@tchrist I wanted to vote Tom

@JohanLarsson For the Filipino post?

for mod

Oh.

or are you already a mod?

The blue is usually a sign of that. :)

7:21 PM
yes
so that is how you solved your avatar issue :)

I'm an appointed mod on the new Portuguese language site, because I was nominated to the position by the community.
@JohanLarsson Yep, I changed my color. :)
I am interested in the ELL election, though.
I would like there to be a lot of voters.
Elections with few voters sometimes do not turn out well.

i did not recognize any of them

Oh, I do. But you are not really an active ELU or ELL member, so this is not so surprising.

yes
no point in me voting

I see what you mean. Well, the short story is that there are some very strong candidates on that ballot. But even apart from that, the ELL community has a fair core of vibrant and determined members with a lot of energy.
I’m continually scared about getting in trouble for like always upvoting Sven’s posts instead of ever downvoting them. But what can I do? He does such a good job.
I don't seek them out or anything naughty like that. I just come across them normally, and go wow.

A: What dialect or accent is Woishington?

Sven YargsAccording to a map based on the Atlas of North American English, central Illinois is unevenly apportioned into areas dominated by two major American dialects: Inland North, which accounts for the northern third of the state plus a long finger of territory called the St. Louis Corridor that extend...

Don't go through those and upvote them, of course.

8:00 PM
I don't vote much on elu

8:19 PM
I don't upvote much on EL&U

Has the World Cup hype started in the UK?

@MattE.Эллен heh

[ SmokeDetector ] Few unique characters in answer, repeating characters in answer: when to use younger than and younger to? by dddd on english.stackexchange.com

@Rigor Not that I've noticed.

crl
serious question: has every thing a reason?
has a 'thing' itself a reason?

8:26 PM
serious answer: no

crl
What's your counterexample?

Define reason.

@MattE.Эллен :)

Sturgeon’s Law predicts that 90% of ELU postings are crap.

indeed :D and we like to obey the law

8:29 PM
@Rigor a cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event.

The bikeshedding questions are the ones where I’m apt to lose the most rep.
@crl That’s awfully complicated.
I really wish people wouldn’t give one-liner answers that anybody could look up.
I mean, is that really an answer?

@crl that sir is circular :)

crl
a reason is a reason
this is circular ^

Everything happens for a reason and there's a reason for everything
So is this^
:P

crl
I rather see it as the same expression turned differently

8:37 PM
So your original question can only have a circular answer.

crl
you are misologist

For some questions, yes.
I attribute it to one too many trips down the rabbit hole :-)

What's the IPA of Mos Eisley, assuming it's pronounced [Moss Eyes Lee]? scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/102000/…

@Mazura Let's make the question "What's the IPA of Mos Eisley as pronounced in this video?" More canonical that way! :-)

@randal'thor I'd prefer the scene where a trooper says it: "Its markings match those of a ship that blasted its way out of Mos Eisley." I was unable to find an isolated sound bite for that one.
