11:00 AM
well then guys since it's 7AM for me and I have to be up by 3 to go to my night classes, I am gonna head to bed. I'll see you guys later on

11:15 AM
bye!

11:47 AM
@BESW Good luck! Please tell me how the dog fares!

12:01 PM
Back. A loose neighbour dog picked a fight with my friend's tied-up dog. She and a local kid beat the neighbour dog back, and her dog came out with a lot of bloody scratches and toothy puncture wound on his abdomen.

Ouch :(

We helped examine and clean it, and he seemed shaken but not in shock or anything. He should be okay for the night and she'll take him to the vet in the morning.
Our friend has some mobility problems (she was beating on the dog with her cane), and needed us to help with the examination, and just to be there because it was kind of intense.
Once we got the dog cleaned and bandaged and it was clear he wasn't in shock, she felt like she could manage on her own for the hour before her husband gets back. She's a medical professional so it's not like she needed us to give her doggy vet advice.

Morning

Hey.

@BESW Why is this one considered spam? It is off topic yes but spam?

Two posts in a row that boil down to "Look at this site!" without the user having done anything else to contribute to SE or admitting to their affiliation with the site = spam.
@Aaron Does that help?

@Lord_Gareth i am at a loss for words

@BESW I don't think that second one was a look at this site though.
It seemed like an honest question and has a rather good answer on it.

12:18 PM
The question is fine.

@JonathanHobbs Sometimes I start to complain about how gender stereotypes against men have hurt my life, and then I remember that Western society treats me like a real human being and I sorta stop and thank my Y chromosome.

@BESW This one? Nothing is fine with this one.

But the same person who wrote the spam question I linked prior had also written a spam answer to that question. Perhaps Brian deleted it before you got to the link.

@JonathanHobbs That one is gone already

Then I remember that being poor dropped me out of the 'human being' club and I punch a Republican.

12:19 PM
@Aaron Yes, it is.

Because 'murrica

@BESW Ahhhhhh.
Yea It did the highlight thing on the question and not an answer so it must have been deleted already.

can I get some comment support?

A: Do Properties of magic weapons stack when using Two-Weapon Fighting?

Joshua Aslan SmithTwo-Weapon Fighting does not help a Monk Two-Weapon Fighting Prerequisite: Dexterity 13 Benefit: While wielding a melee weapon in each hand, you gain a +1 bonus to the damage rolls of weapon attacks that you make with a melee weapon. Two-weapon fighting only triggers on weapon attack...

4e peeps

@JoshuaAslanSmith Don't encourage a comment argument
If he disagrees that much then he can write his own answer
Oh, he has

@waxeagle vanguards weapon is an accepted example of an offhand weapon, it gets used in two weapon attacks
like horned helm it just triggers whenever you make a charged attack
Trigger is probably the wrong word to use though

12:23 PM
@waxeagle Sorry about the ping. Editing to ping the right person.

@JoshuaAslanSmith that doesn't seem line up with RAW though...let me see if I can find the source on that

Im just saying its very similar to horned helm in its wording
and the way headslot, armslot etc. properties work should also apply to weapon properties unless the property states when you make an attack with this weapon hit with this weapon etc. stuff like that

Mmm. Thing is, weapons don't have "slots" to limit their overlapping use the way most other items do.

pulling the AV to look at the rules cite Andras is quoting
full cite:
> Many weapons have properties that provide a
constant benefit. To gain the benefit of a weapon’s
property, you must be wielding the weapon. Unless
specified otherwise, a property affects only the
weapon to which it’s attached. For example, a +2 cunning
dagger, which bestows a –2 penalty to an enemy’s
saving throws against your weapon powers, affects
only powers that are delivered using that weapon.
You couldn’t hold the weapon in your off-hand and
gain the benefit of the property on powers delivered
except that power wording seems to swing the other direction. It seems to specify this weapon more often than not which is an exercise in frustration.
does the property on Lucklender work with any weapon?

