Was there a maintenance problem?

Yes.
They're moving some servers around.

user19161
11:25 PM
@Mahnax I was merely stating my opinion that it is not hard to believe that he is speaking the truth. Nobody said you cannot believe what you like.

user19161
@Carlo_R. Not Oichi. It is Yoichi Oishi!

user19161
@ChairOTP What about it?

@WillHunting First picture I see in which all of them are together.

user19161
@ChairOTP Who is all of them?

Some of the most relevant people in history.

user19161
11:36 PM
So @chair is OTP supposed to stand for anything?

I think we talked about this before.

The International Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry, located in Brussels, were founded by the Belgian industrialist Ernest Solvay in 1912, following the historic invitation-only 1911 Conseil Solvay, considered a turning point in world physics. The Institutes coordinate conferences, workshops, seminars, and colloquia. Following the initial success of 1911, the Solvay Conferences (Conseils Solvay) have been devoted to outstanding preeminent open problems in both physics and chemistry. The usual schedule is every three years, but there have been larger gaps. Notable Solvay Confe...

user19161
@ЯegDwight Ah, Reg knows everything!

Well even if you have never seen a picture of Curie, Bohr, Planck or Heisenberg, certainly you must recognize Einstein.

Now I have to recreate my answer for Stony. The server swap ate it. And it was very long. Of course.

11:39 PM
@ЯegDwight thanks.

Oh, and that's Schrödinger right there. Didn't recognize him without the cat.

Hm, I wonder whether I would get a different answer out of Elsevier as out of PubMed Open Access.
Probably not.
But I think I’ll look anyway.

user19161
@tchrist Ah, perhaps it is best to type in a text file for long answers next time!

@WillHunting Well, yes.
Plus I can’t really type in these stupid text widgets that don’t speak vi.
In exploring PMCOA, I found a very very interesting thing.

user19161
Anyway, most of my answers are quite short, so does not affect me!

11:41 PM
The ratio of data in the plural versus in the singular, although overwhelming plural, varies according to when the paper was submitted. This matches the pattern in other corpora.
What’s with all the bluebells today?

user19161
Bluebells?

I really don’t fell like generating a graph by time.
All these fair ladies in blue.
belles, if you would.

user19161
Maybe they are dark?

It takes a long time to parse PMCOA, even longer to parse Elsevier.
And by parse, I do not mean anything close to full syntactic analysis.
Just determiners and auxiliaries.

There are the usual two ladies in blue.
Two men in blue.

11:44 PM
And it is so delightful to have you here.

One undisclosed in blue.

Plus Grace.

Grace is the undisclosed.

Or someone socking her.
I presume Grace is a lady.

You may.

11:45 PM
I have seen feminine pronouns used for her by Those Who Should Know.

But she's undisclosed.

Really?

user19161
@tchrist That is also my assumption. In fact, I have decided to take it so forever.

We feminize her for our convenience.

What does that mean?
I don’t know what I think of your word.

11:45 PM
It means she refuses to confirm or deny her gender.

Really?

You don't have to take my word for it.

She does?

Sep 27 '11 at 18:59, by Grace Note
@Cerberus I have no clue. Honestly, I expected that my blog post would lead to more people wanting to believe I'm a guy, but more often people just want to play around with gender-neutral pronouns or switching pronouns.

I hadn’t realized someone had asked her.

11:46 PM
Many have asked.

user19161
@KitFox I think we had a long chat about this before. I can't remember where in the transcript.

Make her write a blog post in something more Romantic.
It will be impossible for her to hide.

nobody here reads his blog posts anyway, so QED.

user19161
But kitfox is supposed to be male in this chat, no?

I’m sure glad you’re a theyer, Reg.

11:47 PM
@WillHunting Sometimes I am, sometimes not.

Or I would not know what you meant.

user19161
@KitFox Confused!

bows

user19161
Sometimes I think Reg is female...

Whyever would you do that?

11:48 PM
Damn. I've had too many extruded snacks. Now I can't properly taste these honey mustard and onion pretzels.
How sad.

Looks pretty male to me.

Lord Elton?

@WillHunting but he show such good user husbandry skills!

user19161
Simply because "Reg Dwight" is quite feminine.

@tchrist Didn't you know?

11:49 PM
What, the name?

