebuilding to the max :P

otherwise I could have avoided all this headache and just patched the 2.6.32 linus kernel and been done

3:37 PM
but that doesn't include all the crazy changes the kernel team has done
So for this to all work, all I need to do is run the dput command and put the source.changes file in the path?
and it'll put it in the ppa for building?

I need a "close" option that is "i could tell you, but then i'd have to kill you"
or even better, a way so that if the person reads the answer, they're brain-killed
yeah, that would work

I hope you are around @MarcoCeppi
Picture this
Im in front of a panick'd server
and i have to restart it without damaging
Pleaseee Help

3:52 PM
Finding Kernel ChangeLog for Ubuntu Kernels http://bit.ly/pyKgbT #kernel

@Amithkk restart it.
@Chipaca Close: Because I said so.

Exactly how?

@Amithkk How are you "in front of the server"

Im in front of a VGA terminal
With a keyboard for input

So you're physically at the server?

3:53 PM
Yes

Press and hold the power button

But i dont have the keys to get into the server room
aaand the sysadmin is ill

If the kernel's panic'd it's down and out. There really isn't much you can do except physically restart it
Time to break in then :)

Can i try a REISUB Thingy

Yes, you can try

3:55 PM
Alt+PrintSc+R+E+I+S+U+B right?

Alt+SysReq
Which is typically the PrtScrn button

There is no screen response but when I press R,E there is the HDD access light blinking
Is that supposed to happen?

So press and hold Alt+SysReq then while holding them, press R then E then I etc releasing before pressing the next

It restarted
its now showing a screen with a logo
now its booting

Good, now don't just walk away - let it boot if you can get back in check out the /var/log/messages and find out why it panic'd
Or it'll only happen again in the future

3:58 PM
Debian Server Lenny
wait doesent var require superuser?

depends, /var/log/* are typically world readable

bash: /var/log/: Permission Denied
Now that's the sysadmins work
anyways
thanks a bunch
Being the only one who uses linux in the office does have its perks :D
BRB gotta go home (5 mins)
Is back

Yay lunch time

Im finishing dinner
:D

4:13 PM
Anyone know how I create and add a new user to subversion?

adduser Zolomon subversion ?

@Amithkk That'll add a system user
@Zolomon I haven't used subversion in forever, sorry

cd to the domain’s etc/ directory

with any text editor, edit ‘svn-access.conf’ by adding a ‘permission line’ for ‘newuser’ to an existing repository (repositories are created in webmin)

add a password for ‘newuser’ to the svn.basic.passwd file with bash$ htpasswd svn.basic.passwd newuser (it will prompt twice for the new password)
@Zolomon Is this what you wanted

4:31 PM
@Amithkk Thanks!

We have a guy who is switching away from ubuntu due to low batt life

@TheEvilPhoenix I have a question about packaging if you're around

I heard the battery drain problems were solved in linux 3.0 anyway I can intall it on ubuntu 11.04?

Q: how to update linux kernel to 3.0 in ubuntu 11.04?

kabindrarecently linus torvalds announced the launch of next generation linux kernel i.e. linux 3.0. But i have no idea on updating the linux kernel to 3.0. i'm using gnome 3.0.1 in ubuntu 11.04.

5:37 PM
@Marco was at lunch. got about 20 minutes before a demo of a project. what's up

...and we're back.

@TheEvilPhoenix I got it sorted out, thanks though! I was wrestling with pgp

can everyone else see the gravatar images?
or is my net being filtered

The source is on it's way up to LP now

Is Gravatar down or something?
@TheEvilPhoenix: That answers my question.

5:38 PM
This happened the last time chat went dow

It was down for the last 10 minutes or so.
It was down for the last 10 minutes or so.

Looks like it's back up for good.

Something... is... broken...
Ah, a hard refresh fixed the Gravatar issue.

yeah

There's only three of us here :)

5:46 PM
Mm, most everyone else was idling probably
I mean, we're the ones who have a problem

wtfh system lag
i got d/c'd from the interwebss
fixed though
@MarcoCeppi invalid or nonexistant pgp key errors?

Yeah, I had a key but it was signing with it, and LP won't let me upload with out
I just used the -k flag and got it sorted out
When building I got this
Now signing changes and any dsc files...
 signfile linux_2.6.32-33.72-openvz+ondina0.dsc Marco Ceppi <marco@ceppi.net>
gpg: skipped "Marco Ceppi <marco@ceppi.net>": secret key not available
gpg: /tmp/debsign.blKbB3iW/linux_2.6.32-33.72-openvz+ondina0.dsc: clearsign failed: secret key not available
debsign: gpg error occurred!  Aborting....
debuild: fatal error at line 1256:
running debsign failed

@MarcoCeppi You think that's fun... try setting up a key with the Windows version of Bazaar :P

yeah i had similar issues, and i rewrote my default key information :/
:P

heh, well I just switched out of root (because I couldn't figure out how to give root the key I made as my user) and used debuild with -k KEYID

5:51 PM
:P
yeah that's the main issue...
you would need to fully export your key
then reimport it into root
easily done via the GUI
not so easy in other methods.

