Q: To Catch a Hacker.

Mark TomlinOS: Windows 7 Enterprise Edition (90 Day Trial Version) I put my computer into a DMZ so that I could host a server for a little while. (Port Forwarding was not working in my version of DD-WRT that I had installed on my router.) After a little while someone made a connection to my computer via Re...

oh dear

he wants to back trace the hacker...oh dear.
Also, why Win 7 90 day trial version?...

quick, close it down!

Q: Which linux distro is great for my old computer?

Can you suggest me some Linux Distros made for old computers? My OLD PC config: Pentium 4 - 2.3 GHz RAM - 512 MB HD - 80 GB :D

:D

@slhck Wow that was quick!

@Linker3000 lol yeah Sathya seems to be there obviously

@slhck I don't think he has a job - just sits in here all day!

@Linker3000 Haha, well I also have a job and sit in here all day, somehow it goes hand in hand.

@slhck Quiet - and get on with your work ;-)

9:33 AM
@Linker3000 No, not today, we have a public holiday :D

@Linker3000 I SEE <s>DEAD</s> LURKIN PPLZ

Oh no, it's the ghost of @Sathya !

@slhck Ah - fair enough - what's the day for?

@Linker3000 Corpus Christi

that's a city in TX :/

9:36 AM
@slhck Bah - we don't get a day off for that - but the local Cathedral lays on a special...arundelcathedral.org/corpuschristi.htm

so close to hitting rep cap on meta.so yesterday :(

@Linker3000 Yeah, I think we have the most public holidays of all countries, so, can't complain. But it has its disadvantages.
But nice pictures on that website :P
@Sathya what for?

Q: Suggested edits Review page shows the user who proposed the edit as Anonymous user

SathyaThe past few hours or so, I've seen a huge spike in proposed suggested edits by Anonymous users correcting the grammar & actually fixing the posts. : Going by past trends, this isn't... right. After approving the edit, taking a look at the permalink of the edit suggestion shows the actual ...

Ah, nice catch
So how do you know you're completely addicted to SU? You get out of bed, put on your glasses, write a 1400 words answer , and then have breakfast and take a shower :P

ooo
the "shared" links for the FAQ actually put the target section at the top of the page

9:48 AM
@DMA57361 That's nice!

indeed :D

@slhck actually.. I don't even put my contact lenses and close few questions. From my phone.
I need help

So, btw. what would I really have to do to get the FAQ extended, or have a separate page for the "Why was my question closed" thing?
Just leave it on meta and wait until somebody wants to implement it?

@slhck start workin'

Jeff Atwood Update: this experiment is now deployed, and can be experienced as the main /faq on all sites. We feel even with the current content (well, there were a handful of mild tweaks) this new format is superior. We are still teasing out the content issues, so you can expect the /faq content to ...

A: Converting bandwidth: Bps-Bytes/s MBit-MB

slhckThere are 8 Bits to a Byte. How mow many data (Megabytes per second) can I transfer on my 100 MBit network? 100 MBit per second, or 12.5 MB per second, theoretically. The real transmission rate is lower. It depends on several factors, such as electromagnetic interferences, transmission prot...

I mean, it's not that complicated, is it?

that's what I was thinking :/

after all, it does sound like homework?

nope, actually

11:04 AM
reminded me of my first course in internet technologies though :P

11:18 AM
@slhck It's always easy when you know the answer!

grr. this is obnoxious. i.imgur.com/0bTui.png
(i do not have any interlok protected plugins.)

@Linker3000 True that, but I mean, if look up what a bit/byte is, the answer is right there :)
@JourneymanGeek I always hate that protection they put on recording software

Damn, reaching the vote limit is annoying.

Recently my Cubase USB stick broke into two pieces and I had to glue it together, because after all, if it's broken I have to buy a new license
@DanielBeck Do you want us to vote on anything? ;)

@slhck: funny thing is, this won't work without their hardware... and this is a ahem borrowed copy since i can't find the DVD
@slhck: this also didn't work with windows 7 or IE 7 until a fairly recent version.

11:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek What kind of error message is that anyway!

love the hardware. its nice and tough, and works well. the software is... meh

ProTools, really?

well, i get it when i start the programmme, i hit no, and its fine

I thought it was the software!

@slhck I need to do all my downvoting myself, wouldn't want to burden you with it ;)

11:23 AM
@slhck: its.. picky. if the hard drive is 'slow' it complains. it won't work with USB HDDs...

