8:00 PM
@slhck too localized?

@DanielBeck: Yeah, I'm currently in three discussion rooms, but apparently nobody wants to discuss with me... :)

Well I wouldn't see how a Pavilion DV6 should by any different from.. a Windows 7 machine
Whoa @DanielBeck you've got 3 flags sitting on that message :D

@DanielBeck the dev's seem to think so... I'm not convinced myself, but the idea is to cut back on noisy comment discussions

I guess if I do this thrice a day, chat.stackexchange.com isn't going to look very well... :-(

Do we have any good questions about how to clean up all the crap that comes preloaded on a new laptop?

8:02 PM
@slhck You mean the message of mine that was just removed after it was censored?

I'll delete that for you @DanielBeck before it gets too many offensive flags... I'm not sure but I've a feeling that leads to a short auto-ban if you get too many

@DarthAndroid: That's a single run through Autoruns for me, other than that there are specific tools for that.

@DanielBeck Yup that one. Had 4 at the end.

@TomWijsman asking with regards to that question that was just linked ;)

what about that one? superuser.com/questions/302/…

8:03 PM
@DMA57361: I've had one of my messages removed, it gets automatically removed at 5 I believe and you don't get an auto-ban for a single message. But I'm not sure either...

@TomWijsman well, it was headed for community removal anyway, but since they don't really to see the context it's just safer to trim it off locally

@DarthAndroid: I know there is a specific tool for that, but can't come up with it's name. My mind says "C*** Cleaner", but that's CCleaner...
Other than that things like Revo Uninstaller or just Add/Remove Software should do the job.

@slhck I'm tempted to create a topic about the expletives in Linux kernel source code. Just need to figure out how to phrase that so it's on topic :-)

@DanielBeck Heh, that and its answers would probably raise the flag count by a fair amount.

@slhck lol, when did penguin become a swear word? :)

8:11 PM
Quick, someone flag the image, it contains bad words!

@DMA57361 Well maybe in combination with one of the other ones? :D

@slhck O_o my word, think of the combinations

I'm actually crying of laughter right now.

I can tell by the pixels of that thumbnail that they are bad words...

@DMA57361 Does a flag count as valid even if you only add a comment?

8:19 PM
@slhck hmmm, chat flags we talking about? or site flags?

site flags, that is

all the flag types can ultimately be valid or invalid
why?

A: Digital Signage - What software to use?

MaheshIts a bit late to be answering this question. All the same I suggest taking a look at http://www.DigitalSignageSigns.com a software that lets users setup Content using Customizable Templates, Images, Video, Web sites and RSS feeds. In addition, it has optional features for displaying Live Weath...

Pretty obvious, but I thought I'd share -- take a look at the templates from the website, pretty hilarious
@DMA57361 If I was flagging that as promotional, and you just added a comment telling them to disclose their affiliation, would that still be valid?

@slhck yes, if I act on a flag in the way the flag implies is needed then I'll mark it valid

@DMA57361 Okay, thanks for explaining :)

8:24 PM
np
some flags get "accepted" automatically - ie, when a post is closed or deleted
the more subtle ones a mod has to accept, but generally if the flag is right it'll be accepted

Who'd guess this is a €0.79 pizza?

8:46 PM
Well, 1 exam down, 1 to do
@slhck What are those big blobs of white? ;s

@SimonSheehan Small balls of mozzarella cheese
So how did your exam go?

@slhck Not bad. The multiple choice part was quite hard, but the essay was easy to do. So i think ill get a good grade on it :D

Congrats :)

:D thanks. I've just got history on monday, then im out for the summer!

Any plans yet?

8:50 PM
Well, i plan to run every day, play tennis every day, drum every day, and as i do every day find news things to do with computers :)
and i'd like to find a job in there somewhere

Oh you play the drums?

I do, i think its a wonderful instrument
I also play the alto saxophone

Wow, sax is great. I play the guitar, drums and keyboard, but I've always wanted to learn something like saxophone!
So do you play in any bands or something?

I just play in the schools concert band, we try hard, but were a small group. Also, playing the alto lets me do fun things like this:

O_o

8:56 PM
Its quite the funny video, me and my friends try to redo it at school sometimes xD

Haha okay that must look... weird?

SAX MAN

A tad, but its all in good fun
Do you play in a band @slhck?

A couple, yeah :D Used to play guitar in an alternative rock band, but not any longer. Currently drums in a thrash metal/hardcore band, keys in a German-pop/rock indie band and guitar in a cover band (we do everything, from oldies to Rammstein)

Very cool actually. I'd like to do something with the drums like that, since right now i just play for myself

8:58 PM
yeah... of all the instruments there are, I think drums ought to be played in a band.
Rehearsing to playalongs is fine, but it's more fun with others

I like to make up my own stuff a lot :)

Oh that's cool :)

Mhmmm, 1 month, 1 day at my new internship to bring down the SCM server :)

@DarthAndroid SCM server?

our mercurial server

9:02 PM
Ah. How'd you manage to do that?

NO clue. We're rebooting it now, but still don't know where the log files are stored.