Oh, man, I love seeing a 1-rep user with the [Informed] badge.

12:35 PM
(seems like it would, but...)
@BESW :)

@BESW - So you were kinda busy last night when we were trying to talk Godstuff
[Pulls out Tome of Knowledge]

@Lord_Gareth Yes. You'll be glad to hear my poster was very well-received.
I only got one semi-ridiculous change request.

Prime Shot Weapon is another case to examine.

@BESW They wanted you to trim down the cult of people in the office that gathered to worship the poster?

@Lord_Gareth That was totally ridiculous.
I had my minions dump the offender in the abandoned men's room.

12:38 PM
Damn straight. No one gets to diss the cult.

No, they want me to blend the hair texture of the background with the texture of banyan tree roots.

....Wut

It is a little strange. Yes. But in context it makes slightly more sense.

There are four weapons in the AV that *don't specify* "this weapon" and have properties that apply to attacks. How does one rule in light of the fact that these are the *exception* but seem to fall prey to the rule I cited above....
Subtle Weapon, Thundergod Weapon, Vanguard Weapon, Lucklender
Checking AV2 to see if they're consistent
AV2 Battle Spirit Weapon
It seems to me that not specifying this weapon counts as "unless otherwise specified"? but that doesn't seem right

@BESW - But in all seriousness available to answer questions etc

12:45 PM
Sigh. 4e is saner and more consistent than 3.5. This is, sadly, a low bar to hurdle, but it has managed to get some good air. Most of the time.
3

but I swear there is a rule that says "don't assume that"

@Lord_Gareth I'm not even sure where to start.

@waxeagle its hearsay but every GM ive ever played with has ruled it as I said and they are super RAW GMs

@JoshuaAslanSmith I don't doubt it, and a straight reading of the power would indicate that it's a valid ruling, but that AV section is concerning. Going to see if it's supported in the PHB

@BESW Anywhere works. Wouldja like a link to the commonly-used ruleset? An example of a successful or semi-successful game?
A link to the wife's first game?

12:48 PM
hmm does wizards print all errata somewhere on their website?

@JoshuaAslanSmith yes

though compendium seems to say vanguard itself has never been errata'd

I've got the AV errata up

@Lord_Gareth Ruleset, I suppose.

yeah was just searchign through it

12:50 PM
As you know, I'm totally foreign to this game format.

no changes to vanguard and only widespread changes seem to do with double and stout weawpons

subtle was changed to "with this weapon"

none of the other three were

that would seem to imply that they think that it should be explicitly stated
could always post on the WOTC boards and submit a WOTC help ticket on it both of which are pretty iffy

12:54 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith It would, unless you're like me and have decided that Wizards should never be given the benefit of the doubt ever about things which rely on them following simple patterns established by themselves.

@BESW -> plothook.net/RPG/showthread.php?t=19734 <-Some specifics (like the time it takes to refresh ACTS) won't be the same, but these are the general rules from which most of our god games then deviate
The concept of 'prayer' being the most commonly altered one

PHB1 has no clarification on magic item properties. Let's try the RC

@Lord_Gareth Yeah, I'm gonna have to read that when my glazes aren't eyeing over.

The RC makes no mention of the AV text. I'd be willing to consider it anomalous

@BESW Fair enough

12:58 PM
@waxeagle yay though its not gonna help the rep on my answer

I had a whole evening of Grown-Up Things To Do, and then my friend's dog went and got chewed up.

@JoshuaAslanSmith maybe remove that particular section and ask it as it's own question?

Ill probably delete the answer nothing I said in it was different from other answers except that

I'm pulling my DV as it's otherwise correct and the rules are fiddly

but I will ask it

12:59 PM
[Wonders if he wants to re-read the Cradle]
That world ended up as a lush, vibrant, life-filled hellhole where everything including the non-sapient minerals was maliciously attempting to murder everything else.

