9:00 PM
But think of the wide open spaces you have.

@Mitch As tchrist mentioned, it might be a 5x10, but that's assuming they use the same size studs. I have no clue what the actual stud size is out there.
@Mitch they're great for losing change in. Which makes things cost even more.
anyway I must be off. My children still refuse to walk themselves home from daycare. sigh

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 but yeah, I've seen lots of good parts getting introduced in the recent years, like the 1x3 tile, or the 2x4 tile, or the round 1x1 tile this year (at last!), or the slope 1x2x1 modified with a 2/3 cutout. And then all the Technic pieces, and the Technic models that are getting more and more sophisticated every year. All the while stupid Bionicle went the way of the dodo. I certainly prefer to live now than in the seventies, LEGO-wise.

The QIQ was "How big is a 2x4?" Klaxon for saying 2" by 4". It's actually smaller than that.
Enjoy.
Term for a person who can read but cannot write: unhandy.

@tchrist but is that the actual dimension of a 2x4 in metric, or the measure of the corresponding structural piece of plywood that one would find in a European lumber yard?

@tchrist bah not that again.
I had to endure that discussion on my 2x4 answer.
The funny thing is, a year later it did turn out to be a 2x6.

9:10 PM
@Mitch Col#3 is Col#2 * 25.4mm/in

@tchrist right.

@RegDwighт Where is that?
I'm surprised I forgot about the cock-up question when I was protecting the strange attractors.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Bye! Is it even safe for them to walk alone?

Skyrocket still #2 on supercollider. We're basking in publicity.
Maybe basking is not the optimal term there.

@JasperLoy It's Canada. You should be asking if other people are safe with -them- walking around.

9:17 PM
It's the moose problem.

user19161
@Mitch Nobody is safe from Just For Laughs.

user19161
Seriously some of the things they do could give people heart attacks.

@Mitch For a 2x4 I don't think either "metric" or "plywood" apply. It's a 2 in by 4 in structural timber when rough cut, and then it's finished to about 1 1/2 in by 3 1/2 in.
@RegDwighт Done.

9:39 PM
Ah, very good.
@tchrist here is that.

Hello.

1
Q: Is it acceptable to omit "I" when it's the subject?

BasicIs it correct English to omit I from the beginning of a sentence when it's clearly implied? For example... How are you? Hope everything's okay? as opposed to How are you? I hope everything's okay?

Somewhat dupish.
1
Q: Is it acceptable to begin a declarative sentence with "Am"?

andyI want to know firstly if it's grammatically correct to start a declarative sentence with "Am". For example: Am excited about the game today. Secondly, if it is grammatically incorrect, then I wanted to ask how much "head room" there is for the above usage. I can't think of an example now, ...

@Cerberus bottom of the evening to you!

Not that again...
I forgot what that was about.

Irish greeting.
Which you thought was made up or at least never used for real.

9:56 PM
Would you say rue is an appropriate past equivalent to dread?

I could see it that way, why not.

user19161
@JonPurdy Nice new pic!

Q: Why do you have a picture of a woman in a bra on the main Youtube page?

Teresa JonesWhy do you have a picture of a woman in a bra on the main Youtube page? She is asking to find a boyfriend for the night. Don't you realize this is sexist and demoralizes women? Shame on you for this bad advertising. It is shabby. Please remove it. Thank you. All the best, Teresa

@RegDwighт That is spectacular.

Yeah I thought I'd save it here before it gets nuked.

@RegDwighт That makes sense.
@JonPurdy Yo!

user19161
@RegDwighт WTF!!!

@JonPurdy How do you mean past equivalent?

10:22 PM
"All the best, Teresa" must become a meme.

You dread what may come: you rue what has happened in the past and/or the result.

user19161
Mother Teresa is a great woman.

@Cerberus The way I see it, you dread a prediction and rue a memory.

But rue is often about your own deeds or lack thereof, isn't it?

Except prediction isn’t quite the word.

10:23 PM
Yeah.
But...

I dunno, “You’ll rue the day you crossed Jon Purdy”.
Seems cromulent.

Yes, it has two somewhat different senses, I'd say.

user19161
Which words mean opposite things?