@DanielBeck Fair enough :P

on my old laptop, i had to turn off everything (AV and all), and defrag before every recording session

Meh, that sucks.

lol
yeah
the newer ones... do USB audio and ASIO, so i'm not stuck with protools - hell i think they are usable on linux. The mbox 2... had odd ASIO support, and no USB audio support - but were still nice

@Linker3000 Now that I see it, I would at least expect a software developer to know what bits and bytes are
@JourneymanGeek yup, I think it's a good move to not lock hardware/software together that much

11:30 AM
@slhck: i don't see why i need to rename my recovery partition... for a programme that does NOT have to touch it ;)

The sites are more offline than online today *sigh*

@DanielBeck Have you also been getting various errors throughout the day?

@slhck Yes, I think I got the "something went wrong" twice and the maintenance comics once, between 9AM UTC and now.

I think I also got "no data has been sent" as a Chrome error twice

@DanielBeck regd: your question: just a short note: the votes & flags age off

11:34 AM
@slhck Now that you mention it, I got something that looked like timeouts today (but didn't wait for the browser error message)

@slhck Well, that's true - I do get a bit irritated by people who seem to use the site as a lazy way to get someone else to do a Google search for them.

@Sathya "off" as in "feature request denied"?

@slhck: also, nice answer to the codec question - I believe people use AVI/xvid when they want smaller files, with lower resolution - MKV tends to be high def. It might be force of habit, and good compatability with older or crappier devices. its a bit of the mp3 of video codecs/containers ;)

@DanielBeck it may get denied - I can't take a call on that - I am writing a response

@Sathya I don't think flags expire... do they? (except comment/spam/etc I guess)

11:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thank you! Exactly. I'm still so frustrated over device vendors that can't manage to get a h.264 video streaming from one box to the other. But my 1990ies AVI files work. Duh.
@DanielBeck "age" off, not "are" off :)

@DMA57361 afaik they do

Damn. Perfect example of my stellar reading ability. "votes and flags are off". They do age off, I noticed that, but still lead to me contributing to closing questions after a day or so.

@slhck: streaming? no. i think part of the issue is the rockbox chips so many cheap PMPs have. its 'cheap' to decode compared to h.264, so even a crappy processor can handle it.

@slhck I noticed :-/ I didn't order the list items in my post by priority though, you can see which would probably rank highest...

@Sathya hmmmm, really? I thought "normal" flags had to be removed by an action (including the question being closed by the community, etc)...

11:38 AM
@DMA57361 maybe I read about the spam flags then...

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, the other day my TV actually froze and rebooted because of that :/

@DanielBeck Heh, yeah that particular point made me chuckle. (because I can definitely relate to it)

i think both TVs we have are 'dumb'. granted one is a bigass plasma screen... that only does 800x600 ;p

@jdebp fyi you've been getting the Markdown syntax incorrect, you don't need quotes ["Problem with Ctrl-Left/Right bindings in oh-my-zsh"](superuser.com/questions/301029) - it should be [Problem with Ctrl-Left/Right bindings in oh-my-zsh](superuser.com/questions/301029)

I find it weird that he makes assumptions and doesn't verify them. The time spent writing up such a long question could be better spent in research and writing a smaller question with more details...

@TomWijsman I also found the part weird
> In fact, he is typing to me on the compromised computer right

12:42 PM
@TomWijsman Something seems a bit odd about that entire post..

lol since when is that?
I guess the "how do you" triggers it
@SimonSheehan Yeah, it's "odd" to say the least

If anyone is interested in Gmail/Outlook, this was driving my clients mad, and I had problems finding solutions... blog.williamhilsum.com/2011/06/… How to speed up Gmail access in Outlook

ooh fun
Goes to read

@WilliamHilsum or use POP3? :P

IMAP is where its at :)

12:48 PM
@DMA57361 Technically true, and if you have one device... I would also recommend it... but, IMAP is so much better
... get too many duplicates with Pop3 and can't sync sent messages... otherwise, I would of used it

@WilliamHilsum I have my phone IMAP'd (so I get GMail when on the move), and the PC set to POP (with the account set to archive those downloaded, so I can still get them on the phone) - but if you've multiple "full use" devices then you're in trouble
@WilliamHilsum I've never had a single dupe with POP3 & GMail that I'm aware of :/

Really? before I did IMAP on my server (not Gmail), my brother and my devices used to get problems all the time as if you delete in one, it doesn't always delete in the other..
and mark read/unread obviously never worked... I suppose, if you work on a 0 inbox basis it doesn't matter, but, I don't delete and it was a nightmare!

yeah, but as said I'm only using POP on one device (my PC), tis probably a big factor

yeah... agree... but, if you are using Gmail... with my guide, you can now use IMAP :P... if what you do already works, ignore my blog!