@JoshuaAslanSmith my answer is going to stand on the fact that the most recent publications don't contain it, it's only in one place when magic item property rules are detailed in several other locations and it's just an example of Wizards being fiddly
which is relatively rare in 4e

:o/ My favourite Savage Worlds forum is currently being hit by an ongoing and extensive spam attack, making it really hard to use the site effectively

@Phil invite them here! we have extensive anti-spam protections hre

1:04 PM
The trouble is that all the moderators are US based, and spam has to be removed manually

"The Manual Spam Removers" would be a good name for a band.

lol

...am I awake enough to make hot chocolate? [pokes self]

The answer to that is always 'yes'

How could it possibly go wrong?
My shiny new keyboard is wonderful to type with

1:10 PM
ooh whadya get?
I bought a new desk yesterday for my home office on KS...we'll see how it works

£120 seemed a lot, but it is totally worth it

@Phil for a nice keyboard it's within reason.

@waxeagle Yah, its perfect for touch typing - I'm currently trying to retrain so I can do audio transcription
at or around 70wpm at the moment

@Phil cool.
not sure what my typing speed is these days, it's probably pretty good, but I'm pretty error prone on the keybaord

1:16 PM
yeah, I was having problems with our old, really nasty keyboard where keys were sticking and generally affecting accuracy

@waxeagle ...is that some kind of meta-Swifty?

yikes

it was also really bad for strain on the fingers and wrists

@waxeagle Ive got a all staff work meeting to go to (DREADING IT) but ill probably post the question about the exclusion case weapon properties when I get back. Ill ping you when I do

@JoshuaAslanSmith Thanks, take your time

1:16 PM
I wanna buy a hardcore gaming keyboard so bad
my wife is like "100 dollars for a keyboard?"

never seen the point in them really - but I guess I'm not a hardcore gamer :o)

I've tried a handful of different keyboards and the best one so far --as odd as it seems-- is the Mac laptop keyboard.

I got a MS Natural for about 40 about a year ago and love it

...wait, there's an RPG based on The Prisoner?

interesting...is it a MWG Cortex+?

1:23 PM
I'm trying to track it down.

I found it from an off-hand reference on, of all things, the Wikipedia page for the typeface used by the show.

from 1989

(Sometimes I forget how much being a graphic designer has influenced me, and then I realise that when looking up TV shows I also look up the fonts they use.)

1:24 PM
Of course it's GURPS.

but it's entirely source material, so you could probably import it to anything

@besw ever watch poirot?

@JoshuaAslanSmith And then I sit there going "Hm, I wonder why they tooks the jots off the i and the j in Albertus for that show?"
@JoshuaAslanSmith Not recently.

1:25 PM
I just showed it to my wife and she had and artgasm over the intro

Seriously, though, look at the spread on Albertus use. It's got a serious SF/F pedigree.

Shes an interior designer and I went to undergrad for screen writing but we both have a solid aesthetics and design grounding as part of required core courses and we talk about typefaces all the time
and yes that is a serious pedigree
obviously the most notable entry is the buffy the vampire slayer boardgame

@JoshuaAslanSmith Aaaah! Poirot is caught in an anomaly!
That is some of the most aggressively Art Deco stuff I've ever seen.

Don't get me wrong, I like Art Deco, but--save some for the rest of us!

1:30 PM
The train is like "WAKE UP AND SMELL THE DECO"

Probably my favourite opening sequence is the title reveal for Alien.

despite only getting 3 hours of sleep last night, the 11ish I had the night before seems to have corrected the funk I was in from last week so Im kind of hyper in general
I always wish blade runner had better titlecards
everything else about the film is perfect

@waxeagle I find it difficult to reconcile this with actually playing a game of The Prisoner. What with one of the main points being that none of it was solid.

I think casino royale may be the best intro Ive seen though the typeface is nothing to write home about youtube.com/watch?v=Eje28TK4D00
@BESW If paranoia and fate had a love child?

