What's with all the website SSL questions today? That's this Friday's theme?

Titty Tuesdays and SSL Fridays?

And why is nobody upvoting my 2 page TL;DR answers, you lazy bastards?!? :))

@Adnan will alter that later

The title says it all: youtube.com/watch?v=Of2HU3LGdbo

Ur right

4:06 PM
@Simon hehe nice. I'll have two cups with a cherry on top, please!

@TildalWave Two cups, one cherry?
@lynks Think I first saw that on an Infosec Reactions GIF. Only on the Internet.

@Iszi no no damnit I let this one slip unwittingly ... two cherries, one per cup, I don't want some mutant ice creams dafuq? :)

@Iszi the first bump at 15 seconds or so made me laugh so much. Something about the way the cat is so chilled about it.

and thats the weekend.

@AviD how is 2007 treating you?

4:14 PM
@lynks Haha, big time.

ice breaker is still the best flash game of all time.
followed closely by shopping-cart hero

looooooooooool

@Simon TGIS - thank god it's SSL?

@AJHenderson That works too.

I have a beer and a paprika chicken fajita waiting for me at home. two.more.hours.

4:29 PM
@ManishEarth You're such a science nerd.

@Simon ? O_0
What sparked that?

I saw your reply on physics.SE

@ton.yeung Doubt it
Also, fixed
@Simon ah lol
@ton.yeung Ha! :P
@ton.yeung oh, nvm
I just realized that it wasn't working for me due to university proxy blocking
I apparently fixed that (uploaded to stack.imgur)

@ManishEarth Nerd.

@Simon not my answer

4:36 PM
@ManishEarth It still reminded me your answer.

@ManishEarth Nerd.
Come on, reply something. You're no fun.

@Simon Yeah, doing a lot of things at once :P

@Simon he means both hands are busy right now.

Eww

4:50 PM
@AviD QWOP cosplays are fun youtube.com/watch?v=Z1TM90jWXKM

Does anyone know what this is: 66.193.171.227 - - [08/Jul/2013:15:41:39 -0400] "GET /user/soapCaller.bs HTTP/1.1" 404 471 "-" "Morfeus Fucking Scanner" ?
Some crawler or what?

Wow. Who the hell scanned my server at home?
I'm gonna hunt him down.

@Simon open a port, get a scan. cest la vie.

Really?

5:02 PM
@Simon all services on all our machines get scanned at least a dozen times a day.

@lynks +1

80, 22 and 9981 is forwarded to my server

@Simon There's nothing you can do about it. Just make sure you have good configs and latest updates.

people throw dictionaries at ftp and ssh, people run web vuln scanners on anything that vaguely resembles a webserver.

So it shouldn't find much.

5:03 PM
It's very rare to get a server that doesn't get brute-forced or port-scanned

Even if it doesn't have a domain name?

@Simon Yup
They scrap network IP addresses and go through all of the hosts that are up

So, what's the procedure? They scan IPs and then scan ports on the responding IPs?
Wow.

@Simon Most of the time just malware trying to infect you (testing exploits, trying default passwords, etc.)
Make you become part of a botnet, for example

@Adnan And then use your server in a botnet?
Oh god.
That's scary.

5:07 PM
You'd be surprised by the number of unmaintained Internet-facing hosts out there

Let's say my server is behind a router. If 3 ports are forwarded to the server, do I need firewall rules on my server anyway?

@Simon Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist Whitelist whitelist whitelist

@Adnan Yeah... I'm kind of lazy but I guess I'll do that tonight.
I'm gonna have to go through all my damn services and blablabla.

Most importantly is to only allow connections form whitelisted IP addresses

@Adnan To SSH or even :80?

5:10 PM
@Simon Do you need 80? If it's a web host, no whitelist. If it's a you host, whitelist

@Simon Who connects to those?
Only you and your friends?

@Adnan Yeah.
@ManishEarth Web hosting.

@Simon Then get their IP addresses and add them to the whitelist

@Adnan What if it's dynamic?