I will :D this way I have to do exactly nothing and stuff that's made it to my PC is auto cleared from the phone (well, not really, but I don't see it unless I go hunting) for maximum lazy

12:55 PM
I had HUGE problems using hotmail and POP
now i've got gmail and IMAP...and its wonderful

I couldn't help myself, put XKCD in an answer!

A: Encrypted HDD 100% safe?

William Hilsum If you have all ASCII characters, quite frankly, it is possible still - but highly unlikely.

heh

:D
the funny thing though is, it is a 100% true

don't forget to mention keys being in memory and all that jazz

@DMA57361 hehe, and @SimonSheehan When technology works, it is good!

12:57 PM
@WilliamHilsum and when it doesn't...bad things happen ;)
that answer gave me a laugh though
so whats everyone up to on this fine day?

@SimonSheehan I have just updated the topology diagram for one of our sites and cancelled a transfer between two systems as it brought down all our VPNs!! Apart from that...

@Linker3000 No big deal eh? ;)

1:13 PM
@SimonSheehan The fun was getting back on to the remote site to stop the transfer because the normal route is via one of the VPNs so I had to do the following: VPN from desktop PC to Linux server at home
Use RDP to connect to a PC at home
Install OpenVPN and PuTTY on PC

Scratches head a little bit

Create VPN from home PC to site

@SimonSheehan Well I just made myself some nice coffee :P

Run putty to stop transfer

Sounds like you have quite the job going there @Linker3000

1:14 PM

ooh, now thats some fancy coffee

@SimonSheehan A self-created little bit of hell.

@Linker3000 I have to say, I don't envy you for that

I wouldnt mind some hell right now, studying for english is horribly boring

@SimonSheehan Exams coming up?

1:18 PM
@slhck It was an interesting diversion and saved a 10 minute drive to site.

@slhck Yep, got one tomorrow. Going in today for a bit to review with the teacher, i've got to prepare points and arguments for 5 essay topics

@Linker3000 Fair enough :) I just can't deal with systems not working and me being responsible for fixing it!

But only 3 will actually be options on the exam

@SimonSheehan Oh, so it's a rather important one I guess?

@slhck Well it sorta decides if i can go into university or college english next year, but not overly important. i just want to do well :)
I've got around a 72% in that class
and the parents wouldn't mind me making honour roll again, so im trying :D

1:22 PM
What is 72%, is that good or bad?
System's totally different here

Well, if your mark is below 50%, your failing, because it means you know less than half the courses content
But 70%+ is considered to be "average"
Meaning you know most of the content
whats the system like there @slhck?

Oh, okay so that's your final grades?
Well we have categorial grades from 1 to 5 where 1 is the best and 5 means you've failed

Yeah, its the final grade. Exams can either bring it really far up...or really far down.
English is probably the hardest subject

So let's hope the one tomorrow brings you far up then :)

Yep :)
But so far my studying at home has been, well, less than productive

1:33 PM
@SimonSheehan Procrastination?

@slhck You know it ;).

Heh.
Plan: Doing the taxes, doing some commercial programming
Execution: Playing around with my iPad, posting on meta
:-(

@DanielBeck being self-employed must be really hard (if I assume correctly)

@slhck It'd be a LOT harder. You have to do your own taxes for business, benefits, profits cannot always be stable... theres a lot to it, so you have to applaud those who do do it

@SimonSheehan Yeah, I personally couldn't do it. I'd procrastinate all day long. Without at least one person telling me what to do, I'd end up doing nothing :P

1:37 PM
@slhck It'd be easier if I were a bit more organized with the paperwork ;)
But it's my own fault and this weekend I'll have to pay

@slhck My work right now probably represents that statement very well :P

Figuratively and (almost) literally

Meh.
I mean, sometimes I actually go to my workplace just to get private things done.

@slhck just read your profile after you said that, what exactly do you do as a "research assistant"?