@JoshuaAslanSmith Maybe Paranoia and Dogs.
@PaulA.Clayton [wave]
I need to head to bed, taking my dad to an appointment in the morning. Goodnight, allay'all.

1:36 PM
g'night

@BESW Salut. You folks have been busy since I left (trying to read the log). Well, good night.

2:08 PM

That is an adorable avatar.

2:26 PM
The badass of this week is badass. XD

2:36 PM
There's never too much sleuthing on this page

2:55 PM
@Aaron wow. nice.

@InbarRose This site amuses me to no end.

Q: Is there software that can help build a character portrait?

mattrumaThinking of something like the MMORPG games use for building characters ... is there anything like that available outside of a MMORPG game?

@GraceNote borrowing our randomizer again?

@C.Ross Yep!

@room denizens thoughts on that old question's value?

@C.Ross what close reason do I pick?

3:00 PM
@waxeagle your choice or historical lock?

@C.Ross I don't think it's worth a hist lock
"Too Broad" fits well

I think it has value.
It might not be a good question, or a good fit to the rest of the site.
But I think a lot of users that use RPG.SE would like to know that.
And if that question doesn't exist.. people will just ask it again.

@InbarRose That in itself doesn't justify keeping it open.
Many questions that are closed 'have value'

I am aware.
I didn't say "don't close it" I was answering C. Ross's question of "what are my thoughts."

If we leave questions open that don't match the site requirements then it sends a very mixed message
@InbarRose Ah, apologies

3:05 PM
It's alright :)

it's a question of whether it has enough value to merit an historical lock

That's just one of my main high horses on this site

What is a "historical lock" (I can pretty much guess, but would like to be sure)

Good question - I have no idea

locking is generally used for content disputes/edit wars to freeze things in place while decisions are hashed out on meta (it's a pause button of sorts). It prevents voting and editing and generally just freezes a question in place

3:07 PM
@InbarRose it stays like it is forever, no new edits, answers, etc, with a message saying "this is kept for historical value only"

A historical lock is similar, it's just permanent and freezes things with the message that "this isn't what we consider a good question, but it has value so we're keeping it"

@waxeagle historical lock though is for this, it has some value, but we wouldn't allow it now; also if it's linked to from the internet and we don't want to break links

it's sort of like framing particularly notable graffiti.
3

I don't think it's valuable enough for that personally

hello everyone

3:09 PM
hiya

hey

It seems to me that it's borderline on historical lock. But mainly because I can't think of a better close reason. "too broad" doesn't fit. the answers are perfectly suited.

closed for now
@InbarRose have you seen the list wars?

@C.Ross erm, I guess not.

A: Are questions about the mere existence of games on-topic?

Jonathan HobbsSE is meant to be a specific sort of reference. I'll quote our What types of questions should I avoid asking? guidance, which is consistent across the entire SE network: You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face. Most pertinently here: we are...

the latest summary

3:11 PM
Heh, it comes up over and over again

but the war has raged on SO, and was largely won by @GraceNote on gaming, though some pockets of resistance remain, including our very specialized narrow game recs

which some of us would gank in it's sleep if given our drothers

speaking of that @GraceNote can you put our banner request in the queue, we have a consensus on that text?

Just read this (a story of 4 low level characters controlled by 1 player visiting a high level party in a chaotic evil game) and found it so hilarious that I thought I had to share it with someone. My facebook friends aren't really into D&D so I figured here's the best chance to get someone to see it who'll enjoy it as much as I did. So if that sounds like something you'd enjoy here y'all go: paperspencils.com/2011/11/26/goblins-redux

@waxeagle I know how you feel, but I've seen a few good ones, and we do have strict criteria

3:13 PM
@C.Ross its the only thing that makes it palatable. My big fear is that it's going to get unmaintainable.

aye

The issue I have is that because there are clearly differences of opinion on it and its application, when newish users post questions where there is an issue for this reason, the messages they get are really mixed

Well... I gave my input - back to lurking.

and you get the same arguments rehashed over and over again

@Phil that's where the post banner would really help

3:15 PM
Indeed

@C.Ross Ah, okay
Which copy did you decide on?
Ah, D7's answer got it

@GraceNote anyway that can be automagically tied to the tag?