Here's what I'm doing on my Linux box at home
I only use it to tunnel (SSH) from work and people's WiFi networks. Because I'm not sure from where I'm gonna tunnel, I added the whole Finnish IP ranges to my whitelist
(in addition to some IP addresses for international friends)
That way I'm mostly only open to risk from IP addresses inside Finland

5:13 PM
@Adnan Yeah that's it, I might use it somewhere else. Adding a range is definitely clever.

Which means I can easily ask ISPs to disconnect the offenders
If they don't, I can sue them

Hehe

@Simon No, it's actually what I do. I think it's the best course of action here
If I get attacked from Russia or China, I cannot do anything

You can always cry.
I'll probably end up adding Canada IP ranges.

@Simon I never thought that home IP addresses change that often

5:24 PM
@Adnan Do they? I never had a dynamic IP.

I've been with my current ISP for about 3 years, for the whole time I've only had 2 different IP addresses.
and it's supposed to be dynamic

Haha, talk about dynamism!

another solution I have seen is to run a dyndns client on your laptop, and have your remote service to a reverse dns lookup. So wherever you take your laptop, regardless of the ip, the dns record always points to you.
sshguard will whitelist hostnames for you.

Yeah well, once guard I know this will end up fucking me up. What if I only have my phone on me?
You need a lot of mobility when you wanna launch DDoS attacks.

@AJHenderson Mm....Cilantro Chicken with Hot&Sour soup

5:31 PM
aaaaand rep-capped

Nobody ever laugh at my botnet jokes here, I hate all of you.

@Adnan edited
I didn't read it correctly

Jul 8 at 16:05, by Scott Pack
@Adnan You're confusing the notions of people getting the joke and people recognizing it as a joke.

@Adnan That's mean.

@LucasKauffman Great. I wish I could upvote it
Oh come on! You have to ask me "Why?".

5:34 PM
I wish my rep would be capped.

Then I'd tell you "Because I already have"
@Simon Well, isn't it capped already?
I mean you haven't earned any rep today
so you can think as if you got capped at 00:00
:D

I'm trying to quickly write another answer so I can try to rep-cap today as well.
That partition one really worked out well for me.

@Adnan Why?
oooh
I want to rep-cap key so I can be like you cool kids

@Adnan I don't have any water left in my body to produce tears.

@LucasKauffman I think you will. You have two nice answers today

5:36 PM
yearling badge <o/

gz!

I Googled "Happy birthday Belgian"

super, so apparently the left click switch in my MX Revolution just died :(

Hmm.. I'm 500 rep away from Thomas

it's very hard to work on much of anything when you can't reliably left click and clicking and dragging is all but impossible

5:39 PM
@AJHenderson Do you mean FX Revolution ?

and randomly double clicks half the time

(That's a good gun, btw, @Lucas)

Logitech MX Revolution
sadly the newer versions are crap compared to the old one

It's pretty much the only repeating air rifle that I like

and I <3 my auto-switching free-scrolling/click scrolling wheel

5:40 PM
@AJHenderson Typical old people talk

but I'm 29...

@Simon Come here come here..

@Adnan you'll poke your eye out

@Adnan hugs

5:43 PM

@Adnan what gun?
ah FX Revolution

speaking of repeating air guns

@LucasKauffman Yup, very sweet

@Adnan must cost an arm and a leg tho :/

@AJHenderson I'm not a big fan of airsoft guns

5:44 PM
yeah, I can understand that, but it's a freaking VULCAN CANNON

@LucasKauffman ~ 1500

thats alright

@LucasKauffman aaaand it's a freaking repeater. Shooting it was so much fun
But the blowback usually knocks you off target for the next shot

Screw you, I wanna go play paintball now.

alright shower for me

5:47 PM
@LucasKauffman Doucherailgun

@ScottPack your mum.

@LucasKauffman My brother called while I was writing that answer so I got your banner.

@ScottPack I literally read this as "boner".

I am not taking that bait. I'm drawing a line.

aaaaand rep-trained. #2 in the SuperCollider
@Simon Happy now?

