@ManishEarth calling @ManishEarth

I think I have mastered the MathJax thingy
it took me a while
have a look at my answer here physics.stackexchange.com/questions/78264/…
I think I made Newton's 2nd and 3rd law look very pretty
I like questions like that - not immediately obvious and easier to explain
@ManishEarth how is your studies going?

3 hours later…
11:01 AM
@UV-D Pretty good. I currently am sick though so it's torture to sit in class
Well, it seems to be reported in Nature
Hmm

1 hour later…
12:35 PM
@ManishEarth do you have a cold ?

Anonymous
@ManishEarth Well, you can understand the "sensibility" of that from the following quote:

Anonymous
> In order to make sure HUT holds absolutely, we operate over non-temporal, unitless and quantities with derived units only.

Anonymous
Also:

Anonymous
> geophysics is largely due to the magnification of mass resonance; etc. HUT can be extended to multiverse (10^17) and string scales (10^-67) too, providing a constraint to String Theory. HUT is the unifying theory as it demotes classical forces to states of stringdom. The String Theory's paradigm on vibrational rather than particlegenic reality has thus been confirmed.

hmmm I would be interested to see peer-reviewed papers on this - sounds awesome

Anonymous
12:50 PM
@UV-D No it doesn;'t.

sounds awesome to me... I am always interested in new ides
@ManishEarth - I got my 4th paper accepted for publication!

Anonymous
@UV-D Except that it is meaningless. See the quwotes I quoted.

I'd still like to see a peer-review article
then I like to check up on as many related articles as time allows
I am starting to quite enjoy Physics.SE

Q: Does the homework tag now apply to any question without much research?

Chris WhiteIt seems there are the beginnings of an edit war going on with how can counting the number of cracks in glass tell you about the speed of imact?. Now the question has a few problems: It doesn't stand particularly well on its own, requiring reading an external link for background. It doesn't di...

2:26 PM
@DImension10AbhimanyuPS: Your revision here...
Is that really a homework? O_O
I don't think so..

Anonymous
2:41 PM
@CrazyBuddy It is. I'll write an answer to the meta post soon.

Does not look like a homework question
@CrazyBuddy it looks to me, like a person read an article, got curious about the main idea and decided to ask for clarification

Of course... (So do I) ;-)

if those questions become disallowed...

A: Does the homework tag now apply to any question without much research?

DImension10 Abhimanyu PSI added the homework tag in to that question because it appears to classify so under the homework policy. The phrasing of the question (v1/v2/v3) heavily indicates that it arose from a context like this: Mr OP sees/thinks/hears about glass crack. Mr OP sees a lot of cracks in the gl...

I disagree with this

Anonymous
@UV-D Well, it's easy to disagree without justification . . . : (

give me a chance to type out what I wanted to say, @DImension10AbhimanyuPS
@tpg2114 thank you - I took your advice in my answer

@UV-D No problem -- it's okay if you don't agree, it's possible I'm not correct too since that's the kind of question that could have multiple "correct" answers based on definitions and viewpoints
One could also define mass based on the amount of energy in the bolt if it were stopped

this is true also, - nah, your point was solid - you should answer with your 2nd point here

3:13 PM
I wouldn't know enough about it to post anything about light energy converting to mass, that's way outside my area

lightning is out of my area also...
my branch of atmospheric physics is broadly UV radiation and monitoring system instrumentation
(I am also a geophysicist and seismologist)
(and a physics teacher)
(and a good cook)

3:26 PM
So, a general question - if we find something that tickles our curiousity and want to ask about it, we get tagged as 'homework'?
@tpg2114 is it always this dramatic around here? or is this the Monday matinee?

@UV-D Par for the course when some people start talking
You'll catch on
Sometimes it's easier/better not to engage

oh goody
I think that is good advice
the 'smile and nod' doctrine usually works well
hi @ManishEarth

It appears to have resolved itself:

Yeah... saw that :)

smiles and nods
@tpg2114 all done, now let's talk about physics of something

3:42 PM
Or LaTeX if anybody is a wizard at that... fighting it right now

Anonymous
@tpg2114 I realised I can't go against the (obviously wrong) will of the community.