But "dread" doesn't seem as neutral as it could be.
Rue can express any negative attitude (in that sense), but dread tends more towards fear.
It can be used rhetorically.
Then it is not about actual fear.
So there is some overlap, but also significant divergence.

user19161
@RegDwighт How is it sexist?

10:28 PM
Y u ax I?

10:55 PM
Eh?

Why he aks me.

I just got pung, but I see no sign of it.

Oh that.

Does that mean a mod is yanking my ear?

1 hour ago, by RegDwighт
@tchrist here is that.

10:56 PM
That was an hour ago though.

Then I don't know.

The ping just happened, after I had finished reading your cite.
I've been commuting the last 90 minutes.

Magic, Lediz and Dschentelmann.

I always get these phantom pings. It is so weird.

Anyway, I was going to call it a day. I won't let phantoms get in my way!

10:58 PM
Don’t check out on my account. :)
Anything fun happened today?
9000 NEW USERS???
Moar?

Good day.

Good, eh?

For me it has been.

You’ve passed some exam, or gotten a new job?

14 hours ago, by RegDwighт

And I'm outta here.

11:01 PM
Blue sperm?

@tchrist Done well on two exams.

Well done, then.

@tchrist clickety-click on the linkety-link for infoty-info.

Bye Reg.

Ouvert et haut !

11:01 PM
And I suppose you could say that I've landed myself a job of sorts, too.

What sort of a job?

Tutoring.

Paid?

Yep.

It’s hard to get enough hours, I’d think.
Plus how come you aren’t the tutee? What are you tutoring? Or whom?

11:02 PM
Yeah, it'll only be two or three hours per week, but it's something.

Make sure you get paid at least a lunch per hour.

@tchrist I'm tutoring a girl that I knew back in middle school.

I’ll bet you are. :)

Haha, you're a silly one.

Am.

11:04 PM
She's having problems with Physics and Maths, and I'm quite good at both of those, if I do say so myself.

It’s one of my better qualities.
Is there any hope for her?

@Mahnax Great!

I’ve tried to help people before who just could not ever catch on.

@tchrist I think so.
@Cerberus I agree!

Patience is key.

11:10 PM
And being willing and able to adapt to the student's way of thinking.
I've tutored computer science and mathematics, and it always works out eventually.
But only if it's one-on-one.

Right, as soon as you have a bunch of people, they all learn at different speeds.

Not only at different speeds, but in different ways.
They appreciate different metaphors, grasp different analogies, and prefer different modes of thinking.

Or just not at all.

s/different/something less repetitive/gi

1 while ibid;

11:14 PM
@Cerberus I've never met anyone who couldn't learn at least the rudiments of a topic. The question is only one of desire to learn.
If you think something is interesting, and you care about it, or at least you see the value, then you'll be much more willing to put in the effort than you would otherwise.

I'll just be tutoring one person.

11:26 PM
@JonPurdy Yeah I meant in a group.
I usually like tutoring.

Mm. Teaching is fun.

But it must be something interesting and teachable.

In unrelated news, I carved a pumpkin this weekend.
In observation of a ritual that may or may not mean anything anymore.

Congratulations!

But at least ain't gonna be no candlejacks botherin' me, no sah.
Doesn't really matter why, I guess.

11:39 PM
Candlejacks?

Jack of the Lantern. Folk tale from across the pond.

Is this related to Halloweed?

Yeah.
Kinda.

OK.
Jack of the Lantern sounds vaguely familiar.
But we don't have Halloween. Is it soon?

The 31st of October.
Thirty-one'st.

11:40 PM
Ah the thirty-one'st.
Your photo looks...happy!

I thirty-one, he thirty-oneth, thou thirty-onest.

I think I'm thirty-oner than you.

It's a kind of happy.
Not the kind of happy I think I want, though. May change it.

Drug-induced?
I like it.
@Robusto Season 3 has begun! Last month, in fact.

Needs more bright crinkly eyes and less gaping maw of :D.

11:43 PM
I like it all right.
A bit like a cartoon character.

I am at that.

nods
Better than going through life as a grumpy old-young man.
I wish subtitles were automatically turned on for downstairs and turned off for upstairs in Downton Abbey.
