this is annoying..
i can't seem to connect via sftp to my server within the same lan. I know it works from home, and ssh works... but not sftp. created a firewall exception for cyberduck.. so its not that...

3:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek: Perfect question for Super User, eh?

@MarkSzymanski: not enough info to work out what's wrong... ;p

Q: Windows 7 Regional wallpaper packs: Where in the world?

SteveIs there a list somewhere of the geographical location of the Windows 7 wallpapers? I'd love to know more about some of these places, but apart from the region they're bundled with, there's not much information I can find. Any hints?

-

ok, its not cyberduck, its apparently either the 'work' location option, or the office lan.

If there is one thing that almost anyone will need to do sometime in their life with any operating system is upload a file. Whether it be an funny picture they want to show a friend, or a draft of a report they want to have someone proofread. On Mac OS X, there are two small programs out there that make this task very simple. They are CloudApp and Droplr. Both are menubar apps, and both are for the same thing: uploading files to the web. Like any other piece of software, these programs have their strengths and weaknesses, all (or most) of which I will cover in this post. …

Heh.

o0. darn that dratted AI. IT WILL END US ALL!

Clippy has got AI?

annoying idiocy ;)

I am so. Freaking. Tired.
Goodnight, everyone.

5:41 AM
@MarkSzymanski good night

1 hour later…
7:14 AM
@Sathya well... that was unexpected, although not really surprising
morning all

7:36 AM
@Sathya what? hmm. Looks like I might have something to distract me from Minecraft.

2 hours later…
9:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek are you a singaporean?

@bckbck: yes

@JourneymanGeek ooh
a fellow singaporean

lol
if you see anyone on the streets wearing an SU t shirt, there's a reasonable chance its me ;p

ah, i see
i'm waiting for my apple.se shirt to ship to me

@JourneymanGeek wait, you have a SU t?

9:33 AM
yes!

neato

eheh. OS X sadly will be the last major OS i'll dabble in at this rate
is planning to throw together a openindiana install at some point to mess with zfs
@Sathya: got it for being on one of the first two pages of users i think
gmm

i remember the shirt was also somewhere on the SE store

i found an Acceptable SIW replacement
@bckbck: that's new. also, hm. not the same as getting it for awesomeness XD

@JourneymanGeek ditto

9:37 AM
cpuid.com/softwares/pc-wizard.html is nice. rh-software.com/downloads/siv.zip is bizzare but useful for seeing per core speed precisely

hmmm
my neighbours wifi is lagging
gah

I hope you've got permission? :P

lol
stealing wifi in HDB is almost an art
i had a neighbour whose signal strength was ... dependant on the weather

@tombull89 they said yes, but there are too many routers using linksys as a SSID
so i randomly picked one
@JourneymanGeek i used to hang my wifi stick outside the window

i thought it was harder now, the stock Singtel routers are 2wire, and have wpa by default

9:42 AM
@bckbck haha, I see.

starhub i donno. they stopped giving wifi routers ages ago

@JourneymanGeek i thought it has always been WEP

@bckbck: 25th floor ;p
no. wpa.

@bckbck My brother used to do the same, usb dongle > 3m USB extention lead > computer.

@JourneymanGeek must be the newer ones
@tombull89 ah i used that

9:43 AM
yeah
these are decent. the old singtel modems cannot make it

yeah

starhub is no wifi, but the motorolas never die.

i'm not a fan of singtel's broadband and miotv
give me the red light everytime

lol
we have both ;p
we had just mio, then singtel threw in free ADSL

wa

9:45 AM
and we've had starhub for donkey years... and its a package with the TV

miotv is unreliable
starhub is goooood
miotv constantly suffers from teh purple screen of death
(for me)
while on my grandfathers starhub tv the software on it is screwed

ooh
you on starhub now?

erm
not really
starhub is on my neighbours' wifi

good enough

while my router is locked by my parents in the drawer
:(

9:47 AM
can you reach www.vexxarr.com

whats that

webcomic

Yes.

i haven't been able to get to it via starhub for the past few months

can't load

9:48 AM
lol
see, THATS the problem with starhub

but most likely because the signal is one bar

they have wierd shit like that

if my wifi stick didnt drop down i would have 3 bars now

no. it just won't work ;p

lol

9:49 AM
it pings fine too

oh
i think my neighbour is using the internet right now
lag spike

Hey @WilliamHilsum, looks like you're not the only one.