UH oh

I had issues pushing changes earlier - they appeared to have pushed from my machine, but never showed up on the server
I had pushed to a personal repo on the server earlier, so we tried just pulling from that into the main repo
... that was 4 hours ago

sounds like things went kaboom

it's been retrying every few minutes to pull the changes into the main repo

9:38 PM
@slhck If it gives you the runs after... I can! :P

@WilliamHilsum lol umm why should it?

sorry... terrible joke... I'm having pizza as well for dinner!
... It doesn't matter what brand though, nothing tastes as good as a proper pizza shop... no idea what it is they do to it! ... Some come close though

Yeah, I know. Our favorite one stopped delivering to our district a few weeks ago..
But that one I had was really great, I mean, that's a bargain, for .79! Normally I'd pay up to ten times of that..

9:53 PM
@slhck yeah, you certainly can't beat that price!

My God take a look at this answer

A: Can a local variable's memory be accessed outside its scope?!

Eric Lippert How can it be? Isn't the memory of a local variable inaccessible outside its function? You rent a hotel room. You put a book in the top drawer of the bedside table and go to sleep. You check out the next morning, but "forget" to give back your key. You steal the key! A week later, you retu...

yeah, that one got a little bit of attention

didn't know Joel had such a big audience

?

I think he shared it on Twitter

10:06 PM
wow...

it hit reddit too, at least I recall an MSO post about this A and reddit

well, you know who that bloke is!? You can't get much better on compiler issues!

Q: Mitigating publicity-driven vote inflation

Tomalak Geret'kalFollowing the Reddit debacle™ back in January, we've had another instance today of a question becoming overwhelmingly popular due to external "advertising". As soon as Joel tweeted about Eric Lippert's fantastic answer, the viewcount shot up. The OP received three gold badges for the question, w...

that'd be it

:)

10:07 PM
@WilliamHilsum well true... but 1519 :P

lol
Does SU even have that amount of visitors!?
When in chat, the site feels a lot smaller!

@WilliamHilsum indeed, but if you want numbers check the SE stats page
IIRC we pull ~10% of SO, so not too bad really :D

Ah, fwiw, the question also was on Hacker News
so that'd explain the traffic

Before, Jeff had such a big following, the site simply snowballed... this has become the biggest programming resource outside of MSDN.... where as, there are hundreds of computing forums and sites - I am sure we will get there... possibly bigger one day as it is a bigger market, it will just take its time

I like it the way it is
traffic-wise
Well, I'll call it a day
See you @WilliamHilsum

10:23 PM
@slhck bye!

10:56 PM
if you don't mind my asking, @Wil, why did you change your name?

0
Q: Why are changes applied without any reasoning or community agreement?

Tom WijsmanPlease align the Excel tags ins't agreed upon, while Can we please standardize the Microsoft tags? has been there for ages and has been a consensus which we pretty much agreed up. Why does Random perform changes put forward by someone that is not properly using the tags? Why does Random not let...

Question closes, OK. But I don't really get the point behind these decision(s)...

11:23 PM
@studiohack: It was so that if someone googled for his name, he hoped his answers on SU would show up in the results.

@MarkSzymanski ahhh. makes sense (cc @WilliamHilsum)

@studiohack hehe yeah... @MarkSzymanski Typed that explanation a few times, thought everyone knew!
I am just hoping that Google will pick up on it eventually - I want some of my good answers to come up if someone types my name... Wil is to generic!

@studiohack: Do you have any specific reasoning behind that the standardization of the Microsoft tags has not yet happened?

link to the post?
I'm not around a whole lot @TomWijsman

Just probing, because the moderator team might have discussed something which I'm unaware of and is the reasoning for a delay.

Q: Can we please standardize the Microsoft tags?

nhinkleTags for Microsoft products are currently a mess. Office: office, microsoft-office office-2007, office-2010, office-2010-beta, ms-office-2007, office-2008, microsoft-office-2010, office-2010, office-1997 (wow...), office-2002, ms-office-2003, office-2003 Word: microsoft-word, msword, word ...

Recently the next merge happened without agreement by anyone but a moderator, which is the reasoning of my meta question I gave earlier.

Q: Please align the Excel tags

Lance RobertsWe lost the battle on excel already, so now it's labeled microsoft-excel, but I see there is still confusion with the version specific tags. microsoft-excel-2002 microsoft-excel-2003 excel-2003 microsoft-excel-2007 excel-2007 microsoft-excel-2010 excel-2010 (s) excel-2011 Could a moder...

11:30 PM
the whole post is a mess, I can't tell what has been done and not @TomWijsman

And unrelated, I think we also should look at
0
Q: Should we be getting rid of unversioned tags where there clearly is a version?

Tom WijsmanI don't really see a point in questions being double tagged as brand-product product-version, can we please change these to brand-product-version as this would cover both tags? What do you think?

I don't have time to look at it right now, but I could later...

@studiohack: The post isn't really a mess, it's been outlined what has already been done. All the rest has not been done yet...
@studiohack: There seem to have been gone through the post, but it's still missing consistency.
Office 2003 points correctly to Microsoft Office 2003.
@studiohack: Would be fine if this was looked into and made consistent so that the question is finally handled.
Perhaps we might need another consensus on whether or not to include brand names, but that's up to the moderator team to ask to the community.
I would however not agree if that were applied silently after most of us wanted the brand names.
Other than that, have fun with what you are currently doing. There is no hurry, but I was wondering if I skipped something.
I think it's best that we come to a final consensus (although I feel like the question up-votes already brought us to one) and then just click through the tags listed on the page and when it's done mark it as .
@studiohack: Feel free to migrate from this message to my current message to Ask a SU Mod.