I don't think so because it's applied to the question itself, so it's a separate entity to the tag and the tag is really easy to add and remove to things, so we'd need equal measures to add and remove the notice each time the tag changed. And that could make for some really messy post histories since there is no 5 minute grace period on tags.

gotcha

3:37 PM
@GraceNote I think someone elsewhere chimed in saying they had it ...

Hence why "think" is italics - I might be wrong.

on a side note, @GraceNote should meta requests for tags be or

Define 'meta requests for tags'
If you mean like retag-requests, I always went with "support if it's a sure-thing and you just need it done, discussion if it isn't".

I sense the presence of a power that I have not met before.

@GraceNote "I don't have rep to create tags, please create tag some game no one has ever heard of"

3:46 PM
@C.Ross Support if it's a sure-thing and you just need it done, discussion if it isn't.

@GraceNote thanks, some re-tagging to be done there ...

@Lord_Gareth Hey there

is for changes the community/mods can't make, as I understand it

@GraceNote Hail unto thee etc so forth bird thou never wert. Welcome to our little corner of the Stack.

@Lord_Gareth Grace is no stranger

3:49 PM
@C.Ross She is to me :p

@C.Ross It's usually for actual changes to the system, yes. If you just want help from people, that's what "support" is for.

hello everyone

Hello, @JoshuaAslanSmith. WE MEET AGAIN
<-May be racked out on lack of sleep

hahaha
that was me the day before so I understand it

@Lord_Gareth me and my friends call that being slap happy.
Your brain to mouth/fingers filter has disengaged and crazy stuff surfaces. Usually some of the funniest stuff said is in this state.

3:56 PM
Well yes but crazy stuff emerges from me when I'm sober.
It's just that this chat gets the undying rage stuff because, well, Q&A format.

4:25 PM
If someone says they're going to run a published campaign, is it reasonable to expect them to run that?
2

@C.Ross yes?

a current campaign started out as Kingmaker but just went Mythic at level 3 and into the feywild ...
and frankly I may not have played if I thought it was going to be that kind of a campaign

4:52 PM
Yeah that's kinda rude.

Agreed

I suggest a strong dose of walking into the next session with a nerf chaingun loaded with pre-soaked darts
And unloading wet darts on everyone

or put your sword through the table a-la Unicorn City
(also, who has a sword at the gaming table? w.t.h.)

Alternately, threaten to invite SKR to the next session
Watch looks of utter terror form

@Lord_Gareth SKR is the pathfinder writer correct?

5:09 PM
@Aaron He's a Pathfinder writer, though as of this month he is no longer affiliated with Paizo

@Lord_Gareth Whoa. Source?

@Metool His own blog, confirmed from Paizo. They announced it before it happened.

@Metool @Metool Hey hop in the pathfinder room when you have a moment.

but everyone else seems good with it, alas...

@Aaron [blink] oh right...

1 hour later…
6:46 PM
Is anyone aware of a simulation-heavy game that is also very fast? I know this is generally a contradiction in terms.

7:02 PM
@DampeS8N LIFE
I doubt that is the kind of game you are looking for but that is all I got XD
By simulation what do you mean?
@waxeagle DM says your gonna die. Run like hell!

7:17 PM
@Aaron In a simulationist sense. A game that is trying to simulate a reality rather than facilitate stories or maintain a balanced and fun game.

@DampeS8N Hmm. Sorry I don't know anything like that.