5:51 PM
@Adnan Why would I be happy?
WHOA I GOT REP
Yes sir!

@Simon Yup
Laters, everybody.

Bye my angel <3
I'm taking it too far now.

anyone found the specification for heml.is yet?

@Adnan link me to this supercollider

@LucasKauffman Go to the main site. Look at the 'Stack Exchange' icon on the top left hand side of the screen. Click the down arrow. Click the "Should this site..." answer. Scroll down to my name and click the corresponding Up arrow.

6:02 PM
@ScottPack ah done
also upvoted your rsyslog answer

yay!
@LucasKauffman I would have upboated yours but I'm out for a few more hours.

@ScottPack I will upvote one of your answers if you upvote 5 of mines.

@AviD pah - 30s werent that long ago...

@RoryAlsop 5 months 17 days left (not that I'm counting) :)

@RoryMcCune hahaha#

6:08 PM
@RoryAlsop You are making it too easy to make age jokes :(
alright time for some sushi, I'm already late, my gf will kill me

@AviD 1,2,3,4 - Yes, 5,6 - No, 7 - I have always done that, 8 - I have thousands, but I do know what to do with them, 9 - nope, 10 - hate celebs, 11, 12 Nope...got bored
@ton.yeung and you might dribble on the sushi? wut?

What? You're supposed to eat when you're sick...
In most cases, that is.
Oh, sushis. I thought she wouldn't let you eat anything, lulz.

@ton.yeung . Dragon containing freshly shopped avocado, shrimps and tuna, covered on the outside with a crispy crust. Dipped in soyasauce together with a small spec of wasabi.
Not to make you crave for them or anything.
@ton.yeung The mask is because @Rory is actually a demi god. There was a fierce battle a long time ago between bears and Rories. But all is settled now.
@ton.yeung oooh
and why am I still on here
damnit
Im going now!

@ton.yeung whoooaaaaa :d
No, sounded yummy

The torture?

6:19 PM
2 mins ago, by ton.yeung
@LucasKauffman there's something called a snowcone: fried roll with salmon fried shrimp and avacado with crust and crab on outside topped with crayfish in a sweet unagi sauce
@ScottPack lol

@ManishEarth That sounds terrible.

I don't mind seafood even if it's all mixed up
Though ... avacado in seafood ... maybe not that much

I'm not much of a fan of seafood. Or avocado.

@ManishEarth How would you represent this with a formula?
God, I'm being a real bully today.

:P
Ah
The opposite happens with my gf with many types of food
@ton.yeung She picks out stuff
I'm not too picky

6:26 PM
@ScottPack Why don't you like phpMyAdmin?

@Simon I love phpMyAdmin. Keeps me in business.

@ScottPack It's that vulnerable? ^^

There are viruses that spread on servers that have an unconfigured phpmyadmin

Wouldn't that be the case with every unconfigured web admin interfaces?

@Simon Pretty much. Drupal and MediaWiki come to mind
Yeah

6:35 PM
@ton.yeung www.metaltech.me - all will be revealed
I am Doktor Mayhem

@ton.yeung Mayhem=Rory=r[0]

@ManishEarth lol

I kind of was expecting the background to be black.

Btw @RoryAlsop what are you going to be doing in India anyway?

@ManishEarth work stuff - chattin' bout risk and security :-)

6:38 PM
@ton.yeung He is!

@ton.yeung oh, I very much am The Insidious Doktor :-)
@ton.yeung go visit my Music.SE profile :-)

@RoryAlsop Ah, I thought you were touring

@ManishEarth I don't know whether we have sold any albums in India - last time I looked at the stats we hadn't :-)
We tend to sell mostly in the US, Japan and Germany - and the UK obviously

@RoryAlsop ah. No, India pirates stuff
2

@ManishEarth hahahaha - I see
we make most money off the merch and the festival gigs anyway
@ton.yeung you used the 's' word

6:41 PM
I'm gonna say it: I find Doktor Mayhem a bit creepy.