Q: When I use the "Upload..." button, the last picture is sent again

badp's sockpuppetToday, while educating my users on the wonders of the flag as spam button, I noticed that using the 'Upload' button causes the last picture I've uploaded to be submitted again. Case in point: I uploaded this picture. I then clicked "upload" again to put up the next picture, and while I picked th...

@bckbck: i think i built every system, and more or less handled the home network since i was 13 ;p
so that was never a problem

wow... Thanks!

@JourneymanGeek i basically handle every tech device at home
since i was about 9

9:56 AM
in my case. especially the router ;p

ah the router
2wire routers are pretty much un-hackable in terms of customizing it

well, my other router is a DD-WRT
more specifically a WRT54GL

i dont think dd-wrt is installable on the 2wire
according to my research
which dissapoints me

yeah
singtel's modems also have special firmware i think
yanno, for the IPTV stuff

yea
my parents still don't understand how miotv works

10:02 AM
lol
magic!
witchcraft!

i keep on telling them that it works by teh internetz
thru the modem

a modem locked down to connect to a single ip...

but they still think that its like cable tv

(or a standard modem with QOS to their servers... and as much bandwith as required for it)
i want fiber, but its not cost effective

starhub had a great offer during the pc show

10:03 AM
(granted, i also want to upgrade my network to gig-e. most of my computers support it..._
if i can swap either of my connections to fiber at the same cost... then yes
else its a hard sell

never trust ISP speeds
the speeds are great for singapore-based servers

international speed? much much lesser

yeah, i noticed
my 'server' is at the office. its much faster over singtel than starhub

my aunt is planning a home network system
and blindly followed a random salesperson's advice of buying expensive WAPs, $300+ each

10:06 AM
well, the 'hard' part is if you want a wired network
its worth it, but...
geeze. r

yeah
if internet speeds are fast or same-network transfer

afk foodage ._.

@WilliamHilsum Can you get Vista Business OEM licences for a good price?

@paradroid Vista - Nope... Need to get Windows 7 professional and downgrade to vista business

@WilliamHilsum Well, the whole point of getting them is for a cheap way to upgrade to Win7 Enterprise

10:13 AM
@paradroid I highly doubt you will find them cheap anywhere... OEM dies with the machine, so, no one will sell second hand - and - distributors just get their money back/change to Windows 7, so, they are never sold cheap
...perhaps though, I can help you and get your MS SA licence (or whatever you are choosing) cheaper?... Windows 7 Enterprise/all the licensing options, I never really understood why you need to have a OEM license - it feels like you are paying twice...
but... happy to help where I can

Microsoft Action Pack. I have used 4 of the 10 Win7 Enterprise upgrade licences, and the Ultimate, but I need a couple more now, so I need two Windows Vista Business to upgrade from.

Ahh... well, can't help :( sorry
when did they change it from full to upgrade licenses?

It would have been so much easier and cheaper if they were all Ultimate. They are exactly the same apart from licencing.

... Since I became a MS partner, I no longer have an action pack... sort of miss the binder and nice info you used to get!

You have to be a partner to get it
I get media free anyway. It's quite a bit cheaper.

10:23 AM
back
@WilliamHilsum: well, if you're a DIY builder its still cheaper than retail

I never knew Quora also does the ExpertSexchange hide crap. http://i.imgur.com/9cTnO.png

@JourneymanGeek ? IF you mean I never understood OEM, I mean, I don't understand why you need one to purchase SA/licensing... doesn't matter...
@Sathya Never knew Quora even came up on google :/ Mind you, haven't head of them much recently... wonder if their bubble has burst

@WilliamHilsum that's a good point, never seen any of their articles indexed

@Sathya I come across them time to time, normally when searching for something quite arcane

10:32 AM
@paradroid so far, IIRC I've come across Quora only via direct links

@Sathya I checked my Google history see that I got there after a couple of Google Chrome queries, RemoteApp Aero Glass, and searching for "Why do people like watching sports?", lol

@paradroid LOL
still not getting the spelling right, @paradroid :p

No, I blame my typing angle. I really need to clear my desk.

lol
@paradroid: that's why i raise my laptops.