@SimonSheehan Well I am employed in the frame of a project, which again is funded by the EU or the government, or whatever. So, my supervisors (professors) set a goal for that project, and I'm there to do the dirty work :)
And when that project is over I'll have to look for another job
But basically it involves researching, as in: Reading through tons of papers, defining experiments, writing papers, going to conferences, et cetera

1:45 PM
Oh, fun. Sounds interesting at the least
I need to find a job

@SimonSheehan It is, you'll get fully paid holidays all over the world :P
Last year I went to Arizona, next week I'm in Lisbon. Flights, Hotel, all paid for by the project's funds
Are you looking for anything specific @SimonSheehan?

@slhck :D right now im just looking for a part time job to save some money for college/university. and just to have a little cash :)

@SimonSheehan Well you could definitely do some part time IT stuff!

@slhck oh i'd love to do that kind of thing, but theres NOTHING around here. Even the tech stores will not hire people who don't have some experience working on commission. So it looks like ill be stocking shelves in a grocery store or something

Heee! Spyro! :D

1:50 PM
@SimonSheehan That's too bad. I mean, you gotta start working somewhere.. like an internship or something
heya @DarthAndroid

@slhck im 16, theres not much out there for my age, but someday i think i will :). I'd really like to get into video production more than anything

@SimonSheehan That's very interesting as well. I guess you'll be able to find some smaller video production companies where you could start carrying cables and then work your way up :P

@slhck Yep, might have to look around for that. Theres a great course on it at a local college, which sounds fun
be back in a moment, updating firefox
And back
Love the fast updates :D

lol :D

@slhck Local theatre or amateur dramatic groups are often keen to hear from new volunteers

1:56 PM
@Linker3000 aah, you did some part-time sound engineering for that theatre group right?

@slhck That's right - and now they want me to get involved with the lighting!

@Linker3000 So didn't they have someone who did that before?

Does your school/college put on some summer concert? Could to ask to help with that?

My schools 100% closed once monday ends, so nope. I'm going to try helping out during the year, i do need community service hours.

@slhck Yes, but he's driving them nuts for various reasons.

2:03 PM
@Linker3000 oooh, that supports my general feeling towards light engineers (no offense!) :P

hmm, wonder if i should take the laptop to english to make notes..or just write em..

@slhck I think his main forte was to only turn up for the last two rehearsals and give everyone the run-around as they tried to get him up to speed.

@Linker3000 Well it's definitely a bit more complicated in theatre productions
I only know it from concerts, where there's no script for lighting

@slhck I can imagine

Actually taking lots of notes would make sense to type it out.. what am i saying

2:12 PM
@SimonSheehan Well if taking the laptop with you doesn't mean instant procrastination ... :P

@slhck Ah, but no internet at school :P
Plus my teacher will be forcing me to work

@SimonSheehan Then it's okay. Our computer science classes were full of people firing up the torrents on a high-speed connection as soon as the teachers started talking

Haha. @slhck I tried to get stuff from the archlinux repo's once...they kicked me off the internet

heck, they even brought power distributors
because our rooms would only have two outlets

o.o
Wow, thats nuts
Mine is crazy slow anyway
Except its a 30 minute walk there

2:18 PM
@SimonSheehan Well the universities have their own backbone attached to a European research cluster, so there's that :P

Ooh fancy. We've got uh... 3G that isn't really 3G and is shared by about 300 people

oh, that's ... probably insufficient

@slhck My class had 10 people on youtube at once, and the board office called to say the entire board of 20+ schools was lagging. because of us
So it may just be SLIGHTLY insufficient

lol

@SimonSheehan hah, I've been guilty slowing the entire school down as well.

2:22 PM
@tombull89 I'm guilty of crashing the network from it :(
Tried to update my machine there....took out the servers in minutes, they crashed
somehow

duh

Q: I want to spool and print pcl. with waiting for the entire job to spool. Is can this be done.

gkkI have a large pcl file that need to spool and print. Not spool and then print.

don't ... want ... to ... edit

@slhck Its very...detailed

Is can this be done?

This was 5-6 years ago in a media studies class. Our teacher wanted different examples of car adverts so we all hit visit4info (a advert website) and basically nuked the connection.

For God's sake man, think of the children!

2:24 PM
We had to connect through a god-awful java applet that would often never load.

@tombull89 Oh, Java!

Fun stuff right there.

"Is can this be done." ew
I hope he wants to print a dictionary.

Java's awesome. Most that code in it... not so much.