@ton.yeung And it was spake, in doomful tones: "STAR shall beget STAR!"
@Simon imagine what my poor wife thinks...
I am generally considered the creepy one on stage - I think it's the eyes

@RoryAlsop Poor her...
@RoryAlsop Definitely the hair.

@Simon Ah - for the gig tomorrow I have significantly upgraded the hair. Turns out there is a thing called metallic 2-tone cyberlox
So I bought a bunch
They are very Orange and black and fluorescent

@ton.yeung You really want to know what happens?

Oh, and I did get an addition to my back tattoo - a Metaltech logo in an ancient Mayan style ... with fluorescent ink :-)
@ton.yeung If you look up you will already see it happening

6:44 PM
@ton.yeung I'll show you anyway :P
hee hee
K, I'll cut it out now :P
Probably could have for looped that

@Simon The problem with phpMyAdmin is that it is typically used by users who aren't knowledgable enough in systems administration to lock down their systems and it has a poor history of arbitrary command execution vulnerabilities.

@ton.yeung It's like the most useless kick feature I've seen. No auto timeout, just "kick", and the user can come back
You can for loop it, but that's all

@Simon Whenever I have a Linux box brought in for a post-exploit investigation the first thing I look for is webserver followed by phpmyadmin. More than half the time that's the root cause.

@ton.yeung ha!

7:08 PM
@AJHenderson dafuq? what is the use for such miniguns? turrets and distant sandblasting? :)

@tildal >@RoryAlsop - Respectfully, I disagree. While the question is indeed too broad to answer within the scope of our Q&A, all possible answers can in fact be summarized in a single line of code:
`while (Smartass.count > 0) { disregard(Policy[Math.floor(Math.random() * Policy.count)]) }`
hahaha

@RoryAlsop oh that, yes I was in my coding mood :)

@TildalWave made me grin = definitely a win

@RoryAlsop you're at cockneys for some conference?

@TildalWave I wuz darn sarf just for today. Event at my old work first thing, then a meeting, then went round to the Stack Exchange gaff on the Sarf bank, then back home again

7:13 PM
@RoryAlsop you're flying? it's a bit long way home...

@TildalWave It's about the same time for me to get to my old office in London as it is to get to my office in Edinburgh. The flight is 45 minutes-ish

on the other hand... it's a bit long way till Gatwick or Stansted from downtown London also :~

I am already back home and have fed the cat, done my modly duties on Music, Productivity and here
LCY is my favourite London airport
although in a couple of weeks I'll be going to Luton - which is my least favourite
Luckily it is close to a racetrack :-)

@RoryAlsop damn that's even further away than Gatwick :) I've never flown till LCY tho, I imagine it's not international airport?

@TildalWave yup - One of my options for flying to India in a few days is to go from LCY
and there is a regular LCY to NYC flight
(although on the way out if refuels at Shannon)

7:18 PM
@ScottPack I'm gonna make you test my linux box and for free.

@RoryAlsop that's interesting... I'm just checking it on google maps, it has a single runway built on Thames but indeed looks long enough for the biggest birds. Need to check that next time I'm there

@TildalWave it's actually pretty short, and the approach is wonderfully steep, which is why I like it
Especially in the A320 or BAE146, it's a very steep descent followed by heavy braking
@ton.yeung albatross! ALBATROSS!!!!!

@RoryAlsop dunno... using my thumb on google maps, it seems nearly 2km long (I'd say roughly 1 nautical mile). that should be plenty even for 747s and 380s

@ton.yeung Moa!
or Roc!

@RoryAlsop Pterodactyls, damnit! You should remember them! :P

7:24 PM
@ton.yeung just cos I haven't seen one doesn't mean they don't exist

@ton.yeung some theories go that birds are direct descendants of dinosaurs... tho that might be limited to certain movie studios :)
The origin of birds has historically been a contentious topic within evolutionary biology. However, most researchers now believe birds are a group of theropod dinosaurs that evolved during the Mesozoic Era. A close relationship between birds and dinosaurs was first proposed in the nineteenth century after the discovery of the primitive bird Archaeopteryx in Germany. Birds share many unique skeletal features with dinosaurs. Moreover, fossils of more than twenty species of dinosaur have been collected with preserved feathers. There are even very small dinosaurs, such as Microraptor and An...
actually, I was closer than I thought possible :)

@TildalWave I'm pretty sure the use is just being generally awesome. Though some airsoft fields actually use them supposedly

I want a group of large evil robots. And I want to call them Theropods. And they should go around shooting up bad folks :-)

@ton.yeung just wanted to ask that
for @RoryAlsop ^ ;)
didn't find blueprints tho :(

@TildalWave yay - I will call it Theropod, and I will hug him, and squeeze him...

