@Szabolcs either is acceptable.

Q: What is the difference between "proven" and "proved"?

vonjd"Proven" and "proved" both seem to mean the same thing. Are there any differences in meaning or usage between them?

except by some linguist.

I don't think that's what that answer is saying. The past is always proved. The past participle may be either.
So we proved versus either of we have proved or we have proven.
@Szabolcs I would suggest using a present perfect for the paper, so one of the latter two choices at the writer’s pleasure.

@sumelic For a good time, try some of the sounds and IPA here or here, amongst many others besides. There's also an interesting Romance set.

@tchrist holy crap. nice link.

Yeah, it's really cool.

@Mitch I thought that IPA Guy was asking about English.

1:52 AM
@tchrist are you referring to the diphthong question?

Aj

Hm...rereading, yes I guess so, he's looking for a word in English with those specific details.

The example with boing and drawing doesn’t work for me at all. They have no vowels in common.
[boɪ̯ŋ] versus [ˈd͡ʒɻʷɔiŋ]. The only phone in common is the final [ŋ].

how about boing and bowing

Oh, those are better.
[boɪ̯ŋ] versus [ˈbowiŋ].

2:06 AM
layer and lair? (not sure there)
the r confounds things
triad and tried? (2nd vowel not exactly right)

[ˈlejəɹ] and [leɹ]
[ˈtʂɻʷäɪ̯jæd] and [ˈtʂɻʷäɪ̯d]
Lots of complex sounds there.
Maybe [ˈtʂɻʷäɪ̯jæə̯d] — I'm not sure what I actually say always.
For me, there’s always a [j] or a [w] between syllables like this. Which if any diphthong you assign that to may owe more to convention than fact.
The second syllable of triad feels like /jæd/ to me.
Because the end of a nominal try is gliding semi-consonantally into the æd at the end.

@tchrist yes.
I've always wanted a regex like search but for phonological features

It might just be /ˈtrajæd/ phonemically.

I suppose one could specify categories like [voiced] = [b,d,g,n,m...]
but then you'd need a word list that has pronunciation.
is there a unix word list with IPA pronunciations? there is the moby word list (or is it CMU?) but those are multi letter, but could be fixed to have single char per phoneme.

2:22 AM
@Mitch Well, I have the OED as SGML, but in general, I don't think so.
If we could only get people to write /traj/ for try, or as Kenyon and Knott, and Lawler do, /tray/, then /ˈtrajæd/ or /ˈtrayæd/ would be much more sensible to folks.

I'm just curious @tchrist are you working on any new books?

Not to my knowledge.

My mother-in-law was in one of those camps. And looks like we're headed in that direction again.

hi all
looking for a user list
any native speakers in here?
I'm a Dutch guy (Dutch native speaker too) looking for a certain word that just won't come to me
It's the (or a) word for setting something up to do a certain thing in a certain situation
like, setting up a race car to blow a tire in the third round of the race
or, in my case, setting up a java class mock to throw an exception when a certain test value is offered
would anyone know the verb that describes an act like that?
pre... something nice...
not preparing, something more specific
not prepending, presetting, prefixing, predefining... I know there's a verb that fits this situation better :/
maybe I
maybe I'm stuck on that "pre" prefix though?

@SadBunny I got nothing.

2:27 PM
aww too bad
thanks anyway

2:38 PM
@SadBunny I would use the word "prepping". prepping
I have a general question for you too, why are you a sadbunny, why not a happybunny?

Can someone please pin that? ^

SmokeDetector now automatically casting spam flags: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/291301/…

Thanks

Was just reading all about that.

BTW, it's our accounts that actually cast the flags. Smokey just automated it
So if flags get declined, it counts as ours

Yes. I considered linking my account for that because this seems like a worthy project, but probably I shouldn't link a mod account.

6:40 PM
@MetaEd Don't worry, there is no automation for sites you're a moderator on
So for instance, Undo, a mod on SO, doesn't get to autoflag on SO

This is perhaps the first good reason I might have for creating a sock puppet.
@M.A.R. So that's a special exception in the code?

@MetaEd There are a lot of mods somehow related to Smokey, and they either manually or automatically are exempt from autoflagging in the site they're a mod on to ensure that there will be always at least a human involved in nuking stuff
Actually, there are more mods involved in this Smokey project than regular users

I saw this sentence: "You can change this view by either clicking on the appropriate button at the top of calendar window" Would it have been weird if the last part was written with additional the like "at the top of the calendar window?"
The sentence is from here: howtogeek.com/237949/…

@SadBunny sounds like you want to rig the system: to fix in advance for a desired result <rig the contest>
@key_asdfg I would say that it is actually better and more normal with the added the.
Probably just an editing error that it got left out or dropped.

@Hellion Is it possible for native speakers to omit that the even when speaking and not correct themselves immediately after that?

Possible? Sure. Likely? I'd say not, but that's purely personal speculation.

@Hellion That's what I was asking, thanks!