10:48 AM
There's a few European language Vista Business OEM packs selling on eBay for £50 each, from what looks like a reputable seller.
I know a guy who buys OEM licences quite a lot, so I'll ask him what he thinks when he appears online
Or I can just revoke the Ent licence I put on my dad's laptop. Hmmn.

wait...
if its just to upgrade, can't you just use a 'trial' install, not activate it, and just upgrade over that?

@paradroid ... you do know Action Pack is for internal company use only? :/...

@WilliamHilsum Yeah, of course. But I do a lot of work with my dad and it is my thinkpad anyway

but anyway... I don't understand why anyone would sell OEM at under cost, or old versions... unless an end user overstocked, as I said, suppliers get their money back and always get the latest version because it is free to them and end users can downgrade if they want... so, it makes no sense to stock old stuff
ok... just being friendly about it, don't want to see you get in to any trouble!

@JourneymanGeek I doubt that is possible, and I don't want to risk MS partner account getting disqualified

11:37 AM
good day... i hit the rep cap

show off

lol
well, i HAVE been quiet the last few weeks.

@TomWijsman any specific reason for that? :P

The European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC or Euratom) is an international organisation which is legally distinct from the European Union (EU), but has the same membership, and is governed by the EU's institutions. It was established on 25 March 1957 along with the European Economic Community (EEC) by the Treaty of Rome, being taken over by the executive institutions of the EEC in 1967. Although other communities were merged in 1993 and 2009, the nuclear program has maintained a legally distinct nature from the European Union. Q: Does a rack mounted computer need back rails, or can front rails (steel/alu) handle the weight?

KanonskallI'm trying to put together a DIY computer rack; the thing is, I've never seen one in real life. Hmm yeah wouldn't have voted on these as well

Even this last one can be answered with advice on how to determine if it can handle it.

Yeah

1:19 PM
It depends on the computer's weight isn't really helpful when you are building a DIY computer rack.

that might be better for SF tho...

I feel that this last question is more off-topic (towards diy.stackexchange.com) than it is not constructive...

@slhck: Vague! :D

@TomWijsman Not constructive? ;D
I'm tempted to answer, "click on the link and save it somewhere"

@slhck: No, not constructive is where subjectivity comes to play a role. This one is just vague as there isn't a real question as there is no problem...
Or at least no problem that we can see, perhaps the "enter in the address bar" helped him. And that's just trivial and not really of an expert level to the wide community.

TedHow download bz2 file with chrome/firefox ? example: http://domain.com/file.sql.bz2 Thank you

loved his old phones, they'd last for a week without charging...

I had to do a project on it too ....It was either mine or Symbian's fault but nothing ever worked :-)

@slotishtype Nokia would probably blame you for not understanding it ;D

2:21 PM
only a week? ;p mine does something like..2-3. granted i hardly USE it

except for playing Snake or something :P
man that was a great game
fires up emacs

And they would be right because it was sh1t....:-)
Snake, now there was a game...

lol. mine has that.
oh, and there was a nice frozen bubble port

@JourneymanGeek Like with the penguins and all or just same game concept? :D
I'm losing all my hope over the bz2 thing
heh, I made a trip to Bratislava earlier today, look what I found

2:43 PM
You are always looking for a penguin shop and then three come along at one....

lol

@slhck How's your ruby project coming along?

@slotishtype Well, like most of my Ruby projects, it was finished in a couple of hours -- didn't have that many requirements ;)

That is the beauty of the thing....

Yeah, I've never had the feeling of wasting time over something
So what I did was writing a gem that converts TV Anytime XML data (which is just ordinary TV programme data) to RDF, linked to a film database

2:54 PM
ah, is there RDF support in Ruby?
Still don't dig semantic technology that much

Me neither, I more or less had to do it
Yes there's a library for it (RDF.rb)

I had to do a project in OWL before, ended up with mysql and a lot of hoodwinking....

Heh... I just love the looks of something like
Statement.new :subject => program, :predicate => RDF.type, :object => @po.Episode

@slhck: exactly the same

@JourneymanGeek And that works on a tiny screen? :o

zm15why did they even make firefox 4, if they coming out with firefox 5 right away? what was the purpose of it? And i've read there won't even be any updates to 4.

@slhck: Well, it's now: +10 +2 -12 = 0 :)

All the trouble for nothing! ;)

If it were still open, I would've posted "What's the **** purpose of Firefox 6? If you can have Firefox 7 already." :P

Good afternoon everyone

Hey there @DanielBeck
@TomWijsman Yeah, and then in a few months, we could open a series of questions like "wtf why is there Firefox 12?"

And then come up with historical question like "Why didn't they stay with Firefox 1?"

4:29 PM
@slhck Is it not possible to accept answers to closed questions?

@DanielBeck: It reads "before".

@DanielBeck I was under the impression it was not, but I could be wrong

Oh...
It indeed got closed afterwards, weird...

@slhck JUst asking because you seemed to emphasize the "shortly before closed" bit

@DanielBeck Not intentionally :)
@TomWijsman Oh, okay, learned something again

4:31 PM
@TomWijsman Pah Firefox 1. Phoenix 0.3 was an outstanding release, don't see why they had to continue working on it.

Well, @slhck, @DanielBeck, just checking...

Q: Should people be able to accept answers after the question has been closed?

TomWij As you can see on the timeline of this question, an answer has been accepted after the question has been closed. This results in reputation for accepting the answer to both the questioner and answerer, for a question that isn't welcome to the community in it's current form... Should people be ...

@TomWijsman Well for what it's worth I don't have as much of a problem with the person answering getting rep, if the answer is useful and provides references (like in that example).

5:21 PM
@slhck Haven't seen this one yet, thanks for the link

@DanielBeck I could actually watch TED talks all day long

A: Multiple instances of PowerPoint (2007)

KCotreauActually click on the PPT files, don't just click the shortcut to open Office 2007 in the start menu. I just did this and attached a screen shot of my task bar. You can see the two instances to the right. I do not have dual monitors to show the whole application open. As a note, in Office 2010, ...

@slhck Did you send him a private message of sorts about the edit? I think he's asking about a notification/message that he got which wasn't an actual comment on the answer

@DarthAndroid Heck, I don't even know how that would work :P
> Any help is appreciated as I need to fix it by tomorrow or I lose my job.
hmm
what kind of employer is that

7:27 PM
@slhck KCotreau just got your edit summary in their inbox AFAIK

@slhck that's the kind of employer that expects you to figure out your own computer problems, especially when you're an IT intern

@slhck Or the kind of employer that expects you to not mess around on a production server.

@ThiagoM @DarthAndroid heh :D actually, thinking about that it makes sense
I was only lucky to have a really really nice employer back when I did some sysadmin stuff
@DMA57361 Is that possible? I mean I don't recall having a post of mine edited or at least getting a notification about it

@slhck tbh, I'm not really sure, but he'd quoted your edit summary so that's all it could have been, so it was easiest just to point them at that and have that be the end of the comment trail :)

@DMA57361 Yeah I saw you take care of that. Thanks ;)

7:45 PM
@DMA57361: I took your question up to a higher level.

Q: Can we please have better tag wiki excerpts?

TomWijThere are a lot of tag wiki excerpts that are in the style of: Questions about/specific to <tag-name>, <description of object>. or even Tag for questions about/specific to <tag-name>, <description of object>. Do we really need these trivial elements in front of...

Because looking at the SO tags they have the same problem there, and I can think of the same happening on other websites around the network too...

@TomWijsman f/e, but you caught me off guard there for a second before I realised you'd changed your gravatar!

What's f/e for? :)

"fair enough"

@DMA57361: Kind of reflects my late activity on Personal Productivity, and also a lot of studying... :)

To be honest though I've never given care about the tag wikis whatsoever, only in the case where we disambiguified (<= is that even a word?)

7:48 PM
Where as my previous was for a visit in Brussels and the one before that was captured sufficient time ago.

makes sense

disambiguated is a word, and that's what you meant I think...

Thanks @TomWijsman :)
That avatar has been driving me crazy all day though

But apples are good, they keep doctors away...

No, it's green apples that make my mouth water!

@DMA57361: Me too... :)
Is there any specific reason for the number in your name? I just typed it wrong for the first time, does @DMA work for notifying you?
Oh wait, there's tab complete, but I type too fast for that... :(

lol, yes @DMA works, but tab-complete in chat is handy ;P
and the number is completely 100% meaningless
I literally mashed the number pad one day when I was much younger and needed an online handle for the first time...