7:37 PM
@ton.yeung can't make out what breed it is ... a shitsu? or it's a pup of a tibetan terrier?
@ton.yeung Nice, one of the rare few small breed dogs that I actually like. Pretty brave little fellas and not too nervous and constantly barking either. Well, at least by my experience.
lol I just realized I spelled the breed all wrong :)) sorry :))

@ton.yeung Oh, you're the guy that I correct the grammar in his comments?

@Simon You want my consulting address?

@ScottPack No, your personal address.

That's easy enough to find.

7:59 PM
@RoryAlsop you still around?

A: Is there a Security/Privacy risk in storing computers' hardware thumbprint?

user28214is there a Security/Privacy risk in storing computers hardware thumbprint i do read many links or blog about that so i don't think so there is large risk behind it.If your computer or laptop have that option then you can use it and i have also that kind of firm so i think i better know about it.

This one needs to be deleted as low quality and unsalvageable... I also removed one spam link (or whatever its purpose was) from it, just to be sure as it was certainly not needed.
I flagged it as LowQ, then later realized I might as well flag it as spam :|

@TildalWave on it :-)

@RoryAlsop Cheers! Not sure why it shows in my profile the flag was disputed tho. If it's just an error due to you using phone then nevermind, but if there's a reason for it, I wouldn't mind knowing it ;)
or it's automatic if it's mod deleted as spam and it wasn't flagged as such?

@TildalWave oh, dunno - I just popped the comment on then deleted...
not sure why it would dispute it
@TildalWave maybe this

@RoryAlsop Could be... it's OK, I just thought I missed something

@TildalWave I'll have to look at order - maybe I need to first accept the flag and then delete...dunno

8:16 PM
@RoryAlsop it's OK... if I ever run for a mod (it's pretty much the only place where such stats matter), I'll just pin it on you :P :))

hahahaha

Or another flag handler said, "That @TildalWave again? What a douchwaffle. reject"

Hey guys, I'm trying to find that rickroll where a guy talks about getting arrested for solicitation when he thought he was going for a PB&J sandwich. Bing is failing me. Anyone got the link handy?

@ScottPack hehe, yes possible ... it's a Friday night and I'm hunting down spam posts on SE, what a douchebag I am! :))

lamer

8:21 PM
@ScottPack meh I never liked Friday nights that much anyway, it's just a matinée for Saturday nights

Except a matinée occurs in the middle of the day where as Friday night, by definition, doesn't.
But, you're right, except for everything they're exactly the same.

@ScottPack hehe you're in a good mood

I'm feeling tired. And I was just thinking about moving. That makes me grumpy.

@ScottPack Moving? As in moving houses?
I mean, whatever it is that makes you grumpy, let's talk more about it. It might not help you, but it will most certainly make me feel better :P

Hang on - need to grab another cider from the fridge. It is still 28 degrees here even with all the windows open - I am melting!

8:31 PM
26 in the room but nice 23 outside, I'm taking the dog out for a walk

Found it. Google FTW! imgur.com/INUws
Drat. No onebox.

@TildalWave Yes. We're moving cities, it's about 88 miles.
@RoryAlsop It looks surprisingly warm today.

@ScottPack bizarrely it is hotter here than it was in London at lunchtime. Although the SE office was way too hot to be wearing a suit in - I was overdressed by a mile for that!

You visited SEI in a suit? N00b.

8:52 PM
@copy L O L

@ScottPack I didn't have anything else to wear
oh - this needs some close votes:
