Such informative. Very insight. Wow. — tylerl 32 secs ago

Hey everyone. I know a security. Commence wisdom dump:

A: What to do with the shared secret?

EBFEYou may want to look into providing some sort of forward secrecy for additional security measure. DHE and ECDHE protects transmission being decrypted even when the private keys are stolen (in PKI infrastructure). Although if implemented incorrectly, this could happens... :)

@tylerl ALL TEH ACRONYMS

I'm sure I should be nicer to the n00bs, but really.

Yes, you should be.
I get what you're trying to say, and I'm the first to point out that this just looks like reciting an article teaser, but there's no need to antagonize a new user over it.

@FEichinger Yeah. It was between that an flag-for-delete. Maybe both. What's so grating is that it's not even moderately relevant, and howthehell did the goto fail get in there? Why why why why.
Here's the problem, summed up in a decades-old dilbert strip:

4 hours later…
4:22 AM
@tylerl You know what's the best part about Apple's goto fail? That it is very aptly named goto fail.

4:45 AM
@TerryChia My favorite part of the GnuTLS bug is that they fixed it by changing goto cleanup; to goto fail;.

@tylerl Yeah, hilarious all around. :P

Morning

@LucasKauffman Morning. How was the interview?

Good actually guy seems eager to learn

Neat.

7:08 AM
'The light from those millions of stars you see is probably many thousands of years old' is a rare example of laypeople substantially OVERestimating astronomical numbers.

@LucasKauffman Does he also know what he's doing?
Jesus. tempted to validate those flags for no other reason than because his avie is soooo douchey.

Q: Is there an idiom or euphemism for when someone has an average/small penis but knows how to use it?

millimooseReally, what the question title states. In my language there's a more "flowery" phrase to say "size doesn't matter". It would roughly translate to "even a small clown can work in the big top" – I'm looking for something that tries to maintain the wit of the "small"/"big" antithesis.

@tylerl it seemed so, he's done some testing at his own school and to my surprise actually asked permission first
@tylerl plus diving into basic CS knowledge he did above my expectations

@AviD and you're linking that in here because.....

@LucasKauffman sounds like you found a good one. (1) interest (2) aptitude to figure it out (3) attitude, asked permission
@RоryMcCune hey, I wasn't going to call @Adnan out on this, figured he could stay unnamed.
6
and because I found it hilarious.

fair enough :)

@AviD I bet we could give the people over at ELL a run for their money when it comes to euphemisms.

8:39 AM
@TerryChia that's english.se, not ELL.se.

@AviD Oh. Damned confusing site names.

its like CS.se vs CSTheory.se.

@AviD Heeeeey.. that can't be me. I don't know how to use my small penis.
3

> it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog
right, gotta get back to the kitchen and do some cooking.
no, that is NOT a euphemism.

@AviD How can that be a euphemism?

8:45 AM
@RonanMurphy "It's not the size of the boat, nor the motion of the ocean but rather how well the guy uses his penis." That's how my grandmother used to say it. ;-p — David M 15 hours ago

@Kisunminttu See what they're saying about me? :(
@TerryChia His grandmother was so nice to lie to him.

@Adnan I found your homepage http://www.micropenis.info/
Ahaaa! I knew that wasn't the first time my small penis was mentioned here

@Adnan in this room - there is always a way.

@CodesInChaos Any more clues on this "secrecy capacity" thing? Very conflicted results from Google

Might be related to noisy analog signaling and something about information theoretical security (computational security is enough for me).

> Secrecy capacity: The fundamentalist limit on the amount of information that can be transmitted reliably so that an eavesdropper cannot decode the message.
Although it seems like an actual thing (all mathy and stuff), but to me it doesn't make any sense. Why should there be a limit on the amount of information that can be transmitted before a 3rd party is able to decode the message?
@Thomas Help, please.

10:47 AM
Limits can make sense in an information theoretical security context.
But there is no public key equivalent of the one-time-pad, so I don't really get how this related to McElise

11:41 AM
"morning"

@TildalWave correct

@TildalWave It's 7.45PM. Get your timezones right dammit!

@TerryChia No! My timezone is fine, I have atoms telling me so, so get yours sorted out! :P

you should

Q: French Letters and condoms

coleopteristRepartee (inexact quote) from a TV show: Person A: Now, we're going to be getting some letters from French people. Person B: It could be worse. You might be getting French letters. (laughter) Going by ODO and Webster, French letter appears to be a BrE euphemism for a condom. How did thi...

1:03 PM
Ok, need to run again... see you on monday
hopefully with more time and being able to answer some questions...