@DImension10AbhimanyuPS You'd win a lot more arguments if you didn't have an attitude that you are far superior to others and that when people disagree they must be flat out incorrect
6

obvious in your eyes, @DImension10AbhimanyuPS, the community simply disagrees with you - does not make them wrong (nor correct)

Present your argument, let others present theirs and then let people discuss it. Demeaning other's arguments doesn't help your own.
2

@tpg2114 How do you talk like that? (can't stop myself from starring) :P
3

3:47 PM
I'm just being honest. All this hostility creates a very unwelcoming, and frustrating environment. It's not conducive to growing the community, any community, nor is it conducive to the scientific approach we try to take here
4

very true

@tpg2114 very true words, and on another site I belong to, it got out of hand, and in a space of 4 days 3 2K+ members had enough d left, now the site is recovering, but far quieter

Particularly on meta, the conversations should be structured like a debate, not an argument. Present your case, defend your case using facts and appropriate language, and win or lose, be gracious in your language. We're not out to knock each other down, prove each other wrong, it's all about finding common ground and moving ahead.

There's a huge difference between "You're obviously wrong" and "I disagree." Even if neither is backed up with any evidence at all, they are two wholly different approaches that communicate the same thing. The latter being much more appropriate to a structured, civil debate; the former to domestic disputes and schoolyard fights.
\end{lecture}

good lecture

@tpg2114 Umm... when did it start? Did I miss something? :D

3:54 PM
I often forget my opening environment tags. Could be why LaTeX is kicking my butt right now

Hah..!!! ;-)

Hi :P

@ManishEarth Should we remove my comment in here that started all this? It's probably on the border of appropriate for civility we try to keep in here...
But it needed to be said.

@2physics HI!!!

Back in physics world, if anybody has any suggestions on why a 3D simulation of a detonation would have lower heat release than a 2D simulation, but still generate the same wave speed, pressure, temperature etc., I'd like to hear it
Or why said 3D simulation transitions from a shock to detonation faster than the 2D one despite the lower heat release...

4:00 PM
UV-D :D
what an interesting Question...

I have a question - is there anything wrong with my answer here physics.stackexchange.com/questions/78264/…
just got downvoted, not sure what is wrong

Could be because whoever it was didn't feel your answer included an intuitive explaination
It has the math, but not the intuition

@tpg2114: If we consider a direction for heat propagation in a detonation

It's planar if that helps

easy fix, just got rid of it

4:05 PM
Improving it might have been the better route to go
Don't fear downvotes. Think of them as invitations to improve your work.

would not know how to

Tie the math back to intuition. Show that m_apple/m_earth << 1 so a_earth/a_apple << 1
Or come up with another example that illustrates the point of forces acting equal and opposite. Bowling balls and pins make good examples there
The pin goes flying, the ball is barely deflected yet the force between them are equal and opposite

@tpg2114: ??

Which part is confusing?

are you talking to me or to UV? excuse me I don't know your names my friends :)

4:11 PM
You -- the ?? comment

:D
sorry
but you were talkin about UV question.. my English is lame

Yeah, multiple conversations at once

yup, I got confused ..
got? true?

Yeah, you said that correctly

Anonymous
@tpg2114 Well, you could give evidence for that.

4:18 PM
Consider it friendly advice
Unsubstantiated except through my own years of experience debating

@tpg2114 sorry to butt in again, physics.stackexchange.com/questions/78264/… is that better?

@UV-D It is

I had to include an elephant in an analogy....
elephant jokes are the best
here is an elephant joke for you as a reward for helping me @tpg2114
Q. What happens when you cross an elephant with Darth Vader?
A. You get an elevader (elevator)

Very nice... haha

lol
why did the elephant cross the road?
cause it stepped on the zombie
why id the zombie cross the road?
cause it ate the chicken

4:26 PM
alright, thanks

well, it is 2:30am tomorrow here... time for sleep - catch you all later and thanks for all the entertainment

UV
how could we make an elephant livid
:D

how?

paint it :D

lol

4:34 PM
good night

good night - have a great day/night/evening/timewarp

5:13 PM
@tpg2114 I meant evidence for me having considered myself "superior". :

Anonymous
...

Anonymous
@tpg2114 I didn't. I know, though, that not having any valid argument, and not even staying on - to0pic, is an indication that the "argument" is gibberish.

@UV-D btw, `\ll` (those are lowercase L's) and `\gg` work in mathjax, so you don't need `<<` and `>>`
/* back to work; chat can now return to its previous discussion that I don't have time to read atm */

5:31 PM
@ChrisWhite: Nowadays, you're very hard to reach...
Have you dumped us??? O_O

5:53 PM
"Define analytically the terms that should stationary flow accomplish." What kind of sentence is that??

6:47 PM
@aufkag It is a rotten sentence, but it probably means to associate the name of each condition with a mathematical expression. For example "irrotational" goes with \nabla \cross v = 0.