I'm working on a kind of primer RPG class for TBC that will expose players to the 3 basic kinds of games in 3 different settings if possible and otherwise give players as big a bite of the hobby as can be taken as quickly as possible.
I've pegged Fiasco as a fine example of Narativism that is pretty fast and there are so many obvious choices for Gamism that I can pick just about anything, but will probably chose 4e D&D just because everyone will be familiar with it conceptually as for most newbies D&D and Roleplaying are synonyms. But finding a Simulationist game that won't just take forever to demo is proving very hard for me.

7:41 PM
I will never make fun of the swiss army knife again badassoftheweek.com/index.cgi?id=31684493594

1 hour later…
8:43 PM
@DampeS8N I think it's important to remember that "simulation" is about re-creating a reality, not our reality, and in that light it's possible to find a game which is simulating something that only needs quick-and-dirty rules. Maybe Don't Rest Your Head or Mouse Guard or My Life with Master?
(Also remember that the sim/nar/gam trifecta aren't mutually exclusive, so just because a game is heavily narrative doesn't mean it's not also simulationist.)

8:56 PM
Realm Guard is Mouse Guard for LotR.
That could be an interesting sim.

Hail unto thee @BESW

Hey.
Getting ready to go take my dad to an appointment.
@DampeS8N The GNS approach to games is outmoded and replaced in all but the most casual gaming conversations not just because people seriously misunderstand it--the whole thing is also kinda silly. Any game that tries to simulate something other than a game is simulationist. EVERY franchise-based RPG, for example.
You can run them in GURPS The Prisoner or Cortex Leverage or Spycraft SG-1 or Unisystem Buffy, any Cthulhu system, either Doctor Who system, or any Dragonlance supplement for D&D.
With that in mind, I'd seriously reconsider whether GNS is really the appropriate way to introduce people to RPGs, especially if you're introducing the three elements as opposing options rather than dials that each system turns up and down independently.
There are, perhaps, more useful divisions to make in the RPG landscape.
For example, the role of the GM, from GMless (Flying Temple), to co-conspirator (Fate), to neutral arbiter (GURPS), to malicious trickster god (Paranoia).
Or the role of fictional positioning, from fiction-defines-mechanics (Fate, Lady Blackbird) to mechanics-define-fiction (D&D 4e).

1 hour later…
10:32 PM
@BESW Agreed. I don't plan to cover GNS itself but to spotlight 3 different systems that tend to lean in those directions simply because it will lead to diverse feeling systems. I agree about spotlighting a variety of GM roles or lacks thereof. While outmoded GNS is still pretty useful for describing the sort of game I need to fill this slot because it creates a trichotomy. I need 3 games.

10:53 PM
@BESW (Playing GNS Cop for a sec here.) They are effectively mutually exclusive. Because those are "creative agendas." You're thinking of GDS categories.
@DampeS8N The "classic" answers would be GURPS (get someone who knows GURPS and how to tune it to a particular situation) or Traveller.
If you are modeling the trifecta of "game with tactical minis stuff / freeflowing narrate-stuff game / game with rules that model stuff."
I guess it really depends on the kind of coverage you want, though.

What's goin on folks?

@BESW (Apparently I can't edit things now?) ... You are talking about GDS-style categories.
@MC_Hambone The usual activity lull. :)

@AlexP hahaha right on... I keep Odd hours for the US... so I am used to it :D I just noticed there were a few people in here :D

Well, I could imagine 4 pm on the west coast being prime loafing time.

11:17 PM
probably, its 7PM for me but my college forced me into night classes this semester so I get up around 3 and have class from 5-630 on some days and then 5-930 on others
so I am up from 3PM to 6-7 AM
also I FINALLY GOT MY NEWEST RPG MANUAL!!!
been waiting for this book for like 9 days now

11:30 PM
@MC_Hambone What'd you get?

Spaceship Zero
the reviews I read say it's a wild and zaney, mad-cap adventure in the style of a 1950s space sci-fi radio play
ala Buck Rodgers or Flash Gordon or to a lesser extent Star Trek TOS