1 hour later…
2:16 PM
@Adnan I snickered.

2:42 PM
@Kisunminttu Is that your response, girlfriend?

@Adnan I was going to answer that some would consider me a bad girlfriend if I snickered.

@Kisunminttu Yeah, some did consider you a bad girlfriend.

@Adnan Aww, man!

@Kisunminttu Nah laughter is the spice of life. If you didn't laugh every time someone made fun of @Adnan's penis you could die from bottling all of that up.
2

@Adnan I guess I'm sleeping in the doghouse tonight...

2:49 PM
@Kisunminttu and, you're gonna have to cook your own fajita tonight.

The topic reminded me of something I learned at work today: there is something called Caverjet, which is an anti-impotence drug that you inject. Seems harmless enough, right? WRONG. You inject it into the penis itself. That seems harsh.
@Adnan Please tell me you're kidding me?

@Kisunminttu Really? The topic of my penis reminded you of an anti-impotence drug?
7
Jesus Christ!

@Adnan Is it a good or bad thing the topic of your genitals is dominating the star wall?
3

@TerryChia I don't know, ask the ceramic piece with googly eyes, @Kisunminttu

@Adnan No, it was a coincidence that I learned it today + the topic of "penis" was mentioned here. Of course it is not your penis that reminded me of it, and you know it! I was trying to change the subject a bit. Apparently that did not go as I had planned...
@Adnan Please forgive me for the miscalculated replies.

2:57 PM
@Kisunminttu Oh, come on. I was kidding.

I will put the shovel down now.

@Kisunminttu Please, what? (How do you address me when you ask for forgiveness?)

@Adnan Please forgive me, Master.

@Kisunminttu Forgiven. Now start preparing the vegetables and saute them. By that time, I'll be home.

@Kisunminttu You are officially welcome to the DMZ.
@Adnan @Kisunminttu no wait, you are officially King of the DMZ.
or, Queen. Whatever.
@Adnan is this another euphemism....? I am learning so many this week!

3:07 PM
@AviD No. Actual vegetables.
I'm hungry

3:21 PM
@AviD Thank you.

Q: Open ports and SSH Tunneling to shared hosting

Jugurtha HadjarI know your time is valuable so I'm not waiting for specific answers to my situation. I don't mind reading documentation, so pointers to something that converges would be greatly appreciated. I don't plan to waste anyone's time.. This is not an urgent matter and I'm doing this to learn (the "sit...

This part made me WTF:
> Issue 2: I scanned that remote machine recently and found about 17 ports open. I don't like that.
You don't like that that? Do you know why those ports are open? Do you know what an open port is?
me = facepalm

Close all ports, be surprised by how "functional" your machine suddenly becomes.

@FEichinger definitely this ^

Awesome. Qualcom called me randomly at work about RF shielding and somehow i talked them into sending me a free Snapdragon S800 development board. :]

@FEichinger After a re-read, just discovered that hes bitching about a shared hosting server at GoDaddy. It's not even his server, and he wants to close all the ports.

6:27 PM
@tylerl lol

@tylerl awesome :-)

If you really want to simplify your answer to the extreme (whatever for?), then you might consider replacing tens or hundreds of metres with kilometers. ;) — TildalWave 14 mins ago
BTW the Moon is soon to be full... and it shows in the site's activity too :)
@RоryMcCune so... we're relatively friendly bunch? hehe

@TildalWave hey I'm trying to encourage new people

@RоryMcCune ah no, no... well done! I didn't wanna sound cynical :)

@TildalWave heh cynical... in a security chat room.... never :op

:)
So what's been going on in here? I've been so busy today on space (don't ask!) I barely got any time to check on the fun side of SE

@TildalWave actually I've not been on that much but I believe there has been much talk of double entendres and @Adnan 's anatomy...
so same old, same old really :op

7:57 PM
well it is Friday, so I guess everyone wanted to keep it a light conversation ... and what's better then than @Adnan's anatomy? hehe

evening

hey @Lucas

what's up @TildalWave?

@TildalWave wel there's @LucasKauffman 's ... oh wait here he is, scratch that..

@RоryMcCune o.O
@RоryMcCune well you shouldn't be talking about God Zilla, he doesn't like that

7:59 PM
@LucasKauffman oh not much, I actually took advantage of a sunny day, only came back because it got cold after the sunset
readied my bike for the new season ... stuff like that
... even helped in the garden

I thought I was going into a nice 20 minute client meeting today and then grab a drink on a sunny terrrace. That turned into a frustrating inefficient 2.5 hours :(

oww sorry to hear that

@LucasKauffman blech that sucks on a friday...

indeed
but hey tgif

@LucasKauffman It's nearly -25ºC here, there's nothing to enjoy.