Sir Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

I am always the last to know.

He goes by his given name in here.
To avoid the crazy fans.
That's also why the owl costume.

Gosh.

That's not a costume. He's a close friend.

11:50 PM
Pardon for disturbing this discussion, but only to ask if there is a mantenance problem? @Kit

user19161
I prefer the viscacha costume.

I thought the owl was indicative of his nocturnal proclivities.

user19161
@Carlo_R. You mean on the main site?

@Carlo_R. Pardon?

@Will no here

11:50 PM
Feb 9 '11 at 13:55, by RegDwight
I have actually seen that owl in person.

@Carlo_R. Is something wrong?

Feb 9 '11 at 13:58, by RegDwight
He was so cute, wearing those fluffy pants and all.

user19161
@Carlo_R. I experienced intermittent disruption of chat.

Actually my wife and I visited him again six days ago.

It is a snow owl, is it not?

11:51 PM
@tchrist His intelligence rather. And quiet swooping.

Bubo scandiacus.

Bubo scandiacus

Jinx!

Ayup.

user19161
@ЯegDwight Maybe I am the owl, you never know.

11:51 PM
@kit yes Jasper confirm too

You silly bubo you!

Her mit der Cola!

Not much cola on that one.

Ha.

user19161
@ЯegDwight You had a period more than he.

11:52 PM
@Carlo_R. I am not having any difficulty, but I only just got here.

@WillHunting I am not a woman.

I have a prying personal question.

user19161
@tchrist For me?

Because I think it explains something.

No I shall not go with you to the prom

11:52 PM
giggles

Reg, is one of your native languages Russian?

giggles harder

@Kit oohhh ... Then it is my connection that does not function

This is how they calibrate the polygraph.

@tchrist Why would you ask that every twenty days?

11:53 PM
I am testing a hypothesis.

user19161
@KitFox What is so funny?

@Carlo_R. It could be. Are you having trouble now, still?

Is the other one not slavic?

I'm a vegetarian. I'm against animal testing.
Leave the hippo alone.

The it is my connection that does not function @kit

11:54 PM
My hypothesis is that your second language is not a Slavic language.

user19161
@Carlo_R. But you are chatting now...

Yes @Will

@tchrist you need a hypothesis for that?

@Will and I am happy

I just demanded a coke in idiomatic non-Slavic. No need to write a thesis on that.

11:55 PM
My guess is that it is German, and that that helps explain why you are so remarkably proficient in English. Not that many Germans are as good as you, but that it is easier to imagine than coming from Russian.

@WillHunting I find tchrist questioning Reg about his languages funny.

user19161
@tchrist I think so too.

user19161
@KitFox Oh, I thought something naughty is going on.

No hard feelings, but I have never met a single German who was proficient in English. Or German, for that matter,

@Will but now I am going to see how many downvotes get my last question. CBL

11:56 PM
@tchrist Oh come now. Vitaly is Russian and his English is pretty perfect. Better than most of the native speakers I know.

It is rare, but surely more common than Russians.

user19161
@ЯegDwight Really?

@KitFox yeah. That.
And he's been on it for some 28 months.
I've been posting on Reddit for what, six years now?

@ЯegDwight omg, is that all?

user19161
I have spoken with Russians and Germans and I find them equally good in English.

11:57 PM
Geezis that guy never ceases to impress me.

I wouldn’t know. I don’t frequent the joint.

@KitFox I don't remember the number. I forget things.
I know it was some 2 years give or take.

A number is not a thing.
Plato would not be pleased.

Plato was a troll.

A number is an abstraction.

user19161
11:58 PM
But I must say those that I find hardest to understand are the Vietnamese.

abstractions are things

@tchrist Yeah but my job is abstract interpretation.

Greece didn’t have trolls. It had satyrs.

I was considered gifted with languages in school, but two years to that kind of fluency makes me look like a hack.

@tchrist that was their first prank. Not calling themselves trolls.

11:59 PM
@MattЭллен I thought abstractions were ideas.

ideas are things

Now why the hell don’t I get fadumpchunked anymore?

@MattЭллен Ideas are stuff!
2

@MattЭллен And you are a tool.

@KitFox Two years at Javascript hardly counts. :)

11:59 PM
@MattЭллен And I thought things were tangible.

@ЯegDwight tools are things