2:25 PM
Well, apparantly the fact that everyone has facebook on their phone now means that 15 people cannot respond to me. Closes that tab

@tombull89 Probably got distracted while writing "Is this possible" and wrote "Can this be done" + some leftovers instead.

I love how people ask questions like "hit and run".
It's even worse on SO
Oh gawd, someone's listening to Rihanna with their windows open

Well ill be back, time for a shave, shower, and a very early lunch

Have fun @SimonSheehan
Nice talking to you

WTF... I got a 4-bay Drobo external hard drive enclosure two years ago. They said it was "expandable to up to 16TB". 16TB divided by 4 HDDs = 4TB/HDD. Their limit is actually 2TB. While all other products have been patched for larger drives, well... We apologize for the delay! The release for 3TB drive support for the Drobo 4-bay units is almost complete however we are continuing to put the release through quality assurance testing.. Damn.

2:36 PM
@DanielBeck "...we are continuing to put the release through quality assurance testing" = "...we can't get it to work yet..."

It's always the same

@Linker3000 True. And that line I didn't quote about drives even larger than 3TB is almost guaranteed to be bullshit.
Although I'm wondering why it takes them this long when they have support for larger drives on all their other products. I didn't expect them to work this different internally.

I've been waiting for QNAP to release a newer version of TwonkyMedia server for months now. The software is absolutely finished and stable, all they would have to do was compile it for ARM and release it.
"We are currently testing the software ... " etc.
Oh, our kitty loves teh cupboardz

2:53 PM
@slhck I have a 2-drive D-Link DNS323 NAS with 2 x 1.5TB drives, but it's linked to a Linux box that actually runs my main media server app (Serviio)

@Linker3000 Sounds like a better idea. It'd be nice to have another box in my network running linux or something

@slhck Cute!

@Linker3000 He is, but he's a bit stupid since he fell from a tree

Long kitty sleeps long and hard
(3 legged since he had a fight with a car)

@Linker3000 Aww, is that a Maine Coon?

3:03 PM
Ragdoll - might be a bit of Maine Coon in him - he's certainly big enough

love the long fur!

@slhck Yeah - he has to be brused every day as it's so fine it gets tangled easily

@JourneymanGeek - because of your cat incident a few days ago:

Hello guys. I installed Skype on SD card and removed SD card. Then tried to access Skype and it told me that it had been removed so i installed another one. Now i realized now that i have 2 Skypes. What should i do?

You installed Skype on an SD card and removed it. Then you were trying to access Skype on your PC?
First of all which Skype did you install?
my god, really

@slhck had to laugh out loud at that one xD. Anyways, 30 minute walk now!

seems grawity will get the second ever reversal badge.

Q: Is there a way to add a custom favicon to an App Tab?

IsziSince the release of Firefox "5", I've come to really love the new "App Tabs" feature. However, I've now realized that several internal websites at work do not have favicons. So, when I make an App Tab out of these sites, there's only a "blank page" icon in the tab. Perhaps I wouldn't mind s...

^Regarding that: The answer provided addresses the initial question. But, I've got an enhancement to that question included in the OP that I still would like to see covered. Should I edit the OP to re-emphasize, or just post a separate question?
Specifically, the answer covers how to change the App Tab favicon for sure. But, if you navigate away from the bookmarked URL, even within the same sub-domain and directory structure, the favicon in the App Tab drops back to the default.

@slhck Both are latest versions.

Hmm, I'd say if the question is answered as it is now, I'd just leave it at that. Open a new question, maybe link to the old one for further reference.

@slhck Which one should i remove?

@slhck Thanks.

@Borisyo Portable ones?

3:51 PM
@slhck I am talking about Android smartphone. Sorry.

@Borisyo Well that's a different case then

@slhck I have 2 Skypes sitting there.

Can't you remove both?

@slhck Why both and not one of them?

@Borisyo Just to be sure -- I'd remove both and then install a fresh version from the market

3:53 PM
Will do.

Haven't really seen that behavior yet though

@slhck I should keep big apps on SD then?

You should, if they are movable, yes. But If the program is running and you remove the SD, that's not such a good idea I suppose.

Hmmm i only see Skype on internal memory now, but when i access SD i see com.skype.raider-1.asec - 9.16MB

You mean when you go to Settings - Applications, there's only one Skype left?
and have you removed them both and installed again before?

3:59 PM
@slhck Done.