8:05 PM
where do you live? arctic?

America

ORLY?

Which, apparently, has decided to freeze over.
Well, to be fair it's more like -10ºC ambient with a wind chill

it's been really beautiful during last week for the most part of continental Europe ... early spring

And it's supposed to snow again this weekend. WTF

8:09 PM
we had temps at around 15-17°C during days ... some mornings there was still frost tho

@TildalWave yea I'm even thinking of planting my chiles early

@TildalWave It's 4pm and it's -10ºC. Lets not even talk about how cold it got last night.

@LucasKauffman no, don't ... you can always keep them warm enough but they need sunlight ... short days isn't good for them

@TildalWave That's true
@TildalWave oh I've got a UV lamp

with most seasonal stuff, when you say "early" it should be at most about a week before it's time for it, not much more
BTW, yup, I do gardening :)

8:12 PM
@TildalWave I've got some really nice seeds this year: Viper Butch T, Naga Jolokia, Mustard Habanero, Mora Chilis and chocolate habaneros
I still have a chocolate habanero, I lost all of my fatalli plants last year
I don't know why they died :(
I think I repotted too late

@LucasKauffman so do I ... 250W one, and it's not enough for full-grown ones so all you can do is germinate seeds and keep young ones under ... then what?

@TildalWave spring :P?
@TildalWave when do you suggest planting?
temperature isn't an issue btw, my mining rig is in the same room

@LucasKauffman well try, but I'd stick to the times it suggests on the bag

there aren't any :(

@LucasKauffman ah, OK which chillies?
IIRC time to germinate is late April to May for our parts of the world

8:15 PM
@TildalWave Viper Butch T, Naga Jolokia, Mustard Habanero, Mora Chilis and chocolate habaneros
and Fatalis
I made a really good hot oil from the habaneros and the fatalis last year

> From an early sowing this will normally be from May onwards in most parts of the UK

may it is :p

so slightly earlier for you

april
so end of the month

yup

8:17 PM
@TildalWave what chilis do you have?
@TildalWave or are you growing magic herbs?
I mean 250 w UV lamp :P

@LucasKauffman no idea, some homegrown seeds that always cross-pollinate with whatever neighbours have ... I think I need to buy new seeds this year

@TildalWave I used to have a nice one from peru, looks like a small bell pepper, smells and tastes like one
but after about 5 seconds it will burn you up good
it had really black seeds

@LucasKauffman no comment :) neah, I used to have some fun with that, but in some other country, some other times ... read: wasn't illegal

@TildalWave it isn't here either

@LucasKauffman here I think I'm fine with 2-3 plants, something similar to UK but it's too fiddly really, plus I don't consume any more I'm too old for that shit :)

8:22 PM
:p

my 250W lamp wouldn't cut it tho, it's high-K one so only good for germinating and growth, not for flowering
sure, it would make something, but not like with red (low-K) lamps
plus, the buggers stink like hell :))

yea indeed

8:40 PM
interesting idea, but for a security style project I'm a little surprised that their first implementation is in .... node.js

8:59 PM
well that is officially a PITA
for the curious, if you use owncloud and try to turn on the encryption, make sure to back up your data folder before doing it. Apparently they ingeniously didn't bother to write out the keys before they overwrite your data
so if the process crashes, you are left with unrecoverable files...
brilliant!
luckily most of what got nuked on my site is stuff that I either have backups of (though it's a few gigabytes to reupload) or it is stuff that had already served it's purpose and I just hadn't housecleaned yet

@AJHenderson nope... I use a pair of storage servers, drbd, luks, and rsync. Plus a snapshot system I built myself.

Oh man this code is so useful. I think i might even, like, put it into a library of some sort:
> int days=0;

DateTime date = DateTime.Today;
DateTime datex= date.AddDays(days);

9:45 PM
here's an interesting fact, astros and cosmos on ISS drink different water: space.stackexchange.com/a/3996/49
what's that quote from Dr. Strangelove about bodily fluids? :D
> I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
sadly, I can't use it in the answer :(

@TildalWave Why not?

@DavidFreitag it alludes to communists
i.e. someone might find it offensive

@TildalWave It could also be interpreted as derogatory i suppose... Oh well.

or that... but I really wanted to share it with someone, so who better than the DMZ netizens :)

Indeed ;]