Well I'm going to need to re-export it because this isn't my primary machine
so I'll cross that bridge when it comes
> Uploading linux_2.6.32-33.72-openvz+ondina0.tar.gz: 520356k/520357k
Ugh, it's stuck at 1k left to go
Interesting...Are there different kernels for 64/32 bit? Or is it the same source?

6:31 PM
whoo
the demo went uneventfully
@MarcoCeppi not sure, might be modified slightly differently
but hey i'm not on the kernel team :P
although i'd think there would be different versions
so the kernel(s) can either utilize or not utilize the 64bit functionality

@TheEvilPhoenix that's what I thought, but there is only one trunk each. I think it depends on what arch it's compiled on.

Hopefully it will upload this time and I can move on with me day

:P
well at least i can relax a bit
the demo of that not-completely-finished project is over
and was uneventful :P

Demos and me never get along

6:38 PM
:P

They always find a way to embarrass me

Combine cabal and checkinstall http://bit.ly/oobwNP #deb

indeed
except in this instance... i was smart and had 2 developers with code access nearby
just in case the thing did explode
but thankfully nothing died today
:P
anyone willing to review some edits?
:P

7:12 PM
It did it again!
1K left to upload and it's stopped.

@Marco which?
the package?

the tar.gz

you able toupload it to anywhere else?
perhaps a personal web server or the cloud?

what do you mean anywhere else?
yeah: It's the same machine I'm on now

and it fully uploads?
to a remote location not in the PPA stuff

7:15 PM
well I don't use dput - I can rsync it if that's what you ask

ah
did you try using dput?
just to see if it works?
and whats the size of the damn thing

sounds like when my net card was acting up
froze with huge uploads
w000000000000000t! i just earned this:
ohey guess what I found
@MarcoCeppi this may interest you its about rsync and how secure it is:
4
A: native rsync protocol security

Thomas PorninThe native rsync protocol does not encrypt anything. It is meant only for trusted networks. To use rsync in a secure way, use it with SSH (see the "-e" command-line option) or over a VPN.

dput is stupid.

:P
so use ftp
they do support it i tihink

@TheEvilPhoenix How does dput authenticate you if you're just uploading with FTP? it never asks for my password or anything.

7:50 PM
Hi all, sorry for barging in and asking a question - but: I'm new on Ubuntu and need to connect via VNC to my mother's XP machine. It has WinVNC running, the machine has a public DNS name, and I know the port number. I can ping it from my machine. I was able to access it using WIndows, but I fail at Ubuntu's VNC, "Remote desktop connection". How do I connect to it with Ubuntu?

@TorbenGB You might need a different VNC package. Let me see if I can find out which

correction: the remote windows machine uses UltraVNC, not WinVNC.
thank you Marco. patiently waiting :)

Does it have a password or something configured on it?

Found this in the meantime: askubuntu.com/questions/4467/… Perhaps this TeamViewer is the way to go?
Yes it has a PW and a custom port number

@TorbenGB Is it just a password or is it a Microsoft Login?

7:55 PM
just a VNC password; not a login to a Windows user account

TeamViewer would be easier. I would also recommend - if you don't want to deal with TV - is to setup TightVNC on windows - since it has an Ubuntu client as well
Typically you want to use the same vendor VNC client - it avoids most problems

using same vendor software on both ends makes sense. UltraVNC was set up before I switched to Ubuntu.

@Marco it auths by the PGP keys used
or your lp login if you use sftp

So you'd suggest that I use teamviewer for now, and work on setting up tightvnc for long-term support, yes?

@TheEvilPhoenix Yeah, I just uploaded my new PGP key - I think that might have been the issue

7:58 PM
yah

@TorbenGB That sounds like a worth-while plan

@Marco yeah you need your PGP key on the ubuntu servers

great! Thank you very much Marco!

then verify the key as active in launchpad

gets to work on this...

7:58 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix yeah, just did the decoder email thing

and sign the Ubuntu CoC with that new key

@TorbenGB Good luck, you know where to go if you have questions :D

@MarcoCeppi i always resign the Ubuntu CoC with my new primary key(s) :P
so i'm biased in that regard

@TheEvilPhoenix I've already signed it thoug, it's too late now because I've started dput again. But I'll try that after it fails

:P
it shouldnt fail if the CoC isnt signed with the primary key
as long as the CoC is signed with a valid active key you're fine
